Next-Gen AoLithium 12V/100Ah Battery. My honest (and different) review!

  • #AoLithium has send me their 12V, 100Ah LiFePO4 battery and asked for my opinion. Well, here it is then. I have had this battery for over 4 weeks now and have used it in the garage to power an inverter and do all kind of tests with it. It's a great product and I really like using it. It has app access, I can change parameters, can open it up and it delivers (just) enough power to even charge the Tesla! Wow.
    Next to the traditional tests like capacity test and S.P.A.T. test, I have tried to come up with some other test you will only find here on the Off-Grid Garage channel. I really wanted to break out of the usual (and same) battery tests you find online and mix these with a good portion of entertainment and fun!
    The #AoLithium battery is not perfect by any means and there is lots too improve. They are on a good path and really could make the Next Gen battery and I hope over time they will get there, learning from this project and taking all ideas but also critisism from their customers on board.

      Sorry, but a doubled discharge rate adds a lot of benefits and therefore make people buying those with such high rates other vendors do not offer and willing to pay more.
      Here it is called fraud - no chance to get rid off that fraud the prosecutor will let investigate deeply.
      Imagine Porsche would claim their Taycan would be double as fast than the Tesla model S they need to proof it.
      Now it is too late
      It needs to more to get the reputation back and it also ruins the reputation of chinese products especially in the battery segment where we in the west get only not A grade cells except we buy directly from EVE or CALB, all other vendors are selling used cells or not grade A cells they had purchased from auctions in china. Therefore we do not get a batch of 16 cells with following production id's of one batch, no we get cells with production dates from 3 to 6 months, even from last year or 2 years old .
      That is the reality we face, of cause dealer offers with OEM LiFePo4 cells they sell as 105 Ah and say they had been tested with 120 A. Which company has such giveaways of 15% more ?
      These are relabeled cells of brand manufacturers of 120 Ah cells a bit used and they get a 105 Ah label so that the customer will see that the battery tester will exceed the 105 Ah nominal, which could make customers lucky - or let others feel insecure.
      Your cells might deliver the capacity but the charge and discharge rates are key for us how fast we can charge EVs from our batteries.
      Sad but true.

      I'm keen on your battery's, but being In Australia, most lithium battery companies dump B grade cells , are your cells automotive grade ? If I was to buy your brand would the QR CODE , be ligit and is the QR CODE THE SAME ON THE CELLS AS the outer case ?

    Loved every minute of this video. Love your sense of humour and production quality. Excellent and honest review. LiFePO4 batteries are certainly a device where real world experience trumps marketing and your thorough and practical tests are very much appreciated. Love the addition of FLIR photography/video. 4.8 out of 5 frogs from me. The fact that 2 * 2 cells have welded cells in series prevents a manuel, parallel balance is a design fault worthy of mention.

    This was a great review. You highlighted the good and bad on the battery and the company seems to be receptive to your criticism (shown by their comment here). If other companies offer to let you review their products and allow you to give an honest opinion I hope you take them up on the offer.

    011822/0029h PST 🇺🇸/011822/1829h Brisbane 🇦🇺 Good evening Andy. Err the opening of this video made me think as if you were on Safari in Kenya. That was a dramatic overture. Thanks… it brought smiles for a few minutes. The welded posts a big NO NO, indeed. But for me rest of the issues were like what many have observed in normal battery assembly. I, still prefer, assembling the cells by self. 4 of my power systems are my own assembly and proud of it. Though meager, 3.5 years of continuous use has been absolute zero issue.

      Thanks Sree. I also like building my own battery but for mobile applications, this is great. Or like the Bluetti, you can just take 1.5kWh with you and have a built in 1kW inverter. I use it all the time. It's my generator.

    I watched a couple of other reviews and genuinely LIKED the AO Lithium battery. Sweet busbars, nice bolted connections- well designed and laid out. It can probably do more output/charge than listed...Also, good to see you! I've missed the Off Grid Garage, Andy!

      Thanks David. The Aolithium battery is certainly one of the better batteries out there. I'm currently testing two others and they seem to be very average in comparison.

    Just purchased the 300ah aolithium. It has no Bluetooth but claims also 200 amp discharge current. I’d love to see this battery tested. Black Friday deal was $1000 CAD! A great deal for 300ah.

    For me it looks like every time, marketing people create the spec sheets without asking the technicians.
    Let`s see if they follow their promise to improve that product.

    Well done on this video. Being asked to do a review comes with a lot of conditions and pressure, and I think you managed to do that well. I recently did a test/review on a locally made battery, and due to a technicality in the conditions that I agreed to, I was not allowed to disclose the results. I have to agree with your findings too, being "serviceable" is one thing, but it needs to be easily serviceable, and this one does half of that. Next I'll set aside a couple of hours to watch the other videos :)
    Nice to see you using one of those Renogy inverters too, they're pretty amazing for the price.

      Oh, so you are not allowed to say anything about the batteries they want you to test? Aolithium didn't come with any restrictions, they just wanted my honest review. That's why I said yes.
      When working with these batteries, I always think of the batteries you are building with 250A continues discharge current and how far advanced your batteries are. No wonder they sell like hot cakes!

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia yeh it was my mistake by not reading the wording properly. I said that I would discuss any negative results with them prior to mentioning it on my page, and they changed it to being that I would not post any negative results. There was some argument and even threats made towards me, so I posted about my interaction with the business instead, which in the end was much worse than the battery review.
      The "continuous" ratings are tricky. Even mine will get pretty hot when run at 250A, or even 150A. If they were used like that all day every day, it would be a bit of an issue with heat. However the majority of people will only run them at those high currents while cooking, and that's normally for 10-20 minutes. Anyone wanting to run really high current loads should be using more than one battery. I have people putting in up to 4 of these in parallel making about 14kWh of capacity. :)
      I'm already taking orders for builds happening in 6+ months time. And the next 3 months worth of batteries are sold out. It's crazy!

    Regarding the Aolithium battery itself, how do we get them in Australia?
    There doesn't seem to be an importer and when I inquired directly with Aolithium, they quoted a shipping cost of $300 (per battery!)
    Any insight you might have on this would be appreciated!

    The welded terminals are a good idea. Ok that means the cells can't be swapped out but on the other hand they wont come lose inside a sealed plastic battery box. The build quality is nice.

    Hey Andy, nice review! I still like my own cells. Keep up your cool videos! I have a question: Are you going to build a thermal control system for battery 3.0? Liquid or just air.? I know in Australia you dont really need it but it would be really cool! Lg

      I think the easiest way is to use these heating mats under the battery cells if you live in colder climates. You also would need to insulate the battery a bit, I guess. It's a bit tricky as you don't want them to overheat in summer either... I'll think about it...

    Hi Andy, thanks for your vlogs. The aolithium claim that the battery can be put in series and parallel was not tested, it would be nice to see if they have exaggerated this claim? Maybe a future test?

    Excellent Review Andy and thanks again. I would be interested in knowing if you noticed any self-discharging going on with that low #4 cell? I just bought some LFE cells and all but two of 12 cells came out of the box at 3.1V to 3.2V, with one cell was at 1.2v and the other at 1.98V. After top balancing they seemed to deliver full capacity but after a week the same two cells that came out of the box low, had self-discharged to about 3.0v while the rest were at 3.4V

      I have since put another cycle on this battery and could not find any problems except the lack of good balancing through the BMS.

      They will have a hard time with this battery and the initial announcement of 200A discharge current already.

    So obviously the BMS is acting upon all the temperature sensors (there would be more than 1). The software however is only displaying the hottest sensor as that is what is usually the most used.

      Yes, the BMS has got two sensors, one external and one build in measuring the FETs presumably.

    I have found any limited warranty on a battery pack is practically nonexistent if the system is not installed by a licensed, bonded and insured professional installer. This is often actually expressed within the limited warranty wording. As a result, I always proceed as if there is no warranty as I do not have the months required to jump through all the hoops the manufacturer requires. The only way that I could get warranty consideration was to purchase the charger the manufacture preferred and test the resulting charge. It cost me $200 to get a $500 battery replaced. Still I am happy because I now have a working battery and a nice charger. All that aside, I have been denied any warranty assistance many times and have succeeded only once. In many cases the manufacturer did not even ask me to ship the battery back to them which USED to be the first step in any warranty consideration concerning electrical equipment. I think the trend towards ordering online holds much misery going forward in regards to warranty help from a manufacturer.

      I know you can see the other sensors as well. It does not make a difference, they won't go lower than this 26°. The other temperature does not change at all...

    Their company like that. But! With two cells permanently bonded and each cell takes 100 amps that makes two hundred amps. Don't make any sense

    The fact that the case can be easily opened and batteries replaced is EXCELLENT, but the welded pairs is not ideal.
    If the bus bars were slightly larger and the software open source and available for linux that would be brilliant

    Danke Andy für das Video :) The small 12V20Ah would be a perfect solution for the Teslas with dying batteries. I'm having a Winston 12V40Ah with DALY BMS in my Model S since Nov21 and the setup works more than perfect (40Ah is an absolute overkill). So I would give this AOLithium a try ... but shipping to Europe is horrible: $300 ... no thanks. Herzliche Grüsse aus der Schweiz

    replacing components is important if you buy the AO battery for all your usages. If you buy 10 or so batteries, and one has a BMS failure, another has a cell(pair failure), another has a broken case, etc, you can salvage parts to keep things going. I've done this with many other products, cars, air compressors, etc. I buy the same item, same year, to have a "salvage yard". When my parts supply gets low, I scrap and start again with a newer model.

    You might be on to something with the solar panel hooked directly across the battery.
    Improvement of the buss bar is a must.
    If AoLithium made a version with an inbuilt MPPT solar charger with BMS, it would be popular with 4wd people and campers.

      Like the Bluetti. It's an all in one product and connects to any DC power source to charge the battery. It also has a 1kW inverter build in.

    3.4v is a bit low for balancing, but not bad. That would be a 13.6v terminal voltage. I'd prefer to see 13.8v but I can see 13.6v as a "make sure that a float charge voltage will balance."
    I just finished a rebalancing of a drop-in 12v replacement LiFePO4 battery. By deduction (I cannot see individual cell voltages) at least one cell was very low and instead of being able to charge the battery to 14.40 volt and hold, the BMS was shutting me off below 13.7v. It took almost a month of days (I did not want to leave it unattended) to finally get to 14.4 volt pack voltage.

      The balancing function is not good in this BMS (see future video). The good thing is though, you can just change these parameters to whatever you like...

    Great Video. Watched you & Will’s vids. Battery is Impressive. Just don’t know that I can justify that Big of a Price Jump over other (Good) brands, just to have impressive 2C discharge capability.

    Nice work you are doing there. My major concern with the battery pack is that the battery connector is welded and that means one cell can not be replaced which is a down side.

    Hi Andy! Have you ever considered seplos battery or bms for your batteries? They have a communication port which should be compatible with the Victron system. The only flaw is that they are passive. Cheers

    On most thermal cameras, the Emissivities ε is set to 0.95 or 0.90. But for non-coated aluminium, you would have to change it to around ε=0.3 for accurate readings :)

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Well, I did not find the info in the datasheet of those Aluminium case cells. But the presure vent should not be under electrolyte. Thunder Sky Winston batteries should be in upright position (terminals mounted to the top) because of a shorter service life, if mounted sideways. But maybe the Winston cells are a bit different from those aluminium case cells.

    I have the same thermal camera. It sometimes reflects on aluminium and glass. it also wont read through glass. for shiny surfaces put some tape on it to measure the temps if the surface isn't reading right.

    if the BMS have multiple temp sensor, normally xiaoxiang will show the highest temp only, you can tap the temperature display, it will show you all the temp sensor parameter in the BMS.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I have the same BMS that what you using now, you can just tap the temperature icon, then you will see all 3 temp sensor value. (2 sensor on the circuit board, 1 external low temp sensor for battery)

    Is there room inside to add a separate heater and drill/seal the leads from the outside for powering the heater? There are cold climate users that would love to heat the batteries without using the batteries power. It's stressful to be using your battery in the winter, knowing that you will not be able to charge it. Heating from inside the case is easier than heating the outside. The case is a thermal insulator.

      Ah, you mean you drill out the welding at the terminals.... but how do you get the busbar back on? As per my understanding, this welding creates a lot of heat which is fatal for the electrodes and battery.

    JBD does have a good bluetooth adapter. The BMS is also very good. The 100 amp charge rate is a cell limitation, not the BMS. 3.4v is the normal balance voltage, and I think the balance is "up to 150 milliamps", but for good cells it is very adequate and works well. I am not sure "normal use" is 100 amps, most people want the battery to last more than one hour. Perfectly adequate for 80% or 80 amps charge/discharge cycles with occasional 100% use. The BMS is a standard JBD BMS and can easily be replaced, you can even buy it with a heater interface, which allows it to power a heating pad when below freezing before allowing charging. The BMS is rated for 200 amps, as you noted, the cells are not. I have both models of this BMS and it's displaying the FET temperature sensor, not the external.

      If this is a JBD-SP04S034 200A BMS (looks like it), the Xiaoxiang BMS app reports it correctly with three NTC temperature sensors. Two are on cables (or connectors on the side) and one I assume is on the FET.

      This one has only one external temperature sensor. The app shows only rising temperature correctly, not falling. if it shows FET temperature as minimum and external temp as maximum, well that's a bug then.

      If press the top left corner in the app for the menu, there is a menu option called Battery State, it will show the other temperature sensors. At least in my setup. Maybe one there will show the beer probe.

    I finaly got all my EVE batts I now have 1120 ah 24v 28 kwh running 4X daly's bms i never had an issue connencting them to blutooth either.

    That battery looks great EXCEPT......
    I see no padding/vibration resistance.
    I was looking for high quality good value 12v battery(s) for my RV, I think this battery is great for a stationary application like your garage, but for an RV with vibration from travel, probably not ideal.

      It gets clamped down with the metal plate but only has these yellow insulating material, no damping. I guess if you put padding in such a battery you also thermal isolate the cells which could be good in winter but bad in summer.

      In an RV that has room for a bigger lead acid battery, it makes no difference if the padding is inside the battery casing or around the battery.

    Looks like printing dept made a mistake.They seem to be missing technical personal. Most batteries have a long pulse (double current for so many min.)and short pulse (triple current for x seconds)

      They do as well. If you have a look at the specs for these batteries you can see that it can deliver 200A for 3min and 300A for 30s.

    i have yet to find a Chinese app that works right. typical on over rated. i would use it in a car 60 amp chg and 200amp to start (pulse load). but it does look like a very clean build. not just stuffed in a box with some glue to hold it together. good temp for1C 2C not so good. not to bad of a price.

    At least in the US, that wouldn't void the warranty unless you made a change that could be shown to cause the failure, like if you could disable under voltage protection or change it to a very low level and then you overdischarged it.

      Yes the voltage class of the MosFets in the BMS limitting the series connection. When one BMS switches off for some reason the full voltage is over the MosFets of this BMS

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia if you use more of these batteries in series and one BMS switches of (because of overcurrent protection for example) then the MosFets of this BMS have to block the voltage of the complete series connected batteries. And depending on the used MosFets this will be a problem.

    These batteries have problems and I believe it's due to some cells having higher internal resistance (or BMS?). They don't charge to the proper voltage. I have tried multiple high quality chargers and charging always stops on about 13.4v. And that resting voltage diminishes further when the charger is removed. I just received these and have yet to fully test them but thus far it seems like they are selling defective batteries.

      If you drink slowly in sunny hot Queensland Australia, ice is necessary.

      Yes, it does. Internal resistance is usually the lowest between 20-80%SOC. At the extremes, Ri rises a bit. It will be in the next video.
