Thank you for the easy, step-by-step instructions. Recently my wife said she opened the door and the sunroof shade opened 1/2 way and would not close. With your instructions, I was able to get it to close again. But even after reprogramming it, if I open the shade 1/2 way, it will not close again unless I do the programming again. Any suggestions on why this is happening? The other two sunroof buttons are not working either. I'm about to search online to see what might be the cause.
@@Youthman the sunroof is not quite shut. If the shade motor thinks it's not fully shut it won't close but halfway. Your motor is probably bad for the sunroof due to a water leak

@@Youthman make sure you don't get an aftermarket motor. They have issues programming a lot of the time. Be sure to get an oem. Sunroof Doctor has them and they have the best price that I have seen
Hey man. Mine fully cycles after resetting it, but the moment I open it half way and try to close it, the issue repeats itself. Any idea on the issue? It’s a pain to have to reset it every single time I open the moonroof.
@@DirtyDave7 okay the shade stops halfway because the shade motor thinks that the glass is not fully closed. So most likely you have a bad sunroof motor due to the water leak
Is it necessary to have both motors working in order for either to work. Swapped shade motor with roof motor. Ran the initialization and went as shown in other video. The roof motor was burned up. After initialization the sunroof still doesn’t work but I only have the sun roof motor installed.
@@kevinpadgett2563 they both have to be hooked up, they don't necessarily have to operate. Generally the way I diagnose whether the sunroof motor is bad is if the shade works but the sunroof will not work at all. But both need to be plugged in
This procedure did work, but after i went to open it again it would only close halfway. My sunroof is also not working. I checked with a meter and have 12V for operation of slide but only 9V for operation of tilt and sunroof.
I have a question I have recently purchased a 2016 explorer with dual moon roofs just like this one in the video and I’m wondering is the rear (back moon roof) suppose to open like the glass slide and be fully open ???

I tested the motor with ground wire and it was moving fully back and half way as It was initially working or, is there another motor to move it from the half way to the full?? On the diagram showing only 2 motor. One for the glass and one motor works for the shade. The glass did not open at all but I don't care about that tho. Still need more settings???
@@grandpanero7284 If the shade motor works, but the glass doesn't then the glass motor is bad, and it's almost always due to the water leak caused by the sunroof drains. I have videos for both fixing the leak and replacing the motor.
Replaced the sunroof motor twice on our 2015 and it still won't function correctly. It moved up and down some but it won't open and close. I tried the reset several times. Any ideas?
@@mattress1982 track might be broken then. My next step would be to pull the glass, drop the motor and try to operate it manually and see if it moves freely or not
Hopefully you are still around to help here…I have a 2013 Explorer sunroof motor that burned out. Replaced the motor and tried calibrating. Wasn’t working then noticed the guide rails were uneven making the sunroof crooked. I removed the glass to take a closer look but seems like I need the motor to spin the opposite way to even then out…if that makes sense. Any ideas to try?
Did they get that way when you had the motor loose? If so, do this: Drop the motor a bit so the gear is disengaged from the cables. Then line up the guides. They will move independently when the gear isn't in place. Tighten the motor, and perform the initialization again. Hopefully the track itself isn't broken.
Just replaced the tracks on my 2012 f350. The sunroof will go all the way to the close position but won’t actually go back up to seal. Tried reprogramming but nothing.
After completing the initialization/reset, my shade fully opened and fully closed after reset. When I open it again after the reset, I can still only get it to close half way and my glass will not open or tilt. Anybody have any ideas?
The glass motor went bad. Most likely due to a water leak from the sunroof drains. And the shade won't close more than halfway because the glass is just shy of being fully closed
Generally if the shade moves but the glass doesn't, the motor is bad due to water intrusion from clogged sunroof drains. I have videos on how to repair all of that. And I'm sorry that UA-cam didn't notify me of your comments or I would have responded faster. Only reason I see them now is I went to the video manually and saw them.
This playlist was perfect in helping me replace my motors and stop the problem from happening again (snip the drain line exit). I bought the A-Premium off amazon, and although it fits and works for the slide, it won't tilt and therefore and it won't program. I think I recall the creator, or other, mentioning that MotorCraft (OEM: MM-1038) is a better motor that IS PROGRAMABLE. Any other brands you know of that can be used AND programmed? Thanks in advance
Someone commented here and claimed that they bought a motor from AutoZone I think it was, and even though it was supposedly an aftermarket motor it had the OEM sticker on it
It might, but a lot of the times on these if that's the case the motor has gone bad due to a water leak. I have a video on how to fix the water leak and how to replace the motor

The panorama and sunroof shades in my explorer are stuck open. I have the same button console. No matter how long I hold the button down nothing happens. I can hear a click in the sunroof area when I press the shade button but that's it
Please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but is the motor that controls this the same motor that controls the tilt of the sunroof? I asked because my sunroof is stuck Open and I can't close it no matter how many times I push the tilt button. But the shade can be programmed and it works fine. Is that common? Mine got stuck half way open, and stayed that way for several months before I finally looked up this video. I got it to close, and it performed exactly as described in the video all the way up until the very end. Can’t get it to fully function. It just goes back to being half open. I haven’t opened the glass since this problem began around a year ago. Because it was warm today I attempted to open it, and that isn’t opening either. So I think I have a much bigger problem
Motor might be bad. The sunroof drains get blocked and the water spills into the motor. It has to be replaced to fix it totally, assuming that's what is wrong.
Just put two new motors in my 2013. The sunroof moved as well as the sunscreen. Now the sunroof doesn’t work again and the sunscreen only goes passed the moon roof about 6 inches and stops. The reset procedure doesn’t work.
@@SealofPerfection one is aftermarket the other is factory. I got the sunroof to tilt a couple times but only in the reset procedure. Does it once and then won’t do it again. Until I try the cycle over.
@@jwfabworks3141 I've seen quite a few folks have trouble getting the aftermarket motors to initialize. Plus, factory and aftermarket is a bad combo as well. If you have the old factory motors, I'd put your new factory one in the sunroof glass spot, and the old one in for the shade, and see if the glass will initialize then. You don't even need to install the shade motor, just plug it in.
I’m going to pull it all back apart tomorrow and see what I can figure out. That sunscreen will close fully. Hit the button and it will stop half way. Hit it again and it slides about 6 inches passed the moonroof and stops. I may stop it there before I pull it apart then pull the motor out and try to manually open the screen all the way up.
I love the video series. One problem is that no matter how many times I reinitialize the shade it wont stick. After its done will open one touch half, one touch full. One touch close half and that's it. It will never close past half no matter what.

Sounds like the motor is bad. All the circuitry and "module" stuff is inside the motor. If it won't retain that initialization, its "memory" might be bad.

@@SealofPerfection Yes. that is why I was resetting it. The old motor was filled with water. I took the new one and sprayed T-9 waterproofing along the edges. Once it dries it creates a wax seal.
@@fogit4668 you need to clear the sunroof drains. That's where the water is coming from. And if it's an aftermarket motor, the programming is a little sketchy on those.
That means your sunroof motor is probably bad. I have a linked video in the description of how to repair the leak. The sunroof drains get stopped up and the water spills into the motor and kills it. I also have a video on how to replace the motor

Your sunroof motor has probably failed due to a water leak xaused by the sunroof drains being stopped up

Just try the pull/release/pull of the button from that point and see if you can "trick" it into doing the procedure.

There are two separate buttons, one for the shade and one for the sunroof. Usually the shade still works and the sunroof doesn't

Put some tape over the switch so nobody opens it again. It probably needs a motor due to water intrusion.

If the shade is hanging down, and you the the cloth power shade, then the shade itself is damage and likely will need to be replaced.

It is the same motor. Most likely your motor is bad due to a water leak and water got in the motor and killed it.

It is possible. However, water intrusion does kill the sunroof motor quite frequently on these. Does the shade still work?

Ive done this, it shuts all the way but then next time i go to do it I need to reset it all over again.
Motor might be going bad. All the circuitry and "programming" is inside of it.
@@SealofPerfection it started doing it after I took the fuses out to check them bc my glass wouldnt open. I probably messed something up lol
@@EDCExplained you most likely have a little bit of a water leak in the water is getting into the motor. That is very common

Have you replaced the motor? If not, you may need one
@@SealofPerfection Yes. that is why I was resetting it. The old motor was filled with water. I took the new one and sprayed T-9 waterproofing along the edges. Once it dries it creates a wax seal.
@@fogit4668 you need to clear the sunroof drains. That's where the water is coming from. And if it's an aftermarket motor, the programming is a little sketchy on those.
@@SealofPerfection I purchased a Motorcraft motor. still trying to get the front drains to open the rear are flowing really well.

Mine wont work :( it rained and water went thru it😢
That means your sunroof motor is probably bad. I have a linked video in the description of how to repair the leak. The sunroof drains get stopped up and the water spills into the motor and kills it.
