RDavidR, I know this is after the fact, since you posted this video back in 2015. But after hearing you mention about sanding that clear sealer, get yourself a bottle of Citristrip. I think that's how you spell it. It's orange and thick and you brush it on and wait 30 minutes or an hour or so, and then scrape it off. It pulls off sealer and stain. It might take a couple of coats though. I use it all the time on refinishing furniture. Keep this in mind for any upcoming refinishing drum projects you may have.

Oh, I'm being reminded of muffling the springs inside the lugs of my old 'Star' drum kit exactly like that, more than 30 years ago :-)) Actually, those rounded lugs totally look like 'Star' ones, too! :-)

I really love this UA-cam channel, great job Dave. And that light green finish you put on it is astonishing.

Last year I bought a crappy drum kit (nothing like this, though) and a vintage Ludwig Rockers snare for $100. The snare was/still is in pretty good condition, but the kit... it's craptastic. I like to (jokingly) say that I bought a snare for $100 and got a free drum kit. lol

Excellent project.I am sure you will make it a great kit.Paint stripper would really help get most of the paint off then sand the rest.Fill the lug holes with wood filler than you have undrilled shells to work with.Looking forward to seeing and hear the final kit.

    Happy new year David!
I've finally had some time to watch more of your videos.
I know the lugs seem mismatched. judging by the vast majority, I would say this is an old Pearl kit. Remember cheap Pearl kits were made in Japan back in the day. The wood looks like Phillipine mahogany. I have several kits like this.
    Pearl manufactured the following brands...
Maxwin, CB-700, Stewart, Werco, Ideal, Crest, Revelle, Revere, Lyra, Majestic, Whitehall, Silvertone, Apollo, Toreador, Roxy, and Coronet. Just to name a few.

Recently I managed to do something similar with a 1983 Pearl BLX from 1983. The sizes are 24x14, 12x8 and 16x16.
The first item I bought was the kick for just 30 Eur. I sold the incomplete spurs for 13 eur. and I mounted a pair of SP-30 spurs I had among my spareparts. Unfortunately one claw and t-rod was missing but two days later I found wood fiberglass bassdrum for free!! From this drum I sold the legs for 35 Eur. On this drum there also was a Sonor bracket I also sold for 35 eur. One rim and the fronthead were sold for 10 eur each. Six months laterI bought an entire matching kit for 180 Eur. The toms were just fine but the bassdrum Was severly damaged. Bassdrum hardware being sold for 75 eur, the damaged shell for 10 eur and an old Unilock tomarm that also came with the kit for 10 eur as well. Old Bassdrum batterheads sold for 20 eur and bought two new ones (an unused Remo Ambassador clear and an unused Evans Hydraulic blue) for 10 eur altogether! The decal on the front head cost me 15 eur and for two new 12 inch superhoops I paid 20 eur. and 13 eur for a pair of used internal mufflers for the toms. And not to forget an O-Ring for the hole in the bassdrumhead I paid 9 eur for.All in all the entire kit costs me 59 eur so far!

From what I can tell, this is a vintage Luan wood import drumset. I say import because from the 60s through the early 80s, there Were tons of Cheap Luan drumsets that were produced in Japan and were exported under dozens of different names. Apollo, Silverstone, MIJ, STAR, CB-700(my first set), Dixie, Majestic(the $15 tom you bought and restored), U.S Mercury. The list continues. Later, the companies making these piles of shit stopped and created good quality sets under their own companies . Pearl and Tama...
