  • High school teacher Kristin Mayer leads students through a lesson focused on the scientific practice of developing and using models. Students observe a Van de Graaff generator that is turned on with pie pans stacked on top. The teacher engages students in a collaborative classroom process of making, discussing, and revising models that explain their observations.

This video is 3 of 8 that introduces science teachers to important strategies based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education (sites.nationala...) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) (www.nextgenscie.... This collection of videos highlights the major shifts in science instruction, explore the new role of the teacher, and demonstrate new instructional strategies in the high school classroom. The project was led by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) (www.nsta.org) with funding from Disney, and the video and lesson development was led by CREATE for STEM Institute (create4stem.msu...) at Michigan State University, in partnership with Concord Consortium (concord.org/), and The School of Education (soe.umich.edu) at the University of Michigan. As a departmentalized school, I am wondering do the students erase all their work so the next hour can use the same whiteboards or does she have enough whiteboards for all individual students?
