Jethro Tull was formed in the late 60's and released their debut album This Was in 1968. Led by charismatic frontman Ian Anderson, they have been touring and recording almost constantly ever since, have registered no.1 albums on both sides of the Atlantic, achieved a succession of gold and platinum discs and won a Grammy award. They remain a massive live draw wherever they play around the world.
In 1970 Jethro Tull played the Isle Of Wight Festival in front of 600,000 people. Earlier that year they had released their third album, Benefit, which had seen the introduction of a full time keyboard player to the band's line up. The set was drawn from across the three albums with popular tracks such as My Sunday Feeling, Dharma For One, Bourée and Nothing Is Easy and also featured My God, a track that would appear on the following year's classic album Aqualung, probably their most famous release.
Nothing Is Easy is a true concert film, combining the classic performances from the festival with a new interview with Ian Anderson, specially shot for the film, and with backstage footage and original interviews from 1970 with Isle of Wight residents and fans attending the festival.

13.7 Billions years. The universe is 13.7 Billion years old and you were lucky enough to experience this. Never say life isn't fair.
A concur with you my friend
@@derickpalmer231and only one grammy in 1989 and no rock and roll hall of shame. Criminal
More than twice, even.
Jethro Tull, several masterpieces like my god or wind up.
From one ancient to another, yep.
Always a Tull fan. Todays music sucks Period. No musicians left.Long live Tull
hoy seguramente los músicos en general tienen una mejor técnica pero lo que creo que falta es cultura e imaginación entre otras cosas
For me this is the greatest live rock performance ever. The man is a genius!
Igen , egyetértek .
He truly is a genius, and the rest of the band are just killer as well. So unbelievably good.
Tull was always in a whole different category! Most don't even understand his talents. Plus he had nothing but the best musicians playing with him!
Absolutly right
Luckly i have seen them live 4 times. They are fantastic and i just love that flute as a rock instrument.
Boy oh boy I was 30years old when this happened, and can't stop listening to THE MIGHTY JETHRO TULL I'm 80years young because of music like this......
Rock on Justin
👍
Hell yes, old man!!!! I will be right there with you some day. As long as we can draw breath and can occasionally stand on one leg...
I was 13 when I first heard Tull... In 1970. I'm 63 years young myself Justin, keep on!
very cool!!!!
This is Jethro Tull at their finest!!
Absolutely 100%
Oh yeah, so awesome!
Sex with the flute.
Hard to believe he was only 23 here. 😮 I saw JT at least 6x and we always had 1st or 2nd row seats. The 70s were an amazing time to go to concerts. I think tickets were around $5 sometimes. 🎟 Loved seeing him perform. An amazing showman. ❤️ Pure genius❣️ 👏 🪈
Benefit Tour , and to my pleasure, mixing a lot of "Stand Up". Row G is as close as could score.but, it was , dead center orchestra seating. For, as you pointed out ,around 5.50 . Not bad for two 15 yr. olds , ......on a school night hahahaha
Ian Anderson = combination of (flutist, vocalist, lyricist, composer, showman, crazy man) par excellence.
Jethro tull Its not Just rock 'n roll, Its something by itself.
You think flute with rock? Thats not possible, but rock shows time after time, you can add any instrument into it and make it rocking roll
He definatly broke a mold only onejethro
Sono d'accordo. Jan Anderson un grande! Salutoni dall'Italia 🌷
@@bastrixer, was just thinking same thing about flute as a rock instrument, although, I hear jazz influences in there, as well, so seems like it may have been unexpected, yet a natural leap, all the same.
You are forgetting acoustic guitarist. He came up with some haunting lines, as can be heard here.
Ian is in a different world than ours!
But, no Nothing is Easy!
Ian Anderson is the hendrix of the flute and acoustic guitar absolutely stunning
He is a very underrated singer, too.
I’ve been obsessed with this wizard for 40 years.
I have been listening to Jethro Tull for over 40 years and still play them in my car and house today and my teenage boys like his music also.

One of the greatest live music events of all time. Fortunate son.
++@@williamwinslow6582++ I have to agree and would add thaat the 1969 IOW was just as good, in different ways. We had trees to sit in and Bob Dylan was not dead, as had been rumoured.
Then came the "Night Assemblies Act" and everything went to the dogs.
Not there that night, but I’ve seen them 4 times.
I can offer, in its purest possible form, 100 gigatons of pure, crystalline envy.
The Gospel According to Jethro Tull.
The Most True Gospel.
The greatest band of the 70s for me, magic
Ian Anderson is immensely talented!!
One of the greatest live bands ever. Always gave you 2 h 2 1/2 hrs. Top musicianship ,great songs. Killer lyrics and one of the best front men of all time.In their prime they had no equal
You are so right.Their fans loved them because they remained faithful to their music, they put out a stunning album every year, and when they toured they always came to town. Was that a hot ticket!! Because of exactly what you said. You knew your were in for an awesome concert experience. I requested a Jethro Tull song on a local classic rock station some time back and told the DJ that Ian Anderson could command an arena of 20,000 with a wave of his flute and she giggled. I felt sorry for her. The only other band at the time that could rival Jethro Tull for a live concert performance was Emerson Lake and Palmer. Agree Mike? I’m sure you saw both. What wonderful memories. Stay well bro.☮️🎸✌️
I saw them at the forum in 1977 they Easley rivaled Zeppelin and another forgotten group of the time Supertramp.
Saw them many times between '73 & '78 Boston garden Springfield civic center Hartford civic center Hampton beach!!!! Absolutely tightest band out there¡!
No one will ever play flute like him ever.
Study his style. He is certainly someone to aspire and learn from .
One of the most unmistakable vocals of all time ! Hello middle ages , are you there? ✌️🌈🌞
Hands down - the Pride Piper of Rock & Roll. Ian - a true playwright performer, story teller and prog-rock craftsman.❤🎉❤🎉
Saw them in SanAntonio in 1975. Will never forget it. Most epic concert of all time. Passion Play tour. Still have goose bumps.
Do you know what I was wondering as to what type of rock ‘n’ roll singer I could classify him as
Ian Anderson. The one and only.
This rare film clip done at the isle of wright deserves at least a 5 star performance and it was superbly done by all of them and all these musicians got it done.
You can get their entire performance on DVD. I've had it for years.
Tull is a very big part of my growing up and still playing their music today at 68.
Saw them every time they toured OZ.
I saw Tull perform Aqualung at Bayfront Stadium and my musical life was changed. I’ve been a Jethro Tull fan ever since. 1970 or 71. Those were great days in music.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This amazing performance proves once and for all, That Ian is Arguably one of the most, if not The Most talented "Front-man" in rock history!
Incredible front man, incredible musicians, incredible music. Its a fine line between genius and lunacy. Thank God Ian has both.
I saw Ian anderson in 1977 ..@ 17 yrs old …. One of my most memorable concerts .
Saw Tull 11 times from 69-2006. It ranks as some of my favorite times and memories. I felt that I had discovered something that most people didn't know about, something special.
I love how Glenn Cornick is just leaning there watching the spectacle, then suddenly springs into action with this massive energy convulsing his body.
There really needs to be a "I F**KING LOVE THIS!!!" button.
Oh yes!!! He grabs you from the inside and turns you inside out!
U are right Sir
Maybe i'am old; but i'm happy lo love this kind of music.
The real madman across the water... Tull rules...
Oh my God, I forgot how blessedly good these boys were, Tune crafters extraordinaire, masterful players. How lucky we were to be in their presence.
WHY in the name of the Lord is Tull not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Best live rock concert I ever saw in my 70 years!!!
simply because RRHOF is not about rock and roll... Madonna was inducted, so what??
Because they are not American and have never tried to be even remotely so. Proudly British.
RRHOF is a fucking joke just like the Grammys. Doobie brothers inductee this year. Really?.... they have been making great albums since 1971 just like Tull. That's 50 freakin years....
The Beastie Boys got in Blondie got in ..Jon Bovi kiss my ass Rock and Roll hall of jokes.
Real art isn't stamped like pop music.
@@sav7568 well, you realize blues and rock is from America which inspired 100% of the British prog-rock bands. But the main point is that the RRHOF is a joke no matter which country you come from. And despite what the other comments say, its not because they include hiphop or pop artists (because many rappers have the rock feel) but its because they are openly a popularity contest and a "pay to win" organization. They function on $$$$$$ alone... Im actually glad Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson is not in that shit "hall of fame" should be hall of shame. Its a joke.
No one needs to be told how amazing Jethro tull is, if you DO need to be told that - then youre better off without them.
And your nationalism is falling of deaf ears. Music is for everyone, blues started from the slaves in my area who needed that music to survive, but even that can be traced back to the gospel, that can be traced back to baroque, to classical, etc etc. You can do this all day with many MANY different tangents and outside influences.... my point is, Ian's nationality has ZERO to do with why they aren't in the RRHOF. But anyone worth their salt realizes those awards are just one big circle jerk.
I guess when you're one of the greatest flute players in the World....every now and then you touch yourself making sure it's still there..💚
Excuse me but are you talking about Michael jackson?
The most amazing frontman there ever was!
When I was 15 and finally ready to give my father's music a chance, he played Thick As A Brick for me. My life was never the same and I couldn't be more thankful!
The TAAB album was remixed for the anniversary edition and the sound is unreal and the band discusses that album and how scared they all were to play it live the first time so intricate so many odd time changes.
So cool to hear the band discuss the recording etc..
Ya the brick was my favorite since i was young. Anytime my dad wanted to piss my mom off, on went the brick. She hated it,Lol i do the same thing too when the wife is pissing me off with the same effect.
Amen!!
Great Ian Anderson. Love your music, words, fluit, guitar and other...
Thanks from poor Russia.
My favorite of all music videos available.
Killer tune!
The R&R Hall of Fame is a farce.
I agree. Ian himself said he does not belong in the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, lasy year he said the following: “So far, it’s a sense of relief that I haven’t had to face the embarrassing prospect of being invited into the Hall of Fame, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I’ve maintained the position that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an American institution about American-inspired music. It doesn’t necessarily preclude musicians of other nationalities, but I think it’s gotta be essentially about American music. Not necessarily exactly rock and roll, so we’re not talking about Chuck Berry, Little Richard, or Elvis Presley or whatever, but we’re talking broadly speaking, pop and rock music. There is a certain sort of American styling, and certainly, the Rolling Stones for example would fit that perfectly. Because they owe everything to American music, whereas I guess Jethro Tull, apart from the first album, I would say, not a lot of Americana in the musical styles that I tend to work with. So I don’t think we are appropriate as inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”
Ian is no shrinking violet and has always said what he actually thinks.
You know what really grinds my gears? A 15 second commercial during his flute solo.
AdBlock or smth. similar...and you will not be disturbed ever again
Totally agree😩
@Boone Eugene No, I don't care. Not going to last this one, is it...
@Jordan Peirce. What really "grinds my gears" (your phrase) is that you think you're supposed to get for free. Why don't you quit being a little pampered infant, and pay $9.95 a month for the UA-cam premium service? Think of it: You get something for free and you're such a big baby that you think you have the right to get pissed off because you don't like how they give it to you. Okay, I'm coming over to your house. I'm going to walk into your kitchen. I'm going to start eating all your food. It really grinds my gears that you're going to expect me to pay for it. You know I'm right. And you know what else? You don't have the guts to admit it publicly. .
@@jamesoeming5022 If I can be forgiven for butting into someone else's argument, the other guy isn't complaining about the fact that UA-cam carries advertisements, just about where this particular advertisement is placed. Whose fault that is could be down to one of two things. If a video is more than 8 minutes long, UA-cam by default inserts one or more mid-roll ads. Where UA-cam puts these mid-roll adds is automated, basically by some rudimentary AI that looks for "gaps" in the sound track or action. Maybe the AI made a bad call here, probably because there aren't any such "gaps" in this case? But the video poster can move the adds to somewhere less intrusive - they can even turn them off!
Whatever, it's a fact that the ad break in this particular video is in a really annoying place, and that's all the guy is saying; hardly justifies your over the top lecture in response. And you're not telling people anything they don't already know.
A very underrated but brilliant acoustic guitar player imo.
You must be young. Jethro Tull drew crowds as large as Led Zeppelin did back in the day.
@@Steve-cp6go I wish mate, I was referring to how underatted Anderson is as an acoustic guitar man. I've seen Tull more times than any other band. All the best.
Not underrated. Who underrated JT? Never heard that about this great band and Mr Anderson.
Oh man that flute solo is just incredible....
Ian Anderson = BRILLIANTLY in-freakin-sane!!
Rare....rare song!!!
Stand Up Benefit and Aqualung possibly the greatest 3 album run in rock history.
Britain produced so many unique rock bands after the Beatles broke through. Impressive for a country of our size.
Yes! But sadly, where are the new bands of worth?
Indeed! America is the birth place of rock n roll. UK birth place of hard rock and of course heavy metal!
I totally agree! And I’m from America. Too many to count from the 1970’s .
too strongs those British.. they invented all stuff in rock music !
A lot of it had to do with the end of conscription in 1960~1963 while the USA still had theirs in force until the end of their involvement in Vietnam. A lot of young British talent developed during that short window of time in the 60s and "invaded" the USA.
Saw them live only one time. Great concert! Ian was a wild man!
Saw 8 different tours,starting in 72,I was 14 AMAZING
This song is one of the greatest songs , standing on one leg playing the flute !!! When I saw him for the first in early seventies my mind was blown away !!!
Ian Anderson is truly possessed by a medieval minstrel as he strikes those poses with left foot on right knee while talking the flute... Utterly fantastic....
Keith Harris: Clearly you were totally sucked into the role Anderson played!
Awesome songs
Mostly to get his lungs filled with air to play the flute..just watch & listen. All for the sound, his body was part of that flute an instrument or part of...feefin great band !!! I love them man. Up the pool but better yet a witches promise...
@@andythomas706....you're completely wrong
I've seen Tull 6 times in 70~80s and Ian 3 times. . look up the 60~70s definition of a "head". the "roll" you said he played and his music defines who he is. i partied with Tull in 71 at dayton Hara arena.
he's one of those you just love to talk to.spontaneous funny out to lunch..etc... i told him about my time at Kent St. in 70. he couldn't believe we were shot at and people died. he told me about a personal tragedy he went thru. kind of a bummer.
when Ian played Cinny in 2013 i was close enough to hand the stage manager a note ...about what he told me along time and many brain cells ago. manager gave me a back stage pass. he didn't remember me but wondered how i knew. i told him about hara arena partying.. still didn't remember but like i said many brain cells ago. he's still one of those you love to talk to.. older slower but still half crazy but so am I.. i have 2 tickets reserved in my name for all his USA shows..if you want to go sometime....
Keith Harris
Saw JT back in 2004 or 2005 in Houston. Great show in a great venue Jones Hall. He came to Houston again in 2018 or maybe 2017 but he’s lost a lot of his voice especially the higher registers so he really did his fans a disservice because he couldn’t deliver what they came to see and paid for.
Puts his heart and soul into it...LOVE YOU, Ian
Still speechless!❤️
He had the nerve and the wisdom to sing of subjects such as this. A true troubadour and minstrel!
Of course Ian Anderson is one in two million.., a wild genius. The likes of which we’re not likely to see again. He’s brilliant.
One in 300 million!!!
Back when Rock Rolled.....Brilliant is a good word but does not quite cover him.....
Batshit crazy pretty much sums it up. Absolutely one of the best performers of the era
& he said I never took drugs or alcohol
I think of Ian as unique, one of a kind. I mean it’s been over half a century, and nobody’s even tried to follow in his foot steps.
Ian Anderson was not only a musical phenomenon He was a showman a class act. He is still one of favorites of all time. His music took you back in time to another era I believe I must have lived a past life during that period because I love his music. He played the hell out of that flute. Progressive rock cool.
Inimitable genius!!! Performance excellent!!!
Glen & Clive Forever 🤘 Ian & Martin as well of course 💪
Absolutely fantastic

Yes a guitarist albeit average
I was introduced to Tull by my cousin Tim
He was a religious type so awfully boring but he did enjoy progressive rock and introduced me to Jethro Tull benefit album
Being a New Zealander we tend to have ties with the old Dart
He's in his 70's and still puts on an awesome show!
What an ABSOLUTE !!!!! True GENIUS !!!! Ian Anderson is working that flute !!!! Skillfully simultaneously playing and expressing language with his flute , I would have done anything to attend and experience a LIVE Jethro Tull concert , I'm 59 years old , too young to have been to Jethro Tull's concerts in 1969-1970 how unfortunate The GREATEST !!!! flutist in the entire world !!!! Cannot be replicated . There is only one single 1 !!! Only , Mr Ian Anderson !!!!
listening to music like this when your 12 years old im so blessed to have grew up in the best era of music
' I thank you Lord that you've hidden yourself from the learned and the wise and revealed yourself to the humble and the poor'.
"Only drowning men can see him" Leonard Cohen, best done by Nina Simone......"Suzanne "

@@TenMinuteTrips What exactly about loving your neighbor do you find so offensive that you would mock someone's belief system, and mock a line in a great song?
I remember seeing Ian Anderson on the stage in 1973 it was so good all I can say is God bless him guess he's so good
The fact that Ian was not on drugs is the most unbelievable thing about this performance.
drugs are good but not needed during the performance. pink floyd didn't play while on acid.
Ian is on record as having said, quite early in the seventies, that the only drugs he ever did were nicotine and alcohol - and he gave one of those two up decades ago.
He just meant to say it's an extraordinary performance.
@@tej2ni They did a few times in the early days, or so the footage seems to show.

Wooooow! Awesome! Ian Anderson is the best
What a Freak he was at playing that damn flute! NO ONE can play like he can, grunting, groping, panting, sneezing, singing, crying, what a performance. What a song, thanks for the upload!

and a dirty old man to boot!
+Rex Russell Not to take anything away from Ian's flute playing which is great, but he took quite a lot of influence from the playing of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
A dirty old man?! Please elaborate ;)

"Sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent!" or pick another song, say "Hunting Girl" I suppose I shouldn't connect their lyrics with him personaly, but its just an impression I get. Hope you don't think I'm slandering him, he's quite my hero actually.
Arguably the greatest Tull song ever. It's just that damn good. The way it builds is so outstanding. And when it reaches the apex of the song it does not disappoint.
Real Artists, real Music, for real listeners. Thanks for this great video 👍
Ian Anderson is FREAKING RIDICULOUS!!!!! Totally amazing
Ian Anderson, master of the flute! This has to be the best audio from 1970 that I have ever heard.
One of Glen Cornick’s last performances with Tull, what a fantastic bassist
Truer words my friend...
This song is so haunting.
And then came glasscock. Barlow and Glasscock .need I say more.
Yeah, he had a super cool style/vibe...a real deal bass player.
Together with John Paul Jones, Glen Cornick has always been my favourite bass player.
One and only Ian Anderson. More than great!
"People what have you done?" Timeless question for many reasons these days! I consider myself lucky to have seen the band live several times throughout my life. Their music and poetry certainly changed my view of the world, for the better, I would say. Thank you Ian Anderson and group!
I added Tull to my listening by getting hold of the Stand Up album when I was about 15.Found them captivating and splendid, happily throwing them into the mix of my other loves, Zep, Purple, Hendrix, E. L. P, Budgie and on and on ........ It wasn't possible to be bored with all that amazing music around. Even now at 60 I have never needed the lure of much techky gadgets, music usurps them every time.
He has created a picture for ever, a style, a sound this was JT his stage playing is just unbelievable.
They were amazing. I'm so lucky to have seen them live in the 70's...and they sound amazing live.
My favorite band of all time...and Ian is a genius....one reason my son is named Ian...I will always be a Tullian....
Same here!! My son is Ian also!!
I don't have a son named Ian, but I do have a daughter who plays flute, since 8 years old! Because of Ian!
This song is a masterpiece. Both soft / easy listening and heavy as hell in it's own way.
Been listening and loving Tull since the late 70's when hearing my older brother play their records, and been lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. It's a massive shame when great musicians pass away but worse when they fall out and lose the magic that they had created. Ian was and probably still is a great writer and producer and was a great frontman for tull but lost his voice 20 years ago and unfortunately wanted to take the band in his OWN direction parting ways with the underrated brilliant Martin Barre. Fantastic that we still have all the great music that they made together!!!
What a performance!! What an artist! Truly great.
What a band, get that up yer you modern day bands!
saw this magical man 5 times. So blessed❤❤❤❤❤
Tull, you mad and wonderful minstrel!!
Your likes will not be seen again 😎🤘
Genius with a touch of insanity. A perfect combination of
This is the quintessential lineup of Tull. Anderson, Cornick, Bunker, Barre and Barlow. The best.
I agree completely, but I think you meant Anderson, Barre, Cornick, Bunker and Evan. 👍
The greatest band of all time..
Brilliant , ian anderson is just unreal
One of the best voices in rock history. So underrated for his vocals.
No other band has influenced me as much as this one!
Born 1960, seen them life- Still the best band ever for me
Me too & I've seen a ton of them.
I saw them in 1971, one of the best concerts I have ever seen, he flipped his flute 50 ' in the air it came back to his hands, and he never missed a beat, wow.
Sei stato fortunato!😊
Saw him was too late, 1982 although could have seen him in 1976/77
I did that with a joint once 😂
(71) Great year to see Tull! I was at one of the concrts!
I believe it. I believe it.
What a spaz, awesome. Saw them in 73 and 74 incredible shows.
It is a journey every time---they gave us an experience. Up and down and all around!!
This is my favorite Jethro Tull song..
He kills it on the flute!!
THE most underrated musician in the world.....
Underrated??? i don't think so. Jethro is the best progressive rock band ever!
Not really underrated, just that Led Zep have more fans.
one of many. Ive never turned JT volume down
The right People rate him right
Without doubt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Astounding timing...what a performance. Not sure this can be topped (by anyone).
Been a fan for 50 years, picked them up in ‘73. I heard half of his flute solo was Ian just trying to fight off a sneezing fit, I kid, his performance was excellent and highlighted the eccentrics of Ian Anderson’s mind. Saw him in ‘ 79 Heavy Horses Tour Seattle Center Coliseum. I love that, that performance is on UA-cam, I get to re-live it every once in a while, I can even spot my seating area at the show.
The talent possessed here. Been a favorite for a long time and forever will be!
My god he was 23!!!
I’m sixty now and a JT lover since my teenage years.
I wished I could have experience them in my youth but I grew up in East Germany (GDR) and because of the iron curtain that was always just a dream. The only way to see them at these times was rare enough in TV.
Some years ago I finally had the opportunity to see them live in a concert.
And it was great!
I have almost if not all of their albums (my N#1: Songs From The Wood) in my archive and have watched several live performances here at YT over the years.
But I have to say that I haven’t seen this one ‘til this moment.
I always knew Ian Anderson can play the flute like no other (one reason to love him and JT) but what he does here is even new for me!
I say that with all the regard and respect: Artists like him I call an animal! In the best sense of that. What a performance!
A funny detail marginally: Watching his fingering posture every music school flute teacher would throw his hands up in despair. ;-)
But who else cares...
Yup and he's 73 today!!!
Thank you so much Ian Anderson Peace Respect and Love Tom 🙏 AMEN 😍😍😍💞💞💞🌛 Sir 🎩
this band is one of a kind, rock hall of fame is not worthy of such excellence.
