Great video. There is a pond near me that has American Bitterns, Green Herons, and Great Blue Herons. The American Bitterns are the most difficult to see there. I suspect they are nearly always there but because they "hide" in the reeds they are hard to see.
My wife and I were on a fishing and bear hunting trip on Eagle lake in Ontario Canada years ago. My hunting stand was at the end of a bay with lots of marsh grass. My wife sat with me while hunting and in the evenings we heard this strange sound coming from the marsh. We could not see the critter making this sound that reminded me of water being emptied from a barrel. I suspected it was some type of bird. I asked a local man from Vermilion Bay what was making the sound. He knew what i was talking about and called it a Marsh Pumper! This happened over 35 years ago and i never was able to find a bird called a Marsh Pumper. By chance i was surfing UA-cam today and found your video. I played it for my Wife and asked her if this birds mating call rang a bell. She said yes ,thats the sound we heard while Bear hunting on Eagle lake. It was awesome to finally ID this cool bird! Thanks so much for your video. It gave us both a great memory of a past adventure over 35 years ago!!!!!
Wow what a very weird call yes, very unique 😮. Awesome bird. We have a variety alike, I think the "Butor étoilé" looks alike your Bittern. It migrates from Africa to 🇨🇭 but in a very small number. Has become very rare and very difficult to find in Europe. Don't know if it's call sounds like this one 😊.
I’ve never seen this is species of bird in person before but I’ve heard that it’s call is so strange that I actually love it. Sometimes the weirdest bird calls can be the most interesting.
We had a wayward Bittern in Levittown, Long Island, NY this afternoon. A professional rehabber tried to net it but it would fly off just far enough not to be able to catch it in the different yards. He said it was probably migrating and got in some sort of trouble. Beautiful bird. I wish it well in it's journey. No water around the area, hoping it finds the coast.
One evening I was at a pond in the woods of upstate New York. I heard a Bittern call and then another called. The two birds chased each in the air in flight over the pond. Two bitterns are better than one!
I was at our local wetlands (Tucson, AZ) this morning and I believe this is what I heard. I thought it was frogs but it was not like any I’d ever heard. I’ve seen a bittern at this location before. Cool! Thank you for this!

They still look silly in the reeds but much less silly than when they pretend to be a reed in the middle of a driveway

Yes, the Eurasian bittern! They have fabulous calls as well, similar to the American bittern.

I've seen these here in Michigan along rivers. They're around Egrets. Definitely a unique noise they make.

The Thousand Islands area of the St Lawrence seaway is a great place to hear and sometimes see them.
