    Love that "random weld bead" simulation of "rough forgings"! The effort expended on your build is obvious, and the results genuinely breath taking on a vid. I can only imagine how gorgeous it must be in person! Top notch build

    Hi all, it's been some time since I last checked in here. Thanks for all the comments good or bad, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Sorry I missed some of your inquiries over the years.
    This project was more about the build over anything else. I still have the bike sitting in the same spot it was where it came to life. Pretty much once the build was over the bike has been covered and stored. I really need to take some time and get it running again. I've started to have some issues with the paint bubbling on the tank in a few spots but no plans or desire to address them anytime soon.
    The key factor in any project is to have a vision and see it through, no matter how long it takes. I spent years collecting parts here and there, by the time the tires were put on they had already started showing slight signs of age. I had always feared that someday I wouldn't be able to acquire an all white tire and figured I better purchase them while I could..now you can find just about any color.
    This bike was something that lingered in my head for a long time, so long that I knew if I didn't start it would never get done. The Indian Scout head badge that is shown briefly was purchased a good number of years prior to starting this project. I knew when I saw it that some day it would adorn the front of my bike when I got around to building it.
    Years past and the badge sat in container in the garage just waiting to someday be mounted. Finally after all the pondering and daydreaming of having such a bike it became a reality that if I don't start it will never be.
    I had to dig deep considering I had never built anything like this in the past. I can remember countless days standing in the garage, looking at a blank canvas drafting ideas in my head...only to find that another day had past with nothing to show. Once I finally got started I realized that all of the days I thought were wasted in thought came to light. Idea's that had been tucked away in some forgotten corner of my head all seemed to fall together...some good, some...meh! we won't talk about those.
    Moral of the story is that you have to start, do your homework, stay safe and have fun doing it. Plans can always change especially when you're starting from scratch and without a blueprint....but hey! that's part of the fun.
    Once again thanks for all the comments....I really appreciate your thoughts and kind words.

      Is that a lifan engine on that sportsman flyer frame

    • @classic3spds
      @classic3spds  3 роки тому

      Yes it is a 100cc Lifan motor.
      Im not sure what brand the bicycle frame was that I cut apart for the rear. From seat stay forward to the neck was all hand built, the front forks are from a 50’s Monarch bicycle.
      I still get a chuckle out of one of the comments below about the crappy Lifan motor.
      I think I paid $100 for it on eBay at the time, it was brand new in the box. For appearance sake the motor really wasn’t the look I had planned but for the money it was hard to pass up.

  • @classic3spds
    @classic3spds  11 років тому +1

    The motor is OK for what it is, right now the bike is really just a piece of static art in my garage. I haven't had it started for a couple of years....no reason for it, but once I completed it, I was done.
    It is not the most comfortable bike to be on for more than a trip around the block.
    Yes they are bicycle tires, I had purchased them years prior to the build and just used them.
    I am considering going with a more appealing size tire, but cannot justify the cost at this time.
    Thanks!

  • @classic3spds

    Ahh! ..the lugs, I consider them my favorite mistake.
    This project was my first experience with a MIG welder, ...one of the parts I was working on got botched up a little so in retaliation for my lost effort I used the piece for practice.
    I had lines,dots and splatter everywhere,...so I continued with a random pattern of what turned out to be somewhat of my liking. I have always been a big fan of fancy lug work on bicycle frames and decided to strengthen (hide) my amateur welds.

    Beautiful build ! Was nice to see a bicycle based chassis using an actual motorcycle engine rather than a 2 stroke 50cc clip on or a 4 stroke lawnmower engine. The 1 comment I have is the front fork, as I'm currently working on a project I was thinking of using one of the Monarch forks you used , but 2 friends who've built bikes warned me that the monarch forks really don't hold up well as the back forks aren't welded in good & can break. They both recommended the Sunlite Deluxe if I wanted a springer style front end. I would however think any issues w/the fork could be fixed by welding it in where the fork tube meets the triple tee as that seems to be the problem, they weren't welded in strongly enough. & hopefully anyone reading through the comments and thinking of building one will see this & realize that there may be an issue. TY for creating this video & sharing it with the rest of the motorized bicycle community, I think its a great build & I love how you did a re-creation of the exact board tracker frame. I wish you many years of safe & fun riding

    ...considering I did not have any prior experience building anything like this before, it was very time consuming. I didn't have any really set plans with the exception that I had a idea years earlier that I wanted to build something of a Board Track style bike. As time went on I finally decided to start seriously thinking,... If I don't start on this it will never get done.
    Time was not a factor once I got started, I did not have a dead line or schedule that would interfere with having fun.

    The pumps you see on early bikes were actually an oil pump. The gas tanks were sectioned inside, one for gas and the other for oil to lubricate the motor. The one on this bike is really my choke lever, the cable is hidden inside the copper line that runs down to the carburetor.

    This is a photo I found on the web of just the bike. I scaled the dimensions on a copy using a protractor and ruler.
    I based everything off of the the main frame tubing (figuring that it was 1" tube). If I remember the size of my original print gave me a ratio of 3/16 = 1".
    After that it was just a matter of determining what the original bike may have measured and working it into my project to accommodate my specific needs such as engine clearance, and to keep the bike somewhat to scale

If I told you that I have never used a Mig welder before this project you would think I was lying....well its true. Let me tell you I did struggle quite a bit on this project, as I have never done anything like a total build up from scratch. The best place to start is in your head, have a vision, lay it all out and be able to adapt to change. This is a garage built, no CAD design, build as you go project.Thanks

    👍👀 what size drive shaft or what is it? Where can i find one? I have a 58 Monark Super Deluxe I want to modify. Is that a bunch of spot welds, grinded down(between copper wire trim)?? Thats a killer bike you made! Much appreciation & thanks for sharing.

    • @classic3spds
      @classic3spds  5 років тому +1

      Thank you appreciate the comment.
      I don’t recall what size that shaft is. I bought it and the sprockets through McMaster Carr.
      Since the sprocket on the motor is so far out board to line up with the rear tire a jack shaft was needed.
      Not exactly spot welds just random MIG weld. After a mishap with my poor welding skills I liked what I was seeing and decided to incorporate it into different parts of the frame.
      There was no set plan or design other than some measurements I calculated off the drawing so I built as I went and change things when needed .

    • @datnotme9921
      @datnotme9921 5 років тому

      @@classic3spds McMaster Carr,aurora, OH isn't too far from here. Pretty cool. Is there a name or part # to that driveshaft? That 100cc engine, is it made by cdi? I've watched a bunch of these videos and I'm most impressed with yours. I loved the story you wrote on it too. The head badge journey, making its way back on. I like weld accents. Terrific work

    • @classic3spds
      @classic3spds  5 років тому +1

      The shaft is called a keyed shaft they come in a variety of diameters I do not have a part number. Obviously the sprocket would be matched to the diameter of the shaft as well as the chain size and number of teeth that you would be using. If I recall the jack shaft set up on mine is a 1:1 ratio.
      The motor is 100cc Lifan, Chinese copy of a Honda motor. I got a very good deal on it so that’s what I went with.
      Thanks again for the comments!

      He says that it was a 100cc Lifan motor . Of all the chinese engines lifan is one of the best as their company is owned by either honda or yamaha & makes their engines in china to save $$$. You could also use a 6.5hp ( 212cc) lawnmower style engine with a Comet torque converter, that setup will do close to 55mph with the right sprocket set up ( should cost 300$ or less for the engine, transmission , sprockets & chain )
