Mozart´s indication in the score: Allegro 'maestoso', [majestic], requires in music more the character of dignity, majesty, and pride, IMO. The describtion tends more to the slower movement of Presto, Allegro, Andante or Adagio.

I love a lot this man. I consider him my musical father, a sensitive father who has gifted me my best moments in music. And like a child proud of his father, I love him and admire him, and everything he does seems to me nobody does it better. Maestro Gilels, makes me discover yet new horizons with this dramatic piece, written around the time Mama Mozart died. I like the small arpeggios he plays... breaks the chord like guitarist here and there. He emphasizes the counterpoints with clear sonority. This is full of life... at least for me...
One of the very best interpretations of this sonata which I have known and loved for more than 50 years- truly wonderful the way Emil Gilels brings out the inherent beauty. And I loved the repeats in the first movement. Thank you so much for this post.

I have listened various version. I know little of Gilels - I don't know as much about him as I do with other legendary performers like Horowitz or Richter. But he is the best in this piece. I never imagined descending like 21:28~21:40.
Always an outstanding in any media of playing not only beautiful accurate playing but so expressive, with clarity so flawless in his passages technically fantastic.

What's so brilliant about Gilels' play? I don't get it! For me Christoph Eschenbach is "standard" for all Mozart piano sonatas! This isn't any better at all! Listen to Dinu Lipatti (last recital) then you can hear how this sonata CAN be played! xD

I'm a big fan of Lipatti but this powerful, Beethovenian interpretation holds its own next to pretty much every other recording. Gilels's pianism and mastery of tone is one of the wonders of this world.
I often prefer an "incorrect" interpretation from one of the great masters to a correct one from a solid and historically informed performer like Eschenbach. But de gustibus non est disputandum etc
I don't know what's "wrong" with Eschenbach playing Mozart? For my taste this is "standard". All other pianists have to be judged by Eschenbach's recordings! :D IMHO, there are two outstanding Mozart performances Lipatti K.310 and Zimerman K.311!.
Thank you for giving this masterwork a reasonably hifi bitrate. I truly do not understand how anyone who cares about music can upload any serious classical work in anything less. Wish every uploader had the same respect for the music, for the performers, and for us listeners. Cheers

Da gibt es einen lebenden Pianisten, dessen Klavierspiel, mich stark an Gilels erinnert: Igor Levit haucht die langsamen Sätze einer Beethovensonate mit ähnlicher Sensibilität und Phrasierungskunst wie Emil Giles dieses Andante.
Hab' Emil Gilels jetz vielmals gehört und gesehen. Auch er macht das Klavier singend ! Und seine Scarlatti 7 Sonaten ist wie 'de weg naar de Sterren'.Gabe es denn damals zwei Zeus(en) vielleicht ? : -)
Wat betreft dit Concert van Mozart en daarvan het Andante Cantabile 15.50 - 16.51: het is een opvallend lange reeks van aaneengesloten Dissonanten. Mozart gebruikte vaak dissonanten in zijn composities. (dense and dissonant chords) Wikipedia : 'Mysterious Mozart' . Dissonanten zijn boeiend, en mooi en goed bruikbaar, maar zijn ook 'wringend' en 'schrijnend'. In dit Concert van Mozart en zo goed geprofileerd in het spel van Eric Gilels einfach grausam.
In a way I know what you mean, but this is 'maestoso' alla Mozart. Listen to the Durchführung [3:23 ff] Gilels pushes the boundaries what is possible to produce without breaking the stylistic elements. You have to play maestoso on a certain level which belongs to the epoch and the composer´s style,IMO.
Have you ever listened to the last recital of Dinu Lipatti? It doesn't get any better than this! So for my taste this Gilels recording is nothing special! I even like Christoph Eschenbach (Gesamtaufnahme DGG) better! :D
You may well be right (though we can never really know), but there is a telecast (March1964) by Arrau which, whilst not particularly fast, seems to me to get closer to the troubled heart of the first movement. However for all I know Mozart might have hated it!!
Yes, but I don't think this music sounds 'majesic' however it is played. For me the clue to its character lies more in the use of a minor key - quite rare in Mozart and usually an indicator of darker dramas - and in the piano writing, with its often propulsive energy.
Op ongeveer de helft van het stuk 16.10 _ 17.03 barst Mozart onverwacht heftig los, daarvoor en daarna is niets wat daar op lijkt, het lijkt los te staan van al het andere.Het komt op mij over als een mengsel van woede en verdriet. Als je goed luistert is het gruwelijk en bijna onverdragelijk. Om te horen hoe anderen met dit intermezzo omgingen heb ik gekeken bij o.a. Ich verrstehe (offensichtlich) das "Glanzlicht" nicht (reimt sich sogar)! Die Sonate KV 310 habe ich schon besser gehört: In erster Linie vom unvergleichlichen Dinu Lipatti ("Last recital 1950 und Studioaufnahme)! Auch Christoph Eschenbachs Gesamteinspielung (DGG) finde ich persönlich ansprechender! :D
Pianistisch ist diese Darstellung in der Tat ein Glanzlicht. Wer kann die Klarheit der Passagen, den wunderbar warmen Klavierton, die allgemeine Beherrschtheit des Technischen, im Gleichgewicht mit dem musikalischen Ausdruck, so wunderbar auf dem Tablett servieren wie Emil Gilels..niemand wahrscheinlich, in solch einer ausgewogenen Harmonie. Was das Stilistische, das rein Musikalische, wie zum Beispiel das Tempo oder den Ausdruck für Mozart angeht, so kann man sicherlich kritische Ansatzpunkte finden und geteilter Meinung sein. Lili Kraus, Ingrid Haebler oder Alfred Brendel würden das sicher vollkommen anders spielen, aber sie sind ja auch keine Russen, das spielt eine große Rolle. Selbst Richter, der ja deutsches Blut in seinen Adern hatte, kam nicht mit Mozart zurecht. Aber wer kommt das schon?
Ich habe beschrieben, wer mit Mozart, muM nach, zurecht kam: Dinu Lipatti (unvergleichlich - selbst pianistisch - da kann kein Emil Gilels mithalten) oder auch Christoph Eschenbach (mit seiner Gesamteinspielung)! Ich höre bei Emil Gilels KEINE Klarheit der Passagen, die Sie hier hochloben. Hören Sie sich mal die Aufnahme von K.311 mit Krystian Zimerman an (leider von einer LP mit Knackgeräuschen)! Trotzdem sind dort die Passagen weit klarer! Auch technisch ist Zimerman muM Gilels "weit voraus" (wenn man das auf diesem Niveau überhaupt sagen kann)! Bei Gilels Ton kann ich auch keine Besonderheit (wie bei Artur Rubinstein oder Krystian Zimerman) erkennen. Also bleibe ich weiterhin völlig unbeeindruckt von dieser Aufnahme! So unterschiedlich sind eben Geschmäcker und (pianistische) Auffassungen! xD Bei der überschaubaren Klickzahl (bei Eschenbach) liegt die Annahme nahe, dass längst nicht alle sich diese hervorragende Interpretation angehört haben. :D P.S.: Neben den von Ihnen erwähnten Pianisten können auch noch Friedrich Gulda oder die Mozart-Spezialistin Mitsuko Uschida erwähnt werden (ganz zu schweigen von Clara Haskil). Also SO aussergewöhnlich, wie Sie Emil Gilels beschreiben, war er gar nicht. Ausserdem, was hat das mit "russischem Blut" zu tun? Da müssten ja speziell deutsch-österreichische Pianisten die besten Mozart-Interpreten sein! Dem ist aber offensichtlich nicht so ... *schmunzel*
Ik vind deze 'mannelijke' versie van Gilels Mozart veel meer te prefereren dan de oh zo 'zoetsappige' interpretaties van vele andere bekende pianisten.

Op ongeveer de helft van het stuk 16.10 _ 17.03 barst Mozart onverwacht heftig los, daarvoor en daarna is niets wat daar op lijkt, het lijkt los te staan van al het andere.Het komt op mij over als een mengsel van woede en verdriet. Als je goed luistert is het gruwelijk en bijna onverdragelijk. Om te horen hoe anderen met dit intermezzo omgingen heb ik gekeken bij o.a. Arrau, Peres en Richter en naar mijn mening heeft hij het best begrepen wat er in Mozart omging toen hij dit gedeelte schreef. Richter ( 4.42 _ 5.40 ) in 2 van 2

Ik hoorde zijn spel hiermee voor het eerst en vind hem erg goed maar ik bleef bij zijn Mozart steken bij deze 'heftige passage' en schrok daar erg van. Ik werd meteen in de eerste les gestort ! De les van 'rustig over je heen laten komen' . Aan het oefenen in 'niet altijd alles alleen maar vergelijken met SR' was ik blijkbaar nog niet begonnen. Hij woont n.l. nog steeds onder mijn huid. Bij Gilels was het dat ik schrok en bij de uitvoering door de andere Pianisten niet. Dat is mMn een compliment voor zijn spel ! Ik ga meer aandacht aan hem schenken.Ik ben blij met je reactie my dear B. ! : - ))

Ik kan dit gedeelte nog steeds niet verdragen vanwege de vele diepe 'Kummer' die er aan vooraf gaat en ik vlucht a.h.w. naar Richter die dit te lijf gaat met 'fürchterlicher Wut' en dat helpt mij. Ik weet dat alle muziekbeleving door de hoorder, grotendeels de eigen interpretatie is, maar toch.........

Hab" SR für einege Zeit auf non-aktiv gestellt und lese und höre jetzst Emil Gilels. Du hast ganz recht, Er ist es alleszins wert und ich wondere mich sehr. Höre jetzt Scarlatti 7 Sonatas 1984 ! . womit ich besser zurecht komme als/dann mit z.b. das Impressionnismus in Musik wo deine Bilder mir besser gefallen ( sie sind sehr schön und immer geweldig goed chosen) als die Musik die ich nicht immer gut findet. Except sogar bij Michelangeli , da wieder doch sehr gut durch ihm gespielt und bin durüber erstaunt. ! Alles ändert sich immer und so auch bisweilen meine Meinungen , Ich wünsche Dir eine sehr guten Tag Herr Benlinzerberus.! : = ))
I'm sure I've seen this before on your channel (??) Wonderfully refined, lucid and sensitive playing, though I do prefer more sense of urgency in the first movement. (I think I might have written that before too?!)

Ich verrstehe (offensichtlich) das "Glanzlicht" nicht (reimt sich sogar)!
Die Sonate KV 310 habe ich schon besser gehört: In erster Linie vom unvergleichlichen Dinu Lipatti ("Last recital 1950 und Studioaufnahme)!
Auch Christoph Eschenbachs Gesamteinspielung (DGG) finde ich persönlich ansprechender! :D
Pianistisch ist diese Darstellung in der Tat ein Glanzlicht. Wer kann die Klarheit der Passagen, den wunderbar warmen Klavierton, die allgemeine Beherrschtheit des Technischen, im Gleichgewicht mit dem musikalischen Ausdruck, so wunderbar auf dem Tablett servieren wie Emil Gilels..niemand wahrscheinlich, in solch einer ausgewogenen Harmonie. Was das Stilistische, das rein Musikalische, wie zum Beispiel das Tempo oder den Ausdruck für Mozart angeht, so kann man sicherlich kritische Ansatzpunkte finden und geteilter Meinung sein. Lili Kraus, Ingrid Haebler oder Alfred Brendel würden das sicher vollkommen anders spielen, aber sie sind ja auch keine Russen, das spielt eine große Rolle. Selbst Richter, der ja deutsches Blut in seinen Adern hatte, kam nicht mit Mozart zurecht. Aber wer kommt das schon?
Ich habe beschrieben, wer mit Mozart, muM nach, zurecht kam: Dinu Lipatti (unvergleichlich - selbst pianistisch - da kann kein Emil Gilels mithalten) oder auch Christoph Eschenbach (mit seiner Gesamteinspielung)!
Ich höre bei Emil Gilels KEINE Klarheit der Passagen, die Sie hier hochloben. Hören Sie sich mal die Aufnahme von K.311 mit Krystian Zimerman an (leider von einer LP mit Knackgeräuschen)! Trotzdem sind dort die Passagen weit klarer! Auch technisch ist Zimerman muM Gilels "weit voraus" (wenn man das auf diesem Niveau überhaupt sagen kann)!
Bei Gilels Ton kann ich auch keine Besonderheit (wie bei Artur Rubinstein oder Krystian Zimerman) erkennen. Also bleibe ich weiterhin völlig unbeeindruckt von dieser Aufnahme!
So unterschiedlich sind eben Geschmäcker und (pianistische) Auffassungen! xD
Bei der überschaubaren Klickzahl (bei Eschenbach) liegt die Annahme nahe, dass längst nicht alle sich diese hervorragende Interpretation angehört haben. :D
P.S.: Neben den von Ihnen erwähnten Pianisten können auch noch Friedrich Gulda oder die Mozart-Spezialistin Mitsuko Uschida erwähnt werden (ganz zu schweigen von Clara Haskil). Also SO aussergewöhnlich, wie Sie Emil Gilels beschreiben, war er gar nicht. Ausserdem, was hat das mit "russischem Blut" zu tun? Da müssten ja speziell deutsch-österreichische Pianisten die besten Mozart-Interpreten sein! Dem ist aber offensichtlich nicht so ... *schmunzel*
Ik vind deze 'mannelijke' versie van Gilels Mozart veel meer te prefereren dan de oh zo 'zoetsappige' interpretaties van vele andere bekende pianisten.
