Gray Tsunami: More seniors filling homeless shelters

  • A resident at the Everett Gospel Mission, Tammy Flocchini is part of the region’s growing homeless population, specifically a segment that is growing: the elderly. In this case, shelter managers say, the group is anyone age 51 and older.
According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, in 2008 seniors made up 22 percent of the national population. In 2016, that number jumped to 28 percent, and as the Baby Boomer population gets older, those numbers are only expected to grow.

Except she hadn't planned for retirement...she was just beginning to, in her 50's which is far too late. The reality is that her and her husband spent every dime they ever earned rather than provide for their future and this is the end result.

Unfortunately it's only going to get worse, because they are raising the Social Security retirement age and as it is cost of living and inflation makes surviving on a fixed income extremely difficult not to mention medical expenses.

    • @tomj528
      @tomj528 4 роки тому +1

@@michealtull9033 The only age change they're contemplating is increasing the early claiming age which is a bad decision anyway. As for inflation, I battle that back on a daily basis, grabbing it by the throat and choking it out while I stare it dead in the eyes. Always paying extra for good insurance helps iron out "surprises" and saves in the long run. Besides, saving and investing from the start of your working career gives you options such as retiring as early as age 50...everything after that is just numbers on a calendar.

@@tomj528 the move from early retirement from 62 on the low end to 68 is a big jump. Many people will never live to draw Social Security, and that is probably the goal in raising it . If everything goes great with the economy 401ks might be ace in the hole but then in 2008 a lot of people I worked with got wiped out . Most people are not in the professions or tech industry there wages are not adequate to keep up with expenses. If Trump is reelected in 2020 things might turn around but until then people will continue to wind up on the streets. As far as medical matters I look to Trump to straighten that out to .Anyway lam glad you are doing so well just remember not everyone's life runs as well for instance Cancer I am assuming hasn't visited you yet . Please try to be a little less inclined to blame the victim. These people aren't a bunch welfare cases that didn't work all their lives.

      @tomj528 4 роки тому

@@michealtull9033 Proposed changes are to move the early claiming age from 62 to 65 (a much better age as you then qualify for Medicare). The full retirement age will remain at age 67. We all went through the same recession, and recovery. Any near retiree that was 100% in stocks was foolish indeed but simply by riding out the market correction would be in great shape as we are. You talk of wages not keeping up with expenses, the reality is that those folks are over spending and it doesn't matter what income level they're at, that's the simple truth. Unlike most, I know from doing. I never look to politicians for anything but President Trump has been absolutely killing it, especially with his TCJA. I think he's wise enough to not mess with our medical system as capitalism yields the best results. Anytime government gets involved it just messes it up. We haven't been touched by something so transient as cancer, instead far more serious, long term and more expensive ailments that upended our lives multiple times. If/when cancer comes calling we'll handle it as we've always done, armed with good insurance, a hard won and huge emergency fund and our long term investments. Lastly, these people aren't victims. They worked and spent every dime they ever earned rather than save and invest for their future and are now living the future they planned. At least if they were honest about it they could help others by serving as a warning and encourage them not to make the same mistakes.

Our financial security is made up of 25 years of good choices and hard won savings with another 20 years to go and we'll keep at it. At our income level, there's no information or articles written about saving for retirement or how to plan taxes, I've had to figure it all our on my own and have discovered new truths that almost no one is aware of. But if you think it's kinder to NOT show that anyone CAN save and invest for a secure retirement and in fact they have incredible incentives to do so including building millions completely tax free, then you do you. The lady Rose said of her daughter, "She didn't really wanna change school districts and I didn't want her to have to change." Sooo, even though she knew she couldn't afford it, she went ahead and moved into her car in order to remain in that school district, thus CHOOSING to become homeless?! If she is 61, where is that daughter now? Couldn't she help her mother? In the Filipino community with which I am familiar, both in the Philippines and in North America, it is considered expected for the kids to get jobs at the earliest possible legal ages if needed, and to contribute money, often their entire paychecks, if necessary, to their parents to help the household survive. So in a household of six let's say, there will be four kids working from their mid teenage years and placing that hard-earned money into their parents' hands to help make ends meet. This use to be the case even here, a century ago. Kids were expected to take care of their parents when they got older. And were raised to feel it was a disgrace and shameful if they abandoned their own parents, feeling that after all, they had raised them and owed them "everything." I realize not all homeless have children to help them, but many do! If that societal thinking towards one's parents was still around, we'd have fewer homeless elderly.

I had to sell my home and I took my equity of $21,000 and bought a single wide mobile home. I paid $13,000 for it. I had a friend who did the plumbing and electrical for me and all I had to do was buy the materials. I knew that I could not live off of $21,000 very long if I kept my home. Yes, i worked and was raising my granddaughter who was/is high functioning autistic. I was very, very blessed. I lived in my sweet mobile home for eight and a half years. That was a smart move. You owned your living space outright, and you didn’t have to worry about some landlord kicking you out or the bank foreclosing on your home. I don’t know if you already had property or if you had to rent a small piece of land to house your trailer, but even if you had to rent the land it’s still cheaper than renting a house or apartment.
A friend of mine did something similar - after a divorce, he bought an RV and he lives there. He does have to rent space to park his RV, but it’s a lot cheaper than renting a house. Now that a lot of jobs are remote work, he can drive to another state and live there for a while.

As a landlord and owner of four rentals, I will say that I have observed local and national rents that are completely obscene, adding to the problem of homelessness in everyone. Greed and exploitation of the need for local housing for those with higher incomes, tourists, have squeezed local residents out of affordable housing. Why rent a house at reasonable rates when you can get a whole month's rent in a week by catering to short term needs? Why keep a house affordable when someone with a lot of money will gladly pay much more. Housing is like an auction. It is going to the highest bidder, and it's not the local guy who is working two jobs and supporting three kids. I have kept my rentals dirt cheap ($650/$640 for two houses), ($520/$560 for two small studios includes utilities) because my tenants can't afford a rent increase. This area is near the beach and stores, and rents are double what I charge. The thing is that expensive places can sit empty, as well, for a month or two, since there are lots of overpriced places to rent. Mine don't sit empty, so there is something to say about that for the long term. Greed will kill us. It will.

Upon my return, I also took care of my ailing mom. Three years of homecare, followed by 2 years iin a nursing home. During home care, the universal health care system provided an assistant who came for daily bathing. When she needed an operation, the healthcare system provided free legal assistance to review the hospital bill to ensure that no inappropriate billing had occurred. I was told to not pay any hospital bill until it had been reviewed by health care legal department.
The total bill amounted to 7500 Euros (about $8000 dollar) billed directly to the health care system, and of which we paid 1200 Euros (about $1400).
For the nursing home, the hospital assisted in finding a place in a local nursing home with a excellent reputation. When my mom’s savings had been used up (by providing ba k account info) the government took over, collecting her pension, and filing her taxes. I was not expectied to deplete my own savings as I will need them later on.

I returned to Belgium where I grew up.
Individual health insurance is covered through payroll contributions. We pay higher taxes, but no one needs to fork extra funds to buy a lousy healthcare plan with minimal coverage that is not even guaranteed. If you lose your job, you are still covered. Companies don’t have to be in the business of providing health plans.
People freak out when they hear tax increase. Doing some calculations helps provide some clarity.
Imagine you earn gross income of $25,000 on which you pay 15% taxes (=3,750), that leaves you a net income of 21,250. Imagine you buy a health plan for $600 per month, costing you $7200 per year. Money not in your pocket = $3750 + $7200 = $10950.
Now imagine that your taxes are raised to 25%, the amount is now $6250. Net income is $18750. You don’t need to buy health insurance since you are now covered through a medicare for all type of plan.
By paying $2500 more in taxes you no longer have to buy a $7200 health plan. And now you are covered in case of illness or accident. You change jobs? You are covered. You lose your job? You are covered.
I believe it pays to look at your own situation and run some numbers.
I adding a link to my health insurer website where you can find out how you are covered (if you are interested)
      corporate.devoorzorg-bondmoyson.be/international/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA89zvBRDoARIsAOIePbAeiDs0_4bB28spdHdG6DHgVdR5p6scQNMNvOV8macrElb1khgxfCgaAh5HEALw_wcB

A sad fact is that we have millions of young, capable of working people living in luxury section 8 housing, while elderly people who have actually worked most of their lives end up in a shelter bed. Where is the justice? Have 40 kids you cannot afford and you will get a nice place to live, paid for by the tax payers. Make poor choices as an older American and get nothing.

Sometimes I take my little aluminium boat out on the weekend, cast a line, and crack a cold one with a buddy. I suppose I dont need a whole lot. I never been much into the bar, or partying for that matter. Been out of country(europe, southeast asia, australia), the usa is still the best place to live and work. One thing I'd like to do however is see more states here at home. This last summer I took a week off and went to wyoming for fly fishing and camping, sight seeing.

Rural Texas, New Mexico or Arizona would be excellent choices for inexpensive living in retirement.

the only places immigrants are unable to stand up a presence is where there is no economy. monatana dekotas west kansas west nebrasaka utah west okalahoma western canada alaska.

My mother is the same age as these women. She says she's unable to work, but could readily do any less physically demanding job. She's easily seen a few million pass through her hands during her adult life. Now she's broke, in massive debt, alone (after 3 marriages), and expects my brother and I to host & support her (insisting we're bad children for not letting her smoke in our homes and sneaking cigarettes in our bathrooms like a degenerate teen).
She's caused her own health problems (lung issues, and heart problems through prescription med abuse). Didn't you wonder about the lady AND her husband having cancer? She's caused her own financial problems ($7000 beany baby and $9000 McCoy pottery ebay collecting; no saving; cashing out retirement plans along the way; lavish vacations too numerous to mention).
She insists she's been opressed and victimized by her exes and her 2 children (even though my brother and I have been keeping her from being homeless) and positively GLOWS when some one heaps pitty on her as if she's being showered with compliments.
She lies to get pitty. She told people in our community that my brother(a pharmacist) steals from her, that she paid for his wife's college, that she keeps my children for free while we're out all hours (I won't trust her to keep them any length on account of past issues and smoking), and that the reason she runs out of her meds too quickly is because her children and their spouses steal them....
Yes boomer, there are consequences for living your life in this manner.
Despite having the best economy, healthcare system, education, and massive inheritance from their parents generation, they've managed to squander everything (including their health). They're so angry that they can't get their Social Security early, and refuse to work until max benefits at 70. The rest of us will just have to foot their care and maintenance, knowing such things will never be available for citizens in the future, and suffering the breakdown of family and community their selfishness & negligence have left.

One other thing. Many boomers, at least in my circle, have had to be caregivers to sick or dying parents. Because people are living longer and longer. I’ve had to do it twice. It meant financial hardship because we relied on my income as well. But, it was necessary. Our lousy medical system in this country means people are sent home sick and dying, and can’t take care of themselves, and there is no after care. No relative of mine was going to end up in some dirty depressing nursing home as long as I was breathing!

      His wife wasn't so lucky.
He had over 800 acres, raised live stock, various stocks and bonds, and a two million life insurance policy. He was a veteran and the most knowledgeable, capable, and awesome man. He came from nothing (depression) and raised his children with plenty through hard work.
He gave all 8 children land while living, All but one sold it quickly and only 2 of them used the money for anything good.
All children were left an equal share of everything. Still they squabbled til there was nothing. Then, they managed to dissolve Meme's living will provision, presenting papers my grandmother swore she never signed (only 1 of my uncles didn't participate). They kicked her out of her own home that she'd raised them in, and sold what little was left of the remaining farm. This went on for years.
When they found out she had liquid assets (a member of her church was helping her find a small place in town) they had her declared unable to take care of herself. My Mother and 3 of her sisters and 1 brother provided false testimony. Then these 5 siblings squabbled over who'd be the power of attorney til there was nothing left. They just stuck Meme in the nursing home until she died. None of them would take care of her and she died before I had the means.
All of them but one have ended up this way, claiming their daddy loved money so much he was never home...
My uncle move back after he was married and had his first son. He managed to buy up nearly 200 acres and the old home place.
      He became a farmer.
He and my aunt invite every one each year for Christmas eve lunch. None of his siblings ever come, but some of us cousins do. We'll attend this evening.
Only my uncle and 1 of my aunts even stayed married the first time. I'm certain that NO amount of life insurance would help any of them.....

@@Mexicobeanpole You and a few I've met (like one of my uncles) are the exception rather than the rule.
My mother was born in 58 and she was the middle child. (Please see my comment to the other)
Both my parents are infantile and narcissistic with the impulse control of a teen. Mine and my husband's fathers were absent. We were latch key kids while our mothers dated and were "80s ladies" (song reference). None of our parents and few of their siblings or peers are better.
In hindsight, my husband and I are glad our fathers were not present. Our half siblings suffered much worse than neglect.
My best friend's father bought a house at auction ($15,000), put ten grand of work into it, then had his girlfriend cosign for her (his only child) to buy it from him on an ARM at $80,000 (she was 18).
Another's credit was already ruined at 18 because her mother had used her children's SS# to finance various things, open credit cards, and keep on delinquent utilities.
My husband's best friend has only the big toe on his left foot. His biological mother and father left him alone, in a freezing efficiency, for two days, as a toddler. The neighbor broke in when the crying became continuous. He was soiled, wearing a crawler, and only one sock. The frostbitten toes were not saveable.
Friends, co-workers, and acquaintances all have similar and varied experiences. While I've heard of individuals like yourself who've taken on the care of their parents, I've only personally only met 2. My father's brother's ex-wife took care of her mother to keep from loosing her mother's house (that my ex aunt lives in) to the nursing home. And a coworker who took care of her widowed mom just because she loved her (there was no gain).
You are the exception.... Not the rule. We say 'boomer this and that' because we have good reason.
I'm fairly certain it was public school indoctrination, because I (and my peers) received a heavy dose as well. This is the only way so many people across varied upbringing and economic backgrounds could behave so similarly.
I (like most of my peers) grew out of the selfish, entitled, communist foolishness....
I watched my mother burn through half a million dollars in 3 months with no asset to show. There's NO amount of life insurance that will help any of these people, and their children will be left to clean up.

The Other American Dream. Americans who planned to spend their retirement living in a warmer climate such as FL or NM and enjoy "the good life." They planned for it, retired, relocated to the place they chose only to find out that it has become beyond their means because of losses from the Great Recession or other conditions over which they have no control. Now retirement life is about survival for these people. Sadly, they have to make big changes to their lifestyle which includes luxuries and amenities they value so highly yet are no longer within their reach. They now must be resilient and willing to give up the affluent lifestyle that they had planned for. Reassess their values and realize what is really important to them other than a materialistic lifestyle.

Yes and let this be a lesson to you young people especially millennials that spend every penny they make usually BEFORE its earned (credit cards)
If you don't want to end up in this wave, you better stabilize your finances while you are young. My best advice is to invest in the 401k especially if your employer matches it. Contribute at least the match. You will NOT miss pre taxes 5% of your pay and IT ADDS UP FAST. Leave it alone and NEVER NEVER borrow it. You have to pay it back. Second, save up and BUY YOUR RESIDENCE. All I could afford was a mobile home. So I got 1, 000 together and bought a "we tote the note" in a park. I paid off in 7 years, then between that and getting my credit cleaned up in those 7 years, I traded that in for a NEW mobile home and purchased the land I out it on. I'm almost done paying for my home 20 years later, it will be paid for by the time I retire in 3 years and I will be able to survive my old age with what I put away and social security. I have never earned more than 40 grand a year, and that's only been the past 2 years. Stay out of debt, buy housing you can afford, keep (or get) your credit straightened out, and you'll be just fine. You don't have to be rich. You just have to have a plan, a goal and learn that you can't have everything you want.
