Simon, your videos have really inspired me to become a filmmaker. Thanks for making all the videos. You're the best. You've taught me that filmmaking is not all about the gear you have or money, but the story behind the camera.

Yeah. Me too. He inspired not only to be a filmmaker, but to be a STORYTELLER!
This is so much more important and I think that's exactly what he wanted.
Better saying: exactly what he found out.
I watch him for a long long time and in the beginning was just a way to force his discipline and make things.
This video, for instance, is clearly result of a research of the trendings topics that he could use (and he did it another times - with reviews, link baits, ads without freedom of speech - just to find out that the results were less than expected. Maybe his own audience forcing him just to be true to himself).
But thru the way he found that what's really worth is STORYTELLING.
Every aspect of filmmaking just revolves around storytelling.
I personally don't like his visual style (too dark, too gloomy).
Indeed, I miss the apple eating in the end of the movies (his "visual signature").
And furthermore, he influenced lots of people not to rush for the most expensive gear, but to be the most active learner.
That's why I enjoy so much this channel and his work.
What's the stories you wanna talk about, Matthew?
Why do you think they'll be good/inspiring/helpful/funny for the others?

One of my videos went viral last year (it currently has just under half a million views) and a video I posted last week ended up in the national news. I'm by no means an expert, but I thought I'd chip in with what I've learnt.
There's one major factor I attribute to each of those successes: originality.
If you're doing what everyone else is doing, then there's no reason for people to share your video because they can see it elsewhere. Try to find a question that hasn't been answered, so people will click on it to see how it turns out. In a culture full of the easily bored, people just want to watch what they haven't already seen.

      Nice filmmaking, dude.
      Big project.
Lots of work. Nice transitions. Humour.
      Something unusual.
Even though the technical part is not that great, the principles of making a good movie are there.
Still is funny cause the money and time you've spent was totally not worthy hehehe

    • @MattMzansi
      @MattMzansi 7 років тому +2

That's how it all starts. You see a shit ton of views come in and you're PROUD.
Then you see people doing the same and raking in thousands of dollars.
Worse thing to experience is seeing your hard work get stolen and some bastard profit off it. That's when the money factor really kicks in.
Getting money in will allow you to upgrade equipment and make work you're super proud of (and still get paid).

I'd always wondered what makes a video viral, because for most of those videos, the production quality isn't as high as many people reading this comment would strive to have theirs. So thinking of it like this made a bit more sense.

Thanks for all the information you and a lot of other sources provide about creating content on UA-cam. I am having my first experience with one of my videos going viral ("the bucket"). Apparently my combination of "cute" and "animals" and "a clever camera angle" worked. Cheers!

Hardly, less than 5% of these viral videos creators knew that there video would be viral. I think its just matter of luck as nobody can decode the formula of a viral video apart from the videos posted by some high ranking channel or UA-cam Celebrity. I have a video which has the potential to go viral like "Charlie bit my finger". The video is about my little 6 month daughter laughing hilariously when i honk with a valentine balloon near to her face.

Excellent points. On top of this Casey has an advantage when it comes to turning his potentially viral content....viral. Cuz he has established a huge media platform. However, that very media platform was established from scratch, thanks to viral videos (and quality content for people to discover once introduced to his channel, like I discovered when his bike lane video turned viral and I started watching all of his videos). A good example of this is Prince Ea whom a good friend of mine has helped out since early on before he became huge on social media, a handful of his videos since the Why I Think This World Should End video have turned viral, and those who haven't have still gotten more views than his videos prior to the big hit video. :)

  • @airbusisawesome

Recently a mediocre comment of mine on an MKBHD video got 4100 likes in a day.
My first video I ever posted on UA-cam, essentially a slideshow put to music (I was 12 when I posted it), got 4 million views and my channel got 2k subs with worthless content (I've since taken it down because it's so terrible, and I'm trying to focus on better content)
But it seems whenever I make something I'm genuinely proud of, the Internet dismisses it.
I almost feel like there's a limit to the quality of viral videos-most of them can't be above a mediocre quality. If they're too shiny and perfect, they won't become popular.
Anyway, just my thoughts. Great video as always, Simon!

    • @DSLRguide

+create it's all a mystery! My personal view is that at least 80% of the videos that go viral did so for good reason. Thay said, there's plenty of great content that gets missed out, and the viral stuff usually isng my personal favourite. I think you're onto something with the quality limit, there are only a small percentage (excluding music videos) that have high production value. Evidently that's not what people are looking for on YT

Im only halfway through the video at the moment so you might have come to the same conclusion as me, but i did a similar study a couple of years ago and the conclusion i came to was emotional resonance. The more emotional intensity the video has the more it takes off. But there are alot of factors that go into why something has emotional resonance and that's hard to codify.

lot of work, great video, thank you! I like the way you look at things, good perception.
    Commentary:
Is there not multiple type of audiences for multiple types of viral ? The nyan cat is a "geek" thing that went viral in the gaming community. The history of dance as you said is nostalgic and intergenerational so even my grandmother have seen it, but she have never seen the nyan cat. So I feel as the "virality' of a video has a lot more to do with the audience it reaches than the video itself. The video could be a manifestation of the collective subconscious of a community, at the right place and right time. A certain community wants to rally and speak, they need something beyond organization and logic. The snowboarding video of Casey Neistat was what all New-Yorkers were thinking at the time: "man, I wish I could snowboard those streets...". They were all shaking to do it but Casey manifested it. Maybe all the gaming community were waiting for an hallucinogenic cat flying in space with rainbows, maybe all the 30yrs old and + were waiting for a dude to dance their teenage years, maybe all the fat ugly ladies were waiting for a fat ugly lady to sing wonderfully and prove the slim blondes wrong, ect.
If you can find a community without a voice, then what video would speak in their name? Beyong organization, beyond logic, beyond mind. A viral video comes from the heart. I often feel that people don't know what they want to see, but once they've seen it, they know that was it. This feeling is always from the heart. Maybe the common thread between all viral videos is authenticity.

Wow. Goes really deep. Thank you really for this video. I love the humility in your videos. Enjoy it.
What do you think about an video about the self-confidence to go infront of the camera. The courage to vlog next to a crowd of people and don't care what they think? To think about reactions of the family/friends/colleagues to your video?
I think you understand what i mean.
    Best regards and
    Thank You!

One of the coolest things about your channel is your voice, guy. You could rename you channel "the quiet filmmaker" it would be all right. You should record audiobooks.

Cool conclusion to your presentation; Always interesting these videos you make Simon. Those young folks could have used classic car for snowballing through New York, give a more nostalgic Christmas look.
