Bonus points for using the remastered HECU realism models. That weird yet awesome mix of early 2000s military gear sprinkled in with some mid 70-80s PASGT and ALICE gear. Since Black Mesa takes place around the 2000s (probably somewhere around 2005 or smthn considering the gear), seeing more new (for the time) Interceptor body armour and Lightweight Helmets mixed in with older ALICE packs and webbings, PASGT helmets and vests and M40 gas masks creates an oddly unique and standout design for the HECU. Best way I can describe it is being at the first footsteps of the modern day we associate with the US military (Afghanistan, Iraq War, Horn of Africa etc). Edging closer to more modern kit yet still old enough to be hauling around 70s-80s gear because it wasn’t entirely phased out and not everyone got access to the new toys and gear, as they were still kinda new (but because the HECU are high-speed and at least MEU-SOC if they aren’t special operations, they still get them earlier).
What makes you think HECU was just strictly marines? Military sent to Black Mesa was made up of mix of branches. That's why we also get to see black operations later on.
@@jerry12314 The HECU is strictly composed by Marines. The Black Ops were just sent as a last resort, due to the failure of the original cleanup operation by the HECU, which is why Black Ops kills HECU as well.
Man it's amazing! Honestly seeing the horrors of black mesa through a grainy camera is a really unique change I haven't really seen yet for a black mesa SFM. I also like the gulf war vibes from this.
What I never understood is why HECU was so giddy to kill, particularily security guards. Those are extra guns and they are supposed to work with HECU in events like this
True. They were a containment team but somehow their orders switched from rescuing and screening survivors coordinate with them, pacifying hostiles to killing everyone and everything. This is apparent in some special dialogues in HL1, Opposing Force and Blue Shift that they were led to believe the disaster was caused by saboteurs in the science team and were treated as terrorists. This is also why they were keen on apprehending Freeman before he became a real threat to them believing he was solely responsible. Anyway this is really my biggest problem when they made Half-Life 2 and dismissed all the interesting conspiracy theory lore of the first game and just switched to a new setting.
@@jerry12314 Well I think that, most likely the HECU would now be seen as traitors to the country and to humanity itself especially given that the coverup failed miserably.

My only complaint is I don’t think the marines would be that giddy and would film them shooting civilians. Considering their US marines being ordered to execute US citizens, they’d be a lot less jolly and joking about it.
I always thought that they were told exaggerated stories and lies about what was going on at Black Mesa before they were sent in, hence the hostility and willingness to gun down their own. That, or due to Gordon hopping around killing jarheads, they take their frustration out on civilians because Gordon, to them, is also one. Maybe they just assume every BM staff member is working against them or a part of Gordon’s rampage. Idk, whatever the reason may be it still works out in context of the video. Just a banger edit emulating the kind of stuff you’d expect to see on a shitty camcorder in Iraq.
@@PALADINKILLIAN-1403 I think what's more relevant is the fact that the black mesa operation was a COVER UP mission. I don't think there would be any cameras allowed.
