- Science and Engineering Practice 2:
Developing and Using Models
Paul Andersen explains the importance of modeling in science and engineering. Models are used by scientists to explain phenomenon. Unlike mental models, conceptual models can be shared by all scientists to improve our understanding of the Universe. Engineers use models study systems and test designs.

Who’s here because of this online school...
me
I'm in an actual class, but yea.
@Kingston Wang Hmm?
Me
I was shown the channel through online classes, but liked the presentation and the ways they explained the examples in this video, so I'd figure I'd just do some independent research with no real purpose. Not sure if that was the question, but I guess so?
Hey CHS Bio Honors class of 2022, that's fucking right, I'm doing timestamps for all of these videos!
1a) 3:25
1b) 3:28
1c) 3:40
1d) 3:57
1e) 4:00
2) 4:46 and 5:06
This one is somewhat uneeded but whatever, and if you start going ahead before the guides are due, I encourage you to also make a timestamp for your fellow students
I'll be back for part 3 some time later though, good luck
Thank you good sir
This is an answer to prayer!!
Thanks for igniting my love for science that I can totally transfer to my eager students this fall!!
The mousetrap car seems like an awesome idea!
Thanks Paul- this series will be quite helpful-
For the A and B square darkness question, the squares are alternating dark and light like a checkerboard. His answer makes no sense, regardless of the shadow cast by the cylinder.
It's simply insane. How could such a bizarre example be used in video about science education theory? Yes, it is obviously a checkerboard pattern, and some of it is in shadow and some is not. Our eyes show us a predictable pattern. I had planned to watch this whole playlist in preparation for the class I will be taking but I'm no longer going to waste my time.
T-T who else has to watch this for school?
this was helpful! thanks!
That reference to Charles Darwin is incorrect. The model shown is actually a model of the neuron as described by Darwin. This is also why it is captioned "I think" by the man.
very helpful thank you
Ants give high fives and kiss , also when going back and forth , fordging.
I’m crying rn 😭
This video confuses representations of models with conceptual models. A conceptual model is a set of ideas that explain a phenomenon, which scientists reach some kind of consensus about, and which can be used to explain other phenomena. Diagrams, physical "models", etc., are all representations of a model, but they are not the model itself. Just asking kids to draw diagrams of a phenomenon is not the same as developing a model. A structural representation of DNA is not a conceptual model. That model includes ideas of how DNA replicates, how it codes for proteins, and how it changes through mutation - the structural representation does not communicate any of those ideas.
I disagree, the structure model of DNA began as a conceptual model and playing around with structural cardboard models of molecules (nucleotides)--and as accidental epiphany hit, it built itself, the conceptual understanding of how this structure may be able to answer questions of how it could replicate, changes etc evolved. Asking kids to draw a diagram where they haven't seen one before takes a whole lot of mental conceptualization--it IS a model--maybe making sense, maybe almost-but-misses-the-mark--but it allows for further toying of ideas-- that model could be further built on, and so on. Some models need models to build (a lego piece is a model of a brick after all)--a model need not be a physical model like a model car is of a car to be called a model--models reflect concepts and ideas, conceptual maps are models of thoughts and connections--they can be a fragment of a puzzle. I think the point is models come in many forms at many levels, some are literal, some are not but are conceptual-DNA structure IS a conceptual model, even though it is plastic, touchable, we can use it to model other phenomena, yet no one has seen it
my mental model is terrible... I chose b

North Pole... one half is LIT
Your a model
The moon appears like a reflection of earth to me
A sexy model.
I don't know what the planet the creators of this are one but the checkerboard illustration and explanation is wrong. Straight up. Bye.
U need some more pep in ur step
