    Hello, I part owned GBMIV for many years. I wrote the SOPs for our group. I have flown my family to various places in it - long trips like the South of France and to very short fields like the narrow 450m Oxenhope at 1100amsl near Howarth in Yorkshire. I could share a lot of history about this aircraft with you. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. John

    Ah that brings back memories for me. I had an Arrow 1 some years back and really loved it. Never got to try a turbo version though.
    The auto-gear extension never really works on these old aeroplanes so you’ll find it disabled and nearly all of them (like mine). After a while you’ll be disabling that flashing warning light! It’’ drive you crazy otherwise.
    You flew past my home airfield at Hinton. If you want to practise your short landings, this is the place. If you are worried about the parachute jumping, they don’t operate on Mondays.
    Enjoy your new machine and happy landings.

    How exciting, a new aircraft. It makes all the difference when it’s your own. The flashing amber light is a distraction and may make you miss other warning lights…take the bulb out or inhibit the system. Power settings - I have a laminated card just above the throttle quadrant…very useful. Undercarriage- I keep my hand on the lever until I see all greens, and then say it. My final approach call at a 1000’ is “reds, blues, three greens” followed by my intention and clearance. Like you I’ve forgotten to put it up on the go around but never forgotten to lower it. Happy flying John

    You're going to love it. I've owned an T-Arrow IV since 2007. Be careful with the engine management, they're easy to toast. I've found it to cruise very nicely at 65% power at 15000ft giving 155 kts so go buy an O2 bottle ;-) Just recently flew from KSAF to KBFI in a day a couple of weeks ago so very easy to cover large distances.

    Hello Jon, great video as always and nice new aircraft, congratulations.
    Not quite sure but from the cockpit footage I didn't see if an engine data monitor is fitted? These are one of the best value after market upgrades you can put on a piston engine aircraft, particularly a complex single or twin. To be able to accurately monitor individual Exhaust Gas Temperatures, and more importantly Cylinder Head Temperatures, is really important. Not to mention other engine parameters such as Turbo Inlet Temperature, oil, fuel, OAT, electrics etc is a real advantage, in comparison to the little single (historically inaccurate) gauges that Piper, Cessna and co give us. For the outlay in cost of something like the JPI Engine Data Monitor 800 or 900 series, you have the ability to save thousands of pounds in keeping track of your engine's health.
    It also allows accurate leaning, whether you choose to operate rich or lean of peak. You can pre-programme alarms to trigger at certain temperature or manifold pressure limits, helping you keep cylinder head temperatures and that turbo boost under control. Should you wish, you can plug in a USB and download the data for each and every one of your flights. Then with easily accessible online software you can assess how healthy your engine is, and importantly how you are operating it.
    If you don't follow him already, check out Mike Busch and Savvy Aviation (UA-cam and Podcasts). He offers a really enlightening view of how we treat, and how we should treat our light aircraft. As a fellow owner with limited knowledge on these matters, I find his content really helpful.
    Best wishes for lots of fun trips and adventures....! 🙂

    Another great one to distract me from everything else I should be doing! My flight into Redhill was, as expected, extremely challenging being a student but I learnt a lot and had a lot of fun. Let's hope for anything other than 36 next time!

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  2 роки тому +1

      Remember, it's your instructor's job to make it all make sense. Runway 36 is difficult, even for a seasoned private pilot.

    • @zackaplowitz
      @zackaplowitz 2 роки тому

      @@TheFlyingReporter They were there primarily to keep us safe - we thoroughly briefed it and I really enjoy the challenge. I flew much tighter than needed, probably giving about a 0.1 mile final instead of the ideal 0.3 or so. I completely forgot before landing checks (instructor did them in his head to make sure all was safe), and I landed with flap 20, instead of 30 as planned. Not ideal in GNWFT, which is notorious for its love of floating. The way I see it, you can plan all you want, but there's no better way to combat that loss of situational awareness than actually experiencing and debriefing it!

    Congrats on the new aircraft. Hope you didn't have to wait for ages to order/get food (my experience recently at Kemble). Interestingly I too had to go around in almost identical circumstances - There appeared to be pilots flying ENORMOUS circuits (they never would have made the field in the event of an engine failure), but no harm no foul. ATC there is great and it's a nice place to visit. Looking forward to your visit to Popham.

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  2 роки тому

      It's busy there at Kemble. we didn't have to wait too long for food. The aircraft ahead was previously doing circuits, so I was a little tighter than normal. On final, declared they were landing, so the spacing wasn't adequate.

    Congrats Jon-super wings! U won’t be huffing and puffing in the climbs with the TC engine 😂😂😂. One thing that Piper TC POH omits (despite FAA protestations) is that should an engine start running rough or quits when flying at higher altitudes it may be due to a failed TC -in such a situation the engine is being choked by the excess fuel rate relative to the rarified atmosphere. Hence, the pilot should try LEANING the mixture to correct. Currently the POH for TC models specifies full rich (as one would do with a normally aspirated engine) but that would only exacerbate the situation should the cause be a TC failure.

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  2 роки тому

      Thanks. The POH procedure for suspected turbo failure does spell that out, and it is in the emergency checklist...hoping to never have to face that problem though.

    How exciting to have a new aeroplane!
    I have no experience with turbos but presumably it must feel very odd not to be able to give it full power on takeoff or go around.
    Perhaps this is to do with the lack of a ‘waste gate’ on older turbo machines (?) to prevent them over boosting.

      Thanks David. You get used to it. Yes, you can overboost it if you apply full throttle. It has a fixed wastegate. Typically, 2/3rds throttle is about what you need.

    Excellent Jon! Very pleased for you. If you can fly further, how about hopping the Atlantic for a collab? Haha
