    Getting ready to fletch my first dozen arrows in a couple days. Well, as soon as the arrow shafts get here. Watching your videos has made it where I feel confident enough to try it out. My arrows clock left off of both my bows, so I went with an Arizona EZ Fletch Mini Max with a left helical. Because, like you say, why not. Thanks for all the awesome information.

    IMO, the easiest vane to get 100% perfect results is the Q2i. The base is so flexible it practically seats itself on the shaft.

    I used some glue from last year to fletch a dozen arrows this year. Explains the problems I've had. I had a couple fletchings get peeled off when passing through a deer, but they worked fine up until that point at least.

    Gorilla gell super glue will stick any vane to carbon shafts, but you have to clean the shafts with acetone first.

    Thanks for the tip on dating the glue. Yes, I had some old glue , never thinking about it not working. Unfortunately most of the feathers feel off the aluminum arrows. I bought NEW glue and re-fletched the arrows..SUCCESS! It would be nice if you added some guidelines here. Is 6 months too old? etc., etc.

    I'm using a bottle of CA glue that I opened 4 years ago!
    Never had an issue.
    I don't keep it in the fridge, it's just in the box along with my other archery spares kit.

    I freeze my glue actually to slow the deterioration from ambient moisture. Another issue is not degreasing and working in too high humidity.

    That explains some things. Guess I got a couple bottles that are going to be relegated to the utility drawer for jobs that don't need such quick and strong stick (small wood fills, fixing plastic stuff, etc).

    I use 3M 86A adhesion promoter on my AAE and Tac vanes since they are a polyurethane. I tried to get the MSD for the pens but neither company will give it up and when pressed they hang up the phone. At work we use this promoter for exactly the same reason to attach poly to a carbon base. Its available in wipes, cans etc.

    If you keep your CA glue in the refrigerator when not in use, whether its open or not, it will stay good much longer. It will still go bad. But it will last at least half again or more longer than not in the fridge. Tim Gillingham told me this at the Iowa Pro-Am several years ago.

    So the glue does get old , but the stuff in the a
    Pen is a catalyst. It's acetone. I use it on the vane weather it says to or not. It creates a chemical reaction and causes the glue to heat up. As if you were mixing epoxy. Like adding the two parts. If you don't use it , on certain arrows the vanes will most certainly pop off. I use a cue tip

    OH Damn. never thought about the age of the glue. Just figured if it runs it's good. Always blamed the application ( not enough) or the fletching ( sanded wrong or not smooth enough , I make my own when I can , good for the ego) Thanks

    Brand new to bow hunting. I want to get into bare shaft tuning with adult arrows, but that obviously requires the shafts to be re-fletched. When buying fletchings, is it best to use the "buy once cry once" philosophy or will any old fletchings do? Any recommendations?

  • @robertculpepper1508
    @robertculpepper1508 Рік тому

    I tried the application pen and arrow wraps. Just glue your fletchings right to the arrow. A drop of glue at the tip and the rear and they aren't coming off at all.

  • @timbow50

    I tried the TAC. Vanes. Bought all their stuff. Some of the vane bases were twisted etc so when they were mounted they were angled totally different than other vanes that were normal. Vanes fell off sometimes on the FIRST shot. I’ve been building arrows for years with every vane made I guess and NEVER EVER had issues like this junk. It was an expensive lesson. I have wondered how much trouble Levi has had in getting every vane to stick when he’s building his arrows? Pretty sure we will never know.

    In my 27 years of fletching my own arrows I have used all sorts of glue. Saunders NVP Cement is my all time favorite. I won't use anything else if given a choice. I use it for all sorts of stuff other than fletching as well. It will last until you use it up. There is no timeline on it. I will use locktite gel control or green top gorilla glue if I am in a pinch.

  • @fahlvfaust677

    Can I use 3M primer? Usually I only use Korean 401 super glue and add 3M primer to the vanes so that the vanes adhesion is strong and neat. What I can see is that 3M primer bonds very well to carbon shafts.

    If your glue comes out in clumps.... time to change? I use E6000 from Wally World. Don't use Gorilla glue for feathers. It dissolves the quill! Side hack: I rub string wax on the fletching jig and the excess quill glue won't stick to the jig.

      Mr Jordan is correct.
      If you ram test them. They are all "stiff".
      Ok.....
      But does your bow shoot the best in that position ? Put in the work or have half assed results.
      The set will at least be consistent. But not the best.

  • @Waty8413
    @Waty8413 Рік тому

    Bad glue doesn't explain why you can have one vane stick and the very next refuse to cooperate. Theres more going on there and I've found prepping certain vanes with solvents prevents this. I think what is really happening is that the vanes either have a mold release agent, or are leaching plasticizers, or you maybe you rubber your greasy nose and then touched the vane.... .....something is different and causes inconsistent results. Prepping the vane withers acetone or alcohol removes whatever crud is on the vane.
    Is old glue less gooders? Absolutely. Is it the only thing causing vanes to fall off or not stick? I dont think it's that simple.
