Great review…have a 2013 F Sport Obisdian Black with Flaxen interior 140K miles. I’ve had the ES, IS, and 1st and 2nd gen GS300. I agree this 4th gen is the best one out of them. Only issues were replacing CV boots and rear shocks because of rough midwest roads. Keeping it till the wheels fall off😂

Perfect combination of comfort, reliability, and performance. I'm not a lover of driving so I'm not missing the edge in performance an Audi or BMW may have over the Lexus. I want a nice commuter that can get into traffic quickly when I need it. My 51k 2015 GS350 has met/exceeded expectations in all 3 categories since I bought it in 2018 with 19k. Owned for 5.5 years (4.5 years of driving - thanks chinavirus), bought 1 set of tires at ~35k, change my own oil with Mobil1, replaced battery once, new air filters, average over 26mpg with mix of highway/city. I plan to drive this until I retire in 10 years.

Bro awesome and joyful review much appreciated. I was chuckling watching your facial expressions as you drove -you were clearly enjoying the ride. I totally agree with your sentiment on the pre-facelift being your favorite era. They drive with more of an edge than the post facelift and I think look much better. It seems like the 2016+ models were retooled to be more of a classic Lexus style with smoother but less edgy acceleration and handling.
The 2015 is commonly thought of as the best year for this generation. I however would vote for my car (clearly there's some prejudice here LOL), which is a 2013 RWD F Sport. I love the 6 speed (2013 was the only year with 6 and not the 8) and the rear wheel drive characteristics of my car (I live in a very warm climate so AWD is not useful for me). I drove a 2015 RWD and it was nice but the 8 speed took so much life out of the car in my opinion. You had to mash the crap out of the gas pedal for it to go fast, and I do not have a heavy foot, plus there was some disconcerting gear hunting at low speeds which I did not enjoy.
Only small correction I would make is that the 2013-2015 came with the 2GR-FSE and the '16+ came with the 2GR-FKS.

I've been driving a EU spec 2012 GS450h F Sport for around 5 years and it is a really lovely car. That particular car is also specced really well as it has all the mentioned extras such as radar cruise control, 4-wheel steering, power trunk and also the triple LED headlights. 40 MPG is a pipe dream though, just not going to happen. In my experience, with a lot of highway driving, 7-7,5 l/100km or about 31-33 US MPG is the best case scenario. In the winter with cold temperatures and mixed driving it is more like 23-24 MPG. But I think this car shouldn't be viewed upon as an economy car. If you do, you will be disappointed, but on the other hand if you look at it as a luxury (performance) sedan with good fuel economy, it's a whole another story.

Yeah, I'm 6'-0. my wife 5'-10, son #1 is 6'-3 and son #2 is 6'-5 and it's all legs... It's a struggle taking this car anywhere as a family. It's best used for in-town trips with this clan such as going out to dinner, and we're perfectly fine with that. It just requires some planning to get the shortest legs behind the longest. We use our high-mileage '08 Highlander for road trips to avoid misery. That thing has so much legroom in the second row it's impressive. The Highlander's 2nd row seats, however, are flat AF, though at least the seatbacks recline.

If you plan on shorter drives, below 45 minutes with multiple people of that size, it’ll be tight but it’ll be doable. But this is a midsized sedan, so you shouldn’t expect tons of room. I opted for it over the IS350 simply because it is a bit bigger. Tbh doesn’t really show it in the corners though.

I love it. One thing I do miss though is my 2017 Civic EX-L. The GS350 is definitely nicer and more luxurious but the Civic just has the light weight/great stability and has some cool features like the remote start, walk-away auto lock, and blind spot camera. A different class of vehicles though.

I love to still see people reviewing this car! I have this exact model in Platinum Silver, but with the Cabernet interior. You mentioned the "red" interior being gaudy, and I agree that the 2016 and newer "Circuit Red" interior is tacky as hell. But the Cabernet is a very tasteful brick-like red, and I spent months searching the internet for either Cabernet or Flaxen interior in my F-Sport as I'm over having black leather interiors. I specifically was searching for a 2015 model as I hated the new full-height "Spindle Grill" of the 2016 redesign despite that model having tons of new safety tech added. Yes, the steering is electric, and I personally wish the parking lot speed steering assist was softer, so you spend less effort sawing back and forth while parking. I think you may not have mentioned the Drive Modes button, which toggles between Eco, Normal, Sport and in the F-Sport model Sport+. Each mode has different accelerator pedal reaction characteristics, transmission shifting behavior and stiffness of the adjustable shocks. That's the one component of the F-Sport package that's more performance-oriented vs the rest of the items in the package just being aesthetic or "extra". You're almost correct that there's not a third HVAC zone for the rear seat. However, there's a not-so-easy to understand "S-FLOW" button on the HVAC control panel that does several things. It toggles sending air to those 2 rear vents in the console. With the S-Flow on, those vents have no airflow. Turning OFF S-Flow (NOT intuitive) allows air to those rear grills, but even then only the front seat occupants can control the temperature. I've never understood what temp the rear folks are getting if the two front occupants are dualling with high and low temps. The S-Flow also controls automatic triggering of the seat heaters for the front seat passengers.
There was one other model package you missed, the very rare "Luxury" model. This one has fancier mutli-spoke 19" rims, articulating upper seatbacks for the front seat passengers to adjust for shoulder support, and a comprehensive user interface built into the pull-down armrest to control rear-seat HVAC (so yeah, I guess a 3rd zone?), audio and also added rear seat heaters. Oh, and you mentioned that dual temp system in the front - in my family's 2008 Toyota Highlander there is a dual temp system as well, and there's a physical "SYNC" button so the driver can regain control of the dual temps. However, in the GS you have to wade through several clicks with that horrible mouse you mentioned to find the "DUAL" toggle at the bottom of the HVAC control window. It's the ONE missing physical button I miss the most.
Thanks for the thorough and fun-to-watch review!

hello fellow platinum silver/cabernet red buddy! this was my #1 choice in color combo and was lucky to find it back when i bought my 2014 in 2017. I can't believe how bright circuit red is on the new lexus models. do you have rattles in your car? at 94k miles i had a rattle that sounded like it was coming from the drivers side dash vent, but was actually a rattle from the window controls on the door. you can pop off that entire glossy panel that contains the switches and use a glue gun to glue the 2 panels together (glossy top panel and lower panel which is hidden inside the door). this rattle drove me insane for years until i found a fix for it online! also i think the rear sunshade rattles over bumps. my drivers side view mirror has also stopped moving left-right...reading forums it seems like this is an issue across multiple lexus models where the grease inside the mirror housing on the gears gums up and prevents the mirror from moving. there's a DIY repair to cut up the motor housing and clean the grease...or buy a new mechanism for 500-700 dollars! otherwise it drives great and is very comfortable.

@@christophers.4007 Hey man! Yeah, I was looking for either Platinum Silver/Cabernet or Atomic Silver/Flaxen as my only choices. I would have settled for the Nebula Grey exterior if I had to. I prefer silver to most colors these days. Regarding rattles - I've had a rattle in the sunroof mechanism since the day I test drove the car with only 26,000 miles on it. There was a Technical Service Bulletin on how to repair that problem if presented by the client, and the dealer had to fully disassemble the interior to get at it - above the driver's head. They replaced ONE part of two possible faulty parts, as that's what they told me was Lexus' prescription for this repair. A "newbie" shop tech damaged my door sills using a metal pry bar to remove the plastic sill trim, so after the sunroof repair I complained about the dents in the sill sheet metal on all 4 doors (idiot) and they kept the car another 3 weeks to send it to their "preferred" body shop. SO, after a month of NOT driving my "new to me" car and driving RX-350 loaners, I got my car back and the RATTLE WAS STILL THERE! They said OK we'll now have to do the teardown again and replace that OTHER part.... UGH. This time, someone drove the car under something low-hanging, and mildly damaged the roof, shark fin antenna and trunk lid. It was only a minor scratch, but again, body work, remove the interior trim a third time to access the shark fin attachment points (you can't make this stuff up) and a loaner. This was my Certified Pre-Owned Lexus GS sold to me by one of Massachusetts' FIRST Lexus dealers! Crazy. That second repair seemed to fix the problem - temporarily! Man, that sunroof mechanism is just poorly engineered in that the cable which the motor spools back and forth to slide the sunroof manages to rattle in it's channel, or something like that. The problem still occasionally rears it's ugly head, and as others have stated in forums, it's often on SMOOTH roads. Bizarre.
I have definitely heard that obnoxious rattle in the driver's door window control panel, and have also read about it in forums. It mostly rattles when I'm playing loud music with thunderous bass, and that plastic vibrates and pisses me off. I have yet to attempt fixing it. I'll have it all apart one of these days...
I have not had problems with my mirrors, thank God. I live in a cold area and always think that's going to eventually be a problem. It's already happened on my wife's much newer '19 Mazda CX-5, and those were replaced under warranty. My Lexus now has 76,000 miles on her.

@@InexplicableBill damn, sucks about the dealer experience. You think you're leaving your car in the hand of experts, but they are sloppy just like anyone else. I've only brought mine to the dealer for the fuel pump recall, otherwise it goes to my trusted independent mechanic. Please repair the rattle from the switches, it makes a world of difference and literally can take 5 minutes or less. Put painters tape on the glossy side around the edges(so you don't accidentally scratch the gloss), then use a plastic pry/trim tool, prying first from where the hand grab is and work your way along the side of the panel towards the dash. Once its off, there is 1 electrical connector to disconnect. Once you have the unit out, you will see how its made of basically 2 rectangles that are snapped together with plastic clips. If you shake it you will see the 2 plastic rectangles have some play.... get a hot glue gun and just put some dabs where they connect to one another. Very simple and makes a huge immediate improvement!

I have hit 100MPH a few times and you couldn't tell between that and 60. Very smooth and well-planted. It has great sound insulation. Great place to be inside the cabin. I have the Mark Levinson and Triple Beam lights. These lights really dress up the car and give it a great facelift. It is very unusual to see these on the road, never mind one with the triple beams. Yeah, Toyota needs to figure out a means of notifying when diff levels drop! Our '08 Highlander just lost it's front diff at 238K miles, and we were quoted $4,500 for a USED diff, $5,500 for new. At this age and mileage, the car is basically totaled even though we just put over $4K into it for tires, brakes, suspension components and motor mounts and a nice aftermarket stereo system for the college kiddo. We lost the transmission in this car at 165K miles for the same reason - main seal failure, seeping gear oil. On several occasions over the years I asked my Toyota dealer to look into the wet (trans fluid) outer case of the trans and diff - "normal seepage" they said. Always paid for their high priced "factory" service, and ended up with the shaft when these failures happened way beyond the factory warranty. If I had the time I'd sue my dealer for negligence as their neglect of checking these fluid levels during their "Multi-point check" during oil changes was missing. Toyota and Lexus vehicles are definitely reliable, but when they do fail, they do so SPECTACULARLY!

@@Mr921kevinI don't think so, and I personally wouldn't want that. More headaches down the road. Unless you change your cars frequently. I don't 😅

Great review Bern. Good looking car with a great sound track. I have several Ford Trucks and a 4 Runner and they all ride like trucks so I was looking for a sporty, peppy 4 door sedan that would give me a smooth ride and be fun to take on long interstate trips. I need sell a few trucks and find me a GS like this one.

There's a 2014 with 156k miles im about to check out tomorrow. What should I be looking for and what should I be alarmed about?

    • @BernonCars
      @BernonCars  Рік тому

Honestly not much to go wrong with these! I’d at least check leaks, any rubber hoses, and suspension, like noticing if it clunks at all and such

@Bern on Cars dude, he handed me the keys, said have fun and we'll see you soon. I Said WHAT?! He puts the plate on and says," see ya soon. Have fun." I just kinda sat there for a second🤣🤣 But holy shit is this thing mean for a lil sedan. My first car and daily driver has been a 2017 Chevy Cruze, so this has actually blown my mind.

Toyota/ Lexus really know how to💩on thier loyal consumers. They could've built a new GS on a shortened LS chassis with RC styling.

Unfortunately, *new car buyers* aren’t buying sport sedans anymore. It’s all about the smallest entry level IS, smaller SUV like UX and RX, or biggest unnecessary SUV like LX. Same can be said for Mercedes with all these CLAs, GLCs, and G wagons. The market is driven (pun unintended) by new car buyers and the enthusiasts are but a fraction. We’re also smart enough not to buy it brand new so it’s hard for people who don’t appreciate sport sedans to justify spending $10k extra on a less fuel efficient car only a few inches longer than an IS, C class, or 3-series. Lexus isn’t making money on the GS despite it being a fantastic car for most people willing to give it a try.
