Here are some additional mistakes/observations: (I'll preface this by saying some security camera and NVR companies make getting some of the specifications VERY hard to obtain. Some won't provide these details at all) NVR=Network Video Recorder WiFi Cameras and systems: WiFi can be jammed, especially in industrial spying/sabotage or high-end neighborhoods there is a lot of incentive for thieves to invest in radio jamming equipment. It is not so expensive that some thief that is looking at a high payoff won't use it. SOME NVRs have a feature that outputs an alarm signal if the video input is interrupted by either device failure or jamming of this type. Camera REAL Resolution: In general (see focal length below), I suggest using 5MP MINIMUM cameras. However, as Nelly's guy said, make sure your NVR (network video recorder) can use the higher resolution cameras. This information is usually buried deep in the user manual or a separate data page on the vendor's website. Cheap NVRs in particular may only support 2MP cameras. Note: the higher the camera MP rating, the more storage it will consume in both non-compressed and compressed formats. A 5MP camera will consume considerably more storage space than a 2MP camera. Sunlight and Time Of Day: Orient the cameras so sunlight cannot directly impinge on the camera lens AT ALL TIMES OF DAY. Keep Daylight Savings Time in mind as well. In most locations on the planet, the position/angle of the sun in the sky changes during the year. It can change a lot...especially as you get farther from the equator, and may be another factor to keep in mind when installing a camera. A camera can be PERMANENTLY damaged if sunlight "hits" the sensor. It will of course also totally blot out your image from that camera. Artificial Lighting and Time Of Day and Motion Detection Floodlights When positioning your cameras, be sure to take into account lights that may turn on at certain times of day. Everything may seem OK when you first setup your camera, but then at night your camera may be overloaded by a streetlight or other light that turns on at night or when clouds/weather gets really dark. A similar consideration exists for car headlights. You may see no problem during the day but headlights may cause major problems at night. This would be especially true when the camera is watching a gate, driveway, or parking lot. Similarly, if your area of observation has *motion activated floodlights* they can also "swamp" the camera sensor and make any images unusable while the light is on. 1080HD/1080p Camera CLAIMS: Keep in mind that just because a camera CLAIMS "1080HD" or "1080p" output, it doesn't actually mean the camera actually provides that level of resolution. All it means is that the output has been modified to make it compatible with 1080HD/1080p displays. The image from a 2MP camera is closer to 480p actual resolution. Only the output has been modified. There is no added detail when you simply modify an image to go from 480p to 1080p. You just get a larger format but still fuzzy image. Focal Length: Understand and choose the correct camera lens FOCAL LENGTH for your needs. For example, the typical wide-angle surveillance 2.8mm focal length camera gives you a wider field of view, but if you need to observe only a small area but at a greater distance away, you may want to consider a 6mm focal length lens. Or, you may want to install both at a given location. This can be critical when your camera does not offer OPTICAL zoom. It should be noted that a narrow-angle 6mm 2MP camera can provide BETTER detail than a wide-angle 2.8mm 5MP camera at a far distance, so that can affect your decision. Remember also that 2MP camera requires less storage than a 5MP camera. This video explains it very well and provides examples under various conditions: ua-cam.com/video/e2e05usL3Sg/v-deo.html IR floodlights, 850nm: If you're going to buy IR floodlights, the almost universal wavelength of IR light used in surveillance cameras is 850nm. The other commonly sold IR light on the internet is 930nm...however it probably will NOT work in a typical surveillance system. Be sure to match the wavelength of the external IR light to your camera's IR LEDs. Optical vs. Digital Zoom: If you are going to DEPEND on zoom capabilities, I strongly suggest buying a camera that offers OPTICAL zoom. As the Nelly's guy said, digital zoom only magnifies, it does not provide more data/detail. OPTICAL zoom however, provides more data and more detail. An alternative as I said above, is using a camera with a longer focal length than the typical 2.8mm camera. Data Compression: In general, the higher the degree of compression, the more details are lost. H.264 and H.265 compressions are NOT lossless compression. A given camera and/or NVR may or may not offer a lossless compression data mode. WiFi cameras may compress the data because it results in faster network transmission and lower network bandwidth. NVRs generally offer compression to reduce the amount of storage it takes to save X hours of camera video in a given format. If you need absolutely the best video detail then lossless compression or no compression are options to look into. I'm unsure if there are any WiFi cameras that offer uncompressed data streams so in such cases you might want to consider wired camera installations. Keep in mind however, that analog camera signals degrade for every foot of cable so may only be suitable for a fairly short-range installation, and for maximum image clarity, analog cables need to be replaced after as little as 5 years in service (depends on environmental factors). Consult your security system vendor and get these kinds of details in writing. Some vendors will verbally assure you about anything you ask to make a sale. ONVIF compatibility (WiFi only): ONVIF is a surveillance camera and system standard that helps ensure that a WiFi camera you buy is compatible with your NVR. There are both ONVIF Versions and Profiles that you may need to meet to ensure full compatibility. However, I've been unable to obtain ONVIF information from some vendors, so you may have to buy and try to determine compability. In such cases, I suggest buying from a website/vendor that will accept "returns for any reason", preferably with no return shipping or "restocking" charges. For more info on ONVIF, just search the internet.
You’ve earned a new customer, I’ve had my truck broken into 2x in past year..I currently have Nest cameras that are very close to my WiFi router and still have connectivity issues on top of not great zooming...can see an image of a person but not enough to catch them..I want the best cameras I can get but also I’m not a tech guy..I’d like to use my phone if possible but definitely want wired cameras...I’ll be calling tomorrow..

I'm brand new to the whole home security system idea, and in less then one week I've gone from thinking of buying the "simply easy (and safe)" wireless battery only system, to rushing out to my local warehouse club to buy a wireless battery system I could also run on constant power, to now a more thorough investigation of a PoE system. You're 9 points were spot on! And, I have a bonus mistake you could add to your list. "Taking advice from the wrong people - like your buddy who did zero research before buying his system."

Almost every home and about 1 out of 4 businesses I walk into have the DVR box sitting in plain view. Thieves around here have quickly learned to just cut the cables from the box and take it, and therefore any evidence, with them. I usually place a cheap or old junker box in plain view with a bunch of dead cables coming to it. The real box usually goes inside a large firesafe. Cooling has not been an issue, the UPS power backup box and the DVR make just enough heat to keep moisture out of the safes. Thanks for your video, it had some great information in it.
@@jovetj how does it sound fishy? I keep my DVR in a fire safe as well. Trust me it can be done rather easily. A good high speed steel bit is all you need.
I noticed one that is missing here, when using IR cameras, you can extend their range at night with IR flood lights. Be sure to position them out of view of the cameras though. My cameras have around a 30' range with the built in LEDs, with my IR flood lights, they pick up details at close to 200'. Another thing with IR cameras, don't use CFL bulbs in the field of view, they make the cameras useless.
A purchase caution. Be sure to get the IR floodlight with the same wavelength output as used in your camera(s). Some sellers try to con people into buying their 940nm IR floodlight by highlighting it's IR LEDs are "invisible" or "less visible" to human eyes (you don't see the deep red glow of typical surveillance camera IR LEDs) compared to the typical 850nm IR LEDs...but these 940nm IR floodlights won't work with the typically 850nm IR LED cameras. Sometimes the sellers don't even specify the wavelength of their product and customers won't understand there is a difference in IR LED lighting...or they will put the info in really small letters in some obscure place and then claim you can't return it because it was YOUR error to buy the wrong light. Even worse, I've seen sellers spec their light as 850nm in one place, and 940nm in another, adding to the problem. Note: to be more stealthy, SOME systems do use 940nm LEDs for illumination, but most consumer-grade cameras use 850nm IR LEDs.
Amazing Demo on mistakes I've accepted my Swann bright white glare in day time and as I just learned ir flooding nightmare. I've made poor choices in life and spending big money after being robbed not just by criminals but by Swann. Dummy camera would have done better when I can't see. Makes me wanna cry we need more companies like you willing to help covering any mistakes with the world. you know money doesn't grow on trees to pay for a tech.

We used an outdoor camera indoors, pointing outdoors through a window. The IR glare was ridiculous... We had to completely disable the IR lights. they weren't needed thanks to the area being completely lit. Black electrical tape over the IR LED lights can work in a pinch but it's frustrating if you leave any leaks.
Actually, higher resolution CAN be achieved via computer processing, but it requires multiple frames of an image to do so. You can't just grab a screen-shot and enhance it via this process. It takes multiple images of the same object and via software combines them and may be able to produce a composite image that strips out much of the noise while at the same time introducing pixels from all the images and mapping them into a new image that produces more detail. For one SIMPLISTIC example, one part of the eyes may be obscured or "out of focus" in one frame (but the rest of the face is decent), but the eyes are "in focus" in another frame. So the software removes the out of focus section from the first frame and replaces that section only with the in focus section from the second frame...thus producing an image with superior resolution overall. Also, the data compression used by a camera and/or system may produce less than optimal resolution of the eyes in one frame, but when it compresses the data for the next frame the eyes were compressed with more information. The results of compression can vary due to lighting, distance, motion, etc. Dealing with compression artifacts can be quite difficult. However, this kind of software is as far as I know, still all proprietary, and mostly available and used by government agencies or vendors who specialize in image enhancement. I've not seen any software package that a typical consumer would use (or would want to pay high dollars for) that would provide enhancement in this manner. Similar techniques are used in producing higher resolution images from optical telescopes. Of course, it also helps a LOT if your data are not compressed at all. However this requires a LOT more data storage and most consumers would balk at either the higher cost or the decreased amount of video stored before the "old" data are overridden. Note: I don't recommend any camera with less than 5MP of sensor resolution. Even if a camera is advertised as "1080HD" or similar, a 2MP camera is NOT actually capable of providing true 1080p information. It could be 480p (or even lower). The system may DISPLAY 1080p on the HDMI output, however the 480p image has simply been "stretched" to meet the 1080p format of the display. No "HD" information actually exists.
Also not true. Visual machine learning is a thing. Plenty of AI software can blow up an image AND fill in details where there were none. Some of these features can be found in smartphones and can be applied to the images taken - only a matter of time before security cameras build this in.
Yep. Been messing with cans since 2009. I have made so many mistakes that I now do installs on the side and I have multiple examples around my house/property for customers to compare in real life before buying. Have had a lot of signal issues caused by weather or spiders at my full time job.
Here is the one you missed: aiming outdoor cameras at the east /west horizon where the sun sets/rises. Near time, the sun blocks out the view and changes the exact area due to the seasons. SE to NE and SW to NW winter to summer. Keep the angle low; no sky view.
Pretty good tips overall. #3 about wifi cameras has a lot of truth to it, but if you have a large enough property and multiple wifi access points, you can totally make this work. I have most of my cameras hardwired, but I'm still able to get two 3MP cameras on a single dedicated AP with no issues at all. 24/7 recording.
My favorite type of advertisement -- provide some value to the viewer in return for watching. I watched the video looking for information on setting up a system I've already purchased for home. Making the video wasn't a waste though. I'll be replacing the system at my business soon and I'll certainly give Nelly a call.
9:30 ... also to add if pointed too high, when there's no clouds and the sun is shining bright it blocks out some viewing angles. Had this issue with two of my cameras I couldn't make-out images that were further away when the sun was bright on the lower horizon. Had to adjust to compensate for the sun during late hours of the afternoon.
Great video, when I installed one of my cameras the white drain pipe would white out the image during the dark hours, I over came this by spraying the section of pipe black.
I am somewhat conflicted regarding exposed cameras as a deterrent, as opposed to concealed cameras to obtain video without letting the intruder know. Have you ever experienced a client's DVR being sought out and stolen/destroyed during an intrusion? Do you offer DVRs that incrementally upload to a secure remote storage server? Here is number 7: Installing cameras which are too high or otherwise impossible to access and maintain. Spiders just love building webs on outdoor CCTV cameras so you need to be able to get to them to clear the spider webs off, sometimes daily, with a suitable long brush or similar.
Oh yeah, that was one mistake I made too. Good one!!! I would use a 10 foot ladder and still couldn't reach the dang camera very well. Won't do that again.

They missed a very important mistake.Time and date on the recorded images has to be accurate.If it isn't correct it will be useless If required as evidence in a court of law.
If a case depends on the surveillance timestamp, then prosecutor will have to "prove" it's reliable. Since most can be set by anyone with access to the system, that can be a challenge. Usually the best you get is testimony from the owner/operator that they set the time correctly and used a reliable source (like a cellphone carrier's timestamp or US time standard broadcast from Fort Collins, Colorado) to do so, AND that they were the only one(s) to have access to that feature of the system. Juries may or may not believe the testimony. They also have to prove the timestamp data on the video and/or the video itself have not been altered. The more critical the timestamp is to the case, the more focus the defense will put on discrediting it and there are various ways that can be approached.
In a murder case I assisted with where the security camera timestamp was wrong, we were able to correlate the wrong time to the right time by matching employees leaving the building and when they carded out from the factory, and product deliveries from trucking companies to the loadout facility. The police were then able to narrow down the suspect by grabbing nearby footage from convenience stores from the exit and entrance routes. It didn't need to be exact, just within a few minutes. Also, all 16 cameras could be proven to be off by the same time amount.

Much appreciated Tom! It depends on the lens capability of the camera. The Wired LPR camera that we carried from our H-series line could catch plates up to 100ft away from where it is mounted. It was designed specifically for License Plate Recognition however. There are many variables that can come into play that can make most standard cameras not useable with License Plate Capture. #9 is slightly off … you can get details that aren’t there in the original picture based on image processing algorithms but I am not sure you can use it as proof in a legal case. Processing algorithms have come a long way to be able to guess #8 - the issue I believe is that the camera is setting exposure based on the brightest light it sees. If the camera has the ability to set the focus point and adjust exposure accordingly it should be ok. But all points you made are valid … better to fix at installation than work around it
Actually the #1 mistake is the one that security companies make on every installation. Putting all the cameras on the eaves - so an intruder can walk around with their hoody up and you've recorded nothing of use for the Police. Unless you've got at least one video at around eyeball level, you are not going to get your stuff back.
good point. I wanted to hard wire cams on the 4 corners of my home, but its a one story and the fascia sits low enough that someone with a piece of rebar (or something like) could smash it. So im thinking a camera on each side of house up high near roof and window cams in front and back windows...but dont know about night vision? maybe a low profile cam on door? Im obviously trying to figure possibilities while typing. is there a suggestion out there?
@@CM-ld3dq A doorbell camera is useful. If you can, mount a camera on the ground at the edge of the property looking back, if the area is well lit then you’ll be looking up into their hoodie. I hide mine next to a rock near a path, you can’t see it from the road. If you have automatic interior lighting, put one on the landing, if they break in they won’t be worried about being seen and you might get a decent picture. Make sure to secure/conceal the recorder box, ie don’t leave the cabling visible so they can follow it back. Most dome cameras are really hard to break without making a lot of noise, having some on low eaves is fine, you need something visible to act as a deterrent anyway, get some cctv cages if you are worried. Generally automatic lighting is the best deterrent, install that first
For data transmission copper clad cable is fine, at higher frequencies the current only flows on the surface. Assume a low operating frequency of 10Mhz, 63% the current is in the first 20.6um (or 0.000812")

Awsome video! I agree too about wires! It’s for sure the best way to go if you can do it. And POE cameras are the best because it’s data and power all from 1 cable!
Mistake #1 is a sure thing. Whether you buy from Nelly or another surveillance camera company, make damn sure they have a good customer support department. Nelly has such department, and they've never let me down. I might think I know everything there is to know about surveillance cameras, but Nelly's techs know x100. They've been down those paths many time, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
Excellent video. Very educational. I do have two questions. You mention not to skimp on the quality of the cable. I am wiring my house for IP cameras. My walls are open. My questions: (1.) CAT6 with a shield or non-shielded? All my runs are well under 75 feet. (2.) Do I need to maintain a certain distance from my BX electric?. Thank you in advance.
Hey there! Great questions. 1. Non-shielded is fine unless the cat cable will be near high voltage cabling also. Then the shielded will be necessary. 2. Just do not run parallel with the bx, it needs to be at least a foot away. it will cause induced voltage into the cat wire and cause static.
Great video of facts that should be clear but never are. I have a neighbor from hell, peeps in my windows, throws glass shards to hurt my traumatized rescue dog’s paws, etc etc etc. I had to get a system for the police to do anything. I got an 8 cam POE system from Zmodo. I wish you had made this 5 years ago, I have hours of clips showing him and all types of violence. I got a restraining order against him and he violated it LITERALLY the next morning! The cops do nothing to protect me, AND IM LEGITIMATELY HANDICAPPED TOO! I will try to find a way to investigate costs, and what little I have left to defend myself. My life is complete hell, and this man has found a way to to make it far worse than anyone could take. I’m handicapped now so, I can’t work, and live in blinding pain. I’ve lost all of my friends because I can’t do anything or go anywhere. I haven’t been able to date since my fiancé left. She didn’t want to be married to someone with a spine that breaks, so when I got to 10 vertebrae, she left. I used to start relationships with coworkers or through work, it’s hard to meet someone when you can’t leave your house comfortably. Then, who wants a cripple? Anyway, sorry. Point being, I need help with better cams than I have now. I’m sure your products are of the best quality, and financially unobtainable for me, however I would like to know if it is something I could save for or if it’s a pipe dream. Essentially I’m sure I’d need at least 2 360° cams with optical zoom. Audio is as if not more important for this. I’ve pieced together cheap wireless cams from internet sites. Where it gets out of my league for sure is, thermal imaging is another need, not a luxury. I have plenty of ambient lighting and infrared has always been great, but have recently gotten 2 new cams with color night vision (just sensitive cam setting, still needs light ie infrared). My system is breaking down and I’d ideally like to have a computer program to aid in recording faces, actions, or license plates. I’m at the end of my rope. My life nonstop pain, can’t sleep, can’t eat, anxiety from the pain that causes spasms, and this A-hole who is (literally) severely mentally ill. I have no more strength to keep going and living attached to my cams on my phone or tv afraid of him hurting more animals. You should be able to see the first clip of me catching him climbing the neighbors fence to hide glass on their property to throw in my yard later at night when dark. I’ll happily forward a copy of the restraining order at your request to verify the story isn’t BS. Perhaps you could use me and my situation for positive public relations. Maybe you could prove how great you and your company are by setting up the best possible equipment to catch him (and then take it back when he’s stopped). I installed 4 cameras in the summer. Worked nice. Then I noticed 1 of the cameras had a large spot on the picture at night. Discovered as winter came along, the sun set farther to the SW. Sun was hitting the camera and burned up the camera . Had to buy a new camera and made sure it did not see the sun in the evening.
Andrew_koala So you’re saying that the camera itself doesn’t twist so you can adjust the direction? Obviously if you switch the panel around, you would also have to adjust the camera direction. But again, there should be no need to remove and then add.
Good video.. mistake number 7... reading and believing wireless specs.. my system said 100 feet in range. It was closer to 30 BEFORE i added better attena(s) and one booster / amplifier. A ring doorbell is helpful for face recognition but picks up my security ir lighting at night..

use a dedicated HI DEF camera just for plates strategically placed.. also I use a very hi def camera pointed at my monitor, then I have all my cameras on my monitor set up in grid mode, so when I am remotely viewing I open the camera I have pointed to my large monitor so I can see what each camera is doing without having to flip between cams on my phone app refreshing each time I move camera to camera, I use the one camera full screen on my phone app, so it's just like having my monitor with me at all times, works great and you can adjust focal length, lighting to optimize that very hi def camera, also I have it hard wired.. if I am driving down the road I can put my camera up against the speedometer and it's right there and I can see each camera I have set up on one screen, like my main monitor in teh office.. watch it all at once.... if I want to talk I then I go to the camera I want to talk through, basically it's like having your security monitor with you at all times, just not teh same functionality, lest not from the one said cam, you have to go to each camera to adjust whatever, but trust me if you have an app that has to refresh each camera as you go to view each cam its a headache and things can be missed due to refresh times and rates.... poke a camera at your monitor and then use the grid mode on monitor where you can see each camera, if you have so many cameras that you have more than one monitor? simple, just use a camera that has an 180 degree articulation and zoom then set up your "auto cruise" to pan from monitor to monitor, set your view time or time to sit on each monitor and it pans monitor to monitor using one single camera you see every cam you have, 100 monitors if you must, yup... works real well like this and you have all your monitors with you on one screen at all times using a remote phone app..

Most of these things are just common sense, or newbie mistakes. But I do have a background in Ethernet technology and I have set up my own poe ip camera surveillance system in my house. I made one of these mistakes (IR Flooding) but I just adjusted the camera slightly and it removed the reflective haze. Cables and hardware (RJ-45's) are extremely important! If you don't know how to terminate and test cables correctly and don't know how to set up an NVR for remote access, just hire a professional. I was able to do everything on my own other than run the cables in the wall, but I am also a network engineer so I have experience others may not. My recommendation is absolutely PoE IP cameras and use voice additionally for the front and back door and gate entrance - if you can afford it. I would stay away from wireless cameras altogether except in certain situations where a wired solution is impractical or impossible.
I’m an installer and I’m doing a take over job and it’s a new construction building and the cable left from the previous IT group looked exactly like in the video. With cables looping through the rack and everything going straight to the switch with no patch panels. Infrastructure and Designing the layout of cameras placements is key to a great installation to happen.
I've had a look at it and yes, it would be very useful,, but for the normal customer, my guess is that it's to advanced to set up, if you want to be able to do it on the fly, also, you would need much more CPU or GPU power than the average user would be comfortable using on a surveillance system. It would also be hard to get your customers to setup something like this themselves, just because they want a cheaper camera. They would probably just end up buying a better camera rather than paying an IT professional to setup this software for them and link it to another system. I on the other hand have already started installing it on one of my local servers in order to test it out on a system I'm setting up. Thanks for the tip :)

Installed it myself without any issues. The wifi signal is great even ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxE_D_sddGAdiVUKp7PkkmyxO7bRtgqmk5 when the router is located far away. I really enjoy the night vision feature that allows me to see clearly any activity near our house (mostly cars and wild animals). The motion detection is helpful to me as well to monitor what happens on our front.
9:09 maybe put there to make a point but .... like putting the camera out in the open exposed to all weather, put it under the woodwork, give it some weather protection, reduces sun flare if pointed where direct sunshine can cause issues and still get full coverage of the area you are looking at

Here are some additional mistakes/observations:
(I'll preface this by saying some security camera and NVR companies make getting some of the specifications VERY hard to obtain. Some won't provide these details at all)
NVR=Network Video Recorder
WiFi Cameras and systems:
WiFi can be jammed, especially in industrial spying/sabotage or high-end neighborhoods there is a lot of incentive for thieves to invest in radio jamming equipment. It is not so expensive that some thief that is looking at a high payoff won't use it.
SOME NVRs have a feature that outputs an alarm signal if the video input is interrupted by either device failure or jamming of this type.
Camera REAL Resolution:
In general (see focal length below), I suggest using 5MP MINIMUM cameras. However, as Nelly's guy said, make sure your NVR (network video recorder) can use the higher resolution cameras. This information is usually buried deep in the user manual or a separate data page on the vendor's website. Cheap NVRs in particular may only support 2MP cameras.
Note: the higher the camera MP rating, the more storage it will consume in both non-compressed and compressed formats. A 5MP camera will consume considerably more storage space than a 2MP camera.
Sunlight and Time Of Day:
Orient the cameras so sunlight cannot directly impinge on the camera lens AT ALL TIMES OF DAY. Keep Daylight Savings Time in mind as well. In most locations on the planet, the position/angle of the sun in the sky changes during the year. It can change a lot...especially as you get farther from the equator, and may be another factor to keep in mind when installing a camera.
A camera can be PERMANENTLY damaged if sunlight "hits" the sensor. It will of course also totally blot out your image from that camera.
Artificial Lighting and Time Of Day and Motion Detection Floodlights
When positioning your cameras, be sure to take into account lights that may turn on at certain times of day. Everything may seem OK when you first setup your camera, but then at night your camera may be overloaded by a streetlight or other light that turns on at night or when clouds/weather gets really dark.
A similar consideration exists for car headlights. You may see no problem during the day but headlights may cause major problems at night. This would be especially true when the camera is watching a gate, driveway, or parking lot.
Similarly, if your area of observation has *motion activated floodlights* they can also "swamp" the camera sensor and make any images unusable while the light is on.
1080HD/1080p Camera CLAIMS:
Keep in mind that just because a camera CLAIMS "1080HD" or "1080p" output, it doesn't actually mean the camera actually provides that level of resolution. All it means is that the output has been modified to make it compatible with 1080HD/1080p displays. The image from a 2MP camera is closer to 480p actual resolution. Only the output has been modified. There is no added detail when you simply modify an image to go from 480p to 1080p. You just get a larger format but still fuzzy image.
Focal Length:
Understand and choose the correct camera lens FOCAL LENGTH for your needs. For example, the typical wide-angle surveillance 2.8mm focal length camera gives you a wider field of view, but if you need to observe only a small area but at a greater distance away, you may want to consider a 6mm focal length lens. Or, you may want to install both at a given location. This can be critical when your camera does not offer OPTICAL zoom. It should be noted that a narrow-angle 6mm 2MP camera can provide BETTER detail than a wide-angle 2.8mm 5MP camera at a far distance, so that can affect your decision. Remember also that 2MP camera requires less storage than a 5MP camera.

IR floodlights, 850nm:
If you're going to buy IR floodlights, the almost universal wavelength of IR light used in surveillance cameras is 850nm. The other commonly sold IR light on the internet is 930nm...however it probably will NOT work in a typical surveillance system. Be sure to match the wavelength of the external IR light to your camera's IR LEDs.
Optical vs. Digital Zoom:
If you are going to DEPEND on zoom capabilities, I strongly suggest buying a camera that offers OPTICAL zoom. As the Nelly's guy said, digital zoom only magnifies, it does not provide more data/detail. OPTICAL zoom however, provides more data and more detail. An alternative as I said above, is using a camera with a longer focal length than the typical 2.8mm camera.
Data Compression:
In general, the higher the degree of compression, the more details are lost. H.264 and H.265 compressions are NOT lossless compression. A given camera and/or NVR may or may not offer a lossless compression data mode. WiFi cameras may compress the data because it results in faster network transmission and lower network bandwidth. NVRs generally offer compression to reduce the amount of storage it takes to save X hours of camera video in a given format. If you need absolutely the best video detail then lossless compression or no compression are options to look into. I'm unsure if there are any WiFi cameras that offer uncompressed data streams so in such cases you might want to consider wired camera installations. Keep in mind however, that analog camera signals degrade for every foot of cable so may only be suitable for a fairly short-range installation, and for maximum image clarity, analog cables need to be replaced after as little as 5 years in service (depends on environmental factors). Consult your security system vendor and get these kinds of details in writing. Some vendors will verbally assure you about anything you ask to make a sale.
ONVIF compatibility (WiFi only):
ONVIF is a surveillance camera and system standard that helps ensure that a WiFi camera you buy is compatible with your NVR. There are both ONVIF Versions and Profiles that you may need to meet to ensure full compatibility. However, I've been unable to obtain ONVIF information from some vendors, so you may have to buy and try to determine compability. In such cases, I suggest buying from a website/vendor that will accept "returns for any reason", preferably with no return shipping or "restocking" charges. For more info on ONVIF, just search the internet.

You’ve earned a new customer, I’ve had my truck broken into 2x in past year..I currently have Nest cameras that are very close to my WiFi router and still have connectivity issues on top of not great zooming...can see an image of a person but not enough to catch them..I want the best cameras I can get but also I’m not a tech guy..I’d like to use my phone if possible but definitely want wired cameras...I’ll be calling tomorrow..

I'm brand new to the whole home security system idea, and in less then one week I've gone from thinking of buying the "simply easy (and safe)" wireless battery only system, to rushing out to my local warehouse club to buy a wireless battery system I could also run on constant power, to now a more thorough investigation of a PoE system. You're 9 points were spot on! And, I have a bonus mistake you could add to your list. "Taking advice from the wrong people - like your buddy who did zero research before buying his system."
But also consider that his needs might have been served well enough with wireless but your needs are indeed different.

Almost every home and about 1 out of 4 businesses I walk into have the DVR box sitting in plain view. Thieves around here have quickly learned to just cut the cables from the box and take it, and therefore any evidence, with them. I usually place a cheap or old junker box in plain view with a bunch of dead cables coming to it. The real box usually goes inside a large firesafe. Cooling has not been an issue, the UPS power backup box and the DVR make just enough heat to keep moisture out of the safes. Thanks for your video, it had some great information in it.

I noticed one that is missing here, when using IR cameras, you can extend their range at night with IR flood lights. Be sure to position them out of view of the cameras though. My cameras have around a 30' range with the built in LEDs, with my IR flood lights, they pick up details at close to 200'. Another thing with IR cameras, don't use CFL bulbs in the field of view, they make the cameras useless.

I want to film at night where there is good street light cover. Can you tell me, would IR work under those conditions?
A purchase caution. Be sure to get the IR floodlight with the same wavelength output as used in your camera(s). Some sellers try to con people into buying their 940nm IR floodlight by highlighting it's IR LEDs are "invisible" or "less visible" to human eyes (you don't see the deep red glow of typical surveillance camera IR LEDs) compared to the typical 850nm IR LEDs...but these 940nm IR floodlights won't work with the typically 850nm IR LED cameras. Sometimes the sellers don't even specify the wavelength of their product and customers won't understand there is a difference in IR LED lighting...or they will put the info in really small letters in some obscure place and then claim you can't return it because it was YOUR error to buy the wrong light. Even worse, I've seen sellers spec their light as 850nm in one place, and 940nm in another, adding to the problem.
Note: to be more stealthy, SOME systems do use 940nm LEDs for illumination, but most consumer-grade cameras use 850nm IR LEDs.

Amazing Demo on mistakes I've accepted my Swann bright white glare in day time and as I just learned ir flooding nightmare. I've made poor choices in life and spending big money after being robbed not just by criminals but by Swann. Dummy camera would have done better when I can't see.

We used an outdoor camera indoors, pointing outdoors through a window. The IR glare was ridiculous... We had to completely disable the IR lights. they weren't needed thanks to the area being completely lit. Black electrical tape over the IR LED lights can work in a pinch but it's frustrating if you leave any leaks.

Actually, higher resolution CAN be achieved via computer processing, but it requires multiple frames of an image to do so. You can't just grab a screen-shot and enhance it via this process. It takes multiple images of the same object and via software combines them and may be able to produce a composite image that strips out much of the noise while at the same time introducing pixels from all the images and mapping them into a new image that produces more detail.
For one SIMPLISTIC example, one part of the eyes may be obscured or "out of focus" in one frame (but the rest of the face is decent), but the eyes are "in focus" in another frame. So the software removes the out of focus section from the first frame and replaces that section only with the in focus section from the second frame...thus producing an image with superior resolution overall. Also, the data compression used by a camera and/or system may produce less than optimal resolution of the eyes in one frame, but when it compresses the data for the next frame the eyes were compressed with more information. The results of compression can vary due to lighting, distance, motion, etc. Dealing with compression artifacts can be quite difficult.
However, this kind of software is as far as I know, still all proprietary, and mostly available and used by government agencies or vendors who specialize in image enhancement. I've not seen any software package that a typical consumer would use (or would want to pay high dollars for) that would provide enhancement in this manner.
Similar techniques are used in producing higher resolution images from optical telescopes.
Of course, it also helps a LOT if your data are not compressed at all. However this requires a LOT more data storage and most consumers would balk at either the higher cost or the decreased amount of video stored before the "old" data are overridden.
Note: I don't recommend any camera with less than 5MP of sensor resolution. Even if a camera is advertised as "1080HD" or similar, a 2MP camera is NOT actually capable of providing true 1080p information. It could be 480p (or even lower). The system may DISPLAY 1080p on the HDMI output, however the 480p image has simply been "stretched" to meet the 1080p format of the display. No "HD" information actually exists.
Also not true. Visual machine learning is a thing. Plenty of AI software can blow up an image AND fill in details where there were none.
Some of these features can be found in smartphones and can be applied to the images taken - only a matter of time before security cameras build this in.
Yep. Been messing with cans since 2009. I have made so many mistakes that I now do installs on the side and I have multiple examples around my house/property for customers to compare in real life before buying.
Have had a lot of signal issues caused by weather or spiders at my full time job.
Here is the one you missed: aiming outdoor cameras at the east /west horizon where the sun sets/rises. Near time, the sun blocks out the view and changes the exact area due to the seasons. SE to NE and SW to NW winter to summer. Keep the angle low; no sky view.

Pretty good tips overall. #3 about wifi cameras has a lot of truth to it, but if you have a large enough property and multiple wifi access points, you can totally make this work. I have most of my cameras hardwired, but I'm still able to get two 3MP cameras on a single dedicated AP with no issues at all. 24/7 recording.
My favorite type of advertisement -- provide some value to the viewer in return for watching. I watched the video looking for information on setting up a system I've already purchased for home. Making the video wasn't a waste though. I'll be replacing the system at my business soon and I'll certainly give Nelly a call.

9:30 ... also to add if pointed too high, when there's no clouds and the sun is shining bright it blocks out some viewing angles. Had this issue with two of my cameras I couldn't make-out images that were further away when the sun was bright on the lower horizon. Had to adjust to compensate for the sun during late hours of the afternoon.

I am somewhat conflicted regarding exposed cameras as a deterrent, as opposed to concealed cameras to obtain video without letting the intruder know. Have you ever experienced a client's DVR being sought out and stolen/destroyed during an intrusion? Do you offer DVRs that incrementally upload to a secure remote storage server? Here is number 7: Installing cameras which are too high or otherwise impossible to access and maintain. Spiders just love building webs on outdoor CCTV cameras so you need to be able to get to them to clear the spider webs off, sometimes daily, with a suitable long brush or similar.
Oh yeah, that was one mistake I made too. Good one!!! I would use a 10 foot ladder and still couldn't reach the dang camera very well. Won't do that again.

I know of couple of murderers that would beg to differ.
If a case depends on the surveillance timestamp, then prosecutor will have to "prove" it's reliable. Since most can be set by anyone with access to the system, that can be a challenge. Usually the best you get is testimony from the owner/operator that they set the time correctly and used a reliable source (like a cellphone carrier's timestamp or US time standard broadcast from Fort Collins, Colorado) to do so, AND that they were the only one(s) to have access to that feature of the system. Juries may or may not believe the testimony. They also have to prove the timestamp data on the video and/or the video itself have not been altered. The more critical the timestamp is to the case, the more focus the defense will put on discrediting it and there are various ways that can be approached.
In a murder case I assisted with where the security camera timestamp was wrong, we were able to correlate the wrong time to the right time by matching employees leaving the building and when they carded out from the factory, and product deliveries from trucking companies to the loadout facility. The police were then able to narrow down the suspect by grabbing nearby footage from convenience stores from the exit and entrance routes. It didn't need to be exact, just within a few minutes. Also, all 16 cameras could be proven to be off by the same time amount.

It depends on the lens capability of the camera. The Wired LPR camera that we carried from our H-series line could catch plates up to 100ft away from where it is mounted. It was designed specifically for License Plate Recognition however.
There are many variables that can come into play that can make most standard cameras not useable with License Plate Capture. Such as weather conditions, distance, speed of vehicle, frame rate as a few examples.

#9 is slightly off … you can get details that aren’t there in the original picture based on image processing algorithms but I am not sure you can use it as proof in a legal case. Processing algorithms have come a long way to be able to guess
#8 - the issue I believe is that the camera is setting exposure based on the brightest light it sees. If the camera has the ability to set the focus point and adjust exposure accordingly it should be ok.
But all points you made are valid … better to fix at installation than work around it
Actually the #1 mistake is the one that security companies make on every installation. Putting all the cameras on the eaves - so an intruder can walk around with their hoody up and you've recorded nothing of use for the Police. Unless you've got at least one video at around eyeball level, you are not going to get your stuff back.
good point. I wanted to hard wire cams on the 4 corners of my home, but its a one story and the fascia sits low enough that someone with a piece of rebar (or something like) could smash it. So im thinking a camera on each side of house up high near roof and window cams in front and back windows...but dont know about night vision? maybe a low profile cam on door? Im obviously trying to figure possibilities while typing. is there a suggestion out there?
@@CM-ld3dq A doorbell camera is useful. If you can, mount a camera on the ground at the edge of the property looking back, if the area is well lit then you’ll be looking up into their hoodie. I hide mine next to a rock near a path, you can’t see it from the road.
If you have automatic interior lighting, put one on the landing, if they break in they won’t be worried about being seen and you might get a decent picture.
Make sure to secure/conceal the recorder box, ie don’t leave the cabling visible so they can follow it back.
Most dome cameras are really hard to break without making a lot of noise, having some on low eaves is fine, you need something visible to act as a deterrent anyway, get some cctv cages if you are worried.
Generally automatic lighting is the best deterrent, install that first
For data transmission copper clad cable is fine, at higher frequencies the current only flows on the surface. Assume a low operating frequency of 10Mhz, 63% the current is in the first 20.6um (or 0.000812")

Mistake #1 is a sure thing. Whether you buy from Nelly or another surveillance camera company, make damn sure they have a good customer support department. Nelly has such department, and they've never let me down. I might think I know everything there is to know about surveillance cameras, but Nelly's techs know x100. They've been down those paths many time, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Hey there! Great questions.
1. Non-shielded is fine unless the cat cable will be near high voltage cabling also. Then the shielded will be necessary.
2. Just do not run parallel with the bx, it needs to be at least a foot away. it will cause induced voltage into the cat wire and cause static.

I have a neighbor from hell, peeps in my windows, throws glass shards to hurt my traumatized rescue dog’s paws, etc etc etc.
I had to get a system for the police to do anything. I got an 8 cam POE system from Zmodo. I wish you had made this 5 years ago, I have hours of clips showing him and all types of violence.
I got a restraining order against him and he violated it LITERALLY the next morning! The cops do nothing to protect me, AND IM LEGITIMATELY HANDICAPPED TOO!
I will try to find a way to investigate costs, and what little I have left to defend myself. My life is complete hell, and this man has found a way to to make it far worse than anyone could take. I’m handicapped now so, I can’t work, and live in blinding pain. I’ve lost all of my friends because I can’t do anything or go anywhere. I haven’t been able to date since my fiancé left. She didn’t want to be married to someone with a spine that breaks, so when I got to 10 vertebrae, she left. I used to start relationships with coworkers or through work, it’s hard to meet someone when you can’t leave your house comfortably. Then, who wants a cripple?

Point being, I need help with better cams than I have now. I’m sure your products are of the best quality, and financially unobtainable for me, however I would like to know if it is something I could save for or if it’s a pipe dream.
Essentially I’m sure I’d need at least 2 360° cams with optical zoom. Audio is as if not more important for this. I’ve pieced together cheap wireless cams from internet sites. Where it gets out of my league for sure is, thermal imaging is another need, not a luxury. I have plenty of ambient lighting and infrared has always been great, but have recently gotten 2 new cams with color night vision (just sensitive cam setting, still needs light ie infrared).
My system is breaking down and I’d ideally like to have a computer program to aid in recording faces, actions, or license plates. I’m at the end of my rope. My life nonstop pain, can’t sleep, can’t eat, anxiety from the pain that causes spasms, and this A-hole who is (literally) severely mentally ill. I have no more strength to keep going and living attached to my cams on my phone or tv afraid of him hurting more animals.
You should be able to see the first clip of me catching him climbing the neighbors fence to hide glass on their property to throw in my yard later at night when dark.
I’ll happily forward a copy of the restraining order at your request to verify the story isn’t BS.
Perhaps you could use me and my situation for positive public relations. Maybe you could prove how great you and your company are by setting up the best possible equipment to catch him (and then take it back when he’s stopped). I don’t expect anything for free, it was just an idea.

It would depend on the model recorder you have. Usually you can find that option in its usermanual.

I installed 4 cameras in the summer. Worked nice. Then I noticed 1 of the cameras had a large spot on the picture at night. Discovered as winter came along, the sun set farther to the SW. Sun was hitting the camera and burned up the camera . Had to buy a new camera and made sure it did not see the sun in the evening.

Here’s a tip for you. @ 6:32 - Why not just turn the ceiling panel 180 degrees? No need to unscrew and re-screw...or put more holes in the panel.

Andrew_koala So you’re saying that the camera itself doesn’t twist so you can adjust the direction? Obviously if you switch the panel around, you would also have to adjust the camera direction. But again, there should be no need to remove and then add.

Good video.. mistake number 7... reading and believing wireless specs.. my system said 100 feet in range. It was closer to 30 BEFORE i added better attena(s) and one booster / amplifier. A ring doorbell is helpful for face recognition but picks up my security ir lighting at night..
The constant camera cut to different angles was kind of weird good advice tho

quite odd with your camera angles though.
use a dedicated HI DEF camera just for plates strategically placed..
also I use a very hi def camera pointed at my monitor, then I have all my cameras on my monitor set up in grid mode, so when I am remotely viewing I open the camera I have pointed to my large monitor so I can see what each camera is doing without having to flip between cams on my phone app refreshing each time I move camera to camera, I use the one camera full screen on my phone app, so it's just like having my monitor with me at all times, works great and you can adjust focal length, lighting to optimize that very hi def camera, also I have it hard wired..
if I am driving down the road I can put my camera up against the speedometer and it's right there and I can see each camera I have set up on one screen, like my main monitor in teh office.. watch it all at once....
if I want to talk I then I go to the camera I want to talk through, basically it's like having your security monitor with you at all times, just not teh same functionality, lest not from the one said cam, you have to go to each camera to adjust whatever, but trust me if you have an app that has to refresh each camera as you go to view each cam its a headache and things can be missed due to refresh times and rates.... poke a camera at your monitor and then use the grid mode on monitor where you can see each camera, if you have so many cameras that you have more than one monitor? simple, just use a camera that has an 180 degree articulation and zoom then set up your "auto cruise" to pan from monitor to monitor, set your view time or time to sit on each monitor and it pans monitor to monitor using one single camera you see every cam you have, 100 monitors if you must, yup... works real well like this and you have all your monitors with you on one screen at all times using a remote phone app..

Well I guess you don't understand security systems because these were surveillance systems.
Most of these things are just common sense, or newbie mistakes. But I do have a background in Ethernet technology and I have set up my own poe ip camera surveillance system in my house. I made one of these mistakes (IR Flooding) but I just adjusted the camera slightly and it removed the reflective haze.
Cables and hardware (RJ-45's) are extremely important! If you don't know how to terminate and test cables correctly and don't know how to set up an NVR for remote access, just hire a professional. I was able to do everything on my own other than run the cables in the wall, but I am also a network engineer so I have experience others may not.
My recommendation is absolutely PoE IP cameras and use voice additionally for the front and back door and gate entrance - if you can afford it. I would stay away from wireless cameras altogether except in certain situations where a wired solution is impractical or impossible.
Good video, but omg let me fix all those cables for you. I was having mini strokes every time you showed footage of your cabling.

I’m an installer and I’m doing a take over job and it’s a new construction building and the cable left from the previous IT group looked exactly like in the video. With cables looping through the rack and everything going straight to the switch with no patch panels. Infrastructure and Designing the layout of cameras placements is key to a great installation to happen.

True, but is it able to do it on the fly? In that case, it could be interesting to try.
I've had a look at it and yes, it would be very useful,, but for the normal customer, my guess is that it's to advanced to set up, if you want to be able to do it on the fly, also, you would need much more CPU or GPU power than the average user would be comfortable using on a surveillance system. It would also be hard to get your customers to setup something like this themselves, just because they want a cheaper camera. They would probably just end up buying a better camera rather than paying an IT professional to setup this software for them and link it to another system. I on the other hand have already started installing it on one of my local servers in order to test it out on a system I'm setting up. Thanks for the tip :)

Yup, had weatherproofing issues with connections too.
Installed it myself without any issues. The wifi signal is great even ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxE_D_sddGAdiVUKp7PkkmyxO7bRtgqmk5 when the router is located far away. I really enjoy the night vision feature that allows me to see clearly any activity near our house (mostly cars and wild animals). The motion detection is helpful to me as well to monitor what happens on our front.
9:09 maybe put there to make a point but .... like putting the camera out in the open exposed to all weather, put it under the woodwork, give it some weather protection, reduces sun flare if pointed where direct sunshine can cause issues and still get full coverage of the area you are looking at
