I remember talking to an old Naughty Dog developer for research on the Crash Team Racing DYKG named Rob Titus, and he told me some crazy stories about how awful Universal was. There was a lot of yelling and swearing, let me tell you.
I spoke a lot to Andy Gavin, I used to have lots of videos on my channel regarding this, but nobody gave a shit about them back then before this new wave of fandom. All the original fans and their original research is just being stolen by new wave fans making cheap videos.
The documentaries on the working conditions during production of Enter the Dragonfly is horrifying. People to this day never got paid for the work they did on that project.
Naughty Dog told Universal that they wouldn't be renewing their contract with Universal after Crash 2 finished development and this caused Universal to treat them like garbage during development of Crash 3. CTR didn't start out as a Crash game either, and it wasn't until Naughty Dog showed the Kart Racer prototype that Sony wanted to make it a Crash game. Naughty Dog were only willing to make it a Crash game if Sony obtained the rights to Crash from Universal, which they agreed upon and managed to secure the deal. CTR was the only Crash game made by Naughty Dog that had no involvement from Universal in any capacity, which made developing it much less stressful to the Naughty Dog team.
This is also why Universal doesnt appear in the intro because as you said they had no involvement in CTR. I honestly never knew that until a couple months ago.
@Chandler Burse No she said that because ND wanted to end their contract with Universal after Crash 2, they began treating them like trash during the development of Crash 3. Universal always had the rights to Crash. Same goes for Spyro. ND and Insomniac just had contracts with Universal to make games for them. Once they moved on, Universal went looking for other developers.
It's hard to say for certain, but CTR was developed without Universal's involvement in any capacity outside of letting Sony and Naughty Dog use the franchise to make the game a Crash Title. I believe they still had the rights to Crash and Spyro as IP's, as was made evident by the later titles. CTR was the exception, and I'm not entirely sure if Sony temporarily had the rights and then Universal bought them back, or if they never had the full rights, and Universal just allowed them to make a Crash game without their involvement. Either way, CTR was the only Crash game Naughty Dog developed that wasn't filled with ire and stress thanks to Universal.
finally someone who complains about universal about how they treated the crash and spyro franchises, i usually hear people saying shit about activision but never say a word about universal, as someone said in a server, activision is the best company that ever owned the crash franchise
The grand irony is that Universal themselves really didn't contribute much aside from publishing, which Sony themselves could easily have handled if only Naughty Dog and Insomniac had come to them directly. ND and IG realized this and decided to work directly with Sony from then on, creating Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank as Sony exclusives like Crash and Spyro should have been.
@@toirlangston7203Im mean, they kinda are but not really? The credits show that it was basically co-published by Sony and Universal. Universal owned the rights to the IP but Sony had publishing rights to the first 4 games
Activision did Crash and Spyro justice. Despite the microtransactions in CTR Nitro Fueled, I'm looking forward to newer games in the future. I'd be satisfied with Playstation or PC versions.
@GalacticHypernova it's a game meant for online. That was its major selling point. Granted I won't deny that the servers aren't the best but it's better some other games
MTX in CTR are more than fair, but what cause backlash is that they sneaked them in the game after reviews were out. It's kind of an unfair bullshity strategy.
I'll like this new era when I get a game. So far we got two betas so far. N sane trilogy is unplayable broken mess and nitro is playable, but glitchy. Not unplayable but online is filled with hackers
It’s like as a mass corporation of movies, Universal is its (partially) universally (no pun intended) admirable self, yet somehow, as a game developer, it is a mass corporation of gaming so bad it would even make Nintendo look like Sony Interactive Entertainment (Sony is pretty much the anti-Universal because despite being far from the best mass corporation of films even though MCs aren’t well-known for having the highest of standards (especially when it’s Viacom with Nickelodeon, MTV and Paramount), they are so much better as a gaming company with fascinating IPs like Pac-Man World, Crash Bandicoot (mostly), MediEvil, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, God of War, Bloodborne, The Order: 1886 (from a production standpoint), Spyro the Dragon (mostly), Knack, Ape Escape, Spider-Man, etc).
Universal made dumb choices. While Crash and Spyro are owned by greedy and scummy Activision, at least the devs (Beenox and Vicarious Visions) are good hearted with Activision treating the devs like people.
I'm actually surprised by how little amount of videos are about this, and by how little amount of people know about this. This was drama that I grew up with and have known about since I was a kid, but whenever I talk about it people are usually surprised and never knew until I told them. It's sad that there are so many people that don't realize that Universal is the main reason that the Crash and Spyro series ended up the way they did.
@GalacticHypernova Oh, this video only scratches the surface of how bad Universal treated them. There are many more stories out there, you just have to do a bit of research to find them.
Dude I thought the reason ND and IG dumped crash and spyro was simply because they got bored of the games and wanted to do something different, plus there was nothing much else to do with the characters
@@Takeru9292 While it's true that Naughty Dog and Insomniac were just about done with the series anyway, they left them behind mainly because of the way Universal treated the employees. After they left, Universal didn't take good care of the Crash and Spyro series at all, resulting in a ton of bad and mediocre games.
It's so depressing to know how awful universal is. Especially after the recent enter the dragonfly documentary made by Mr. FO1 (i implore anyone to take a look at it) it's become a bittersweet feeling now looking at post naughtydog, insomniac entries.
Heck, I heard that the reason Lex Lang replaced Clancy Brown as the voice of Cortex was because Universal thought that Brown was too scary for children. .......Words cannot describe how stupid that was! I don't mind Lang, but that's a ridiculous reason! -_-
Thats why Cortex was soo stupid since TwinSanity I miss the pure evil Cortex he was a great villian even better than Bowser But now he is just a joke thanks to that people i hope in a future Crash game he is not soo humoristic and stupid as he was since Twinsanity
I just realized. In the late 90s, Crash and Spyro were icons, essentials, almost. Crash was nearly om the level of Sonic. And Universal screwed it up so bad that it took both franchises over a decade and a half to recover
We've reached the point in gaming where people are seriously defending predatory practices simply because "it's not as bad as the other type of predatory practice." That's how brainwashed people have become.
Universal: I make the best crash bandicoot and Spyro game ever Activision: I will fix there mistakes and make the best crash bandicoot and Spyro game ever starting with remastering it
They allowed the same things to happen to both of them simmultaneously: -An amazing trilogy of games on the Ps1 considered to be the best in the franchise (Crash 1, Cortex Strikes Back and Warped/Spyro 1, Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon) -A fourth game developed for next gen consoles which ruined the character's reputation (Wrath of Cortex/Enter the Dragonfly) -A fifth game which was pretty good and showed potential (Twinsanity/A Hero's Tail) -A couple of games which took the franchise in a new direction and made the franchise go into hiatus (Crash of the Titans and Mind Over Mutant/The Legend of Spyro games) -A remastering of the original trilogy for the Ps4 which revived the characters and added polish to beloved games (The N. Sane Trilogy/Reignited Trilogy)

I probably will hate Universal Interactive for a very long time to come. At least Activision treats its employees fairly with safe working conditions. Edit: Thanks everybody for the 20 likes. Never thought that I would get that many likes on any of my comments.😁 (7/27/23) Edit: In light of the revelations in the past few years about the working conditions at Activision-Blizzard, I fully take back what I said in the second part of my original comment three years ago. What I said in the first part of my original comment still stands though.
"At least Activision treats its employees fairly with safe working conditions." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Activision posted record profits for 2018 and still laid people off in 2019 just to make that little bit more money by not paying those employees any longer. Activision treats their employees like shit.
Wrath of Cortex ( & etd in most ways) are prime examples as to why publishers shouldn’t force devs to scrap their ideas/stuff and rush games so the Pubs get those holiday sales bucks. I’ve heard wrath of cortex had allot more ambitions initially, but the ridiculously short dev time allotted could only let them get as far as a sub par crash 3 duplicate
Damn! Working at Naughty Dog was hell. And I thought working retail was stressful. But I can sympathize because I'm an IT major and I will say this ... WRITING CODE / CREATING A PROGRAM IS NOT EASY!!! I wonder how many "If else" and "for loops" the Naughty Dog devs raged over when their code wasn't running.
@Hwan Niggles I don't doubt that. I was just listing those two syntaxes as an example. I'm well aware that they gotta write code for the platforming physics, give the wumpas, crystals, boxes, gems, etc their own variables. And I'm well aware that 3D modeling in 64 bit graphics wasn't easy either
I remember at Universal Studios theme park they used to have employees dressed in Spyro & Crash mascot costumes back in the 2000's. It was pretty dope.
Monster Society me too, I never forgotten the first time i met crash at the universal studios theme park, it was in 2005, i was nine years old and this took place in December when they had the winter festival parade at Orlando.
You know what else would be dope? A Fast & Furious and Crash Bandicoot crossover. Just as long as it’s by Universal AS A FILM STUDIO, NOT A GAME STUDIO (though to be fair, The Fast and the Furious is one of the best movie series with the worst games).
I remember being so angry before Crash and Spyro were revived. I kept thinking that if they had been treated properly, they would have been as big as Sonic, if not Mario. One of the most heartwarming things about this Activision revival so far is that it has shown that Crash and Spyro were not forgotten. Always brings a smile on my face when I see how well they"re doing now.
Dear god! And I thought Universal Studios giving us those god awful minion movies, a barf bag infested adaptation of an 80's Broadway musical (Cats), and shitting all over the Jurassic Park franchise with the 2 Jurassic World movies was bad enough. 🤢🤮💩
I can't say that Crash and Spyro are in good hands, in Activision's hands, but they are x-times better publisher than EA. And they made great remakes with no MTX and added new levels in n sane trilogy for free. Yeah, there are MTX in CTR, but let's be honest, if a game features ANY kind of online service, it is bound to have some kind of monetization. It costs some money after all. Oh, and the free content they release every month to half priced game, I think it's more than fair. Still, I am still mad at them, because they left Crash in dust for almost a decade. Here's a time for a redemption.
What I want from my Playstation platforming heroes -Crash 4 and Spyro 4 (I know we had the Wrath of Cortex and Enter the Dragonfly but those were best left forgotten) -a Crash Twinsanity re-imagining -a Crash and Spyro crossover (forget Crash Purple and Spyro Orange) -a re-imagining of the Jak and Daxter PS2 Trilogy -a re-imagining of Jak X and Daxter PSP -a Sly Cooper PS2 Trilogy remake -a Sly 4 re-imagining -a PS5 emulation of the Ratchet & Clank PS2 Trilogy and the Future saga -a sequel to R&C Into the Nexus
Reading your comment made me realize that most of the ideas from back in the day were actually quite good. It's just the execution that's horrible. I too would definitely buy and check out the things you mentioned if they became reality.
Its things like this that really cast a shadow over your childhood...I'm glad Universal Studios died out because they were horrible and ignorant! My hopes go to Activision for creating new Crash AND Spyro game! For the love of all things sacred Activision please don't just focus on Crash, give the purple dragon some love too!!
The worst thing that the Spyro series did was add extra non dragon characters. Other than the ones they already introduced in the original game. That cheetah dude was a terrible idea. Somebody higher up must’ve came up with that idea and really forced it into the game. Terrible design. Oh, an too much dialogue.
Y'know, I never thought there'd be a day where I respect Activision of all companies, simply because they revived these two platforming juggernauts and they're both back in the public eye again. Both trilogies released to critical acclaim, Nitro Fuelled was something nobody expecting but loved, It's About Time is getting praised across the board and now the eyes are back on for a forth canonical Spyro game.
Naughty dog: makes an ultimate amazing game Universal : no we don't like good games. You wanna make it? Then threaten us and work on it in a room where ac is free and by that we mean you're getting a heat stroke
I'm honestly excited to see what they can do with the future Crash and Spyro games. Haven't played Spyro remakes, but Crash remakes were extremely faithful to the original and well made. I hope they aren't going to give them yet another unnecessary reboot treatment.
So let me get this straight. Even though I’m rewatching this a year later, it basically seemed like it was always a catch with crash and Spyro. They either get treated horrible by Universal, or get owned by a greedy company who pumped out call of duty games every single year, and make them as ridiculous complicated and complex as you can. I’m looking at you crash 4 it’s about time! Lol
Don't forget how Naughty Dog pointed out that Universal basically "killed" Tawna. Yeah, her leaving Crash for Pinstripe? That's non-canon. Universal wasn't fond of Tawna's sexy body and demanded a change, but Naughty Dog had a difficult time making a new design that would please them while keeping her like the character she's based off of, Jessica Rabbit. So in the end, they scrapped the character. Interesting how Activision gives more respect to characters than the company they originally came from.
For "Enter the Dragonfly" someone went into full (and I do mean full) research into the game and its development. Things got so heated in between all three companies that someone almost lost their life working on the game. In fact, Check 6 would have been a fantastic game company if it wasn't for Universal. For more details, check out the Mr. FO1 channel and subscribe to him, he deserves the attention for his amazing work!!
The fact that Universal didn't greenlight a Crash Bandicoot cartoon beyond a pilot, despite doing just that for Earthworm Jim beforehand (successfully), is an early sign that they had no clue what they were doing. Not that Sierra were any better, but Universal had no business overlooking games. Especially since Activision actually knows to nip development in the bud if things go terribly within a dev company (see Crash Landed). It's also telling that CTR's plot involving an alien was Naughty Dog's attempt at getting the Crash series cancelled, thinking that fans would find it too outlandish (didn't work, since the series already had sci-fi elements). To think they were being worked THAT hard. One last takeaway is that the developers for the N. Sane Trilogy are Vicarious Visions, who were also involved in Universal's tenure of Crash and Spyro. Telling how NST did so well that Naughty Dog creators finally fully praised a Crash production they didn't have personal involvement with.
This reminds me of how disrespectful microsoft was to the fans of banjo-kazooie. I mean, if you’re gonna buy a company or at least an IP, make sure you think about it first, otherwise you’ll get no profit for years, let me tell you.
Well, I have no opinions about the Universal Interactive Studios, Vinendi Universal Games, and Sierra Entertainment published to Crash & Spyro games. I don't think they're that bad games. I'm a huge fan of Crash & Spyro for years. 🤔 Oh, and by away, I also can't wait for new Crash Bandicoot game in 2020, and new Spyro game in 2021 after Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. Hopefully E3 2020 will announce and reveal the trailer of the new Crash Bandicoot game by June 9th to 11th 2020. 🙂

When i saw that title of this video...i couldn't agree more with you canadianguyea. As a side note: universal interactive studios was indeed a pretty bad publisher. (Well...after 2000 that is.)
Good video, but you got a few things wrong. While crash bandicoot 1,2, 3, and ctr all came out a year after eachother, crash bandicoot 1 had 2 years of development time. The other games had about a year, crash 2 having about 13 months. 3 had 11. And ctr was at about a 10 months. While these seem short, however you forgot 1 important thing. Video games required significantly less resources and time to make sure g the 90s than standard games now. Most games back then were made in about a year. Also naughty dog had a 3 game contract with universal. Not 4. After crash 3 naughty dog left universal. They wanted to make a racing game and went to Sony to negotiate a game. Sony wanted a crash themed racing game. While universal did implement crunch time, however it was crash 3 and ctr where universal was really abusing naughty dog. 2 from what I've been able to look up had a relatively smooth development. Sony worked with naughty dog to deal with universal for ctr Also going back to crash 3. 3 originally was suppose to be a racing game, however during that 11 month development time, the game early on was developing a racing engine, that same engine that was used for ctr. Statements from Andy Gavin have said that they spent a few months on that build. Implying 2 to 3 meaning crash 3 was most likely made in 8 months. So while ctr was made in 10 months, they did have a build that had few months already worked on. I'm not defending universal, but I'm making sure accurate information is given.
6:54 "Go on to make epics like The Last Of Us" Please. That game is POS. No better than any of the mediocre Crash games (As in post CTR ones)....kind of sours the example/point. Good video otherwise.
Wrath of Cortex is far from the worst Crash Game. It's not even that bad, it's just needs improvement. Hell I think if they remade it like they did with the first 3 games and maybe just tweaked the story and fleshed out the controls better, it'd be a really good game. Sure yes it is a Crash Warped clone but that doesn't need to be a bad thing.
@@johnathonturner2279 Oh don't get me wrong. I'd personally want twinsanity more because despite all the content it is my favourite Crash game outside the OG trilogy. But I think I'd still want both. Who knows. Maybe both can be on one disc. They were PS2 games.
I am not gonna hold too much hope. Activision did the exact same thing Universal did. They found two at one point triple a studios in their relative infancy (Neversoft and Infinity Ward and look at how both those turned out.) I feel like there could be good, but remember what Activision did with Crash: Mind Over Mutant as well.

TBH, the only thing Universal did right was their logo itself (with the music done by the late James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith) and having both I.P.s at the theme parks in the early 2000s.
And if the N. Sane Trilogy & Nitro Fueled are anything to go by, that's N. Sanely true.
eh, universal history on games is always forgotten, in fact, most of the hollywood gaming studios (except disney and warner) are pretty much forgotten
Brandon Collup I sorta wish that Sony was the publisher's for crash and Spyro at that time
@@toirlangston7203Im mean, they kinda are but not really? The credits show that it was basically co-published by Sony and Universal. Universal owned the rights to the IP but Sony had publishing rights to the first 4 games

Revealed Ninji EA ranking among one of the top WORST now, yes. They are quickly becoming known as franchise killers.
Activision did Crash and Spyro justice. Despite the microtransactions in CTR Nitro Fueled, I'm looking forward to newer games in the future. I'd be satisfied with Playstation or PC versions.
The microtransactions literally do nothing in CTR apart from buying cosmetics. It's not terrible by any means.
To add to your comment, you can literally get all the cosmetics just by playing

Universal: I make the best crash bandicoot and Spyro game ever
Activision: I will fix there mistakes and make the best crash bandicoot and Spyro game ever starting with remastering it
They allowed the same things to happen to both of them simmultaneously:
-An amazing trilogy of games on the Ps1 considered to be the best in the franchise (Crash 1, Cortex Strikes Back and Warped/Spyro 1, Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon)
-A fourth game developed for next gen consoles which ruined the character's reputation (Wrath of Cortex/Enter the Dragonfly)
-A fifth game which was pretty good and showed potential (Twinsanity/A Hero's Tail)
-A couple of games which took the franchise in a new direction and made the franchise go into hiatus (Crash of the Titans and Mind Over Mutant/The Legend of Spyro games)
-A remastering of the original trilogy for the Ps4 which revived the characters and added polish to beloved games (The N. Sane Trilogy/Reignited Trilogy)
1:54 yo what if they added him to CTR Nitro Fueled 😂? They added Hasty who was based on a concept art character
But seriously I’d take Activision and their money loving addictions over Universal and their cruel minds any day of the week. Cruelty is way worse than greed

You don't have to hate them. They're pretty much gone long time ago. Justice is served.
Spyro and Crash would've been video gaming legends alongside Master chief, Sonic, Steve and even Mario if it wasn't for universal's stupidity.
At least Sony was nicer than Universal Interactive.
Video game programming goes beyond the loops and returns
@Hwan Niggles I don't doubt that. I was just listing those two syntaxes as an example. I'm well aware that they gotta write code for the platforming physics, give the wumpas, crystals, boxes, gems, etc their own variables. And I'm well aware that 3D modeling in 64 bit graphics wasn't easy either
Universal needs to stick to movies.
Crash and Spyro have suffered enough.... thank you activision for a lot that you do! Also Vicarious Visions, Beenox and Toys For Bob
Actually no, the original trilogy was published by Sony Computer Entertainment (now known as Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Dear god! And I thought Universal Studios giving us those god awful minion movies, a barf bag infested adaptation of an 80's Broadway musical (Cats), and shitting all over the Jurassic Park franchise with the 2 Jurassic World movies was bad enough. 🤢🤮💩
And now... I really hate Universal.
I think it's because universal is a movie company, they just didn't know much about video games
Did you know that spyro and crash were used to be appeared at universal studios theme parks?
If Universal did their part well, they could've been not just the most popular movie company but also the most popular video game company out there.
Man, Universal messed up big time. Hope Toys for Bob keeps up the good work.
I wonder how many Marsupial/Mammals they had to give them super intelligence and power before just scrapping and eradicating them whole.

Nah. I'd like Naughty Dog to work on a new Jak and Daxter game.
If only universal let naughty dog and insomniac do their thing
Y'know, I never thought there'd be a day where I respect Activision of all companies, simply because they revived these two platforming juggernauts and they're both back in the public eye again.
Both trilogies released to critical acclaim, Nitro Fuelled was something nobody expecting but loved, It's About Time is getting praised across the board and now the eyes are back on for a forth canonical Spyro game.
Naughty dog: makes an ultimate amazing game
Universal : no we don't like good games. You wanna make it? Then threaten us and work on it in a room where ac is free and by that we mean you're getting a heat stroke
I hope they can get many of those original exdevelopers back, under WAAY better circumstances and more respect.
I'm honestly excited to see what they can do with the future Crash and Spyro games. Haven't played Spyro remakes, but Crash remakes were extremely faithful to the original and well made. I hope they aren't going to give them yet another unnecessary reboot treatment.
Thanks, Activision. you're not as bad as Universal after all
So let me get this straight. Lol
2:48 I thought you meant Crunch Bandicoot
First universal gets rid of crash and Spyro, but they make Nintendo land. I don’t understand 🤔
Is great to see Activision has changed, and not greedy like EA
What was the knocking sound at 7:26?
They are the same company that owns Illumination who also made the Minions.
*Exactly like Cartoon Network was AWFUL to Mixels*
universal: nooooo you can’t make a company feel relived by making their development less hard

Spyro was never the same after Enter the Dragonfly...

AHT was great! 😃👍
Wasn’t the cartoon stuff just a intro and outro for the game?
@@JustCallMeHeavy Maybe, but you'd think they would have done more with the concept, by having cutscenes upon clearing each island, at least.

you forgot 1 thing, crash and spyro on the universal theme parks
"Crunch"... Bandicoot? "Crunched for time" Oh
Sony worked with naughty dog to deal with universal for ctr
Also going back to crash 3. 3 originally was suppose to be a racing game, however during that 11 month development time, the game early on was developing a racing engine, that same engine that was used for ctr.
Despite all Universal has done I still really enjoyed Wrath of Cortex.

TBH, the only thing Universal did right was their logo itself (with the music done by the late James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith) and having both I.P.s at the theme parks in the early 2000s. The biggest irony is that Universal distributed Crash and Spyro in the past, while they are also doing a Mario and Sonic movie. (In my country, Universal is the distributor of the Sonic movie)
Imagine the new crash game comes out and at the end, hints a new spyro game.
It's like a hype making machine! Especially if it's a secret unlockable for 100%
