      Idk, I been doing alright with the legacy collection so far, it's waaaay better than the wii u virtual console mmx and mmx2. Talk about input lag, try beating super macho man or sandman with the wii u input lag on punch out, unbeatable, I bought the nes classic, basically paid 60 dollars for one game. I like all the games on it, but punch out is likely the only game I'll ever play.

      I would be keen to know how laggy these systems are in general. SNES is obvious since that was a native game, but is playstation quite laggy for most games? or just for emulated games? - I am particularly interested in lag for Switch, for instance, I am wondering if I should get Sonic Mania on PS4 or switch? - which will offer the lowest lag experience

      it is. but not so much difference, sadly. fact is that input latency kills my hopes for this collection. for now, im just going to play my old x collection on ps2, or play on retroarch (that have awesome input latency configuration) and pray for future patch fixes.

    The saddest thing about this situation is the fact that this Collection is practically the only way us Euro peeps can play legit copies of the games (without paying obscene sums of cash for the original carts/discs), because the PS2 collection never came here, and PS3 store doesnt have any MMX games as classics.
    Not only that, but MMX Legacy Collection didnt receive a physical release, so I already need to import this shit.

    • @GigaBoots

      Thewonderjam that is terrible. I’m so sorry.

    • @khaosklub
      @khaosklub 6 років тому +1

      PSP is region free, can't you somehow manage to go to the US shop? though X6 never had a digital release...
      And MMX1-3 aren't available on wiiU or n3DS?

    • @shotgunmasterQL
      @shotgunmasterQL 6 років тому +1

      Erik Red
      Didnt even think about that. No idea if MMX1-3 are in Nintendo eShop, because I dont own any Nintendo consoles.
      Still, it sounds kind of unoptimal to first purchase an old Sony handheld to play few PS store games emulated (and I think PS3 and possibly PSP also had the issue of pretty high input lag? Classics on PS3 at least are pretty delayed), then buy a Nintendo handheld for like 130€ (thinking of 2DS). The end result is still around 200€ spent in HW and games and a gameplay experience on small screen, just because Europe has been shafted. It would be cheaper and easier to import a US PS2 and then play MMX Collection on that.
      If I had to go that far in playing all of the MMX games, I would just download and emulate them. I dont think that its my duty as the customer to go that far just to give Capcom some money for old games. If illegitimate methods provide a way easier and hassle free experience, its Capcoms loss.
      But thanks for the ideas either way.

  • @megamanx1963
    @megamanx1963 6 років тому +13

    Mega Man X's engine adds 1 additional frame of input latency when performing actions like walking and jumping (not shooting), so comparing it to any other emulation collection isn't quite fair.

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому +7

      Are you saying this comparison isn’t fair? I am comparing X1 across all platforms/versions. I mean, I may be able to get down with the idea that it makes a rough comparison look worse because you’re adding latency to a game with latency built in but certainly doesn’t explain the difference between this and the MMLC, which has nearly 4 frames less of input lag.
      Also, hi, still excited about X++.

    • @megamanx1963
      @megamanx1963 6 років тому +2

      I was saying that comparing to other emulation collections ( like 3:18 ) isn't quite fair since even if they used the same emulation technology,there would still be additional input lag on top (that people would probably complain about, considering it'd add it up).

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому +3

      The comparison was to provide context for what 8 frames feel like. Also, the difference between the lag of the two is so large that the implicit lag of the original MM games can’t be a core component of the input latency they feature.

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому

      If you're interested, we did a new video testing all the generations of X across all releases vs the PS4 X Legacy Collection. X1 does fair the best (as original) and worst (as a port) in the bunch. ua-cam.com/video/F-zTRrolyUg/v-deo.html

  • @mpeterac
    @mpeterac 6 років тому

    Great video. Really interesting to see the raw data. Accounting for significant figures we see that the SNES and SuperNT are really indistinguishable in this measurement since your camera records at 1200 FPS, so the sensitivity is basically just down to the millisecond. Also it is interesting to note that since the refresh rate was ~60Hz, the screens are updating at discrete 1000/60=~16 millisecond intervals. This corresponds with your findings where both SNES and SuperNT had a lag of 3 frames measuring at 16 * 3 = ~48 milliseconds. Since we would not expect to see values in between these intervals they are also effectively the same result.

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому

      Actually, there's a misconception about input lag not necessarily being able to exist inter-frame, that is to say in fractions of 16.666666ms. That's false. When your input is entered is relevant to the game's ability to process it in time for the next frame. When the game checks input relative to frame-time is highly important to the input lag. As late as possible is ideal, and that's why one of the largest innovations in reducing input lag on emulators is to delay running the code for the first 16ms each frame. It's really intense. That will be it's own video though.

    I know it's only been a couple months but I don't suppose there's been any fix from Capcom to address this? Would love to get the Switch version because I could play it portably if I wanted to, but not if the game is going to feel like it's underwater. I thought the first Megaman collection was okay though, so maybe I'd be fine with this?

Playing on an LED TV and a wireless controller will give input lag over a CRT TV and a wired snes controller... does the fact it's emulated even really matter that much?
    my TV is LED but rated highly for it's low input lag (still way worse than CRT's though), and i play on ps4. definitely feel it but playable

    Drives me crazy. I don't know if its the controller or the lag but I can't speed through X X2 and X3 on Legacy collection like I canon an SNES with wired controller or even on an Analogue NT with an 8bitdo. Makes me feel like I'm not as responsive as I know I am.

      Thanks for making this video. It makes me feel somewhat vindicated because I know I play these games on muscle memory. I wasn't sure if it was just lag or the way the PS4 controller feels, I play X games on SNES with the side of my right index finger on the A button to tap dash. I can still get through them ok, it just felt like something was off.

      We use a 21.5ms input lag OLED TV. We subtract the input lag from the results, as I've tested them and confirmed them myself to that exact number.
      Fun thing about OLEDs, if we were filming an LCD the tests would be much harder as their pixels don't change in a fraction of 1ms.

    Can I ask what you used to capture your OSSC footage?

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  5 років тому

      So if you're using an Analogue Super NT all you need as a simple capture card. Native SNES footage is a real bear and there is a capture card that will work with it but it DOESN'T EVEN RECORD AUDIO! This is because there's a jitter in the frequency that the SNES outputs video. People have made a "de-jitter" device for the SNES that makes it not so weird for capture cards to deal with but I can't speak for those, i haven't installed one. www.videogameperfection.com/products/snes-jitter-kit/
      At the end of the day, if you absolutely need a SNES OSSC capture you need to find out how you're going to record audio separately and use a Datapath RGB e1s capture card. www.datapath.co.uk/datapath-products/video-capture-cards/vision-range/visionrgb-e1s
      Every console other than the SNES we use a Magewell pro capture HDMI which is amazing. If you have any more questions of this nature hit me up on my discord or twitter. I'm always willing to help.

  • @JesseMercury
    @JesseMercury 6 років тому

    Love this video and the follow up! Thanks for all the hard work. Have you tested whether the OSSC adds any lag at all? I'm curious if the converted SNES or the Super NT has lower lag when the converter is taken into account. I'm so glad I found this video, this stuff is fascinating to me.

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому +1

      The OSSC doesn't add any lag, it literally doesn't even have a frame buffer. The OSSC digitizes the analog signal as each part of the scanline comes in which is why to get a great image you have to tune it to expect pixels and borders at the exact spot the console will output them and even tell it the phase of the signal (in degrees). I believe the "latency" would be measure in microseconds, so 1/1000 of a millisecond.
      I always play my OSSC in 60Hz mode instead of screen-tearing so it slows the game down very very little. It is absolutely worth it for no screen tearing or frame skipping and insanely low latency.
      Did you watch the second video? It covers more stuff: ua-cam.com/video/F-zTRrolyUg/v-deo.html
      Our third video will be our final one which will cover: Wii U, Xbox One, 3DS, SNES, Super NT, PS2, PS4, Switch, Switch Portable, and more I think.

    • @brolytriplethreat
      @brolytriplethreat 6 років тому +4

      Brandon Williams why 16 or 32-bit? I believe Mega Man 11 has a good art style going for it that maintains the feel without going backwards graphically. Whereas Mega Man 9 and 10 were downgrades in the graphics department.
      That said, I wonder what X9 would be about? Sigma is gone, but I guess the virus still remains, and will until the Elf Wars and such. That said, Capcom is about as likely to make a game about that war as they are to make a game that bridges Classic and X, so a hypothetical X9 and beyond would likely just take place before said war, with a new villain taking the reigns. (An aside, the "New generation Reploids can go Maverick at will" thing was stupid. They can go Maverick at will? Guess what? So can all Reploids by definition of having free will. The idea of Sigma, knowing he is falling apart at the seams creating a group to carry on his will when he is gone was good, but that line was stupid.)

    • @pb879
      @pb879 3 роки тому

      @@brolytriplethreat 9 and 10 were not downgrades. They were supposed to be in an 8 bit format. Unlike these newer games that purposely make everything pixelated; capcom made the games loom as they would on an NES.

    Just like with SFV's 8 frames, I definitely noticed the input lag before I ever read anything online regarding it. Of course, you sort of get used to it and adapt, but I certainly would mind a patch if Capcom could ever be bothered

    Just got the Platinum but yeah, that delay really mattered when executing fast movements and a lot of times my X just stuck and couldn't move. Also I don't know if it is only me but I unlocked the Ultimate Armor on X4 and a lot of times when executing a fast jump when climbing a wall ( X+O at the same time) X automatically performed the Nova Strike and that was a real problem on the entire run! Even so, I needed to pay my respects to Megaman X because I love the franchise and it gave me a lot of fun when I was a child in both SNES and PSX.

    that's why X4 felt off when I was playing it. I was like I don't remember it running this sluggish and stiff

    I'm still using my ps2 collection with s-video input. It seems pretty solid in terms of not adding noticeable input lag.

      judgemario if you have PS2 component cables then the OSSC is a great option. No added lag and it looks crisp AF on new HDTVs. Also, yea, I feel like that collection is always undersold by reviewers.

      We finished testing the PS2 collection and redoing everything on every generation of X game. Check it out if you're interested in how much input lag there is on the PS2 collection. ua-cam.com/video/F-zTRrolyUg/v-deo.html

    ooohhh that's upsetting to hear that input latency is actually getting worse for these Mega man Collections. But as you suggested I will still pick up MMX Legacy Collection, it's for a good cause. I've only ever 'noticed' input latency on some of my friend's TVs.

    I just finished X on the Switch, I knew it felt really off, but I thought it was down to an uneven frame rate rather than input lag. Now I know better! Still, it’s better than nothing when I’m away from my SFC Jr and OSSC!

    No, we SHOULDN'T support it. Capcom needs to know that the quality of this collection is unacceptable. I held off on buying this because of the horrible input lag in the Mega Man Legacy Collection, and I'm very glad I did.

      It's fine that you feel that way and I'm not saying you're wrong. Just know that Capcom will 100% conflate that with a lack of interest in Mega Man X as a franchise. Is that dumb? Yes, it is dumb that they're doing that.

      Input lag is very important. It's literally as important as framerate. If a game ran at 10fps would you regard it as a minute detail? Regardless, it's a blemish on the collection. X1 does happen to be the worst about it on the collection, as shown in our new vid: ua-cam.com/video/F-zTRrolyUg/v-deo.html

      Tanks Mk. 5 beg to differ, there's a noticeable lag between pressing jump and actually jumping in X1. It's laughable.

    I've never experienced input lag from my version of the X: legacy Collections(the Nintendo Switch version). Maybe it's just a thing for the PS4 version(and defiantly the PC version from what I've herd, but that one is just lag overall), I don't know.
    Still going to (try to)get it for every platform I own, which is Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC, but I'll wait for the PC version to (hopefully)get patched.

    • @GigaBoots
      @GigaBoots  6 років тому

      1. Input Lag is definitely also a thing on Switch but there's a cool thing about the Switch people don't know. I'll get into that more on a video we're currently doing work on.
      2. Our next video is going into original X1, X4, X7, and X8 versus the X Legacy Collection all on PS4.
      3. The video after this will compare all versions of the collection.
      If you found this video neat then please stick around. We've done a lot of work to broaden the platforms we can test.
