2001 Ford F150 Cruise Control Not Working and Unwarranted ABS Accuation.

  • This F150 has no cruise control. At first I assumed it was ECM controlled but turns out its a stand alone system and diagnosis via scan tool is useless. The truck also has a weaker left front speed sensor likely due to rust jacking of the sensor which increases the air gap and reduces the signal amplitude.

Very few mechanics are able to read schematics like that. U r a good mechanic.
    Cpl questions
1- how do you bill for a job like that? Hourly? Electrical gremlins can take a long time to finger out.
2- did you ever finger out the abs issue?
Reason I ask is I've got a 99 f150 and the brake pedal is soft, goes to floor. I've blead brakes to make sure no air is in the system. Also the abs kicks in just as you described, the last few ft before I come to a stop.
Just bought the truck and it's the last issue I've gotta fix.
    Thanks.

Thanks for watching. As far as the spongy pedal is concerned if you're sure there's no more air it may be a bypassing master cylinder. Try blocking off each one of the master cylinder outlets to see if you get a firm pedal one at a time. The unwarranted ABS actuation is usually caused by a weak wheel speed sensor signal that drops out before the other side. Try graphing the speed signals and gradually accelerate watching which one registers speed last and drops out first when slowing. The weak signal is usually caused by a rust jacked sensor. Sometimes if you can get the sensor out without breaking it you can clean the rust off the mounting surface. Usually I recommend replacement of the hub bearing assembly. Good luck.

Outstanding troubleshooting and instructions Sir!! Would this be the same steps on a 1997 F150? I'm having the same issues with the CC. But I cannot run the self system check on mine. There's no wire for pin #1 on mine. Replaced clock spring, Checked and replace brake pressure sensor on the master and the inline fuse is good (as well as the fuse in the cabin), and 3rd BL is working. Oddly enough the horn will not stop going off. Has been that way since I've had the truck (about 8 years). But the CC stopped working about a year ago. Thank You Sir for all your time and effort to put this video out. It's a HUGE amount of help and greatly appreciated!!

I'm not sure if a 97 is the same sorry. I'm away from my information right now so I can't look it up

@abitoffcenter383 what have you done to stop the horn from going off. If you removed the horn relay that's likely why the cruise won't turn on. The cruise ON switch sends a voltage from the control side of the horn relay back to the cruise module. I'd figure out what's wrong with the horn first. Maybe the pad switch in the steering wheel. Let me know what you've done with the horn. On And 97 is different

@@PhillipBailey Years ago I pulled the relay for the horn. But once I noticed that shut down the CC I replaced it with a new one. Which didn't help the horn situation, so I unplugged the horns themselves. But the CC worked once I replaced the horn relay. This truck sat for like 8-ish years before I got it. I've done a mountain of work to it!! I replaced the brake pressure switch when I replaced the master and the booster. Back when I was rebuilding the upper part of the engine and replacing the trans and transfer case. But like I mentioned, the CC stopped working about a year ago. Which is when I replaced the clock spring and brake light switch. I have NOT checked the pad switch in the air bag. I've plans to dig into the horn situation this afternoon.
So the steps you took in the video do NOT cross over to a 97 f150?
Again, Thank You Mr. Bailey for all your help and feedback!!

@abitoffcenter383 the systems are similar but wired different. See if you can figure out the horn problem first. Does the horn relay click when plugging it in? If so try disconnecting the horn pad switch.

Have 03 Ford Explorer, similar system with 6 wires. Changed speed sensor, brake switch and steering wheel switch. No luck. Lots of troubleshooting with factory wiring diagrams. No luck. Finally read the owners manual and like you said, activation is a 2 step process. Push on, then set, damn thing worked fine. There never was a problem, it was just operator error. OUCH.

I'm guessing you were pretty happy when you realized you wouldn't have to mess around with the steering column.

For sure but if you followed Fords diagnostic process you would have been into the column to test the circuits.
