I started my side gig while I had a full time job. I came home from work and worked on the side gig for a year. That was one year of sleeping 4 hours and not having weekends. A year later I went part time on my previous full-time job and put more time into my side gig. That year I worked on making my side gig earn me as much income as my elementary teacher position. The following year I went full time on my side gig and, just like Dave said, you can multiply your income several times over. I am making 3x more than I made teaching. It can be done but it requires tenacity and sacrifice. If it was easy, everyone would do it. You have to want it more than everyone else.
Thank you for this story! I am working a side gig only sleeping 5 hours but I am afraid to go out and look for more customers because I wouldn't be able to handle it.. But it may be worth the sacrifice in the end.

FDM 215 - totally agree. Especially in a renovation business. 15k is nothing. That is one or two bathroom remodels. Even working a full-time 40 hour a week job you can do two of those in way less than a year.
Dave NAILED it. In construction, all you have to do is call people back, estimate accurately, show up and work hard when you say you are going to do so. You will be busy, and you can charge very good money. I started excavation a year ago with almost no expeience. I do those things listed above, and have made enough to go part time at my normal job for the summer. It may end up full time, but the boat isn't quite close enough to the dock for me to jump yet!

I do not agree with Dave's assessment on this, I'm currently doing the same exact thing working jobs on the side while still working a full-time occupation. The problem is, there are many jobs I cannot commit to because it would be impossible to complete after hours or even on the weekend. When you gut someones master bathroom you need to make the remodel as quickly as possible. If this guy has a good clientele he will make $50,000 easily his first year.
absolutely agree here. one of the biggest issues we run into is that jobs are either too big to commit or the smaller job clients want to pay in fruit snacks and peanuts. True but it concerns me that this person made $15K and thinks they're in a position to leave a full time job.
