Pinning away from the seam allowance so we don't have to remove pins at all - Mind Blown! Have been quilting for 20 years...and why didn't I think of that! I really Enjoy your videos... the visual background, video work...as well as your teaching skills, are spot on!
Found this video just in time. Making two log cabin quilts, one for me and one for my sister. Started one by measuring and cutting strips. Gave me a headache. Then i kept mixing up strips. Ugh! Then i put it aside and tried your method on the second one. Awesome tips! It is turning out really nice. And i am enjoying it! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
Great video. Haven't seen any clear instructions like this before. Love how you used a sheet on the back. It kinda gave quilters permission to use a sheet despite the constant argument between quilt snobs who say no way and the rest of us. I've used a sheet before and loved it. It really has held up better than the front of the quilt.
Thanks! And I use sheets allll the time. I think they are great for everyday quilts that get a ton of use. My quilts get washed like crazy and they hold up so well!
I use sheets all the time! I fact I’m always looking for them at Thrift stores since they’re a lot cheaper. Saves a ton of money and there’s no piecing. What’s not to love about that? 🙂
I JUST LOVE YOU!!! I love your style of teaching... I made my first quilt top at 8. My mother wouldn't play with me and wouldssy "go entertain yoursrlf!!" So I did. I first made 8 pointed stars. The second was a Lincoln log with red and white ginhams 1",1/2", 1/4" and then a solid red piece. This log cabin that you made today reminded me of my quilt.
I love your clear instructions. Measuring and correcting the 90 degree corners from the SEAM is such good advice, especially for those of us who are coming to quilting rather, ahem, late in life.
Your videos ARE the best--concise information, no excess 'umm's, or repeated words, like 'ok', or 'alright'? Your diagrams and just every little bit of info you give is helpful. THANK YOU Very much. I decided, like you, to cheat on my quilt backs. I have YET to make a quilt for real, but I decided making a 'faux' quilt would work-using either flat sheets, or low loft comforters from goodwill. The top of the quilt will be hand made, and I've yet to discover if using a comforter in this way would work. I plan to just treat it as batting, and the back will already be done. Do you think this will work?
I know this is a year ago but it's nice to hear. I'm not the only one that you sheets for backing. I do it all the time and it saves so much money and I'm particular in what I use too. But thank you for sharing that. And I love this quilt. It gave me a great idea for quilt I need to do for a wedding. Thank you!
Great video. I love this version of the log cabin - really creative and looks more modern! Thanks for all the tips. I love that you try new things and then let us know how they worked for you.
I watch a lot of good quilting vids. I have to say yours are truly some of my faves. The 5 Cs: Clear, concise, creative, cute, and charming. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your talent.
Fantastic! I made one for my daughter. Virtually no measuring. Starching and squaring up using the seams were excellent tips! I got my colors all out of order which is a bummer, but it just looks scrappy. Put a solid yellow block in the center. Ready to bind. Completed in a weekend.
Very nice design, I like how you take the risk for us in using a different material on the back and follow up regarding how it effect the matetial after washing.
I love seeing new videos from you. You ate so creative and explain techniques really well. I love the idea of a single large block. This will definitely be on my to do list! Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you! It’s definitely easier to check a few times throughout the block than end up with a weird looking quilt at the end! I know that from experience! 😂
@@TinyOrchardQuilts I hoped you were going to say don't worry about precision but then you showed us how to be precise without losing our marbles. I will have to watch how you compensated for the seam again; before that I would have either said "no" to the pattern or tried some creative cutting or un-piecing with poor results.
I swear, dogs love to examine the quilt, find their spot and then lay down on it with the look of: What? Glad to see it happens to others…really enjoyed this approach for log cabin quilts.
You are so very sweet and kind. You have such a wonderful attitude and it really shows that you love what you're doing! And noone can say you don't explain this process thoroughly. I'm still watching, but I thought I'd comment. ;-)
Megan I brand new to quilting in February...so obsessed already!! Love all of your tips tricks and quilts! Thank you!!! I was curios if you have a tutorial on your Blackberry Quilt...saw it on Pinterest. Love from Canada!
Love your tutorial! I'm looking to sew up my stash and you have given me so many ideas! Thinking this style could be pieced and quilted directly onto the wadding and backing for a double quick quilt!
Too Funny, I have always wanted to create a quilt from “one block”. I’m on a “little” piece of fabric. I plan on doing this with something smaller than 5”. Tfs
Thanks. I’ve watched this video plus your starching video and I have a follow up question: Looks like you sometimes do additional starching when you are pressing your seams open. Would it be possible to explain when you choose to do this and what your method is? Thanks! I love your teaching style!
I love your tips and tricks on keeping your block sizes accurate. What is the purpose of sewing the length of the cut strips together in the beginning?
Have you ever tried the vodka and water mixture to make your own spray starch. You can dilute it to make it not heavy or add more vodka to make heavy starch. You can also drop a little oil scent to scent your starch also
Good tutorial. Have used from 3/4 inch to about 3 1/2 inch strips. Not sure I would go 5 1/2. Maybe only 4 blocks and get a bigger top done. Have to think about this.
I love that you used a microfiber sheet for the backing. Always looking for good backing ideas. I know you said a fluffier batting might be better. Is there a fluffier batting you would recommend?
I’m a big fan of wool! I’ve also recently tried the Hobbs Tuscany silk batting which is pretty fluffy-It’s pricey though! I also recently bought some quilters dream puff as well as their poly and I’m surprised how much I like them. The quilting looks amazing and id definitely use them in a quilt I knew was going to washed a million times.
@@TinyOrchardQuilts awesome thank you! The only batting I have used is the Kyoto bamboo batting but I think it's pretty thin. I've only made two baby blankets and 1 large quilt so I'm trying to expand my horizons on batting.
@@Sharon-pb7so thanks! I think I'm going to try that on my next quilt. I'm getting ready to quilt my 4th quilt. I've made one for each of my kids and next will be for the husband. I'm only doing straight line quilting. I'd love to see more videos about that
I noticed at the end that the tips of your quilting gloves had darker marks on them. I’ve noticed that happening on mine too - should I be worried about that transferring onto my quilt? I wasn’t sure if I had carelessly gotten them dirty or if that is just inevitable with usage. Thanks for your videos!!
Love this idea of one block being the whole quilt. Log Cabin was my first love.

And, NO home quilt tutorial would be complete without a four-legged fur baby getting cozy on the newly finished quilt! Love it and this tutorial ❤
I really like the way you add the best tips, and the smile you always have
Thank you! I really try to make the videos valuable even if you don’t plan on making the exact pattern :)
Great tips to keep your corners at 90 degrees - thanks!
thanks for teaching me so much about squaring blocks
I love the squaring-off tips and techniques. Mind blown- will certainly add to all my quilts' precision.

I made a huge mistake and cut a ton at 5 inches, instead of 5 1/2. Start again with new fabric, or will 5 inches work?
5” will totally work! Just keep going-your strips will just end up at 4 1/2” instead of 5. No big deal at all :)
@@TinyOrchardQuilts whew.. I'm such a novice. Thank you!
You can totally do this :) just take your time on those long seams :)

Sooo, how did you sew the white portion on? New to sewing quilts, you explain things so well and I appreciate you, thanks.
