Rising Zan was the first game that came to mind and happy to see it made it on this list! Fun fact, Charles Martinet (voice actor of Mario) is featured in this game.
I was a teenager when PS1 came out and it was the first console that I realized games are not just for kids. The introduction of the Sony Playstation was the turning point in gaming history.
@@DoCKathos PC was a different story, consoles and PCs were very different beasts and unaffordable to most. Also in 1999 the smash hit movie Cruel Intentions had the line: ""Ronald, email is for geeks and pedophiles." which tells you what the mainstream thought of PC users.
Fear Effect actually looks insane, I can't believe that was on the PS1, it looks so good for the era, and not one but TWO 4-disc games were released for it? Honestly surprised a full remaster or remake never came to fruition for the IP. I'm getting it for sure.
@@mountainmgtow5421 you are correct. I run SH1 through my Retrotink 5x and it looks amazing still to this day. And the music and soundscape...good lord; how can you improve upon it?
Putting Silent Hill and Koudelka back-to-back has me overjoyed! Their both have phenomenal looking backgrounds, and their ost's are amazing. I smiled the second I heard 'Waterfall' play. Fun-fact about Koudelka: It was directed, written, and composed by Hiroki Kikuta. The same guy responsible for the ost's of 'Secret of Mana' and 'Trials of Mana'. Koudelka also led to the creation of the 'Shadow Hearts' series after Kikuta left. Sorry, I just liked Koudelka.
Another funfact is that Kikuta supposedly wanted to make the game even more survival horror in nature but Sacnoth (ex-Squaresoft employees) wanted to make it more like the typical Final Fantasy. And thus, they mixed both. But as the series went on (Shadow Hearts), slowly but surely the franchise got rid of its horror elements..............which was a real shame. Koudelka is probably the game with the most amount of media (of the franchise). In form of a Manga sequel (which might tie some more events together between Koudelka and Shadow Hearts......havent read it tho), Light Novel (re-telling of the game) and Drama CD.
I played and finished Koudelka for the first time a few months ago and I was pleasantly surprised by the great written dialogue and awesome voice acting. The chemistry between the characters and the way they start as enemies but end up caring for each other at the end was so well done. Absolutely underrated in my opinion. (and it's the prequel to Shadow Hearts if anyone is interested in playing the whole series)
I remember playing some Vandal Hearts on my PS3 as a download years ago. I didn't get very far though. Tenchu 2 I've never played but I have a memory of watching one of those gaming VHS tapes where the guy was talking about cheat codes and mentions one about I think one of the Tenchu games. I wish I still had that tape. A number of my friends speak highly of Koudelka so I've been quite curious of it! Ah, of course we've all hears of Thrill Kill LOL! Probably won't ever play it though. Rising Zan looks fun too! I've really only played MGS in a demo, but I had a lot of fun! it's definitely a classic!
You should check out soul of the samurai, it has an interesting story, you get different weapons with different move sets, you can play as 2 different characters, each with their own story, and allows the player the option to change the color of the blood.
Vandal Hearts looks fine, that style has certainly aged better than early 3D games. Anyway, graphics unless they are exceptionally bad are secondary, gameplay is what makes or breaks a game.
That's a great list! One of my personal m-rated favourites is Nightmare Creatures, not a great game but definitely a fun one. I'm curious about the ones that didn't make to the list...

I'm a big fan of Vandal Hearts. Compared to Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts had greater variety of battle conditions, stages designed for you to tactically maneuver through them to trap the enemy and emphasized survival.
I really wish Rising Zan got a remake or a pc port or something. I tried getting into it, but the controls are just really janky. Which is a shame because the writing and comedy are both gold.
@@thatvideogamesshow Eh. Someone could always mod the game and tune up the controls a bit. Then you could play it on an Xbox via duck or Retroarch, I guess. What's needed for that to happen is to get the word out about the game so it can get fans crazy enough to do such a thing.
Technically, silent hill 1 already got a remake in Silent hill Shattered Memories but even without that, Silent Hill 2 is more refined, more engrossing and more loved so it makes sense that it gets a true remake first. Here's hoping it doesn't turn out bad...
Would love to see remasters or remakes for Dino Crisis, Tenchu, and Fear Effect. I think the Fear Effect Remake might've been cancelled. Nightmare Creatures is a fun M rated PS1 game too. Same for Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn.
A modern version of Tenchu would have neon green highlights on every place that you could use the grappling hook, alert meters over every enemy, endless button prompts, and a shit-ton of quicktime events. In short, it would be crap meant for people who can't handle playing a game where they actually have to think.
