I saw Tull on this 1970 tour when they played at The Ohio Theater in Columbus, OH. Their latest album had been 'Benefit'. Ian Anderson kept grabbing his crotch; about the 5th time, a woman in the stage right balcony screamed in excitement. Anderson did a balletic leap onto the grand piano, dramatically shaded his eyes with his hand to peer at her, and she screeched again. Ian turned to the front saying: "It appears that we are now rock stars of the first order...we may therefore grab our balls whenever we wish!" He did another jete to the stage and went on with the tune!! I will never forget; I have given his exact words. Black Sabbath opened for Tull that night and did 'Paranoid' and others from that album. Best show I've ever seen, and I wasn't even high!
I saw tull perform live in 1969 and it was a mind altering experience. one of the best bands ever. not just rock but a nod to the relevance of classical music in rock. good stuff maynard!
Loved the song, but the commercial was the icing. I worked for Western Electric years ago, before the phone companies were divested. One of the best companies I have ever worked for. ;)
Glenn Cornick on bass, Clive Bunker on drums, Martin Barre on guitar. At least that was the personnel on the original cut on the album "Stand Up" made in 1969.
Haven't seen this before!! At first I thought it wasn't live..but it seems it is!!! Incredible. These are all so precious, old recordings..Thanks a million
this is the original airing, unedited. ..however the tv people might have deleted the bass solo if there was any in this version due to time constraints.
I play the flute and i was a fan of him. But he is not a good player. He put the fingers in any place. Playing dirty is more easy than playing clean. I would show you.

excellent video for one that's over 40 years old and I must laugh at the at&t advert at the end , for the simple fact the younger generations of the last 10 years wouldn't know what an " operator " is , everything is all recordings!!! nice to remember what life was like so many years ago, cheers!
You're so right. I can't find a complete and visible version of Glenn's masterpiece in the internet. Maybe someone did not want to be No. 2 in the band for a change?
This piece is a flute dance that any non mad crazy flutist can play in calm. The impression you have is that this is a very tough flute song, for us who were 15th years old in that era
@evandrake131 when I can get some time to clean it up, I will post the Santana song also. Unable to upload right now, ...computer broke. Glad you enjoy my videos!
@@Flumphinator Lol, I'm not talking of the band members. The guys who shot the video back them, it was tongue in cheek kidding Lol Ian is very much alive : )
Sounds like a live/studio hybrid. Ian's solo (and primary flute) is live ~ but the harmony flute definitely isn't (you can see that Martin ISN'T playing it), and the drums sound like the studio, as well. Too bad they cut out that bass solo! it would've been obvious whether that was live or not. (Cornick does have an amp behind him.....) Sweet footage, in any case....I haven't seen this before. Wild that some of you remember it from when it was first aired!
Hmm, rewatching this it's inconclusive if Martin is playing the harmony flute, since you don't see him. And immediately after, does look like he's putting something down (could be a flute) before grabbing his pick again. Glenn's bass notes after the missing solo sound live, too. Maybe this is fully live after all....
... and pirates "rob"! - because the announcer says: Ian Anderson is the composer! It did not compose it! - it only processed it, used it, it has been revised! But it is very beautiful and "classically" - enjoyable!
the only think I don't like is they skipped the bass solo...I'm a bass player and that was my fave part of the song...I should say the edited it out..not skipped other then that this is great!

This seems to be "semi-live". The flute part is live but the accompaniment by the band sounds exactly like what's on the record. And Clive Bunker's hands don't match up with the music. The second flute after Glenn Cornick's omitted solo could have been Martin Barre, he played flute as well.

I just love Glenn's finger style on that bass.
Me too. It’s one of the best bass compositions in rock.
RIP Glenn Cornick (1947-2014)
Its like he's possessed by some familiar ancient flutist spirit from late 1600's
I always loved this song, found the old Bell ad amusing.
This is gold, why hasn't this been around on youtube for longer?
Thanks for uploading!

At 2:28, shot of Glenn Cornick playing his bass with a cord dangling. The tell of a live recording and not just strumming along.
He of the crazy eyes plays a mean flute!

What a treat to watch this gem! Thanks for sharing.
Esta banda es de lo mejor que escucharon mis oidos!!!!!!
Indimenticabile
Ian Anderson playing the flute is awesome. That AT&T commercial at the end was almost as cool.

Awesome ! thanks for sharing.
Tremendous. Thanks for posting such a rarity
Thanks for the video
What a shame! They cut out Glenn Cornick bass solo, that is infinitely lame.
i think it is perhaps for air time reasons, like most of 70's music videos.

WTF. they edited out the brilliant solo by Glenn Cornick! Didn't anybody notice?
Je to
I did and am appalled. Why would anyone disfigure such a great song?

Why did they skip Glen Cornick's bass solo!? I've is one of my favorites!
Good question.
Maybe for time constraints. I think this is all lip-syncing anyway.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE SONG IS MISSING. WHO EVER DID THIS. I WILL FIND YOU.
There all dead now !! Lol
