  • I compression test my supposedly blown RX8 (low compression) to determine if it does in fact need a rebuild. I have no idea what could have happened to this car to make it have compression like this. I guess we will find out when we tear apart the engine!

This is a pretty cool series. At some point I’ll have to rebuild my RX8 engine, so it will be kind of cool to see what will go into that process. One thing I would change though is the videos are too short. I know you probably have the whole series already recorded, but in the future I would make the videos around 10-20 minutes long. 👍

Yeah I actually recorded these videos about 9 months ago, they get longer as the series continues. The 7th video (planning to drop that one Feb. 13th, however I have yet to start editing it) is looking to be the longest and most complete so you will have that to look forward to!

Hey man thanks for the video it is awesome. Just wanted to say I tested my 8s compression and the hot/cold difference was about 10/11psi. Good luck and keep bringing the excellent videos.

My engine is still running okay, but is a little low on power (166 HP on the crank, 4 port). A spare engine is waiting now for more than one year in my garage. Your series is welcome, thanks for creating this content, very well structured!

welcome to rotary life, bro. My Rx7 had 3 engines in it and now I am on my 2nd RX8 engine and what is sad the RX8 was babied all it's life.

That's probably what ended up killing it...these motors are supposed to be redlined all the time

For the black car, you can also try straightening the oil cooler fins with a pick and pocket screwdriver. My car seemed to run a bit cooler in the mountains after doing this.

My 04 rx8 is running low compression in the back rotar with only 68k miles on the car. I really couldn’t believe it untill i saw this one with 70 sum k miles on it. Rotarys 🅱️. Gotta love em

Hello! I'm also a mechanical engineer(student) with a love for mazdas and rotaries. I've spent the past two summers rebuilding odd ball rotaries. If you ever want to chat about rotaries or mazda!

I'd love to see a decent automatic transmission swap on an Rx8. I'm thinking of a best price performance engine and transmission swap for rx8. What would you recommend as an enthusiast? I'd like to keep its weight distrubition and balance as is.

I would have liked more detail on disconnecting the eccentric shaft speed sensor. I guess you were able to reach it from underneath?

Had mine 7 years 04 231 on 90000 miles and original engine I’m always looking out for any hiccups so fitted new coils plugs and leads and now all the gauges for oil and water temp is it just hot starts problems when it’s going to lose compression

Almost looks like it may be a bad rebuild by how high the compression is on the rear rotor. After I rebuilt mine with new Seals/housings I made similar compression. I could have used new rotors, but I plan on Rew swapping in the near future so my MSP isn't planning on 100k miles. Likely if I rebuild the rx8 MSP engine it will get new rotors machined for turbo applications.
Stick with mazda OEM seals, get new balanced rotors machined for deeper Rx7 seals if you think you might turbo the build. Spend a lot of time researching how to properly tolerance the side seals.

Will you replace the apex/side seals with new ones? I am asking cause i have a blown engine and plan to rebuild the front rotor aswell so would be nice if you can send me the used apex/side seals for a little bit of cash if you would replace all of them anyway :)

so, if one rotor is in bad condition , you replace it ( or try to fix/clean it) and then....it is fine and can work??

Video recorded so as not to find out exactly which candle is removed, lower or upper, and where the tester is connected: /
Because as soon as the pressure on the upper opening is working .
