Lucky Thibeault brought me here. A true legend and champion from Brockton, Ma.
What a beautiful machine...as you said, "when men" etc. Terrible race conditions, RIP all the riders and spectators! Thank you so much for posting this
Looks dangerous, I love it! In those days the carb throttle was really for setting the air fuel mix because it would change threw out the throttle range, no good for racing!. On the left twist grip you had timing, you set the mix and time and let her rip. Like he says you control the engine speed with the kill switch. I know this because my Grand father raced, he had the remenants of some old indian racers under his house, never knew where the pieces went.
And a lovely backfire out of them open pipes, when operating tge kill switch!
Love the Indians. Since it's too expensive for a real one, I plan on building a Motorized Bicycle and make it look like a real Indian. This video has helped with some of the detail shots for my little project.
Boardtracker Racers rarely made it through their career with out either sustaining serious career ending injuries or death. One famous Boardtrack Racer who lived to tell about this was named JIM DAVIS. He was an INDIAN Factory Rider at one point and basically retired after many years of Racing unscathed. He lived to be over a 100 yrs old and has a Plaque honoring him at the Daytona Speedway Memorial wall. Boardtrack Racers were real Racers. Imagine riding a 1000cc engine motorcycle that was essentialy a bicycle frame and tires at speeds of over a hundred miles per hour on a steep banked board track made of rough old pine 2x4"s. You can see if you watched old vintage footage why many of them perished doing this extremely dangerous type racing. The sport was literally banned nation wide from fatalities that even involved spectators...s.m.
A lot like powerlifting...I quit when things began to hurt too much!
This bike is gorgeous. Love the red. And the engine looks smashing. I really love the look of the top of the engine in particular. Thanks for restoring history
Can you just imagine if it RAN??.
Came across this video randomly, very informative. I highly appreciate people like you uploading these sort of video's.
Thank you!
Back in the day when boats were made of wood and men were made of steel..😉
Thanks for describing things in laymen terms, most of these videos on boardtrackers either talk in motorhead tech lingo or just point and say " that thingy there does something I think?" Like the tidbit of info on the kill switch being a partial hacksaw blade, and now I understand how that actually worked.
I love how you can see the weld, that put the back cone of the tank on, even through the paint. it was probably done with a gas welder or brazed on or possibly even soldered
All of the bikes back then everything was soldered I have a 1923 even the frame in the front end is solder assembled that is Factory done
amazing creator early era,,,amazing
And Yes Ti was supper cool that your
Board tracking Grandfauther Saved his
Stock bike, To even have a bike of that vintage is
Awsome, Koodos to the boy with the mohawk helmet.
Cause he will know just what I'm talking about.
100 years back..
Hoped I would hear it run, oh well, mine will be running soon enough.
Thanks for posting this
Excellent documentary about the subject, very well filmed!
At 4:41 Incorrect information. The National Organization in 1919 only banned competition on tracks under a Mile. At 5:12 Another error. Board Track Racing did not come to an end in 1928! Partial demise was when the Great Depression hit in1932. But... Select Board Tracks still operated until the late 30's. They were also running sidecars, midget cars and race automobiles. At 2:55 Truth is, there were hundreds of people killed over the years as riders and or spectators. No one incident shut Board Track Racing down completely, if you're referring to the infamous Eddie Hasha Match race crash on Sept. 9th 1912.
You are correct, but yet these type of statements on the internet that mention a horrific wreck, being the end of boardtrack racing is clearly and factually not true. And the big accident many refer to seems to be the 1912 Eddie Hasha Accident that happened in Newark NJ. which killed 4 young teenage boys, and one adult male, as well as injuring 20 other spectators, and Eddie Hasha the rider of the motorcycle and the last place racer Johnny Albright, when Hasha's bike re-entered the track slid down to the bottom and Albright hit it, flew off and died 4 hours later at the hospital. It did close down the Newark Motordrome, but Boardtrack racing had not even reached it's peak until about 1922/22 and slowly from then on.. And your reasons are correct according to my research into the fascinating history of boardtrack racing. I'm compiling lists of all those who raced professionally, accidents, deaths interesting race stories, so little is out there, especially in film footage sadly.
Imagine sitting on that at 100 mile, what a rush, it's such a beautiful looking bike
I had the pleshure of meating one of these drivers when I was about 16 years old,
I was riding my motorized bicycle Built to look like a Board track ,bike past a local park,
A young man, Sudenly Ran out to the street from the Party at the benches and flaged me down. He explained it was his Grtand fuathers 97th birthday, and had asked me to come over and join them. He liked my Cycle. For lack of better things to do and in a curios mood? I came over. I spent the next ten min. Explaining my cycle
Did he say....1000cc?? On whats basically a bicycle frame? No throttle? No brakes? At 100mph? Where can I get one?!
Let's not forget that women also board track raced. Very nice, thanks.
It's much quieter than I thought it would be.
In recordings, yeah. But in reality, its a straight pipe with no muffler. Especially in the 20's, motorcycles were deafening. I remember seeing a group of 20's cruiser bikes in a club, and the sound was ridiculous.
***** Yeah, those are.
So... no throttle? And it just gradually goes faster and faster.... hell yes
Sounds terrifying I love it
AMAZING !!! HE are awesome, INDIAN the best race bike
Insane. Fantastic, but insane. Great video and coverage.
amazing video! very informative and passionate. I do have a small question. I noticed the tires were 26x2.5. I was under the impression that these bikes mostly had 28" wheels. Just curious.
They make bike kits 70cc that fit in the palm of your hand that do 85mph
Amazing 🙏
I was going to give you the link, but My Borrowed computer has had it's Faviorits bar cleared.
I'll look and see if I can find the guy's name and send you the info.
It’s to bad it’s missing the original throttle and spark advance linkages. There were no cables on these early bikes and linkage they used is really something to see.
It’s to bad this was from a time that restoring the bike was the way to go rather than keeping everything original as is now the preference. It’s B only original once. Very cool bike though and that’s for sharing it!
I love the ww1 helmet in the back is it real?
Pretty cool stuff
where can i buy one???
The narrator @3:20 is from the movie - Goodfellas
what, no drive Chain?
@MyMMC both of you must be old timers.. back when you walked to school in the snow up hill both ways.
Fantastic video, thanks for posting.
Wish it would of shown it running
great story..
Indian never die:-)
When men were men. Now they are not men. Somehow, they have magically become a different genetic being. We don't know how this happened. Uh.... right?
Soy boys
hop on and the thrills kick in, pioneers with big balls
are they bronze heads
@Scootertuner1000 you said it!
No brakes, clutch, throttle. Balls only.
juste woww!!!
And don't Ever lie about my Craftsman ship EVER,
I made that set of bars from your factory ones,
Hand fabricated the Joiner brackets from a set of
my bicycles that I destroyed to save your bike.
Respect do? No..your like we Found it this way!
Do you know how many hours I spent to make then Right?
And the next 2 hours listening, enraptured to his Tails of the Real Deal,
Men pulling 14 inch splinters from thier bodys after Races.
Some less comen but still occuring Race battles, were wepons clubs flails where used,
It changed for ever how I look at a cycle.
Ha ha it's like the early version on isle of Man tt where as you mess up your done for ,them good old boys with there old time toys ,makes you wanna be generations younger , now where's my leather skid lid ha ha
DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@xxxbmxerxxx1 sorry sir i cant buy it now since im only 15 but i always wanted the old motorcycles especially indian. i always wanted the Indian 101 scout thats what im trying to find. Thanks for the offer though.
TRUE STORY !!! :)
It is A Hendee block and double Button, meening,
it has a spot for each lifter, rather than single like the
bumpers, Any how it would be A good Clone,
if you ever Decide to Buy the rest of the parts to
finnish the job. There is a guy on the internet who
sells the reproduction *8 valve* jugs and heads.
(direct bolt on to your cycle,) Too make it a real ,
board track clone. The cable ? Well they never
used that bit, but it was the best could do on you buget.
Drop the bull be real.thanks
so quiet you can't hear it running.
Any how? It's a slick bike, I'm glad you got some air time,
Im realy dissapointed you lied about the bike,You prommised
A young man who worked for free on the project of bringing it
to life that you wouldn't, that it would be for the sake of education,
That it was to honnor the man that left it to you.
信じられないほど美しい
right...
that's crazy
@jonaskey no not really
No brakes. 😳
this is a Fucking Restauration !
@jonaskey
nope...
Look Husqvarna 1000cc 1925
Block is a 1922 hendi hedstrom double button block,
The drum clutch is 1916,the controls , still don't work because your cheap ass, rushed us,
It's not a racer either racers had over head valves.
i want one, and i want to die riding it!
When men were men
I didn’t see gladiators
when I see this it make me wonder how engines have advanced so little in 100 years.
Why? As an example, overhead valves already were in the late 1890's, and later they were used by Franklin in 1902. Modern 4-coil electronic ignition system is inspired by Ford Model T (it has no contact breaker). Starter already was in the 1909 Cadillac, so all electric and steam car makers can't argue with it anymore. Magneto was replaced by separate generator and ignition distributor. 1906 Antoinette V8 was already fuel injected...
The only thing why modern engines become more powerful and reliable is better gas, better oil and better materials.
But it's not nice to lie about your bike.
When Sean and I built it for you from
your grandfauthers stock 1927-28
The one you brought us was in ruff shape,
Exept the engine, Gear box blown, Carb frozen,
Remember I offered to try to re-build it but Sean
and you choose not to, that's why your bike has
no throughtle and a kill switch. The Trany we traded
to My friend for the 1916 Drum clutch unit now on
your bike. Yes your engine is the right block, no,
The bike was never a Real racer.
@FireDropTechnologies what are you babling about?
i was born in the wrong era
Vellosadromes
i created a inexpensive replica kit of this bike, if anyone is interested
First the two stroke but now we are making much stronger for better application
Where do we get info on your replica?
Wrecking Crew
Get some fuel in,and run it occasionally.
Being stood NEVER does any bike any good.
