Sears Craftsman / Troy Bilt 30" Rear Engine Riding Mower Review

- A video review of the Sears Craftsman rear engine 30" riding mower. This is the RER 1000 as labeled on the side of the mower. On the sears website it is model number 29000, or Sears Item# 07129000000 | Model# 29000. The description of this mower on the website is: Craftsman 420cc 30'' 6-Speed Rider. In this video I will do a walk around of the mower as well as some safety hacks to make it more convenient to use. I do not condone disabling any of the safety features, and the responsibility for safe operation, if this is done, is in the hands of a competent operator. If you choose to disable any of the features, you do so at your own risk. This mower is almost identical to the Troy-Bilt 13B226JD066 30" 420cc Rear Engine Riding Mower. They are probably manufactured by the same company and branded different.

Thanks for the video - Were a repair shop 40 years experience tractor repair myself and specialize in transmission repair so must comment, STOP DISENGAGING THE SAFETY REVERSE SWITCH I do 50 - 100 repairs every year the problem is PEOPLE DO NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE SLAMMING INTO REVERSE EVERY TRACTOR THIS YEAR WITH BAD TRANSMISSION HAD THE SAFETY REVERSE SWITCH DISABLED!!!!! Thanks again nice video.... The Repair Place Southport NC
This was very helpful for me, specifically the frustration of not being able to mow in reverse, thank you for that, and that switch on the mower chute has caused me way too many restarts. I want to swap it out for the mulching chute and hopefully it will eliminate so many false stops. Your video was the most helpful and covered what the manual should have shared but does not. Nicely done. Thanks again.
Thank you SOOOOO much for this review. This saved us! We only had this mower a week and my husband hit a high spot and the mower quit. We were worried it was going to be an expensive repair until I found your review.
I want to say "Thank You" because I had no idea there was a kill switch for the mower deck and I had thought that the battery was dead, or the starter, solenoid etc.... though the mower is only a couple of years old. I went out the next day after watching your video here and tightened down the gaurd and sure enough it started right up when I turned the key !!
Next is that back up kill switch !! You're correct on that! It is very annoying when you want to back into an area to mow and you can't.
Thanks again !!
Is the switch suppose to be pressed in all the way in or all the way out ?
JW
Just got one of these for free
Motor turns just fine
@@jessicabenson9017 All the way in.
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
This was REALLY helpful. My mower cut off today and found this video. Now I know there's a safety switch by the plastic cover to the blade!
And I know how to remove the annoying reverse kill switch! Thank you so much!
Great job hitting on many key points such as disabling the reverse mow capability. I will be sure to stop completely before reversing so as not to cause damage. I have a zero lot line yard so reverse mowing in tight areas will be unavoidable. You were more thorough in your video than some others so yours is the deciding factor in my buying this mower. Thank you! ☺
Thank you so much for making this video! I thought my new mower was broken. The operation instructions were terrible but thanks to you, it finally got started. Stress relieved.
Brought this home charged the battery and got nothing, thanks so much for the discharge chute safety switch info. I was not happy and you saved me allot of frustration..
Thank you, Thank you, just solved a BIG mystery for us. Our RER 1000 would NOT start. Nothing, didn't even turn over. The mower belonged to my dad so we didn't have any instructions on it. Bought a battery, still nothing. We thought to check the Internet, should have done that first. Your video was very helpful. Someone must have hit a root and set the kill switch off, down in back of the blade cover.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. My mower was down for 2 days and I tried testing every electrical component on this thing. When you said you bump something and it shut off and all it was is a safety switch, I ran outside and tried it and BAM that was it. Saved my summer.
To remedy the jerking problem when leaving out the clutch, I use 1st gear and throttle on slow or rabbit, then once the tractor gets going I add some throttle and you can shift gears while moving, I just push the clutch in a little bit while rolling and up shift even all the way to 6th gear. My biggest problem after disabling some of the safety switches, was bending the front tie rod as my tractor came with no front bumper or guard of any kind and first tree you bang into you bend that rod easily. Also I saw an oil filter on your tractor but I do not have one on mine I purchased mine from Lows may of 2014. Other than that is a great little unit for the average home owner that doesn't need a bigger tractor. I do almost the same work with this that I did with my Cub Cadet lawn tractor which was a heck of a lot more expensive and had a wider cut but that was all. The cub cadet with it's hydra-static transmisson was expensive to repair and could not climb a 35 degree hill.
Thank you so much for the tips. We couldn't figure out for the longest time what the problem was when you bump into something.
Thank you!! We have this one and it was a helpful review before buying, and now going back several months later to remember how to disengage the mowing in reverse switch! Great review!
Fantastic Video! Thanks! Our mower suddenly stopped in the middle of mowing yesterday and we checked a million things trying to figure out what was wrong. Your mention of the safety switch on the plastic shute was our exact issue! I adjusted the shute and the mower started right up!
Have had this mower for 30 days...holiday weekend, mowing and she stopped. Without this video we would have been paying someone to tell us what your video told us. The chute had come loose. BINGO...up and running again. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the reverse mowing modification, again. I performed it several years ago and just had it maintenanced over the winter. Surprise to me when the tech reattached that cable and I couldn't remember how to mow in reverse! Thanks!
Thanks for your video. My new(ish) mower wouldn't start after the 4th use. The loose chute was the problem, and I would NEVER have gotten it without your video. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the video! Your explanation on running into a sprinkler head and that causing the deck cover to slide off the safety switch saved me a service visit when mine wouldn't start. Great heads-up information. Thank you!
Thank you so much sir for explaining everything in such detail and giving us the ideas of why some troubles could come of these mowers but you’re a very smart man for figuring it out for us and now because of you we don’t have to worry about it breaking down thank you again
I have the Sears version and have been happy with it for the most part. The reverse blade engine kill was easy enough to disengage - that was my biggest beef with it. Otherwise, the clutch can be a bit tricky but for the price it is very maneuverable with a sharp turning radius and has given me 2 years solid service. Finish up mowing before it starts getting dark; with rear-engine mowers you rarely get headlights, and late-season mowing after work - or in the Fall to mulch leaves - can be problematic. For less than $1k it was a good deal.
Glad I watched the video!! I just bought one of these Sears Craftsman R1000 mowers from a lady on Facebook marketplace today. She was asking $400, but I offered $300 and she accepted. :) It's just 2 yrs old and look's great, nearly a new machine and I even got the bagger attachment. Thanks for all the great tips and advice. I'm going to see if I can rig up two gauge wheels on the front of the deck. Other than that, it seems to be a great little machine for smaller yards.
that information about the side skirt switch is not in the manual, you just saved my life, i had to buy a new solenoid and a spark plug with no resolve, thank you so much. I even called Sears, and they didn't even know what was wrong. long story short, she runs now.
That’s a great tip to know about the mowing in reverse.
What about adding some smooth blocks to the bottom edge of the mower deck to act as skis to make an anti scalp feature that way.
I found this very informative, especially about the safety switch on the chute. Ours would not start and come to find out that was the problem. Thank you very much for saving us a service call.
I thank you for this video. I was about to take my mower to the shop to find out why it wouldn't start and it was the discharge chute switch. Thanks again!
Thanks soooooo much for showing me the reset button on the mower. I ran over a big stick and the mower quit working. ugh!!!!! I was scared. But you helped me sooooo much!!!!
I have this tractor and i love it! It's my little monster, it is a pretty hard working tractor. It goes in mud, hills, wood trails, etc... Really tuff.
I've used the Troy-Bilt version for over a year on my 3/4 acre lot. It's tippy, but I'm very satisfied with it. The size is very convenient. As with ANY mower, keep the blade sharp and you will have nicely cut grass. I keep the blade high (4) and it's never conked-out on me, even in thick grass.
I have this mower, used 4 times. I like it very much. I don't like that it is prone to tip over. Shorter wheel base, narrow. Also twice so far the clutch would not engage and when it did the front end reared up. It was scary if not ready. The trans. lever is awkward but you get used to it quickly. Filling fuel is easy. comes with a oil drain sleeve. No messy oil changes. I have seen other brands don't provide this sleeve. That can equal a messy oil change. I pulled the wire so I can mow in reverse. It is nice that it is 50 hrs. between oil changes. I have used synthetic oil for decades on mowers, autos, etc. and highly advise everyone to. The mulch kit is nice, the cleaning port is nice. and turning is nice and tight. No scalp wheels so be careful. If like other batteries you should get 3-4 years out of it. Keep battery on a trickle charger summer and store battery inside on the trickle in winter. Extends the life of the battery. It looks like home maintenance will be easy. I really do not feel you need the expensive extended warranty. When they offered 3 years for the price of one year I asked. Is the 3 years on top of the original 2 years? They said no. Don't want that. As I said I just bought this and time will tell the reliability. If you need a part check with Troybuilt, Cub Cadet. Sears can be higher. For those of you looking for the lowest price of the 3. Craftsman was only $899.00 on sale. The Cub was $1400.00 at the time I was shopping. They look like they are the same made by MTD. Keeping up with the maintenance which is so easy should give you years of trouble free service. Enjoy your new rider.
just bought one thanks for the info.especially the part for mowing backwards.
Thanks for the tip on reverse mowing! Great video!
Great Video! I like how you point out the stuff that "annoys" you. Its those little ticks that can make you really not like something
Thanks sir, I needed dis bought a 1500 and I love it... You showed me just wat I needed to know about it... Especially da mow in reverse, thanks again
After looking at your review, I went out and purchased one. I hope to use it this weekend. I can't wait to fire it up. Excellent review.
Loved your informative video. Gonna go shopping for one today.
I've been loving my TB30 version of this for over 5 years, I hope my Reverse wire is in the same place! As far as the "Hopping" comment, I call it doing a wheelie!
I purchased one thanks for the reverse tip appreciate it I love my riding lawn mower
such a great, informative video. I just bought the craftsman r110 mower from sears. this explains so much.
Good job, man. I sell these things, and recently discovered the safety switch at the mulching cover. lol, there were some pissed off people trying to start this thing. Well done...
I bought the 29900 on 8-2018, and I love it ! I like all the safety switches.. and when I get used to it, I may disconnect the wire, to mow in reverse..
I always wanted one of these smaller riders. It looks like a decent little mower!
If you engage the park brake on the speed control, you can get off the seat without killing the engine. No need to disable the safety switch.
Thank you so much for this video..mower wouldnt start..spend $65 on new battery and sylinoid to find out it was the rubber mulch cover nit compressing the switch...problem solved...your the man!!! Thanks!
A lot of good info, thanks for taking the time:)
Great tips! Thanks for the valuable info!
Thanks for your help. Today I was mowing the range and ran over a old flack jacket that we blew up last your with tannerite. O.D. green and cant see it in the grass. Well it knocked the kill switch on the guard off. Thanks for helping me de-nader this thing.
My daughter gave me one and THANKS for the GREAT INFO on the speed control and the reverse mower switch(yellow wire)
It was like riding a buckin' Bronco until I saw your excellant video. NO PROBLEMS NOW.
I love mine too. The more I learn about it the more I like it. It's good quality for the price all things considered.
I have owned one of these for about 5 years now and only had to replace the starting relay once.
Thanks for the video, I got one from Sears on 6/12/2015. I love the mower. First thing I did was to disengage the reverse blade engine kill switch.
+Rickey Sims how did you disable it
+Don Dooley It's the same way in the video at 3:40
+Rickey Sims thanks
I purchased my model 29000 in late August, 2016. It took a couple of mows of my 1.5 acre lawn to get used to the controlls. The center forward, neutral and reverse control between your legs could be much better. It has plenty of power as it has to go up a 2-3% incline and mows fine. I run it in 3rd gear for my open yard area, 1st while trimming around bushes and flower gardens and 2nd while in more congested lawn area. It does need anti scalp rollers, maybe there will be a fix for that. I bought the mulch attachment (with the points I earned throught Sears) and it works very well. I did get a 5 year service contract which covers EVERYTHING on the mower, including yearly at home oil changes and tune ups, it is worth every cent, buy it. I live in Northern Florida and mow 10 months of the year, I do plan to get the leaf attachment for this Fall. So far so good, it runs and cuts very well. I do run non ethylene gasoline in it and all of my lawn equipment, it makes life much better for all, especially myself and my wallet.
when I engage the blades it stalls? does anyone have a fix?
Did you find a fix yet
xoxo13 make sure you have full throttle.
Very informative. Good job!
Thanks! Just got mine and love it, I don't have that water connection but it's great....
you could run a toggle switch to the wires for the reverse switch to where you could just flip a switch if you wanted to mow in reverse and flip it back when you needed to.
I had a rear engine sears 40 years ago for over 12 years, mowed good, then had a murray rear engine for over 25 yrs,it did great. Both mowers pulled a small hill i have except the rear wheels would spin, dont know why except the center of gravity was off, have a troy bilt pony have have no problems..i am pleased with my pony....maybe they fixed the center of gravity..good luck
Great video. Thank you!!
this video is the only reason I learned how to use this mower
I have used it all season now...The biggest complaint, no gauge wheels on the deck. It gouges the high spots in your lawn. I welded a 3" extension on the shift lever between the legs.. a great improvement !!
I just purchased one of these. Thanks for the reverse mowing hack.

I got this model. Tractor runs great!
Thank you! Excellent review with tips and explanations
Just discovered today. Under the seat the knob to adjust the seat is always vibrating loose. Almost lost it today. I put some low strength Loc-Tite on the threads. There's 2 other threaded gray squares that hold the seat together under the seat. I had to place a bolt and flat washer in both with Loc-Tite. One of these popped into the seat. Found a longer bolt of the correct size, threaded into the gray square, pulled hard and popped it back in position. No anti-scalping wheels so raise deck one level when needed. The tranny shift pattern is designed so you don't slide into forward/reverse I'm guessing. This mower is smaller and can tip. I did not disable the kill switch on the seat. Kill switch/button on the mulcher plug- make sure you properly engage it when plug is removed and then reassembled.
Good demo and information. Gonna buy my first rider soon. This looks like my choice.
Thank you for this review; it was very helpful.
Thank you for telling me how to make it cut in reverse I really appreciate that hope you have a great Thanksgiving Day
U figure out all u had to do was push the button by the key?? Lol
The reverse feature is a must thanks for the info
This video was very helpful in my selection of this mower thanks
Thank you for this video! Buying one
Hi. Good video A tip that will help on wear to your deck belt is to lower the speed of the mower before engaging the belt lever.

Used my new Troy-Bilt from Lowes yesterday for the first time. It took a while to get so that I was comfortable and will probably take a couple more weeks. I did disconnect the switch to allow reverse mowing. There is a small hill to contend with and I'll figure that out as I go along. Did have one significant scalp issue where I bumped something and the deck went from the highest position all the way to position one. To keep that from happening again, I looped a Velcro strap to lock it in place, and hope that helps. Being 6'4", 250# I'm concerned about being top heavy while riding and worry about tipping over. I like the mower so far however.
Cool, Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it has answered lots of my questions and i think a great insight into this model ride on. in Australia we dont have sears but looks 100% like a rover mini rider and cub cadet mini rider, is it badge swapping umm probably.
yes i agree about the deck wheels, my 1974 toro wheel horse has them and i would miss them however my old girl is getting way to hard to get parts for.
can this mow up and down hills. I have pretty step hill in front
no the engine made at mtd then the mowers are put together at there factorys all seperate but simular ,the CC30 has head light for 2018
I'm looking to purchase this particular mower off Craig's List; excellent review and tips.
Great video! Thanks for making it.
Great review. BIG thanks for the reverse-mowing hack. That was a frustrating (but thoughtful) safety feature I can do without. Just have to pay attention to what's behind you. ;)
Joe Hischer why won't the mower move once it has beenstarted
I have one of these mowers and it operates and cuts very well. There is one thing that I noticed particularly, however.Sometimes when I am in forward gear and I release the clutch from a stop position on an up hill grade, the mower will not move at all. I think that there is a level of resistance where the transmission will not engage. I have to put the mower in reverse and back up to a more level grade and then put it in forward and then the transmission will engage and I can proceed up the hill.
Next time look at the rear tires, they may be spinning. Happens to me every time I mow up a hill.
VG review. Thanks. Very helpful.
Thanks for the video in buying mine soon
Excellent video, very informative.
Great review, thanks sir...
Very informative! Thank you!
Excellent video, thank you so much!
Great video! Very help info. It help make my mind which mower to buy.
Very instructive, thanks. Am getting ready top buy one.
Thank you. I was concerned about my small hill until seeing this.
I just purchased the same mower
But in australia its labled a rover
Awsome little rid on mower
There’s a triangular button next to the ignition key. If you read the instructions, you’ll learn that if you turn the key to the left one notch, then hold the button down, you can then mow in reverse. Super simple.
@Icarus II well, that sucks. The key tag was covering it and I thought I caught a glimpse of it. Apology extended.
Well, otherwise a pretty good mower. If you ever discover how to keep it from clutch jerking, please pass it on.
Great Mowers..Ive never bothered with the mow in reverse "problem", but I have considered doing so and I understand it could really bug some people... In fact the gear shift rod, witch is metal, is built to make contact with the frame and ground out the motor if you put it in reverse with the PTO engaged. Probably safe if you have kids or pets who like to play tag with the lawnmower while your on it. Easy enough to slide a rubber or plastic sleeve or hose section over the shift rod/link to stop that, without disconnecting any wires . Pop the gearshift knob off (easy enough, and this is my ONLY complaint with these mowers. Irritating when it comes off in my hand when I shift. But easy to slap back on) and slide it over the gearshift rod, then replace the gearshift knob..The seat switch is there for a good reason ..don't defeat it. Riding mowers can flip over on an incline..They have and will again. Bad enough to have it land on you WITHOUT the blade turning ..
I have a Craftsman lt 1500 and it has the jerk issue when you let go of the clutch also, but its a great mower.
thx very good tips thx for helping
Great review!!
scalping...... make sure to fill your tires up exactly to max.... plus, it sounds hillbilly, but those two lil tabs on the front sides of the deck, drill a hole big enough to hook a bungy on and stretch across to the other side... it works
were do put the bungy from 1 hole to other or were thanks gibb2208@gmail.com
Grate video!!! Thanks for the info
Thanks for all the info.
the guy never did reply looks like
Great Review, Thanks
How you drove it taught me how to do the lawn
How wonderful to get info as to how to get to mow in reverse. That built in feature is one ever pain-in-the-a$$...not now!!!!!
good video, thanks.
Thanks for the video. I recently got my Craftsman 420 cc rider and not having the ability to cut in reverse was a big problem, thanks for showing how to disable the "safety". The Troy Bilt has a different ignition module to run their rider in reverse. The seat on the Troy Bilt can swivel to the side. In the U.K. this rider is called a Rover & in Australia is a yellow Cub Cadet all built & made by MTD. Why did you not get a mulching kit, since you are not bagging, the grass gets cuts finer?
Thanks so much for this video. It has helped me a lot. I have one big question for you. Every fourth time I use the mower I have to charge the battery. Any idea what's going on with that? The machine is new. The battery is new. Thanks for your help.
