Good stuff, Jake! We actually just did 'Goodness of God' for the first time at our rehearsal tonight. That song is incredibly good. I think it's the best song on that album, at least it's my personal favorite. Excited to do it on Sunday.
Goodness of God is a ok song but its too simple in terms if chords. A lot of modern music lacks creativity. They all are 2 or 3 chords songs

I don't like the click track. It's distracting. When you're worshipping, you should be worshipping with your heart. It doesn't matter if the congregation is on spot or in tune. As long as they are ingaged. That's what is important for worship leaders, to lead worship. Not orchestra a choir. Honestly watching Ashton she looks board and like she doesn't even want to be there. I get it's practice, but stop working so hard for perfection you loose the reason we lead a worship team. I believe this was one of the points of disengagement your pastor was trying to get across in you "5 things your pastor wants you to stop doing.

The Mix. the snare is sometime missing. especially the chorus session.

Thanks for sharing. As a live sound engineer, it's just my opinion but.... I would suggest, bringing the keys down a pinch, bass guitar up, kick up (need to feel the beat in your chest), snare up a pinch (not much), clear the Guitar up a pinch ... just not hearing your playing clearly.

My church in Philippines is in farflung area, we use Multitracks to synchronize well. I enjoy your team sounds, light to propresenter lyrics. I found some similarity also . Thanks for the transparency and subtitles. hahaha
I think that clicking is a distraction when being on a worship team when you're looking to truly worship... Ifn that makes sense lol why not let the holy spirit lead, rather then them clicks...lol 👍👍👍
You've def never played with in ears and clicks before. It does not distract from the actual worship... if it does, it means either you're not used to it or you're just spiritually lacking. And it shouldn't take more than 1-2 weeks of getting used to it.
And most church don't even let the spirit lead, like you're suggesting. They just sing the songs from order to end like how they always practiced and prepared and end the worship. So in that case, the click being there makes no different. You're thinking of those spont moment in worship where the "spirit leads"... btw they also use clicks during that. Oh the click is just a metronome, it doesn't actually lead anything- it just keeps u on time.
Then there's the "cue" that tells you when you go into the verse and chorus etc. Honestly, it's not rlly necessary but it does rlly help. My band doesn't use click or cues but I sure do wish we do a lot of times. Singers forget where we're going so many times and I have to personally say it out loud. Like when you're in the moment and focused, you tend to forget stuff.
tldr; it doesn't distract. It doesn't mean holy spirit is not leading. Clicks aren't necessary either, but they're nice to have.

Depends on the mentality of the band / team. I'm trying to change this in my church atm. I have changed from saying Practice (which is what the individuals should be doing themselves) and call it rehursle. We play as if people are in the room, playing the small musical parts/ ministry things too. I believe those two words practice/ rehursle mean very different things.
I think I like subtitle Jake more than real jake. Lol jk. (Freedom is one of my favorite worship song)

Huge fan of your videos. Great to see all of the technology and various softwares you reference in your video tutorials being put to use in a real-live rehearsal/Sunday morning situation. It certainly makes mastery and usage of the technology look more attainable when you give us this raw footage of it, and also illustrates the many points you have made about the benefits of Ableton Live. Appreciate you and your ministry, Jake. Praying for the Lord to continue using you to equip worship leaders!
In the spirit of constructive feedback, vocals may want to focus on intonation. Also, harmonies had a tendency to “wander.” Of course, this could be a UA-cam thing... I notice the same things in my church’s uploads. Cheers, and thanks for sharing.

I’m always running into that problem of the MD mic picking up all kinds of noise in the bands’ IEMs. Have you guys figured out a way to try work around that?
Get an optical gate, it only turns the mic on when a face is in front of it.

Oh that last song. Those type of repeating lines over and over and over .............. and over again, drive me and my congregation nuts. It seems like the writer just wants more air time with no substance to the song. I think showing the rehearsal like that was great. You guys do a lot more than my team does. Sometimes they barely sing the whole song. I guess it's because they have been playing the same songs over and over again for years. Trying to get them to expand but it's becoming a loosing battle. Thank you for sharing. Love the kids on stage with you.

Thanks for sharing this rehearsal. I play in a small church's worship band and have enjoyed the fellowship as we play together, but there are times when the stress levels get high as the clock ticks down. I've only been playing for a little over a year but it has helped me grow. Our worship service isn't so elaborate, so I commend you and your team for making it happen. It's also good how you and your wife lead it together. Your kids are hilarious, as most are at that age. I'm impressed that you apparently have to set up and set down each week. Our church used to be that way, so hopefully at some point you will be able to find a place as your own.

Jake, several comments.
1. most lead guitars belong behind something that covers their face. I’m one of 3 lead players at my church and sometimes I am requested to play from the bathroom behind the sanctuary. They say it’s the acoustics in the bathroom, but I play electric...? Trying to figure that one out.
2. Your wife has a beautiful voice, any chance she wants to come sing in Hawaii?
3. Did a google, bing, and Firefox search for “an Ashton”, not as easy to find one for sale as you would think.
Thanks for the transparency, Sunday morning practice is NOT time to learn the song. Your team obviously practiced throughout the week and I assume have a weekly practice; it shows!
Glad to see we aren’t the only ones with technical difficulties, we setup and break down every week too.
So cute when your wife was playing with your baby girl. Your baby did miss a few words, but you have a lot of time to work on that, should be ready by 3.

Not sure the bassist learnt in the week - that first run of song 1, I wouldn't have been able to carry on without running through the chords

Reverb is not a problem when handled right. With reverb your vocalists don’t have to work their voices hard. Experiment during rehearsals

If anything, I would say that this video shows exactly what you want it to - *what these musicians did before Sunday morning makes all the difference*.
They all know the music, cold. (Ok, maybe Jake had to dictate a few chords here and there)
They show up on time, run through the set, make a few tweaks here and there (mostly before "Miracles").
I don't know how you would make a specific 30 minutes of your day/week more "Christ-centered" than the other times. That's where private, quiet, intentional time reading, listening, and talking to God comes into play.
I find it is very distracting when you make all the comments. There is a time for apologies and levity, but it is distracting. Just my 2 cents on this video. Otherwise it sounds wonderful!

Jake I gotta tell you I think it’s really weird that you leave a lead electric guitar in the tracks. I lead a worship ministry with the same number of musicians on the platform and I learn how to play lead guitar and sing at the same time because having a full on electric guitar playing prominent lead parts in the tracks is super awkward! You may think it’s scary but if you use a helix for simplicity and you really practice it’s great! I’ve even done it with song like “Found In You” and “Glorious Day,” if I can do it you can too! I know you can play!!
I agree that's what I had to do for my team. I was kinda forced into it because we just didn't have the people. I learn to play at least the main lines for songs and then switch to rhythm in other sections.

Hey man I really enjoyed the video.....what is the programs you are using...man I wish I knew all this..I'm about to start a worship band. And hopefully have a church evolve from it.
Cool to see behind the scenes. I drum for a church in FL and we also use Ableton to supplement. The drummers run it from the kit. We've yet to go fully automated w/ Ableton cuing lighting/lyrics changes. We still have volunteers handling that. Great sound/visual from such a small crew! Very nice

Tip 2: not sure what it sounds like in house and I’m not sure the capabilities of your mixer is but making sure secondary/harmony singers are more along the lines of blending with the audience. I understand it probably sounds fuller and balanced within itself but it’s more important to have the congregation prominently hear the lead vocalist. If your mixer can change for each song to adjust to who the lead vocalist is that’d be best otherwise training the sound person to raise the following song’s lead vocalist up and once the song starts turn down the previous lead vocalist(s)’ mic. It can be difficult but it’ll help making it sound balanced with the congregation.
Great video with fantastic technology but IMHO vocals are pitchy - possibly due to insufficient reference pitch (keys and or guitar) in the hearback. The vocal line could be added into the guide track. Sorry to be super critical.
Got a kick out of the commentary. This was helpful in seeing your rehearsal in action, so thanks! First song you asked about I think is "ok"..not my favorite. Parts of it seem less congregationally "friendly" for singing.
I like how this mix sounds, only one thing: The drummers mixing is a little bit quiet, I'm not really getting enough snare in the mix, kick toms and cymbals sound good, just the snare is a bit quiet.
Seems like most mixes in most churches just crush anything that is cymbal like in the drum mix. Happens in my church too. You want a good “recording like” mix, but when side by side with the original recordings, the high hats and cymbals are lost. Yet every little guitar nuance and vocal breath is audible. What is with that trend? It really kills the energy of the songs when the drums are so dampened, muted, and cymbals barely audible. And, of course, this is just my opinion. As a musician, I just feel there are more dynamics when you can hear all of the subtleties of each instrument. BTW, I really do love your channel. Good stuff!
I’m listening through some pretty good ear buds, while I like some of the tracks, the mix to my ears is lacking bottom end. I see you have a live bassist but through this mix, I wouldn’t know if I didn’t see him . Perhaps it’s just this mix and not the house mix. Even the keyboards are ‘trebally’.

Tip: main vocals turn down the ratio a little so when she backs away it’ll sound natural. It’ll also help with making the vocals not sound like a brick wall which it currently does.

I don’t know how you guys do down beat every 8 counts with the click. I find it’s easier to get lost counting to 8, then to just 4.

Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. In my opinion, this mix has the same issue that my own church has. I call it the ‘karaoke mix’ where the vocalist is so much louder than the band that it sounds like singing to a backing track instead of being in the mix. My preference is to drop it about 3db so the band’s a more cohesive whole. It’s particularly noticeable with the female vocal because it cuts through so easily. She does have a great voice though. Thanks again. 🙂

I wouldn't put solo parts into backings
Our worship minister uses backings for pads, strings, synthesizer sequence, percussion and to double background vocals.
How much weekly prep time goes into setting up all of your midi queues, set lists, etc in ableton?

I found myself joining you in worship! Its very reassuring to see that you also have all those technical issues before service. If I may add my two cents to your mix: I would add a little highs (or air) to your female lead or switch to a brighter mic for her. Also, on the first song, if you add in some delay effect to her lead, it will add a lot of energy to the song.

1. you should really fix how the click is the mix.
2. Also it gets way too dark between songs, people probably can't even see their hands in front of their faces.
3. Kaylee sounds great though, and is giving rehearsal 100%. Jake must be running at 45% so he can go ham during the service, right?
