  • This mirror is designed to give you more sunlight in the beer garden.
The "Smart Mirror" tracks the sun by using GPS, rotating 270 degrees and reflecting the sun's light through its full arc.
It's currently in its prototype stage and is being trialled at The Sun pub in Clapham, London.

It's not a new idea. It's actually called a heliostat. I had one built by a local handyman about six years ago. Mine is basically a mirror mounted on an axis. It operates by clockwork so that there's a continuous supply of sunshine and heat into a dark room for any number of hours a day without requiring my attention to keep altering its direction. I had my first one built six years ago after researching "how to brighten a dark room" and came across heliostats for the first time. Since then the coldest/darkest room in the house has become one of the warmest and brightest. I also added two to the garden to brighten and heat a darkened corner situated in the shadow of a high wall. When the plants thrived there in the first summer I decided to experiment by growing some exotic palm seeds I purchased cheaply from China and they too have been thriving. I'm in South-west Ireland so it's becoming an intriguing hobby while looking out at my tropical plants on rainy days is an interesting reward. A heliostat is probably one of the least known, but also most reliable, cost effective, and easy-to-make solutions for heat and light shortfalls in the home and garden.

After writing my comment I thought I'd do a YT search on "How to make a heliostat" and found that there are lots of video tutorials on the subject.

Hi.. Sounds great. Was it a dual axis heliostat? I'd be very interested how you managed to get it work via clockwork with all the variables...

I KNEW IT! Sorry, I’m a little excited. I now live in a wooded home, wonderful for hot summers where I live, but the only sunny spot is our deck, and I’m driving my husband crazy with all of the potted plants out there. The front of the house is nearly smack-dab due north, and the sun goes from nearly due east to due west, slightly shifting more to the south as the days grow shorter. So... I’ve wondered if I could use a mirror or mirrors to reflect more sunlight onto that front side. I’m now going to look into this more seriously. Thank you!

@@bliss9745 So many Irish in te comments! :D I'm looking to buy a flat in Dublin. The apartment I was renting in Cork had North-facing and South-facing rooms, and the difference between them in terms of light and temperature was HUGE. So I was planning to buy a South-facing flat, but if Noth-facing ones can be hacked like this, I will not exclude half of the properties.

Hi Bliss - very interested that you built one and how it's improved your cold room. Any advice you can give on how to build your own would be much appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know where a heliostat can be purchased or someone who could build one? There were two Companies: Solenica (that sold the Lucy or CAIA mirror) and Wikoda (that sold the Sunflower), but both seem to be no longer in business).

Heat is due to light, so wherever the light lands on will be heated.

All that just for a tiny bit of sunlight reflection that isn't even that great.

Looks like a convex mirror so a little less concentrated than direct Sun but I'm sure it would still be THE spot to want a table- It's a trial. I just added a flat mirror system for a dark, cool bedroom and it's great for the indoor plants too. I control very manually with a cord from inside during the day ATM. I only discovered after the install that I need to modify to get a 'cam' arrangement on the pivot to keep the reflection onto the bedroom ceiling rather than dropping too low and blinding.

@@QuitRage You can buy heliostats (that's what these are called) but they are very expensive. Much less expensive to make your own. There are many videos on UA-cam showing how to make a heliostat.
