  • Do you have questtions about speeds and power settings for your laser? Do people keep telling you to make a test card? What the heck is a test card and why should you make one? Why won't someone just share their settings with you? In this video, I'll discuss why you should cut or engrave a test card anytime you are using a new material. Come along friends!

Is the power scale limiting the engraving to 20% absolute power or 20% of the 80% power that the layer is set to?
    Either way, great tip!

I had to look this up on the lightburn website - In math, it’s this: Min + (Max - Min) * PowerScale
And it’s also subject to the ‘Start Speed’ issue, so if you’re cutting at or below the start speed, it’s only using Min Power.
The simplest way to think of it is that Power Scale is a slider / knob that goes from Min Power to Max Power as the Power Scale moves from 0 to 100.
With Min & Max set to 10 / 85, the delta between them is 75%, so that’s what you’re scaling. If you had 11 squares, with the scales of 0, 10, 20, 30, and up to 100, the equivalent Max Power values would be:
      Scale Output Math
      0% 10.0 10 + (0.0 * 75)
      10% 17.5 10 + (0.1 * 75)
      20% 25.0 10 + (0.2 * 75)
      30% 32.5 10 + (0.3 * 75)
      40% 40.0 10 + (0.4 * 75)
      50% 47.5 10 + (0.5 * 75)
      60% 55.0 10 + (0.6 * 75)
      70% 62.5 10 + (0.7 * 75)
      80% 70.0 10 + (0.8 * 75)
      90% 77. 5 10 + (0.9 * 75)
      100% 85.0 10 + (1.0 * 75)

@@directedt3ch wow - thanks for doing that leg work! My business is primarily CNC and wood working, but our biggest customer needed everything laser engraved, so we dove into that too, but I’ve never had the time to put into like I normally would. I’ve used material test to get in the ball park, but being able to use the actual graphic as the test is priceless for our application. Thanks again!
