This video is split into two parts, first our trip to Lewis and Harris (with no dialogue), followed by a chat about our journey and tips for visiting the islands yourself.
➤ JUMP AHEAD TO OUR LEWIS & HARRIS TRAVEL INFO 27:10
Lewis and Harris (referred to as two islands but in fact just one landmass) make up the northernmost part of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles. We spent a week there in June, the final part of a 2.5 week camping road trip through the islands.
In this film we explore the amazing white sand beaches of Harris, follow scenic routes to Huisinis and around the Golden Road, marvel at the dramatic coastline around the Uig area, and check out the Callanish Standing Stones (older than Stonehenge!) and thatched blackhouses at Gearrannan, plus lots more!
To plan your own trip to Lewis and Harris, check out our accompanying travel guide - www.goingthewholehogg.com/bes... and be sure to stick around for the second half of our film where we share lots of travel tips and talk more about the places featured in the film.
Happy Travels!

The final part of our Outer Hebrides series 🎉! Lewis and Harris has beautiful beaches galore, dramatic coastline, and some pretty special historical sites (like the 5000 year old Callanish Standing Stones 🤯). If you've been inspired to visit the Western Isles yourself, let us know in the comments which of the islands you'd like to visit most and why! And don't forget, you can plan your perfect trip using our detailed guides over on the blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/best-things-to-do-on-lewis-and-harris/ Cheers! Kim & Del
This brought back memories of childhood as I holidayed here in the very early 60’s, in a rural village called Tolsta Chaolish when I was 5 or so. We kids were feral then 😂. It was all very rural and remote. Google maps shows the house my sister built is still there, plus Old Annie’s Place also known as the post office, and the home of my sisters mother-in-law is also still there though modernized. Memories. Not all good but Lewis is stunning. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. 🥰
Can just imagine what life was like here in the 60s… certainly a great place to be a kid. Happy we could help stimulate those memories 🙂
It's incredible how tropical those beaches look on the first bit. Then to see you with jackets on...
Haha, yeah looks can be deceiving!
This is absolutely brilliant. Love the way this has been filmed and documented.
Appreciate it, thank you very much 😃
This is too cool for words; you do beautiful work.
Thank you!
A great read for me was ofan island named Raasay ,in the Hebrides about the Rona Lighthouse keeper, Calum Macleod , who , by himself , over the years , built his very own road , The island is extraordinary too , Hebrides produces some extraordinary humans , ❤❤❤nz
Absolutely, we love Raasay, and the story of ‘Calum’s Road’ is such an interesting and inspirational one 👍
So ein schöner Film. In dieser Zeit ist es schön, das auch andere Menschen die Natur so genießen können. Sehr stimmungsvoll .!
Ich war an diesen Plätzen vor 23 Jahren mit meiner Familie. Mein former brother in low was a stonemason und a scottsman. Ihr habt es ganz toll gemacht, ein toller Film ...Respect!!!
Thanks Uwe! As someone who’s visited these places, it’s great to know how much you appreciated our film. Thanks again 😃
I'm about to head out there as I've a free month.. One man and his Caddy van:) This video and photography work is Gorgeous.
Thanks a lot, much appreciated! Heading out for a month? Great! A little bit jealous. Have a brilliant time 😃
This is amazing - great videography and the most comprehensive guide - keep up the great work!
Much appreciated, thanks!
Beautiful film, like a meditation. I’m finally visiting Lewis this summer 🙏🏻
Thank you! Hope you have a wonderful time when you visit
So glad to have found your magical youtube site. I just started reading Peter May's Lewis trilogy and wanted to know about the island setting. Your filming is so evocative and I love your generous sharing of advice.
Thank you, glad to have brought added context to your reading. I haven't heard of those books but will look them up!
Such cinematic sound and footage. I feel like watching movie every time...
That’s really great to hear. Thanks a lot 😃
So relaxing and beautiful! Also, I'm learning how to say Scottish place names by listening to you. I'm so amazed by how blue-green and clear the water is and how white the sand.
Enjoyable and educational, that's what I like to hear! Scottish place names can be impossible for us too at times, especially if it's a Gaelic name. I think we have pronounced everywhere correctly in this though. Yeah, the beaches in the Outer Hebrides are unbelievably beautiful, if only the water was warm!
I was on the Islands the first week in July went to the Blackhouses, Callanish and Uig too all fantastic your reviews are outstanding as usual. The weather was pretty bad when here as well but did nothing to stop me from loving it just the same will definitely be back.
Hi Gordon, thanks for sharing your experience. We’d heard the summer was pretty bad weather wise after we left but as you say, just got to go with it, and it doesn’t stop you wanting to go back. Thanks for watching 😃
Another superb video which is so relaxing to watch, it was over too quickly! We had recently returned from a trip to Skye, Harris and Lewis and briefly, Wester Ross at the end of September. Harris and Lewis has left a lasting impression on me with its breath taking scenery, so it was great to see yourselves visiting places we'd just been to. The weather was mixed but didn't distract from the beauty of the place. We most certainly will return as 5 nights was just not enough. I'm now looking forward to your Skye video. Thank you both.
Hi guys ! I saw you're video and i from France, i think i gonna plan to come here this summer. I'll read your website when i needed. And i think your video is very informative. Thank you so much.
Hi Emilie, thanks! Glad you appreciate it. Hope you have a great time in Scotland 🏴! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😃
My home sweet home!
Lucky you! 😃
Have been binging some of your videos recently, and I must say, the cinematography is incredible, and the story telling you portray just through the sounds, music and video is unreal. Given me lots of inspiration for my own content! Hope you manage to visit Carlottas at some point ;)
Hey Zac, thanks very much! Appreciate that a lot. We did think about stopping in at Carlottas on our way south but the weather was bad and the tiredness from 2 weeks on sky had kicked in. We’ll get there though. Hope you’re doing well 🙂
Wow Brilliantly shot and BIG a thanks for sharing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks, much appreciated! Thank you for watching and leaving a great comment 😃
I think filming the tips of the Callanish Stones was a subtly masterful touch. We were there just last month (we stayed in a pod in Mangersta) and it was lovely returning with your film.
Thanks, Tom! The detail in the stones is wonderful, worth showing close up and glad you appreciated these scenes. We liked the idea of revealing the overall view of the stones gradually, from individual to the whole collection. Mangersta is lovely, bet that was great staying in a pod there!
Can't believe how detailed and informative your videos are. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching and for the appreciation 😃
Thank you once again for another soothing video. I really enjoyed, and needed this diversion.
You are very welcome Gene, thanks for watching and for letting us know you enjoyed it. Happy to hear it described as ‘soothing’ and glad that it was a much needed diversion. Thanks again 🙂
Loved this, I've said it before but they are always so relaxing
Thank you, glad you continue to think so!
Next on our list 💪💪💪💪
Sounds great 👍
Wonderful stuff 👍👍
Thanks very much Keith 😃
I loved this series. Plans!!!
Glad to hear it! Enjoy when the time comes!

* The greatest Nature-Recording videographer ever who has been unsurpassed till the present
* The greatest visual beauty
*The silent eloquence of the creator trying to convey something in the video
* Humanitarianism in the dim hut with subtle ambience
* Long meditation ㅡ Silent dialogues between nature and human
* Kim illuminates the wildness of nature with her complete quietness of whispering to every subscriber ( including me ) .

Wow! What an utterly amazing assessment and appraisal… lost for words. Thank you so much for this 🙏

Alto impacto a los sentidos!!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it 😃
Lovely film. Great job.
Thank you very much!
Another great video. Keep them coming. Please.
Thanks, George! Will do 😃
Outstanding and truly inspirational. The photography is beautiful and meditative. I now really want to go there next summer! Your commentary, as ever, is engaging and fun. (Oh.. I do worry that newbies to the Channel will think that they're going to get an hour of scenery and more scenery, not realising that halfway through will be this opportunity to meet you in such an enjoyable and personable way. I wonder if the title really needs the addition of... 'we tell you all about the trip in the second half!'..? I worry that people just watch a bit then go away, not realising that there's this great bit yet to come. For me, both the trip video and the commentary are equally good, but for very different reasons. Anyway... a great job... thank you both!
Thanks for your thoughtful feedback as always! When I read this back to Del he said he'd also been wondering about that recently. Maybe it's something we need to mention more obviously in the title or flash up at the start of the film or something 🤔 I hope you can visit next year! You won't be disappointed 😃
Loved seeing the Hebrides and I hope to see it for myself one day. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it and that you get to visit some day 🙂
Very good cinematography, really well put together. Thank you
Thanks for watching and for appreciating our work!
I really enjoyed the whole Outer Hebrides series. This last may have been my favorite. I could have watched the overhead view of Garry beach with the inky brown stream spilling into the emerald water for an hour. Thank you!
Thank you Kate, that’s really wonderful to hear. Yeah, those views down on Garry Beach were amazing, especially the mixing of the two waters like that. Thanks again!
Superb thank you, heading there soon
You’re welcome Paul, thank you. Have a great time 🙂
Hey friends!! You’ve been on my mind recently and wanted to check in on your channel to get updated on your whereabouts! I really enjoyed this slow, cinematic TV (a feast on the eyes!), coupled with your value-packed commentary! Keep up the great work. You are both very talented ❤ xx Tania
Aww, thanks Tania! And that was spooky timing as I was just thinking about you guys too! We finally got round to buying an SSD after Adam recommended one for editing and I started using it yesterday to work on editing the next film. Loving it so far! Very jealous of your Dolomites adventures (complete with doggo!!) but we can't complain with the fantastic trips around Scotland we've had this year ⛺😃 Kim x
So peaceful and beautifully filmed. You appear to be using a drone a lot more these days which pleases me. Looking at your post about what’s in your camera bag this is really out of date. Please can you update with your latest gear as it must have changed significantly. All the best. Keep it them coming.
Thanks, Steven! Yeah, drone use usually depends on how often we can charge batteries. On this trip we could charge in the car while driving, and we bought a fourth battery as well. Our camera gear for this specific trip is linked in the video description. These days we have a DJI Air 2s instead of the Mavic Air, the Sony camera and lenses remain the same as described in the blog post. We need to find the time to update the blog post with any changed gear, it's on a long list!
Brilliant! Thank you. We’re going to spend a fortnight in the Hebrides next year. These videos and the website are invaluable. 😊
Glad to hear it, you'll have a great time I'm sure! 2 weeks is a good amount of time to not feel rushed.
Followed your advice today on Rheningdale, absolutely fantastic, and only saw three other people all day. A brilliant steer
Delighted to hear it Paul. Glad you enjoyed it and that we could be of help 😃
i AM impressed! So wonderful views, captures and sounds!
Love your film - Subscribed to your channel
That’s great! So glad you appreciated it! Thanks very much for subscribing 😃
Wow !!! Thank you
You’re welcome John, thank you!
Hey, you tell him misses, callanish stones have more information, even though its still a mystery to us, im from aird point, !! I realise now, how lucky I was to b born there, mind you, runnin about in your wellies, is no as glam as the folk goin over in a chopper n settin down in the stornoway for dinner!!, brilliant n beautiful, I was transported home, for a wee while there!, ,thank you from Edinburgh x
You’re very welcome, really glad to know it had that effect. Thanks for the appreciation! 😃
Stunning, love your videos reminds us so much of our Hebrides trip
Thanks! Nice, glad to hear it, bet you had a great time there too : )
Some of the earliest finds , of The Stones of Standing , have been found , on the Golan Heights , in Israel . .this is interesting indeed . ❤we have a Forrest here in nz , on the Hokianga , which has walls of stone , not carved by hand , that predate Maori,. We also have caves , at Taupo Bay, with remains of humans who had elongated skulls, pre maori , hmm .
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. The elongated skulls sound very curious…
Really enjoyed your series. Keep up the good work. You take me to places l want to be.
Thanks David, very much appreciated.
looks calm and beautiful
Very much so, thanks 😃
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Great work guys. A hive of information for anyone wanting to visit. Shame about the adverse weather but it added something to the film. 👍👍👍
Cheers, Graham! Yeah, you've got to expect a bit of wind and rain and just appreciate the different atmosphere you get with it. Pretty lucky to have had 10~ish days of sun and perfect camping weather prior!
Thanks
Thanks so much, we really appreciate it!
Dear Kim and Del, Thank you for such a beautiful and well produced film/video. I liked the pacing particularly. Very evocative. Just what I needed, and clarifies that I want to move there asap! I'm seriously thinking about it. Much appreciated, Kennedy.
Thanks, Kennedy! I can definitely understand that feeling. Hope it all works out well if you take the plunge and decide to make the move! Cheers, Kim
@@GoingTheWholeHogg Dear Kim thanks so much, yes it's all very inspirational! Your other Outer Hebrides and worldwide videos are pretty damn good too! If/when I manage to move, you'd be very welcome to stay. I'll update you when i know more. Thanks so much again, Kennedy (ps I'm listening to a lot of Julie Fowlis music, and have just started the BBC Alba 'Speak Gaelic'!)
Beautiful film, as always! I visited these islands in 2016 but now I really need to go back! ^^'
As another cultural/archaeological visit, I really recommend Dun Carloway broch. It's free and not far from the Callanish standing stones.
Oh nice, we've never been there! Seen the sign though, we'll need to make the effort to visit next time. Feels like there's always 'a next time' with the Outer Hebrides, just keeps drawing us back! I'm sure you can relate 😃
@@GoingTheWholeHogg exactly! There are always so many things to see and do ^^
And in terms of broch, the very best one is Mousa, in Shetland, if you want to go North before returning West ;)
A magnificent video. But is it really about Lewis and Harris? Or is it about ... drivers and cars? Car ferries, roads, vans, scenic drives, stop off places, viewpoints, car parks, lovely beaches that are only accessible by "your vehicle" ... it's all ... cars cars cars.
Well, thanks for your appraisal. It is a journey through Lewis and Harris, so in that sense it is about Lewis and Harris. We journeyed by car and ferry, as many people do, so it inevitably focuses on these aspects. The rest we’ll leave to your own interpretation 🙂
somewhat random question. are there any laws in scotland, either now or in the near future, prohibiting old cars to be driven "to save the planet" or something similar? I`m looking to live in a sane place with my old Lada.
Hmm, not totally sure to be honest, Del says there definitely are regulations for older vehicles, but don't know the specifics. And if you're trying to import an old vehicle I think there's a lot of hoops to jump through (based on some quick research I did when we were considering driving an UAZ Buhanka back from Georgia!).
@@GoingTheWholeHogg ah i see, thanks for the answer. I thought so too. Guess I'll stay in Armenia lol
Yeah, definitely more Lada mechanics there too 😅
Try Siberia. Sanest you could ever imagine
So how long should I spend in Lewis and Harris when I am there during my tour of Scotland?
Spend as long as you can! Minimum 5 days ideally, but more if you can! You can read more about the best things to see and do in our guide and see what appeals to you - www.goingthewholehogg.com/best-things-to-do-on-lewis-and-harris/ Have a great time when it comes! Kim
Did you have a chance to ask the locals why in the hell they consider it two islands when it's clearly just one??
I think it's because the two regions are separated by mountains and prior to the road being built, people would have journeyed by boat to get from one to the other, making it feel like two distinct islands.
U guys going on holiday again soon?
Working through our backlog of films to edit and guides to write up for now!
Hi did you film it with you dsrl camera?
We filmed it with our mirrorless Sony A7iii camera, plus a DJI Air 2s drone
@@GoingTheWholeHogg thank you 😊
@@GoingTheWholeHogg do you have any videos you have done with your dsrl?
@@what-I-enjoy-doing yeah, if you scroll through our videos, everything from the Oman videos backwards was shot with our canon DSLR (plus a GoPro).
