Last round British pound coin has been minted - BBC News

The Royal Mint is producing the final round pound coin. It is more than 30 years since the now familiar gold-coloured coins were first minted. The new-look replacement will be brought into circulation in 2017.

They are taking the old ones out of cirulation by the end of the year. all 1.4 billion £ worth. Not "printing more money"

I don't think there is an "upper limit" to produce these new coins.
With them, taking in copper, cupro-nickel and brass coins for "recycling", it doesn't surprise me.
Quantitative Easing is still in effect.
