Your Navy friend was spot-on, Jocko. My father was not apart of my life when I was growing up, and I feel like your podcasts enrich my life with lessons that were missing from my childhood as a result of him not being there.

I’ve read Extreme Ownership three times now and have gifted it to my team at work, my peer leaders, my VP and my CEO. As a former Army enlisted soldier and later an Army officer I’ve read many of the same books Jocko reviews here, and I continue to read and look for new lessons so this podcast is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
I know this podcast is years old now, I am working through the entire series because listening to Jocko reminds me that I am capable of more, that my team and my superiors deserve more from me at work, and that my wife and children deserve more from me at home. Life is more fulfilling when lived with extreme ownership, so now I’m getting two episodes each day to keep me on track!
Thank you Jocko and Echo for this exceptional podcast!
The closing response - Jocko’s explanation of what motivates him - hit me like a ton of bricks and nearly brought me to tears. Although I served from 1992-2001 I never saw combat, but like Jocko I remember former comrades who sacrificed all for us.
Now I have my purpose - to dedicate the rest of my time on earth to honoring their memory and their sacrifice.
    Time to get after it!

Your comments on the last question "being placed on a pedestal" were spot-on and is the reason why so many of us look to you for leadership inspiration. For me, your pod casts help me re-focus on the reasons why I became a manager and help bring me out of a funk when I get frustrated. Thank you.

That’s 100% spot on, LOTS of people myself included grow up without a dad, and seriously I’ve never come across someone who made me wanna do better like a father figure would. I genuinely appreciate everything you have to offer. I’m sure you won’t see this,. I only found you in 2020! It’s been nothing but positive stuff for me since then. I’m making more money. I’m getting into better shape. I’m much less emotional. Thankyou Jocko.

Hey Jocko, I came across EO in my passionate endeavor to pursue my hobbies of Leadership and Team Building. Now you have topped the list of my mentors.
Like Echo said, in regards to hero status, the fact that you are so humble is what earns you the respect you deserve. I am former militay, and I appreciate the feeling of once again having a mentor that "get" the military mentality that stays with us.
Along the lines of what you said, you are not my hero as that term will forever remain with my fallen brothers. However, you have my highest respect and I do look to you as a core mentor to shape my life and you are helping me to help others.
I am in the process of binging your past podcast and there hasn't been one that hasn't caused me to think about things. Keep up the awesome work!!!

That ending inspired me to my core. My lesson from Jocko’s ending is, of course, to cherish and value those who sacrificed their lives courageously in the face and throes of evil incarnate around this world, and to therefore - now - be responsible stewards of the inherent gifts that God blessed is with, whatever they may be. Additionally, on a personal note, listening to Jocko’s ending resurrected a revelation, within me, of the sacrifice my mother put forth from the day I was born, which was an absolute, undying love, care and concern for me - be damned for her well being and welfare. It has taken me two years since her death from bile duct cancer that ravaged and destroyed her body in short order for me to begin to make sense of the passing of the best friend that I ever had. Thoughts of checking out and giving up are starting to be replaced by a “motivation” to forge a path in my life that along the way may positively impact people that intersect my path. Thank you Jocko for opening up like that, laying your heart and guts on the line like that. I feel you 100% and I’m inspired to keep on keeping on, and fighting the good fight, and working in a spirit of excellence, and always taking extreme ownership . May your brothers in arms and my mother Rest In Peace. Now let’s get after it. Check.

Mr. Jocko. Echo. UA-camrs. Hello. I have three areas that caught my attention during this Podcast.
    1. Mr. Jocko I agree with you about Patton. He was a complex man, and we watched the film "Patton" as well as the film "All the young men" during our deployment to Bosnia in 98'. I know that film well and have read about the great man. With all that being said, I always wonder about these great men that send other men to their deaths. I have mixed feelings, but if we have to fight, we might as well have the baddest dude on the block on our side.
    2. Essential equipment for a home Gym. Mr. Jocko, I have to agree with Echo on this one. I don't think new fitness people will get very much out of rings or pull-up bars. I think the one item new recruits need is the 45 pound bar so they can do shoulder press, curls, tri's, "mock" deadlifts and squats. Just my opinion. I say this because some people are years away from a single pull-up.
You have been hitting it hard for 20+ years, so you know what you are doing. I also get a better workout in the gym, than on my own. I have the drive and arrogance to always push myself because I believe I am Conan the Barbarian, but everyone doesn't have that. Many people need encouragement. I get energized when I see a pretty girl in the gym. I don't know why but I do. If I am on pushup 50 in a row and see a girl looking at me, I can get 20 more no problem. So I agree that the gym does give a bump of "T".
    3. Mr. Jocko you deserve credit for being dedicated to a healthy life style and the way. Sometimes people fall into the "Jim is doing good syndrome".
Two sisters married to twin brothers named Jim and John. Jim gets plastered drunk every day. Every night he is womenizing and gambling, spending all of their hard earned money.
John rarely drinks. Stays home. Model husband.
    So here is my parable:
Oh here bout' November Jim is starting to get sick and tired of being sick and tired, so he goes about three days sober, just a couple of beers and he stays home. No gambling. Now John is on leave and the kids are at their grandparents and John stays drunk for the whole three day weekend, even goes over to a buddies house to play cards one night, much to the chagrin of his wife.
So bout' sundown the two women are talking and Jenny says "How is everything" and Jane says "oh the dog is Crapping outside so much, I can't even sit out there anymore. The kids are at mom and dad's, and Johns always drunk now" "He's over at 1SGT Ray's house gambling right now" Jenny say's "oh that"s to bad. Sorry to hear that" Then Jane say's "How is Jim doing" and Jenny says "Jim's doing good" " He's out back playing with the kids right now".
Mr. Jocko you ARE a type of Superman. When you say we are only being exposed to a small part of you and those are your successes, well we don't want to hear about hours of your screw ups. We can get that by looking in the mirror. Also, the parts you share with us are, I would imagine, the main parts of your character. Or to put it another way, the military, fitness part you share with us probably makes up 80% or more of who you are as a person. You are warrior/athlete archetype.
We want to hear about heros and heroic deeds to inspire us. Not confessions of failure. We want to know what the hero learned on his journey of course, but mostly in the context of how these lessons helped to shape the hero.
A hero rarely triumphs. Tell me about a hero in real life or mythology that wins. Yes, they often defeat the dragon, but often they sacrifice all that they love and must live with emotional trauma for the rest of their life. Isn't heroism about sacrifice. The end result is not why we love hero's or put people on "pedestals" we love his journey. The road that made him or her who they are is the hero's path. That path is motivating. The courage to travel that path is inspiring. "Brave is when you have no fear. Courage is when you are afraid and do it anyway." -Eisenhower addressing the 101st.
You traveled a hero's Journey. One that most of us can only read about and we thank you for honestly and humbly sharing that experience with us.

Everything you teach in every podcast helps prepare men for combat, for life, even for inevitable death, even for civilians. To back track : new comment 1st July 2017 47 mins in I don't know I can watch it for 2 bloody hours.
God I do admire you Jacko so much that is good about being a real man, you remind me of my old man, a man's man, he would have laughed at Pattons stuff, medals come on , but you personify what he would have become if he hadn't drunk himself to the point of being abusive in pubs etc, but fear ...if he did get afraid he never showed anyone, deathe he died the way he lived ...suddenly unexpectedly like a Zen master , but we had real fights , i remeber wrestling with him once on the couch when he was abusive towards my Mother on one occassion .
Some great stuff in here Jacko, accountability, but being able to change direction when necessary .
BUT....and it is a very big but .
This whole video podcast Jacko makes me extremely nervous , you seem just to skim over General Patton's pathology a sociopath ?
Yes in battle use-full but in civilian life a bully and tyrant a "sick" man ! ?
Another man stuck in warrior mode , a proud cock, a man's man , a proud mixed up un felling disturbed mockery of what it is to be a man or human being , " a child like man", confused ? You tell me ? Disciplne ? Y/N sort of ..the enemy is within surely ultimately ?
There is a wonderful Zen story of a Roshi finally approaching his end in mind fullness, saying I am scared "I do not want to die" ! Honesty ...not yeah lets go for it .
I think that;s why MASH is one of my all time favorite program mes , it mocks this superficial bravado ,only disturbed men want to go to war surely ?
Much more courageous to knowledge what's going on for you and get some help !
    God Bless R

As big as he is echo seems to have some serious confidence issues. Wonder if Jocko was trying to mentor him and make him stronger or something cause it super obvious. Got live either way

@@israelmungenast4206 Rubbish i went over a year in psychiatric hospital , abusive drunken parents , at 35 lived 3 years in 10 different digs out of boxes to get a social work diploma Ive experienced alot of bullying and social victimization .
A badly broken elbow arm last year I just do NOT GO ON and ON about war , and all this as if it is universally relevant it IS F...boring , however i do like alot of Jockos stuff , he interesting dialogues his interesting views but I do not share his passion for war , my dad was a seargent major in Burma and was mentally disturbed by it as were many men , war isn't neccessary in the twenty first century and it is about time the human race grew up a bit don't you think eh , so not weak just fed up with his 2 hour long diatrites ,heh do I get a highlite !
Even though there is other stuff in the podcaste it is just too long !
I wish jocko would post shorter and also be more open instead of stating what he thinks is , all this incessant combatative stuff , in my view some kind of adloscent stuckness , fighting the whole time , but heh who am I to argue with someone built like a bear ?
If I have an opinion does the whole world need to know ?
So it goes on and on... But I guess it is a sign of ti the times we live in , Like donald trumps incessant tweets eh .
