Log Cabin Quilt Block Strip-Pieced Tutorial

- Hi there! In this video I show you how to strip-piece a log cabin quilt block using four fat quarters. This technique makes eight blocks at a time. It’s kind of a relaxing quilt project. I like to take my time, put on some music or a podcast and sew away!
These blocks use 2 1/2 inch strips, so it’s also a great project for a jelly roll.
This particular block “finishes” at 10 inches square. What I mean by that is when it’s sewn into a quilt, using a quarter-inch seam allowance, it measures 10 inches. The block as pieced is 10 and a half inches.
Thank you for watching, and please like, share & subscribe! 🥰🌵
I’ve been sewing for over 40 years, but have only been quilting for about a year and a half. This method looks so easy, I’m going to try a log cabin soon…other quilts to work on first!! Regarding the batik, I worked at a fabric shoppe that sold mostly batiks and I noticed that some, not all have a more vibrant side, so I use that as my right side, and some are identical so you could use either side. Thank you for your easy beginner friendly tutorial!!!
@anndalynn Glad you like video! I love the idea of working in a fabric shop and will most likely do that when I have the time. Thanks for the info on batiks. I think viewers will find it helpful! Happy quilting 🧵
Thank you for this easy tutorial it took 5 videos to find. Yours was by far the easiest step by step. Thank you
@noeliareyes Thank you so much! I’m glad u found my video and that it’s helpful! I’ll be posting a tulip block video soon that uses the same strip piecing in part of the block. It’s a useful technique that comes in handy. Happy sewing 🧵

Thank you, Sandy. I appreciate it!
Lovely! Good to know how many 10” log cabin blocks you can get with four fat quarters (if you don’t mind a slightly scrappy look with the outside dark colours). Thanks for a very easy-to-follow tutorial! ~Diana K.
Thanks so much, Diana! I’m glad you like the video 😊
I was watched so many of the log cabin videos, I have to say yours was sooooo relaxing, loved your pattern, the tone of your voice explaining the procedure. Thankyou for sharing. I subscribed.

I love your Sewing machine Mine is the same brand as yours but mine is older and it works really good The only thing I ever had to have fixed Sewing machine Is the Back and forward Button A friend Fixed it
@angelahart Thanks! I really like Pfaff. I bought a second one used, same model. It was not well loved but I did get it serviced and it works great now. Happy sewing and thank you for watching!
I find this is the fastest way to make log cabin blocks . I finished 20 blocks in no time.
I’m so glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
I've made several log cabin quilts over the years and oh boy it took me forever because of the joining on and piecing and cutting the strips as you go..... but this method works wonderfullly, I'm going to try this with the FQ that I have got...!! So out of the 4 pieces of FQs you ended up with 8 blocks?
@countkostaki Well you need 4 fat quarters plus an extra strip for the center. Also remember that if u have only one fat quarter of each dark, then you have to use a strip of your first dark on your final round as well. It’s clear in the video I think 🤪. It gives a somewhat scrappy look. Happy quitting and thank you for watching! 🧵🧵
There are so many different ways to make a log cabin. I have been trying to make up my mind for sure what pattern I am going to use on the quilt I am about to make. I am redoing the colors in my home after having primarily red with touches of blue for thr lad y 10 urars or so. NOW I am doing Turquoise💙, eggplant🍆/purple💜, and gray❔️. In the last year or two I have lost most of my mobility ♿️. So in addition. to changing the colors and layout in the rest of the house I have purchased a better sewing machine that I don't have to use a foot pedal with if it's too hard. I need a pretty relaxing space. I decided in the middle of the night last night when I couldn't sleep that instead of doing the jigsaw like pattern I was thinking of that I needed to simplify as much as possible. I like strip piecing when ever poccible. I watched a LOT of videos on different ways to do Jacob's ladder🪜, strip quilting with a tube⛓️, log cabins etc. I want my quilt to reflext me and not just be the right colors but a certain pattern becayse it was easier (required less thought and was fast). As I was eating my lunch just now I was watching somr non quilting UA-cam videos and this video came up in my feed. It caught my attention because of the colors and fabrics you chose... I often think that the demos are done with colors and fabrics chosen. so that it be easy to see on camera. But I love what you chose. The dark is very close to one of my fabrics. I have six that I bought for the quilt itself 2 turquoise batiks, a dark one and a light one, then I have a floral 💐that has both purple and turquoise flowers, then one with a white background and purple flowers and then a dark purple batik🌌. I have been thinking of what color to use to back it. the front will have so much going on I probably want to go with
OMG #SLAY
@Amy Reay I’m so glad my video popped up in your feed. Your colors sound beautiful, and I’m sure they’ll make a wonderful quilt. It’s just crazy all the techniques there are in quilting. It’s one of the things I love about it. There’s always something new to learn! I hope you post an update when you decide on your pattern. Thank you for watching and taking the time post your comment! Happy quilting 🥰
Great tutorial only need to adjust volume as it goes high and low
@bettybrooks Thank you, Betty, for watching. Audio is a challenge for me 😊Happy quilting!
Sue do you know about Sew Yeah quilting .. they have beautiful fabrics of every kind. Thought you might like to know.. you can tell them I referred you to them..
Thanks for the tip, Denyse, I’ll check them out!
I love your iron…where did you get it? Also, this was very simple. You made it very simple.
@mhagan oh gosh I think I got the iron at Tuesday Morning a long time ago. Thank you for watching & commenting!
This is really different than what I’ve seen at first I thought I don’t know if I can do this lol but then as I’m watching it really makes perfect since ! How may I ask did you learn this tech*** please ? I love that it seems the seams would be the perfect size and no trimming down ! To me I think this would be easier than the reg way I’ve seen for a newer sewer as long as they are dead on the 1/4 inch ! Or would a scant be to small for these ? When do you use this seam allowance
Hi Tonya…I found the technique in a quilting book. I’ll find the title and post it for u. I like to use a scant 1/4” seam when there’s many pieces to the block and have gotten in the habit of using it often and then trimming the block. Thanks for watching & commenting!
The book is the Complete Guide to Quilting from Better Homes & Gardens. I highly recommend it!
Interesting in how to use you’re blocks right
@rosemarywelsh Thank you for watching!
Just found this video. So surprised measurements based on mat when cut instead of using ruler.
@barbarahillegass use your favorite technique and happy quilting!
Log cabin sewing
@Lisa Hickman Thank you for watching!
Pattern for log cabin block?
@doloresboule Hi Dolores, the pattern is in the video presentation. Writing a pattern out for this technique would require lots of accompanying photos for me to explain how to strip piece this, and I don’t think I could do it justice. Thanks for watching and happy quilting!
Do you have a free log cabin pattern that I can download for free ❤❤
@peggyself No, I don’t have a written pattern. This technique, for me, is best taught in a video. I don’t think I could explain it in a written form that would be clear…more like clear as mud 😂
@@MadeBySueAZ yes
Pls adjust the sound levels, it's almost inaudible, especially at the beginning.
Hi Karen…sorry about the volume! At this point I can’t increase it. Please let me know if I can clarify any instructions. Sue
FYI, andxwith all due respect your sound is extremely difficult to hear. The microphone needs to be closer because you sound very far off . Otherwise tutorial very helpful. Thank you.
@paulaberlund4766 Thank you for letting me know. I am striving to have better audio, and I am thankful for your view!
Surprised you are using the cutting mat for measurements. I believe it was Kimberly Jolly who said the measurements won’t be accurate.
Hi Juanava. I do like using the cutting mat 😊. For some reason I can see better than using just the ruler, and I’ve had good luck with my blocks so far. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Sue
Juanava Collins: What? cutting mats ARE accurate...it is a person that cuts the fabric that's inaccurate -operator error... and it is understandable.
@@MadeBySueAZ I like using mine as well. Enjoyed your video. Are you planning to do more?
@@ksharpe8137 Thank you! I do have more videos. Some quilting, sewing projects, and recipes. Let me know if there’s a topic you’re interested in!
Sweet lady, I'm 70, & can not hear you.
@kathleenclark Yes, I have a soft voice. Maybe clicking on “cc” closed captioning would be helpful for you. Happy quilting!
Beautiful
