- Many, including myself, thought the majority of Xbox's layoffs for 2024 had already come and gone. Not only is that not the case, but this is arguably the worst round we've seen as four Bethesda teams have been shutdown in Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog Games.

They made "one of the best games" in like 2018 and it was going to be a multiplat title until Microsoft felt the need to buy Zenimax. Xbots don't buy games and by the time they released it nobody else cared either.. HiFi Rush wasn't new, it was made finished a couple of years ago

They make more money just sitting on Activision and doing nothing than they would trying to sell hardware. They can literally take in billions of profit from COD paypigs and Candy Crush Karens by doing nothing, just owning them. Selling Xbox has been a failure ever since Mattrick and Spencer, and going third party seems like the best course for Microsoft shareholders.

Ghost wire Tokyo was one of my favorite next Gen games. One of my favorite games of the past few years. I don't even like open world games but that game was so unique... This is a horrible decision.

This was to appease higher ups wanting a immediate return on investment a show of "see we are working on it" You don't drop 72 billion dollars in an industry and don't expect shifts especially with the inflated growth of 2020 coming to a halt. Hi-fi rush was one of my absolute favorite in 2023. Plus, I think Xbox really needed their own horror franchise, that is the Evil Within, and many gamers were anticipating the Evin Within 3. Crazy to find out such a successful studio was shut down.

Why would HiFi Rush have saved the studio? Xbots don't buy games they only play them on the rental service so there go the "sales" and the game was started in 2018 and finished a couple of years ago, originally intended to be a full on multiplat

Closing Tango is an absolutely foolish act. They’ve done nothing but release consistently good to great games. On any given day I see comments asking for Evil Within 3, while it wasn’t my cup of tea, I still saw it as the good game that it was. Meanwhile Hi-Fi Rush was in my top five last year, only beat out by Alan Wake 2, BG3, and FFXVI. That game was an absolute blast and it deserved every ounce of acclaim it got. It’s a shame we won’t get a sequel from the unbelievably talented studio that made it to begin with.
Closing Tango is disgusting. I spend 90% of my gaming time on Xbox. This makes me want to not.
Same, been with Xbox since '01 and now this news has me thinking of jumping ship to pc come next gen, just play on steam big picture mode and with an xbox controller.

Ghostwire Tokyo and Prey were some of my two favorite games of the past 5 years. Pretty pissed off with this decision, especially considering there were rumors of a sequal to ghostwire.
Same, even though ghostwire didn't market well, I really enjoyed that game, after playing games on Xbox for over ten years, it was the only game I had full achievements in. I've never been so disappointed in Microsoft, I thinking it’s time to build a PC😢😢

I believe the arkane guys that made prey are gone anyways. What i read in the article is the roundhouse people are being moved to zenimax.
It sounds like Arkane Austin was already gutted from up to 70% of the studio leaving during the development of Redfall, so while it really sucks that one at least makes sense. And many of the remaining staff are going to other Bethesda Studios. As much as I was hoping that they'd rebuild and making Prey 2 that was always a longshot. As for Roundhouse, they've not been shut down, but folded into Zenimax Online. So at least they're not laying off the staff.
It's Tango that really has me livid. Closing them was just a pointless act of vandalism and I think will severely harm Xbox in the long run. In terms of both developer morale Xbox wide, as who will feel enthusiastic and safe to work on their game if they can get shut down even if they do good work? They're going to see a huge and well deserved talent Exodus before long mark my words. And player sentiment including my own will hit a real low. Which will lead to lower sales. And more closures etc...
If you asked me yesterday I'd have said Xbox was finally on the right track. Now I'd say they're circling the gutter.

Evil within was one of my favorite horror games ever. RIP to the company that brought me so much joy as a teenager. I hope all the employees of these studios can make it back on their feet. This is truly a sad day for gaming.

I've been loyal to Xbox since the 360. The failure of the XBOne didn't turn me away. This did.
It's almost impossible to defend this. The messaging is so different to Xbox's actions. The reward for making one of Xbox's best games in recent times is to shut down the studio. It doesn't make sense, and the silence coming out of Xbox is deafening.
Phil, Aaron, and Matt should all resign in disgrace.

When Microsoft acquired Bethesda, I was bummed at probably not getting a potential Evil Within 3 on PS. Now, no one gets it.

If I paid $100 for Redfall and got the season pass and then Xbox does this, I would be beyond upset and disappointed.
I did just that. I was hoping they were going to turn around Redfall like they had done in Fallout 76; I could see the potential of Redfall. I just put in for full refund of the Redfall game and pass. TBH, I play Redfall almost everyday and have playthroughs with every character offered and have been hungry for more content and looking forward to new updates. I only buy 1-2 games brand new and the rest on extremely good sales…

Interesting fact: Microsoft was very close to acquire square enix (which was called squaresoft back then) it almost went through back in late 90s but square called it off at the final minute imagine what situation square be in to today thank god that didn’t happen
I'm currently coming towards the end of my first year on a games development course. I'm very concerned that I've picked the wrong time to attempt a career change. What will the job market look like when I'm done with the 2nd year? Will I even be able to find a job in the industry?
I was a big supporter of Xbox at the beginning of this generation as a opposition to horrible corpo rat Jim Ryan, but now, I don't want to have anything to do with the brand. Time for Spencer to go.

This problem is not only in the gaming industry, it is everywhere. I am a music composer and there are two genres that I am very good at. The company that I work with would never put me on projects that I am good at... They throw me what is trending at the moment, and can't realize that people who made music that trends, put many years into crafting their specific talent, at the specific genre. This is everywhere - music, the film industry, games... People who are managing and making decisions do not realize how everything works, they are not creatives, so there is so much junk all over the place... If you are playing a commercial game and it is not fun, it is probably because the people who made it are good at something else.
Closing tango feels like a broken promise. Its like a statement on their attitude towards games.
What it says to me is Microsoft has no interest in growing new franchises, or funding artsy projects. Its all about the bottom line and zero risk.
The second switch 2 comes out i'm not even gonna give Microsoft a second look.
While Microsoft doesn't care about gaming or its employees, Nintendo doesn't care about that either (asian culture will cram all day if told of them and it's normal, workplace culture is probably horrible at nintentdo too) and they don't care about consumers. Breath of the wild didn't get a price drop until tears of the kingdom. And good luck trying to get a refund from either sony or nintendo. But yes nintendo exclusives shit all over microsft
Nobody will care next week because nobody will miss their games, shit studio that doesn’t make games that sell well, not a big deal.
Imagine a world where Avowed doesn't sell well enough to appease execs, (being tied to gamepass, where most xbox users won't buy it outright and xbox/pc exclusive), and Obsidian gets shutdown.
Some of these studios should work to buy their independence. Making good games isn't enough, clearly.
i'm more worried for studios like Ninja Theory and Double Fine. they could release a perfect 10 game and still get shutdown if there's no service or longevity tied to their games.
The nuclear meltdown online would be immense. Like whatever outrage we saw for the Helldivers situation and then the recent closures will be minuscule compared to what would happen if Obsidian is shut down.
@daRealB-Rex I agree, I don't think Xbox wants to or even can deal with that backlash without taking a major blow in community support. I'd argue there's no coming back from that.
Xbox really is starting to remind me of the harbinger of death, EA. Buys up studios, runs them to the ground from bad decisions on the executive level, then closes the studio. Pretty soon people will be talking about Xbox as if their the new EA if they continue down this path.
I'm surprised that Machine Games is still not dead. From Wolfenstein TNO to II to Young Blood, it's clear that the developers only read positive comments and ignore all the cons the players mention.

I’m gutted by this but I can’t imagine what those who’ve lost their jobs and those still working at Xbox feel. Honestly, I think I’d be thinking of a career change at this point. M$’s whole purpose for acquiring studios is to drain money out of the industry and pay artists less which will result in a worst gaming industry. THE REASON THEY PROBABLY CLOSED THOSE STUDIOS IS BECAUSE THEY PROBABLY HAD SOME HIGHLY-PAID PEOPLE AND THEY WANT TO REPLACE THEM WITH CHEAPER LABOR. There was no reason for them to close down Tango Softworks, they’re last project was highly acclaimed and well-received.
i see your point ,but japanese game devs are that low paying labour, compared to devs/artists in US , Japanese devs make laughably low salary (even those they still sell their games at US standard prices)

Yep pretty much. I was crazy excited for it just this morning, and now frankly I'm just considering taking a good long break from gaming entirely. I'm honestly finding shutting Tango down more distasteful than the start of the Xbox One generation. At least that was a plan of sorts if a bad one. This is just....wanton vandalism.

This generation is just making me realize that I should have bought/build a PC a long time ago. Why in the hell should I support Xbox/Microsoft when they don't even support their own studios? I know this problem isn't exclusive to just Microsoft but they seem to have the most hype built around all their newly acquired studios with all these grand ideas just for Microsoft to shut them down. Honestly speaking just for myself, this has been the most lackluster, disappointing generation of gaming that I can remember.

I was done with Xbox back in 2013. I never kidded myself that they were going to get better.
It certainly showed that they couldnt bring a game to market.
I think Halo 4 was the start of this downward trajectory. They just lost prime Bungie and the very first Halo game made by their brand new studio was mid at best, downright irredeemably bad at worst. They've never recovered from that. Their biggest IP being given to a new studio and it flops right out of the gate.
I've been an xbox guy since the 360 but I've seriously considered moving away from the platform and building a gaming pc for a while now. Decisions like this give me very little hope for the future of xbox

I honestly thought Hi Fi Rush was a turning point for Tango. A very different game for them when compared to their output years prior and personally I felt the game absolutely killed it. Sad to see that the series is most likely dead before even getting more of a chance.

343 didn't exactly come out clean. They were hit by layoffs months ago and even before that entirety of 343s management and higher ups were replaced. In fact I would also say most people would be happy if 343 were shutdown and the Halo license was handed to someone else
Meanwhile Playstation is licensing and publishing very unique games like Stellar Blade and Ronin even publishing smaller studio titles and making a large variety of games wouldn’t be surprised if they pick up some of these recently shafted Xbox studios tbh

Considering the majority of people who played it were on gamepass it’s likely that the game made a fraction of what it costed to make.
Hi-Fi Rush was a money sink from Xbox’s perspective. The game was already in the works when they bought Tango under Bethesda but it barely made any money due to being on game pass. There probably wasn’t enough sales & hours played on Gamepass to justify keeping the studio open.

I cannot genuinely believe how Phil Spencer has been kept on Xbox for this long. It can’t be a coincidence that ever since he became the head of Xbox, everything has been going to shit. I kinda like Phil Spencer, he seems like a person who genuinely likes gaming and interacting with the community, but wow, this (the closure of studios and many other dumb decisions made by Xbox) just shows the incompetence of his leadership and the other suits at Xbox.
