    I really appreciate that you didn't speed up the video or skip to the end. It's nice to be able to see the entire process unlike a lot of other videos! Let's us have more time to learn and take it in! :)

      You're welcome Debbie! That particular Boxwood has 'starred' in several of my videos but this is one of the few when it was shaped with hand shears.

    A very helpful video that uses shears rather than electric trimmers and a reminder to use tarps to cover the ground underneath. Thanks Bob

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  8 років тому

      The only issue with using tarps is your feet can tend to get tangled up in them sometimes, but we felt they were a 'must' when trimming over decorative stone mulches and some wood mulch landscapes where we weren't re-mulching right away. Thanks for watching the Bobscaping channel!

    I've never used shears to cut a bush before, but this is really helpful to learn for bushes or tree's like arbivitous, plus comes in handy if the trimmer runs out of gas or battery, plus the way you take off the clippings is awesome to, I usually take them off once by one gently, not anymore since watching this video, total time saver!!

    • @bobscaping

      We had some clients who preferred their shrubs be trimmed "naturally" (no shearing) but the downside seemed to be that they always got too large much faster. Plus the extra time spent natural trimming added to their bill.

      It seems to love where it's planted, in a relatively confined space away from harsh winds where it gets midday sun. It's "twin" that's planted in a more exposed location next to a garden shed, with southern exposure, has declined a bit over the past year.

      Keeping the shears sharp and properly adjusted is the key to clean cuts. One nurseryman I knew used WD40 to clean and lubricate the blades since green residue tends to build up and restrict blade movement. Thanks for watching Bobscaping!

      Thank you! Between an electric Dremel tool and small handheld knife sharpening stone, those shears are kept very sharp. Years ago an old-timer gave me some good advice: Trim shrubs in the cool of the morning when the foliage is more turgid, instead of during the heat of the day, for a much cleaner cut. Not sure I followed his advice in this particular video, but good advice all the same, even though morning trimming often raises clouds of those pesky gnats! I often wore Avon Skin-so-Soft (amzn.to/2H41FBZ) to help repel them.

      To be honest bob I am struggling to re shape a Privet tree lollipop about 85cms ball that been neglected for a long time and now after re potting and feeding treatment as been recovered but branches over grown . I think need to use a steps if need to start from top any advice will be highly appreciated. Jessy X

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  7 років тому

      I'm guessing you had to cut some thicker branches back, so the next step would be the ongoing shaping of "the lollipop" as new growth emerges and matures. I like to start trimming at the top of a plant and then work down the sides, but your style may vary.

    Thanks Bobscape! People told me to NOT use electric sheers on my boxwood. After this video, I'll turn off my ears.

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  7 років тому +1

      If your electric shears are sharp and properly adjusted they should cut just as cleanly as hand shears that are sharp and properly adjusted. Some people may not realize that both of these types of shears need to be sharpened and kept in proper adjustment so they cut cleanly instead of tearing foliage.
      And how many people have ever sharpened their digging shovels as I demonstrated in a video posted a couple weeks ago...

    Great video any tips on promoting growth while keeping shrubs clean looking?

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  6 років тому

      I guess you mean a way to fertilize them without them pushing out new growth? With Yews (Taxus) we used to wait until mid-summer to trim them since they rarely put on new growth after that, of course they could look pretty unkempt for a couple months preceding that.

  • @1mattadams
    @1mattadams 8 років тому +1

    Lotta extra work but somehow it looks better than gas trimmer.

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  8 років тому

      I knew some "purists" over the years who swore by hand shears but my final analysis would be that hand shears and power shears will produce an equal level of quality if they are kept sharp and properly adjusted.

    Bob, I have some kobold barberry that have become overgrown and woody. Can you recommend an approach and time of year to start working them? I hate to see the bright yellow wood exposed from large cuts but I may have to live with that in order to trim these back and try to give them some shape. Thanks.

    • @bobscaping
      @bobscaping  4 роки тому +1

      According to the Missouri Botanical Garden (great source for plant information) the 'Kobold' Barberry "typically matures to 5-feet tall and as wide."
      My landscaping experience indicated that all heavy pruning, where shrubs are to be greatly reduced in size, is best done in early-Spring, just as new growth is about to emerge.
