I love having dehydrated spinach ready, so I can grab a few leaves to throw into sauces. It's much better than having half of the container get slimy before I can use it.
I totally agree!
@@ThePurposefulPantry yeah, I used to waste a LOT of fresh produce before I started dehydrating. Now I've got jars of beautiful organic dehydrated veggies...and that makes me smile every time I gaze upon them!
Does it turn food green when you add it? Like to a smoothie?
@@tional5266 Yes, if you add it to something light colored.
I bought a NEW rectangular cat litter pan from Dollar General, Family Dollar or maybe Walmart. (Can't remember which.) Bought an inexpensive one on purpose. Don't need for it to be heavy or bulky in size. I dump the contents from my Excalibur dehydrator trays into it. A plastic bristle scrub brush (shaped like an iron with a handle) helps to remove bits that stick. After filling the pan, I make room in the center of the pan to set a jar or other container. If, applicable use a canning funnel. Use a scoop, coffee mug or hands to fill the jar. Loose bits fall right back into the pan. When almost finished, remove the jar from the pan, then shake the remainder into one corner of the pan. Empty that into the jar.
Keeps most of the mess contained. I use this when transferring bulk rice, beans, etc. into jars to be vacuum sealed. This pan comes in handy for sorting things, shucking corn and more.
Hope this helps you resolve a messy problem. Works for me, FWIW....
Great idea. Even if it doesn't help anyone else it definitely helps me. I have a mess of peas to clean off my floor
Good idea.
Is that a food safe container?
Love this idea!!

I have a suggestion on the "lid" of the vitamix. Use plastic or something similar to line the lid to prevent the food dust from attaching to the lid. You probably will need to use a brush but not as much. Love your channel.
I use a large cookie sheet for emptying the dried veggies into ....and I even use a cookie sheet when I'm cutting vegetables or meat. It makes clean up so much easier.
To keep vegetable pieces in the trays, I cut parchment paper and then I fold the paper circles and paper punch all over. This gives air circulation but keeps the vegetables from dropping through the trays.
I have been dehydrating since I was 10 years old back in the seventies. You probably don't remember the ronco dehydrator but I begged my mother and she got me one. We had the best time and the first thing we did were raisins! They were delicious :-) I think that dehydrator is somewhere in my parents basement but they are all gone and I have sold the family home so I have a big dehydrator here now. I'm going to join a CSA so I will end up with a number of things to dehydrate before they go bad! I will also make and can sauces etc.
I use a pizza pan to dump the circular Nesco.
It is bigger than the Nesco trays, and use with wide parchment paper on top.
Then I can usually funnel into jars using my extra large jar funnel.
Not a perfect system, but my system.
You can also water your plants with that extra water
You think like I do. Waste nothing.
Been looking all day for someone to show me how to do this!!
Glad I could help!
Appreciate your help and knowledge
Thank you, been stocking up myself, homesteading, excited I won’t be wasting half a bed of spinach
I'm so excited. I have successfully made some green powder (spinach and kale), tomato paste powder and jalapeno powder.
Haven't tried any fruit powders yet but it's coming up soon.
I just wanted you to know I am learning so much for you and I appreciate you very much. thanks
Wonderful!
Brussel Sprout Leaves!! This is my fav cooked veggie and will soon be added to my Green Powders.
I dump my dehydrated greens onto a sheet of wax paper when removing trays. Have also used my silicone baking sheets. No cleanup, no mess
Thank you! Great instructional video, wow, oodles of info!
That is awesome, I can't wait too try this!
I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos! Your videos are the reason I started dehydrating. Before I started watching them, I thought dehydrating was only to make jerky or dried fruit - neither of which I like. I've only been dehydrating for a couple of months now, and I'm starting to build up a nice little pantry! Not only that, but I'm able to really take advantage of gluts in the "Reduced for Quick Sale" produce area; red bell peppers are usually a luxury for me since they're so expensive, being able to preserve them when they went reduced means I have lots to cook with!
YAY! Way to go!
WHAT A GREAT IDEA! I firmly believe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. AND I loved the little fan-type brush you used to retrieve EVERY SPECK of precious dehydrated green powder!! I found your channel as a result of Mary, over at "Mary's Nest," who so highly recommended you & I'm so glad I followed up on her referral. I've been dehydrating since the late 1970s & still have my first dehydrator, a Ronco, which I ordered after seeing an advertisement on television. When the pandemic arrived & many of us were required to stay home or do self-imposed isolation in the early weeks, I wanted to utilize my time learning new skills, as well as expanding on some well-established & long-time skills. Dehydrating was one of them. I now have three dehydrators & my old Ronco still works, however, I prefer using my newer dehydrators with digital temperature & timer settings.
Just found your channel and subscribed, thank you for sharing your wisdom! Much appreciated!
You are amazing with your knowledge and kindness in sharing that knowledge with us! Thank you and blessings on you, friend.
, I watched your video for the first and want to thank you for teaching me something new. I have this cupboard ful of jars that have dried food in them so I got out my blender and powdered my apples first and then some zucchini. I just put a dent in one shelf. I have ordered a Harvest Right and that's what you were going to talk on, what a nice surprise, thank you.
Well done young lady!
Thanks for the tip about the Bright Kitchen edged silicone trays!
You are so welcome!
THANX! I found your video on dehydrating greens to powder. Great, many thanks for your help.
You are welcome!
Thank you for the video. I loaded my nesco and bio chef with spinach. Can't wait to have my powder on hand. 💓💓💓
I dump into a 13x9 storage container, then use my canning funnel to transfer into my jar.
Wow!! Great information
Thank you so much found more ways to eat my vegetables I really appreciate you thanks again
I have gotta get one of these salad spinners, love that. I have only just started the video 😂👍👍
I love mine so much!!!
Thanks! Good tip about not using the screens on Nesco if drying large leaves to speed up drying time! I always have used the small screens, next time I'll try it with using no screens.
I like the fact you use that powder in a lot of your cooking, great idea. Thanks for the video
My pleasure 😊
what an awesome idea;going to do this from now on so I have some on hand for soups, baking and smoothies
Hope you enjoy
Thank you I really appreciate you you’re the best so smart enjoy your day
I learnt so much..thank you for sharing.
This will be great for making my smoothies
But you can throw fresh or frozen kale/spinach into smoothies for like way less work lol.
@@jasonl1184 I agree, with you. I do however live in the Caribbean and kale and spinach are very expensive and sometimes hard to come by. This is a good option for me. I also started planting Kale but spinach don't grow well. Too hot.
OMG, where have you been all my life?! Lol
Such a wonderful idea. I never thought about dehydrating my geens. I dehydrate everything else but never thought about the greens. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Love dehydrating. Got an Excalibur for my daughter and son too. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!!!
Thanks for watching!
New sub here. I also have a Nesco and the way I get everything off of the trays is to smoosh the dried foods thru the grates when I can. The base catches everything pretty good and it's easier to dump into containers. I usually dry greens and frozen veggie mixes (corn, carrot, pea, green beans) and individual frozen veg and fruits. Hope this helps someone! Much love from Oklahoma
Your bread bowl or any large salad bowl would make a good "catch-all" for your dried greens. Thanks for the video. I am just learning, ad I appreciate your hands on step by step method of instruction. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the instruction! Spinach & kale is exactly what I was looking for. I got a dehydrator as a gift years ago and only recently started to use it. I was happy to see you have the same Nesco as me 😊. Thanks also for your safe jerky instructions on your website. (The salad spinner looks fun; gonna have to get one)
Glad it was helpful!
Dabbling with herbs I find using a box or box lid makes it much easier to empty the trays into and then putting the mass of it into the container by hand and dumping the last little bit over to a corner and pouring it in. Sliding the tray into a bag works well too.
I like this idea, great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting, i wanna try this to
I’m learning so much from you and am a new subscriber. I have been dehydrating for awhile but have ramped up the things I haven’t done before. You have given me some great ideas! I do a lot of bananas, apples, pears, lemons, broccoli and now thanks to you, frozen veggies and it does save freezer space! Can’t wait to try the marshmallows for my grands. I have 9 and all will get their own qt jar for Christmas this year. Thank you!
Your grands will LOVE them!
HI! I've recently ran across your videos and I am learning alot binge watching. I have a little hack to help prevent some spinach powder getting all up in the lid, you can put plastic wrap over the blender container and then put the lid on. :)
Absolutely in love with dehydrating. Altho I’ve only done spinach and kale. The carmelized onion powder was brilliant and adding green powder to brownies!! Also frozen veggie powder. So much great information. Many would say make sure everything is organic.... I can’t do that.
I just received my new Cosori dehydrator and you are my best teacher! This is the greatest appliance ever besides my air fryer. Thanks so much for all your help, so glad I found your channel. You rock!
YAY! Have fun with it!
I use frozen its already blanched chopped and you get more for the money the powder is awesome in my AWESOME SPINICH ARTICHOKE MUSHROOM RANCH DIP
Lol! Glad to see I'm not the only one that has that problem of everything going everywhere off the Nesco trays.
New to dehydration thank you... I have to eat now soooo sooo much veggies. Specially spinach and kale.. inflammation killers
I can’t wait to try this. I bought a refurbished vitamix 8 years ago. Still works great and about half the cost.
Hope you enjoy it!
so helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this detailed video. This year i have an excess of curly kale and am afraid it will go to waste as weather heats up. I have a nesco dehydrator and am gonna try this. I learned to like using kale in everything simply because it grows for me!
I grow all my greens on drip tape so a lot of the times when I harvest I don’t even have to wash it. A little raised bed can produce massive amounts of kale.
I really have been enjoying your videos!
I’m going to make this powder this week! I bought a dehydrator a while ago and have made hardly anything, but now I see all your videos and such good tips!
Me too. I've had a dehydrator for at least 10 to 15 years and have never used it. I think I will try this though. I hope yours does well.
Oooohhhhhh!!!! I just did a veggie powder in the past couple of days and am going to put it back in the dehydrator so I make sure it is totally dry. I added it to a Ramen bowl and it was delicious, would hate for it to go bad~
much appreciate these videos. I have lots of turnip and beet greens to dehydrate
Have fun!!
Also, using a piece of plastic over the top of the the vitamix/blenders and then putting the lid on helps powder not get up into the lid, saving product, not wasting y'all's hard work , and making clean up easier to
Blessings, julie
Thank you for this video I was wondering how to do this.
You are welcome!
Putting some food wrap film under your lid help contain the powder. Thanks for sharing the video; nice work.
You can place shrink wrap on the top of your Vitamix canister to avoid getting your lid full of the powder and stays clean. Like your video.
I put my second drying on parchment lined cookie sheets in my oven at the lowest setting for about an hr, much better for putting away
If you don't want to use the new kitty litter tray, there are a multitude of plastic bins in the storage area of your store. One should be right for you, including the hint of putting the jar in the center to fill.
I just ordered a dehydrator as my CSA is starting next week so I'll have all kinds of stuff that I won't be able to eat right away so I figured I'd dry it all. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome!
If you add a generous sprinkle of salt to the water it lessens the surface tension of the water and all the dirt and grit fall right off. I used to wash my greens four or five maybe six times, I was a fanatic. Now I only have to do it twice. LOL (fanatics die hard, don'cha know?)
Just subscribed you’re fantastic!
Welcome aboard!
I use the silicone trays in my nesco so is easier to do veggies. I'll try with my kale
It's amazing how little that much dries down to...I ended up with just a half gallon jar of green powder from more than a dozen huge curly kale plants.
Yep - which is why it is such a great way to stock a pantry and save space!!
I have a very big stainless steel “bread bowl” and I dump my dehydrator trays in it, no mess and it catches all the stray runaways !
I can then pour it into a smaller bowl if needed to dump into jars !
I'm doing cucumber chips at the moment, but will have to stop at the store again to pick up some spinach and kale. What a great way to add leafy greens to meals.
My boyfriend has all his teeth removed due to needing this done before radiation. It makes eating fresh spinach and kale very difficult. Thank you so much for these instructions!
I use a narrow plastic tote which the trays fit down in to clean off trays. Keeps all of it in one place and makes it easy to pour into a wide mouth funnel.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Thanks
I empty my dried leaves in a clean trash bag. Before I put it in my Vita-Mixer I use my rolling pin and crush the leaves a bit. I use my canning funnel to empty into the Vita-Mixer.
I use a clear taller tub and put my whole nesco tray vertically sideways and dump into the tub...never makes a mess or loses any stray pieces..easy to crunch or pour..so much easier
Thanks for sharing your tip!
I empty my dehydrated products into big disposable aluminum foil pan, with parchment paper in the bottom.
Make it easier to check dryness, as well being able to use the parchment paper to dump into blender, jar etc.
I have both a Excalibur and a very old round dehydrater.
So the large aluminum tray, makes it very easy to dump my trays.
I love your videos! What about using a large rectangular tub to dump your dehydrated veggies into once dry. Then you can scoop them up to blend
That's what I do. I bought a dish pan at the Dollar Tree and it's perfect for this purpose.
The fact that you add written notes for clarification is very helpful. Please leave them up a bit longer. Love your work and how you engage your subscribers.
You can always pause the video or visit and print off the instructions on the webpage.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thanks
I saw someone else put a piece of saran wrap across the top of the blender before blending, to avoid the green powder going into the lid of the mixer.
You could use a potted plant tarp with raised edges. Amazon has them.
Very nice💖
Thanks 🤗
I'm going to have to try this. One tip, standard blenders are the same size as a small mouth canning jar. I think I will try the spinach in a jar to blend to eliminate the transferring of ultra fine powder. I think adding more and more and blending could get the jar most of the way filled up without having to transfer. I also use canning jars on my blender to make smoothies. No cleanup other than rinsing the blades and washing my jar that I use to drink my smoothie.
Good luck!
Would you skip the extra drying step? Have you done this without problems with moisture?
Do you sanitize your jars first when putting your vegetable powder into the jars?
I usually flip stuff into the lid and then let it slide to the bottom. I use a flexible cutting board as a funnel. Or I use a sheet of parchment paper to dump onto.
Buy one of those very flexible baskets from Dollar tree and just dump all in. It folds real good and can be so easy to just pour into jars blenders whatever...I have that round one like yours and I saw a lady doing this...makes so easy
I have small mesh screens that fit my nesco. Theyre flexible and line the regular trays
Hi, I use a large aluminum drip tray for the bottom of my oven that I pour the contents of the tray onto and then I fold it in half and pour it into my container. It’s great because it holds its v-shape as I pour and I can set it down on the counter if I need to use my hands for something else. Thanks
Great tip!
My sister and family live in Texas and I will be moving there as soon as my cat has left this world. He didn't do well in this move where I purchased my house so he needs to stay in one place now. But I will be moving to Lufkin one day! :-)
This is great the only thing is that you have to be mindful of the fact that for example some fruits or vegetables may have vitamin k for example and people that are on blood thinners have to consider that. So it's important not to overdo it it's better to simply have it in the proportion of what you would have normally on a plate
Finally. Someone who washes their food. You’ve got my full attention. Washing prevents listeria.
Good stuff. I'm reading a lot of questions from fellow viewers which I'm pretty sure they could answer very easily themselves if they stopped for a moment to consider!
Not hating, just saying c'mon folks you're more than capable of relying on your own sense 😉
This video looks so exciting, my greens take a lot of space in the freezer. Powders would be a lot easier
So glad I found your channel! You are a wealth of information! I want to learn as much as I can about proper food preservation. Can the spinach powder be stored long term and if so how? Oxy absorber, or desiccant packet? Do you have a video on types of foods for long term storage and how to prepare them for storing and whether to use oxy or dessicant packets? Im having difficulty finding out whether to freeze beans, rice, etc before storing. Do you have info on that? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us 😊
I'm also interested in dehydrating beans and lentils.
I empty my dehydrator trays into a 9”x13” metal baking pan. I then fill my jars or bags by keeping them over the pan so any spills are caught as I-fill them.
Very well explained. T Y
Glad it was helpful!
I have a nesco and when I dehydrate anything I need to empy. I have a large bowl bigger than my trays then I empty my trays in the bowl then go from there.
Use the Clean-a- Screen for the NESCO. Then dump the whole thing off into the bowl.
I'm a bit messy myself. my dear.. lol GOD BLESS YOU
missed the first spinach planting, but it's not too late to plant; now i have a use for the kale my wife won't use.
I just yesterday done my kale, and last week I done my green onions from my garden, and made green onion salt in small jar, my dougther loves that salt.Over all grow season a dry much I can and mix later, make soup mix, make them like seasoning mix. Love kale dry, smells soo good.
Sounds great!
Can we have recipie for green onion salt?
I would love the green onion salt recipe as well.
@@fearnot1780 Hi recipe is in this comments Cheryl ,one above your comments.

Just started watching, and excited to learn! How do you use the powders? Edit found your website with a list! Can you also use the green powder is just water and drinking? Like how they sell green powder to do that with? Second edit… I was too quick, and see now it says they do not dissolve in water. Haha. Thank you for sharing! Excited to try
Hi there I just came across your channel and glad that I did. Just subbed. Thank you for sharing how you dehydrate your greens and turning it into powder. The small glass jar at the 17:00 time stamp where did you purchase that from? I would like to purchase some of those. 😊
I wish I could remember, I have had it forever.
