  • My Hibiscus Bonsai has finished flowering, so it's time to prune the long branches back. I'm also putting my tiny Serissa forest into a new pot.
    Today's updates are my Pink Pixie Bougainvillea bonsai and my larger Ficus religiosa bonsai.

Good change in the pot for the serissa forest. I admire your work on the bougainvillea. It is really looking FANTASTIC! I have several bougainvilleas in my collection. Well done. Great video! The Hibiscus bonsai had very nice flowers and nice branch structure when finished pruning. It was great to see your miniature serissa forest, it looks great in the new pot. I'm really starting to enjoy miniature plantings. The bougainvillea and ficus are looking fabulous and have to be a couple of my favorites.

    I live on a steep hill. The entire hill was a sheet of ice. Some of my neighbors left their cars at the bottom of the hill and walked up the hill. 1 car got stuck mid way up the hill. And some were stuck at the top. It was very bad. Hopefully your trees make it out. Thanks for sharing your hobby.

    All that ice reminded me of the time I skated around my block as a kid after an ice storm that heavily coated the sidewalks. ~ Your shirt matched the color of the monks robe. That color symbolizes renunciation. Anyone with a passion is likely to have to forgo some pursuits in order to progress and achieve the desired goals of their primary interest. Bonsai requires one to be disciplined, punctual, regular and dedicated, not unlike a monk with his spiritual practices.

    Mr. Sanders, what is the criteria you follow when you choose a tree?
    In my case, my collection is mostly flowering trees: cherry, Japanese cherry, Japanese quince, crab apple, apple, lemon. I also have trees that do not flower such as oak, Chinese elm ginkgo and chestnut.
    Also, I tried to root cutting of weeping willows, but after it roots and the branches start growing, the trunk starts turning black and all the root and branches start wilting and finally they die. Would you have an explanation for that?
    Thank you.
    -Valerio

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 років тому +1

      I tend to get interested in a certain species of tree and I go and try and get one, either a small tree or from seeds. My main interest is in the roots and the trunk, for some reason I find them fascinating
      Lately I've been collecting trees from around the world, I want a collection that represents each continent. I plan to divide my greenhouse up into trees from each continent. All except Antarctic, they don't have any trees or bushes at all.
      Flowers, fruit and interesting seed pods are always a bonus with any tree!
      Try rooting your Willows in late spring, outdoors in full sun using rain water. They should do well. You may have to change the water every couple of weeks if it starts to look green.

      The tree may need root pruning and a larger pot to get it to grow with vigor, you can send me pics to...

      I would normally send you the files, but my hard drive crashed and I lost the files. I am in the process of creating new models. I will let everyone know when they are ready.

    Hey Nigel I m from INDIA and I suggested you to make a bonsai of JASMIN KAMINI , a hardy flowering plant

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 років тому

      They make a beautiful bonsai, but are very rare around here! I can order seeds when I get the new greenhouse going and give them a try!

      I recently purchased some Chinese elm seeds as well, along with various other seeds for bonsai. From my research, they need to be cold stratified for 60days to break their dormancy. Mine have about 6 days left to be 60 days. I also soaked mine in water for 24 hours prior to putting them in a moist paper towel then into a container with a lid to hold that moisture. Then they went into the fridge. My Japanese larch seeds required 30 day cold stratification and I have already planted some and have a out 8 seedlings. Hope this helps a little...i too will see if I've read that article Nigel.

    If you hang closer intense artificial led bulbs, it might get closer branch nodes so it is more full. Given your hight requests. 12:00 What's the climate?
