I was nervous the luster of owning a black bay would go away when i saw these seiko 5 came out, but there is enough design differences when compared "in the flesh" that even if they were the same price and brand (and material quality), I'd still go for the Black Bay. The devil is in the details indeed. Thanks for this video, mate.

I may be a bit late to the party for this video, but the Black Bay 36 going for $4,000 RETAIL here in 2024 is absurd to me. $2,000-$2,500 is about the right price point for this piece, but Tudor honestly seems to think that they’re Rolex these days. You can get a number of alternatives with the same 2824 movement for much cheaper. With Tudor’s unjustifiable prices these days, I’m perfectly happy sticking with my Seiko 5. I have the SBSA043 (the JDM version of the SRPE53) and it’s one hell of a watch for the money. The 4R36 is every bit as robust a movement as the 2824 but it’s almost 20x cheaper than the Black Bay. Seiko is definitely the clear winner here as far as value for money goes.

I have just been comparing these two myself. Your video is helpful. You can see they are very similar in style and layout. Incredible. I love the blue dial Tudor wow so good. The seiko blue is not as classic or timeless as the Tudor blue. The BIG question is: is the Tudor 10 times the value, worth, longevity, etc than the seiko??? Help. I need comments to help me decide. I love the Tudor but 10x the price? Maybe just barely I can see that? I will say this if it helps: If I get the Tudor it will be a piece that passes down to my sons. Yes I can pass the seiko down as well but let’s be honest in 40 years or 10 years the Tudor will have more prestige and it’s this that may tip the scales for me. But I’m on the fence about this. Should it matter to me the passing down of the watch and what brand it is?? I’ll be gone so I won’t care and I assume any watch from me will be a keepsake and something kept in a box somewhere. And the reason I say kept in a box is because we all know in 10, 20, 50 years mechanical watches will relegated into the category of VHS, beta max, hi-8, and a ton of other outdated gadgets and formats. Comments let me know. Thx

The Seiko is a fun watch and nothing more. No contest.! I have owned this Seiko and returned it for a refund very quickly, I purchased a BB58 blue and will soon purchase a BB36. Why because I want to hand down quality to my children but still enjoy the time pieces whilst I can. I can imagine them arguing over who gets which Tudor. Tudor has ETA! i say it again E T A movement, 38HR power reserve. the movement ETA 2824 cost $280 for replacement. then yet you are paying $2,700. can you justify the remaining $2,480? you pay 2,480 for sappire, solid links? and for the Tudor branding?
Where is... the Seiko SRPE has Robust IN-HOUSE MOVEMENT, 40HRS power reserve has Day/Date.. Seiko own hardlex crystal, decent and well built hollowed endlinks for $270. 4R36 calibre replacemnt cost $90.

If that Seiko had a sapphire crystal, solid end links, decent clasp, and 200M wr it would’ve been one of the best value props out there. Charge $500 and people would line up for them. I love Seiko but they’re always cutting corners. San Martin makes superior quality watches and sells them for $250. No reason that Seiko with their economies of scale can’t produce a top quality watch for $500.

Agree on all points. Great post. While I own this Seiko, I would have loved to have had an opportunity to purchase the version you describe. As it stands, I've added a saphire crystal and solid link after market bracelet. Even so, the WR still remains at 100m. I now have a little over $350 invested in the watch given it's original price and including the upgrades - which is still quite reasonable IMO. That is one of the advantages of the Seiko lines - the almost endless aftermarket ability to upgrade and or mod. In the meantime, if I need more water resistant, I simply switch to my Seiko turtle.
Having stated all that, I would be lying if I didn't admit I would much much more prefer the Tudor version compared here. But, given my lifestyle and current family & financial priorities, it is difficult for me to justify the price difference between the 2. No doubt the Tudor is beautiful and the finer luxery choice, but both are fantastic watches in their respective categories imo.

@@lowersaxon 7s26 of course is inferior to eta 2824, it's much older, no hacking or hand winding, but 4R36 is quite modern, at least more modern than 2824 in tudor. It have hacking and hand winding, also more power reserve. The thing is only regulation. I have SRE61 and it have +-5s daily so not that bad for 1/10 price of Tudor. 6R series form SEIKO eats that ETA for breakfast. By all means, that ETA is good, very reliable, but SEIKO with it's own movements aren't bad either. Todays market is quite broken. It's race between "in house" movements. We take care about swiss movements that are not ETA ( just like new ORIS 400) like it's some big event, but we tend to forget that japanese brands have their own "in house" movements for like always. Even budget brands like Orient. Maybe I'm wrong but comparing that watches by movements is missing the point. Unless Tudor brings their MT5402 to 36. That Tudor was on my buying list, but with recent price hike it's quite unreasonable. With that kind of money I could rather look at Aqua Terra territory.

And yet I prefer the Seiko 5 for number of different reasons 😂 Also, you've seen them right, they are very much in the same category function wise. A price that a company determines based on nothing, means less than nothing. If there are two bicycles for example, made to perform the simular tasks. One cost 200 and the other 5000, and the $200 one actually has number of merits in its favor, they are certainly comparable to say the least.
