I have no idea how many times I've watched it. It seemed to epitomize their relationship, including the part when Ginger flubbed the beginning of the script. Fred simply took her hand, held it close to his chest and said, "Oh boy, my baby".
I love how fred seems so modest about it, kind of blushing and looking a bit shy while ginger is just soaking all the applause in and enjoying every second
Watching this clip - I am totally mesmerized by the insinuation of the dance Mr. Astaire made during his entrance it was pure elegance in motion. I thoroughly love to see him move, and what a delight to see the amazing Ginger Rogers take his side again.
I've watched this ten times since I found it! It's extraordinary! Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers so vital, so gorgeous and so talented! Thank you for posting!
That impromptu little dance that Fred and Ginger did together at the beginning was Ginger's idea and according to her Fred thought it would be too corny, but Ginger told him," Come on. Let's give the folks a thrill" and so they danced. It was a great unplanned moment.
They make their entrance (practiced no doubt) and safely make the podium, when she flubs reading the cue cards! Ever full of grace, Fred steps up quickly and covers for her ... a lifetime of life lessons in only a flash: care for your partner, your glory is her, standing beside you. And then, seeing her through the brief misstep, he passes the lead back to her.
in an interview with ginger, she explains how she had asked fred to do a small dance when they came out. he declined,at first, but agree at the last moment, probably not wanting to dissappoint her,and the world,as well. so, he said to giger, let's do it. they entered, separately, walked toward each other, and fred astaire choreographed a 20 second dance which caught the american public unprepared, totally charmed ginger rogers, and brought down the house. watching it now,at age 75, still brings tears and joy to me,as if seeing it when it spontaneously took place, as it did to bob hope, who had to pay his own tribute to them both. seeing ginger react with such pleasure, unexpectedly feeling the response of this live audience of hollywood royalty, is an indescribable joy. it suddenly brought alive these two consummate artists and the times they were a part of,times of depression, untold hardship and unrelenting suffering, balanced, even in the smallest way, by fred astaire and ginger rogers. it's hard to separate the love from the gratitude the american people will always feel for these two rarities. they gave all and more, and asked for nothing in return. they didn't have to ask.
I've been looking for this clip for years. Thank you so much for posting it as this is one of my favorite Oscar moments. The look of surprise on Ginger's face and the way her arm linked into his just thrill me. Bless them both - they brought us so many indelible memories.
Thanks Fred and Ginger. He could dance like nobody. A true genius on the floor. She was beautiful and used to date Howard Hughes. Both legends! Thank you Fred and Ginger.
I think out of all of Fred's subsequent dance partners I always go back to Ginger because she just looked so good with him. Although some of his later partners might have had stronger backgrounds in Dance, Ginger had tremendous personal charisma and a special undeniable chemistry with Fred which made dancing with him look like an absolute blast. She was also a very versatile actress. seemed to and made dancing with him
I’m reading Lucille Ball’s autobiography, in which she describes the role Ginger Rogers’ mother played in Lucy’s life, as a mentor. Lucy also dishes on Fred and Ginger’s working relationship. He was a perfectionist and task master. Ginger was a good partner for him because she copied his style - mirrored him - and to help boost his appeal among female fans, on screen she would gaze adoringly at him.
I would also say that I totally agree!! I wish we still had movies like this and just or more importantly; performers, amazing dancers, amazing actors who work their tails off and music you just lose yourself into and Stunning, Wonderful, Class - I too miss it!!!
What a delightful entrance Ginger and Fred made....Ginger's idea according to her autobiography. It was wonderful that they could bask in such well deserved applause from their peers. Thanks for sharing this rare footage. I've been looking for it for years.
What a delightful way to start the morning! Fred and Ginger, of course, were superb; and Bob Hope was right on top of it with his ad-libs. Gosh, I miss these folks.
I met Ginger along with James Mason and Fay Kanin in 1983 at the Dallas premier of the restored George Cukor film, "A Star is Born". She was gorgeous and delightful. Fred and Ginger still bring joy to countless fans, old and new, around the world. They were true American treasures.
At Last!! What a wonderful 'classic' moment. Listen to the ROAR of that crowd. And how about Candice Bergen all the way down the aisle to accept only to have to turn around when she sees Claude onstage. LOL! She told me years later she thought Claude was still in the press room.
Yes, they were friends (and were sitting next to each other in the audience). She had just acted in his film Vivre Pour Vivre, which would released later in 1967.
You cannot see this here but Fred actually grabbed Ginger's hand immediately and nuzzled it gently when they went to the side of the stage as the second gentleman accepted his award. It's really a pity this angle doesn't cover it, it's so cute and tender and like that's just how they naturally were. :) ♡
I wish they could have made another movie together after The Barkleys of Broadway. It wouldn't have had to be a dance movie, either. I love seeing them together. They could have made a comedy and dropped in few Easter eggs from past movies for fun.
EVERY SINGLE mentioned nominated film is considered a CLASSIC today! How many of today's nominated pictures would be (even vagely) remembered a few years later?
My grandfather loved Fred. He would say that he practised so much till his feet would bleed. We'll never see a dancer like him ever agree. A true craftsman. Thank you. When you danced on the wall it was magical !
...true entertainers originate from live theater, not the manufactured version we've had over the last 30 years or so; thank you Fred, thank you Ginger.
AWW how refreshing to see the best dancing duo in Hollywood. I see Fred is wearing his famous "white tie and Tails" lol and Ginger with her sequent dresses!
Obviously Fred Astaire knew what he was going to do...but the fact that Ginger Rogers didn't, and managed not to land flat on her butt and look AMAZING dancing with him? That's true talent!!!!
Like Frank Sinatra said in his narration for "That's Entertainment" you can wait around, but you'll never see the likes of these two again. Astaire, in a series of quick dance movements, re-creates the charm of ten years of RKO and MGM films with Rogers.
I agree. I'm sure at least half the audience was on their feet for this (today they stand for ANYTHING). Surprisingly the camera never shows the audience reaction, instead lingering on Fred & Ginger who appear overwhelmed with the attention. True, they were getting older. But they were still young enough for one to hope they would find a vehicle to reunite in. No one, not even they, knew this would be their final 'dance' together for the camera.
JerseySurvivor If Astaire and Rogers were presenting an Oscar to Robert Bolt for A Man For All Seasons, made in 66, this must have been the 67 Oscar ceremony. Astaire was about to film his last musical show in 68 with Barrie Chase and Coppola's Finian's Rainbow, released the same year. Consequently, Fred was still very limber as a dancer; he was also dancing on Hollywood Palace shows during that time period.
The amazing part was almost everything you see there was ad-lib up until the reading of the awards! As a matter of fact Ginger asked Fred, and he only agreed a few minutes before they went on air!
Fred called Ginger "my bsby" this is 34 yrs since their first dance together. But I think she was only about 18 or 19 when they first met. She was just a "baby" After all these years I see that little dance together and always get a little thrill because thwy still had it! ❤ I simply love these two. And honestly no one can wear a top hat, white tie and tails like Fred. ❤🎩
This was 34 years since their first dance on film. They had dated in New York City from the fall of October 1930 until Ginger left for Hollywood in the summer of 1931.
Wow what a difference from today. Sun vs Dark. Class vs Vulgar. Talent vs No Talent. Good vs Evil. Good people vs POS. Politeness vs Rudeness. Energetic vs Boring. Amazing. Thanks to You tube. We can see past Greatness to today Worthlessness.
I love this clip. I watch it a lot because it is quite joyful. I notice one thing every time - Fred seems to be saying something to Ginger (perhaps “Let’s do a little dance”?) but Ginger seems absorbed in soaking up the applause that she doesn’t hear him. Thus, she is completely surprised. I always think that if she were listening or heard him this lovely moment would have been longer.

Both of them were so adorable with such class !!!!!😊
Ginger Rogers looks stunning!! Beautiful lady
At Last!! What a wonderful 'classic' moment. Listen to the ROAR of that crowd. And how about Candice Bergen all the way down the aisle to accept only to have to turn around when she sees Claude onstage. LOL! She told me years later she thought Claude was still in the press room.
that's enough awkwardness for a lifetime!
Yes, they were friends (and were sitting next to each other in the audience). She had just acted in his film Vivre Pour Vivre, which would released later in 1967.
Oscars when it was all class!
You cannot see this here but Fred actually grabbed Ginger's hand immediately and nuzzled it gently when they went to the side of the stage as the second gentleman accepted his award.
It's really a pity this angle doesn't cover it, it's so cute and tender and like that's just how they naturally were. :) ♡
gill426 where can I watch this from a different angle?
@@kyleleslie236 That's a very good question, I haven't found the video yet. I only have two gifs in which you can see it.
gill426 I saw that gif before. I wish we can watch the video of it. :)
You will never see class like this coming from that industry ever again. What a moment!
They both are legends, which is we can’t find any stars like them at present days.
Yes I cried. I miss the era of "classical" artists.
Wow I wish I could have met these two. Class, decorum, grace and style!
They are completely adorable. Thank you so much for posting this.
Thank you every so much for this wonderful clip of Ginger and Fred and together again. How delightful!!!
Fred and Ginger lok so happy just to be together! The little dance was lovely!
When the Oscar's still had class ! Not like the shock-fest we now have ....
I just cried at that whole thing.
Me too, couldn't help
My grandfather loved Fred. He would say that he practised so much till his feet would bleed.
We'll never see a dancer like him ever agree.
A true craftsman.
Thank you. When you danced on the wall it was magical !
It was the girls whose feet bled, but all chorines expect that. Fred said some of his ladies cried too, but Ginger- never.
What a wonderful treat thank you so much
...true entertainers originate from live theater, not the manufactured version we've had over the last 30 years or so; thank you Fred, thank you Ginger.
Fred and Ginger. People who actually had talent. Unlike Hollywood actors nowadays.
This is awesome! Very sweet! Glad to see this clip in such great condition!
We have NO "stars like Bob, Fred and Ginger! Thank god we have all this footage!!!
I agree 100% ... Magical..
I'm sure they're dancing through the stars still entertaining 💖
AWW how refreshing to see the best dancing duo in Hollywood. I see Fred is wearing his famous "white tie and Tails" lol and Ginger with her sequent dresses!
I think Ginger had been waiting for this way too long
He moves elegantly while standing still. Is there any greater praise?
Fred and Ginger were just fantastic, when I was a young girl, used to love them...
+mary rawson But you don't anymore?
Rafael Storm
Well I suppose I have not watched any of their films for years, but Yes, still think they were great dancers..
Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels.
Wow! You think that one all up by yourself? Only we've heard it a million freaking times...
JonnyContagious
and now you've heard it a million and one freakin' times. Lighten up, buttercup.
Jim Michaud Can't you think of anything original to say, Jim-Jim-Assrim?
+JonnyContagious It may not be original but it's sure quotable.
Jim Michaud
I remember when "THE OSCARS" were everything! Class...
He acts all suave as hell, and Ginger is just laughing her ass off, I love these two!
The amazing part was almost everything you see there was ad-lib up until the reading of the awards! As a matter of fact Ginger asked Fred, and he only agreed a few minutes before they went on air!
Claude Lelouch said in French that the other guy, Pierre, deserved the Oscar as much as he did. Very classy.
So cute at 00:40 when Ginger looks at the audience applauding them and seems to say "aw, look at this"
Fred called Ginger "my bsby" this is 34 yrs since their first dance together. But I think she was only about 18 or 19 when they first met. She was just a "baby"
After all these years I see that little dance together and always get a little thrill because thwy still had it! ❤
I simply love these two.
And honestly no one can wear a top hat, white tie and tails like Fred. ❤🎩
This was 34 years since their first dance on film. They had dated in New York City from the fall of October 1930 until Ginger left for Hollywood in the summer of 1931.
my favorite duo !
The unforgetable Ginger rogers and fred Astaire...Ginger gave him class humor and authenticity
They were just so HAPPY to be up there togetherd
Wow what a difference from today. Sun vs Dark. Class vs Vulgar. Talent vs No Talent. Good vs Evil. Good people vs POS. Politeness vs Rudeness. Energetic vs Boring. Amazing. Thanks to You tube. We can see past Greatness to today Worthlessness.
Pure magic ......... Now listen up kids, this is what true talent looked like ! Xxxx
Such a good looking and genuine duo. Love this ❤️
The most magical dazzling dance couple EVER❗🎯💯
I love this clip. I watch it a lot because it is quite joyful. I notice one thing every time - Fred seems to be saying something to Ginger (perhaps “Let’s do a little dance”?) but Ginger seems absorbed in soaking up the applause that she doesn’t hear him. Thus, she is completely surprised. I always think that if she were listening or heard him this lovely moment would have been longer.
I love it too😊😊💘💘 and her dress is just beautiful. Love it when Bob Hope dances too.
GINGER ROGERS WAS STILL PRETTY IN THE 60'S AS AN OLDER WOMEN SHE REALLY AGED WELL
Thanks for posting this !
