Wow, it sure did make a vast difference, and you got rid of a potential mold problem. Gillian, the way you tackle a problem is awesome, when one method does not work try something else, keep trying until your objective is reached. Keep up the excellent work, stay safe and keep us entertained.
Not sure why you don't just ask for advice. The premier stain remover and I have tried everything is Marykate On Off. This stuff will clean anything. Its acid based, does not harm fiberglass and always works. I have used it on the waterline and inside and it just works. This is the favorite around our marina. Good luck with the paint.
Gillian at one point you said you were being may be over protective. Don’t worry as UA-cam subscribers that is our job to be over protective for you and Jonas LOL.
Try acetone to remove the staining The black rubber from the backing ate into the gelcoat. Your latex paint will end up peeling in time. You need to Sand any surface before painting, especially if you're trying adhere latex to plastic/ fiberglass.
Great before-and-after images. Very satisfying! I love your channel, by the way. I'm just getting into sailing and learning and I'm hoping to get a Catalina 30 or something close to it (which is how I found your channel). It's very inspirational to see your journey.
What city are you in and how far off from a purchase are you ? I own an 80's 30' sailboat that I'll be listing for sale next season . I bought it as a project 4 years ago and she's just about ready for someone to bring her out on an adventure .
@@Pauly__D I'm around the Great Lakes (would rather not get more specific than that in a comments section). But, I won't be buying a Catalina 30 (or a boat of that size) for another couple of years. I still have to learn how to sail and I'll be starting on a smaller boat.
Some strategically placed bits of the kind of double sided tape used to hold sheets of material still on CNC machines might be really useful without a big commitment or mess to deal with.
Nice job. You're just like most of us, we get paint everywhere and we always stir the paint with not the correct paint stirrer... A bit of stick is just perfect for that job...
i wouldn't ever be able to have just done the floors, i would've said the floors now have a different color than the walls and end up painting the entire interior. looks very good though. also the black spots look as it was the fiberglass or another layer of paint.
Haha yes, that definitely crossed my mind as well. But I certainly have enough paint if we decide to do more! Oh that's good to know, we thought perhaps it was something other than just mold
Use an Ozone generator to kill mold through-out. You would need to stay out of the boat when running it (read about it). Bleach usually just gets to the top part of the molds. It doesn't make it to the root of the mold/into the porous surface to prevent it from coming back. Get a mold killer, remover, inhibitor to apply. Paint works 😁, you are a 💎 in the rough ✨
@@BlueMoonLife You work hard to learn new things, I'm definitely impressed, keeping busy by up keeping the boat. I want a Captain& first mate like you!😁
Next time, after the first scrub with bleach, sprinkle baking soda and brush. Baking soda is not as abrasive as cleanser. Also use a long handle brush so that maybe you don’t get bleach on your jeans. A long handle brush gives you more leverage. You need to select painting clothes and use them each time you paint. Also you need newspaper to serve as a cover for your table. Fiberglass is porous.
Interesting, I'll try that next time! Yes I have a set of painting clothes for any big painting projects, because I know I will probably end up getting the paint on them! Thanks for all of the advice :D

Thank you so much! Haha I never seem to get through a paint job without getting some paint on something I was trying to avoid! Yes, we agree... maybe more of that foam flooring or rug or something!
Looks like there was wood under the paint, or was it straight gelcoat? If it's wood I'd sand it down and refinish. If it's gelcoat you could clean it with acetone or wet sand it and polish it. Either way, you'll need to refinish it because that paint won't last long.
good job. But the reason you got mold underneath the old floor was because it wasn't glued well and it didn't have a watertight seal around the edges either. Just a lousy floor installation job.
