In this video, Bill Vencil demonstrates 2 of his favorite reverb plugins: The AudioDamage Eos and the Valhalla Shimmer. Both reverbs are easy to use, sound amazingly great, and are a valuable tool for any ambient guitar recording.

Even though I don't have Valhalla Shimmer, I have to give it props because it was their article about how Eno and Lanois made shimmer reverb that really inspired my return to ambient music.

Thanks for the post. I have used EOS for years but was looking for another form of pitch shimmer reverb like my TC Alter Ego pedal. Some fellow musicians told me about Valhalla Shimmer and then I found your post. You were very helpful in my decision to purchase the Valhalla Shimmer. I will be visiting your channel often.

Wow, dude, thank you for sharing this. I integrate some ambient sounds in my metal music here and there and have been looking for something like this. I know there are so many reverb plugins and it's tough to decide which one.

They both sound "good": the funny thing is that the same guy (Sean Costello) is behind both reverberation algorithms - of Shimmer and EOS.. I knew about Valhalla DSP, I discovered it for EOS in the User Manual :-)

I love the Valhalla Plugins! Their Shimmer is my favorite. I also have their VintageVerb and it's great! They are priced well too.
I keep looking at the VintageVerb. Would like to add it to the stable...
Wasn't familiar with AudioDamage. Nice ! Valhalla was about the best FREE reverb/Shimmer software I had found.
Another excellent video, Bill! I've got a ton of pedals, too, but I never thought to bypass (pun intended!) them once in a while and just use my Valhalla plugins.... Thanks for the inspiration!

Do you ever play live? I’d love to see you!!! And I have some questions. Playing live (any setting) do you just use the eleven for mostly amp modeling? And how fast of a computer is required to get some huge reverb sounds and loop them. I’m debating going axe fx or helix vs software and computer. I could definitely use some outboard pedals for volume and all fuzz and drive as I build effects for fun (been doing it for like 10 years). I could really enjoy not spending $1500 on an external processor that’s equivalent to a computer from 2001

How do you find the avid rack compares to onboard sims such as NI’s guitar rig etc?
You should give STW Audio's Reflex + a try :D it's very similar to Shimmer in fact the free version alone is already fantastic. Also, where you using a volume pedal to play swells or is the slow attack we hear entirely made by the plugins??
I listened to the demos of the Reflex+ and wow! Great sounds. I just might have to pick that one up. Thanks for the tip! And yes, I was using a volume pedal for the swells.

I've got valhalla and I love it, but there's a small problem with it:
You don't have a pre-delay control, and sometimes when you have size and feedback at a certain ratio, you get a delay of 100-500ms, which can be annoying when you try to play to a click of some sort. I think the size has to be bigger than the feedback or sth like that... (to get no delay)
EDIT: i just discovered, that the size knob is in fact a delay knob. Problem more or less solved ;)
Assuming that you have other reverbs in your DAW software available, I would recommend getting the Valhalla first, for the shimmer effects, then follow on later with the Eos.

I've had Shimmer for ages but only just started playing around with it on Guitar... How are you getting just the sound of the shimmer and no pick of the guitar coming through?! Sounds great!

how do you manage to not hear the guitar note, but just the reverb on Shimmer? even by putting 100% wet I still get the dry signal
Sorry I missed this! I used a Morley volume pedal in parts of the video to chop off the attack of the guitar note.
Have you checked out Zynaptiq ADAPTIVERB? my favorite ambient reverb but very cpu intensive.

are you recording the guitar audio microphone, or do you a straight cord connection, please explain your set up because i have a guitar and Valhalla as well
I am using the Avid Eleven Rack for amp modeling, and then sending the signal direct into Logic Pro. My suggestion for you is to plug your guitar directly into your audio interface, add an amp modeling plug in and then add Valhalla

Hi Bill, I have been looking at a few reverb plugins, and wonder if I may have your opinion to which would best suit Pink Floyd stuff, I hope only to buy one. Would it be the Shimmer? By the way I play a strat.
Hi Al: Does your recording software have "stock" reverb plugins? If so, I would probably suggest the Shimmer for the great sounds you can get out of it. You can then use the standard reverb plugin for room and hall reverbs.
Well I use Logic X and MainStage space designer reverb is cool, however I like the controls on shimmer :) and think I might get this......your demo is great by the way! and thanks for your help.

I presume getting both in your demo would really be good ---- might just do that as when you combined them, really sounds rich. Also there seems to be an EOS 2 now!
I'm curious how you get such a clean input of your guitar and what your signal flow is from the guitar into your interface? Tube preamp? DI box? I have the Radial JDI passive DI box and it's pretty sweet. And I'm always trying to learn more. Thanks so much! Definitely considering the AudioDamage Eos plugin now.
In this video (and most of the videos that involve pedals), I am running my guitar into an Avid Eleven Rack amp modeler. It's a rack mount unit with a digital output that I run into my audio interface (Focusrite Saffire Pro 40). I also run direct into the one the Pro 40's instrument inputs - right on the front panel of the interface. If this is the case, I will use the Logic Pro X Amp Designer plugin to provide the amp modeling tone.

so youre using the avid eleven and the focusrite? I thought the avid functioned as an audio interface?
The Eleven Rack can indeed function as an interface, however I prefer to use it strictly as an amp modeler, as I often record other tracks besides the Avid simultaneously. I take the digital outs from Eleven Rack and run that into the digital inputs of the Focusrite. Works really well.
right on! would you mind giving me a little more detail on how you do that? do you use a xomputer to perform live? i was thinking how cool it would be to be able to use software effects live. maybe even software looping in ableton. thanks so much!
Not sure how to give you more detail in terms of hooking up the 11R. It's super simple - literally just take the digital outputs of the 11R and plug into the digital inputs of the focusrite. They then show up as a stereo pair of inputs (9-10) in Logic.
I am not currently performing live with the electric stuff, however, if I did, I would probably not use a computer. I'd take the audio outs of the 11R and run that into a sound system. I'd keep the effects chain (like I demo in a lot of my vids) as is.
I do have Mainstage 3, which is pretty cool, and I would consider using it if I were going to perform live with a computer.

goldenmonkeycolor Ah. My Focusrite has 8 mic pres, so I can record drums, bass and guitar at the same time. Can't do that on the 11R, which is why I don't use it as an audio interface.
The Timeline can indeed do a patterned delay, but the DIG is dedicated to that function and has some options that the Timeline does not have.

Not your playing, but the computer interface. If you do a perfect 5th, it needs to be a "5" or fifth. For and octave, say octave, not anything else. This is why, as a nerd that I am, my computer has never come into the mix of my music.
New Song Guitar Collaboration the 7 is a 5th in semi tones, not scale degrees.
