Why do humans not have superpowers?

  • Kaitlyn is joined by theologian Christa McKirland to answer this week’s question, “Why do humans not have superpowers? I’d like to fly.” This might sound like a silly question, but it opens up a whole bunch of important theological ideas: why humans were made as dependent creatures, what the “image of God” really means, and what our resurrected bodies will be like. Plus, Christa argues that we actually do have superpowers! (What are they? You’ll have to listen to find out.)

Well answered! We discount our everyday wonders so easily. We find ourselves inferior when we look at what others can do and we cannot. We find others inferior when we look at what we can do that others cannot. We find ourselves grateful and humble when we look at all God has done for us and others.

I can think of two other ways that we actually do have superpowers. First, we can survive death, in that God has promised to raise us back to life on the last day. That power isn't from ourselves, but we do have it. (And, ultimately, all power comes from God anyway.) Second, look at any of the amazing things humans have learned how to do. We make medicine and fix broken bodies with surgery, we make rocks think (in a manner of speaking) by shaping them into computers, and we've sent people to the moon and robots even further! We could also include art, which imagines and then creates beauty that wasn't there before, and procreation, which produces new humans out of almost nothing. In these ways we are not just creatures, but also little creators, doing the same kind of thing God does on a much smaller scale. The only reason we don't see those things and more as superpowers seems to be the fact that we can actually do them.
And don't forget that humans have actually figured out several different ways to fly. We just need things like planes or wingsuits or rockets to help us do it.

My daughter was just asking if she could have Animus magic. Very timely.

Oh my goodness this is just so wonderful, insightful, refreshing… Much needed to add to The Holy Post’s growing brand. This is uplifting and so helpful (not the often critical & scoffing tone in your other one)… My 14-year-old son and I listen in the mornings now as we drive to School, he said, “this is actually really interesting!”
