I appreciate the video man. Im new at differential repair. I have been trying to fix my rear differential on my Chevy avalanche for some time I can't even remember how many times I tore into it. I replaced the pinion and ring gear with a same gear ratio parts. But I keep getting this whine noise and I have the pinion tourged down to 20 lbs. No backlash I don't think I use the marking compound but I do recall having marks in the race bearings. Like I said I'm still new at this type of mechanical work. No one actually showed me I listened to what a few people have said, then I just jumped right into it. So I appreciate your video. Knowledge goes a long way. And now I'm sure I know what I need to do

I know this is old. Basically if you hear the noise when in drive and moving but not hitting the gas. Then don’t when in neutral. It is pinion bearing. If you can hear it even when in neutral then carrier bearings or even wheel bearings could be it.

Having similar issues with my 04 suburban with a whine noise when accelerating. Im hoping it's simply the axle bearings and not pinion or diff bearings. I dont have a hyd press or air hammer so I will check play in pinion and backlash on gear mesh at the very least in hopes nothing is too out of wack.

Impressive conciderg the tight working space and sloped drive. Love the press and impact gun. I've got play in my front DS coming out of the diff. No sign of leaks or knuckle wear. Can spin the shaft in gear about a 1/4" back and forth. What's the culprit ? Not sure this is called backlash or not. I'm looking at new/used 3.08 axels on LKQonline because I dont have the tools to gut it and rebuild. However if it's a simple rebuild without the need for a press I can do it.

Nice work. Wow impressive. I have an 09 Suburban and I have a wierd noise coming from the rear end. Not sure if it is a bearing or the ring and pinion gear mesh wearing out. You hear it when slowing down for a stop sign or corner. Kind of has a howl with almost a clicking sound, that the volume goes up and down as your slowing down. Who knows. Mecchanic says he feels the mesh is good anymore. Wierd wear.

Sorry for this critique,, but I always look here to find how too videos when I am in doubt or not sure,, just to end up putting time in videos in hopes for the info I want or need to just not get it in the end! So, this video just killed me,,,, Well, I was looking for a video to help me see if the noise I had was definitely pinion noise, after I replaced the grenaded g80 carrier and was left with yet another issue. I suspect its the pinion, but to see it somewhere woulda made me feel better. Plus, ripping it apart and re-installation I could use some help on to get it right. Sorry if not making sense, but I been watching these how to videos with no real how too and I am frustrated.. Just like the type videos you see where a guy has a problem on something during a rebuild, then, he cuts the camera and comes back totally not explaining how he overcame that issue! BUT that's the issue I had and needed to see how you done it!!! UGH! I am sure everyone seen those videos. So,,This video woulda been cool, but you left out so much! You started talking through the beginning, but while working your video became one like those where people do and say nothing at all leaving the dynamics and explanation of what you are doing totally out of it! Like, why did you go from one crush sleeve to the other? I woulda liked to know. There was nothing on what kind of noise,, whiiirr,, howl, thump thump thump,, etc?? And the reinstall,, ugh! No explanation of what was to be done! No dial indicator shown to explain your picking of shims,, depth gauge, crush sleeve,, didn't explain the drag and what the allowable limits are that you should have seen on your torque wrench,, was that foot or inch pounds?? No explanation for someone who needs to do this! If this was just a video on what made the noise,, you coulda cut out the break down and limited reinstall and just shown the race and said,, well this is what made the noise and cut tape there! Sorry, if this is a burn comment,, but, it left out all the important stuff if you were going to video the reinstall like that. Thank you!

I was thinking the same thing? Would it be cheaper for a whole rear end swop from junk yard or have a shop do a rebuild?

I just go find the best rearend strip the carrier assembly that has the best spider gears. buy new pinion and axle bearings and seals. Put your ring gear on new assembly and use the shims you had on the old carrier since you are reusing ring and pinion... but of course if the ring and pinion are messed up your left buying new ones and having to check shims and backlash. Depending on your knowledge of rear diffs at that point you might want to replace the whole rear end but I still find it easier to rebuild it myself

Great video...I have a question, took my 99 express to have dripping pinion seal replaced, now 60 miles or so around town driving I have a whirling sound from rearend. I believe they over tightened pinion nut. Your thoughts please.

    • @MrRoy-rb1je

It may have been under tightened as was the case in my 99 Suburban. I gave it one quarter turn more and whirling sound went away.

@@MrRoy-rb1je definitely over tightened. Took to differential shop, front bearing almost seized. Replaced all bearings, crush sleeve, and proper factory set up specs.. $900.00.

Actually, I pulled the carrier three or four times at least to shim it. This is a great way to bore the shit out of people, and they stop watching the video. I do my best to keep the retention time up on these videos and have to cut the boring as much as possible. It's funny, people that know how to do this, are the ones that watch these the most..... not sure why.
