Obsidian is incredible. Every game completely different type of RPG, on different engine, under insane time schedules, with insane publishers, and somehow they make it through releasing best RPGs on the market. Liked listening to Josh talk a lot, he should come more often.
I absolutely LOVE Obsidian (FNV is my all time favorite), but when people blame their games publishers I have to disagree. Obsidian voluntarily accepted their publisher's contracts, and even with several deadlines extensions they weren't able to make a solid launches... Still amazing devs though
Ilay Yoeli Well they voluntarily accept it so they can actually stay in business. But hopefully thanks to crowdfunding they will be able to break free of publishers and their BS. Bethesda is especially terrible one.
8Paul7 Bethesda? What did they do wrong? Asking them for a solid launch? They gave Obsidian the most time they ever got to develop a game, along with an engine, mechanics and assets.
Planescape Torment (my favorite), Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights, Gothic 1&2, Fallout 1&2, Witcher 1&2, Diablo II (can't really count this one, because it's a hack and slash), Deus Ex are a few of my favorite RPG's of all time.
@@pierrari458 I actually got the same impression, didnt even finished it the first time, i played it again some months ago tho, after playing fallout 2, now i fckng love new vegas xd
Original Wasteland, old Gold Box Pool of Radiance/Dragonlance games, Dark Sun games that came out in the mid 90s. Bards Tale, Ultima's (7 was peak), Planescape Torment, NWN and NWN 2, Temple of Elemental Evil. Morrowind, are some of my all time favs
Bethesda, let them make another Fallout game. I mean Jesus Christ everybody on this planet excluding couple of Bethesda biggest fanboys want this game to exist. Just give people what they want.
In my opinion an RPG isn't defined by its skilltrees or abilities or its character sheet, IMO it is about having a say in how your character acts within the confines of dialogue of the game. To give you a way to roleplay your characters motivation in his interaction of the world. Choices in Baldurs Gate have very little consequences in the actual game, but they do give you as a player a huge sense of what motivates you. Same with all great infinity-games and to some extent Bioware games. Diablo, Darksouls and Borderlands, while all great in their own way, would never make one of my RPG-lists since you do not have any way to influence your motivation for going through the story. You just do it cause its there. Same with most JRPGs I've played, while there is dialogue there it is mostly just there to progress story, not to build character since the characters are already defined from the get-go.
totally agree with this , and the same with final fantasy that has never been a RPG it is a action adventure series with RPG elements . ppl need to know the difference between playing the role of a character and roleplaying as a character
Jack Green Exactly. Not only they compel you into the plot, they give you the tools to tackle the situations presented to you in a way that'd make sense to your character.
In no particular order my top RPGs would include: Dragon Age Origins. If we're talking top 25, maybe DA2 could sneak in the 20's somewhere. Mass Effect series. Witcher series. DEHR. Oblivion and Skyrim for sure, maybe Morrowind. Neverwinter Nights 2. KOTOR 1. Drakensang. Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. Fallout 3 but probably not New Vegas.
"Only" been playing Divinity Original Sin for 25-ish hours with my buddy so far. Still in the first realm, around the first city. Getting close to finishing it though, and we have four more big realms plus more stuff. So far it's my game of the year by a large margin. It's buggy, and I wish the game had full voice acting (would gladly pay 10-30 euros more just to get the voice acting), but man I love it too much, I can easily forgive it for that.
Borderlands? Bioshock? As RPGs? Is that redheaded guy part of a 'special' program, where the government gives you tax breaks or something if you employ a mentally impaired person? If that's what's happening, kudos to you, PCG. If not...
I never thought that simple charsheet and leveling was enough to make any game an RPG. A game might have elements borrowed from RPG's but that doesn't make them an RPG. I wish this would be understood by other people too, especially guys who review games for a living. HINT HINT. A game where you get to make choices and play different type of personalities is closer to an rpg, though I prefer the term crpg because they are limited on computers, always. There's about as many options and choices, consequences and endings as the developers can fit in. There'll never be a true roleplaying game on a computer or a console.. but games which offer us the option to make choices will always be closer to rpg's, even if they didn't have a damn char sheet :P
Borderlands is an RPG despite the fact that there are NO real game-impacting decisions but Bioshock gets flack for having some "inconsequential" binary decisions that "do not effect he game"? How about the bad ending versus good ending for how you treat the little girls (to harvest or not to harvest)? I have a difficult time agreeing with some of this since story and decisions with consequences are definitely important in a good RPG.

NWN2 is best example of it. Original campaign feels like mix of Kotor and Baldurs Gate, Expansion 1 like Torment and Expansion 2 like Fallout.
Ilay Yoeli What's several deadline extensions worth if they're not sufficient to begin with?

Thanks for inviting Josh Sawyer to this episode, it was awesome! :D
Can't wait for Pillars of Eternity.

gothic 1 isnt as good as 3,for me its 2 and 3, and divinity is quite quickly going up my fav rpg list
you missed icewind dale I+II
***** i didnt like those for some reason, maybe the combat wasnt as fun as i would have liked it to be
*****
I didn't like Icewind Dale sorry.
Gothic and the Witcher series are terrible.
i freaking love new vegas !
Pierre Fouquet that was my initial impression until I put my bias aside and really sunk my teeth into NV.
@@pierrari458 I actually got the same impression, didnt even finished it the first time, i played it again some months ago tho, after playing fallout 2, now i fckng love new vegas xd
Loving this new content from PCgamer.
Bless them for giving their time to make these fantastic games
I've never heard of JSawyer mod. I'm going to try it out on my next Fallout:NV playthrough.

I really like Josh in the video. Keep up the great work!
Josh Sawyer is a true OG
Puppets are evil
The resource based camping system sounds like a great addition to the infinity engine games! Now camping wont seem like too much of a good thing!
Fuckin SICK. Fuckin SICK, man.
JE Sawyer is the best.
that diss on fallout 3 though
I love Fallout New Vegas!
I've dumped hundreds of hours into it on my crappy computer and loved every minute of it.
Bethesda, let them make another Fallout game. I mean Jesus Christ everybody on this planet excluding couple of Bethesda biggest fanboys want this game to exist. Just give people what they want.
SeboTrzyDe3D unfortunately they finally did it and did it wrong. I've been going back to NV
Really well done.
Yo Cory, how's the Maru account coming along?

The Fallouts are certainly at the peak of it.

why isn't this a podcast ?
Diablo was an action game with rpg-like elements but absolutely no effect on the story or outcome.
Dragon Age: Origins is by far my favorite
That guy who suggested Bioshock doesn't understand the concept of choice and consequence.
"PC Gamer" Has a mac book pro for the "PC Gamer Talks" xD

Definitely the best RPG game is Gothic II.
TES game better be Morrowind...
LOL It will
Ilay Yoeli I bet it will.
I would be happy if it was Daggerfall.
Franciszek Rychlewicz
daggerfall>>>>>>>>>>>>>morrowind
xSpArTiChRiSx I love that one too. I always wished they would bring wall climbing back.
the host in the game is the definition of PC Elitist Nerd LOL
Cool
Boarderlands, seriously?
WTF is this! Part 2!
The spit smacking sounds are super fucking distracting. Fire the audio guy. You're in a sound room. This shouldn't be happening.
intro gave me cancer
This show's format is a goddamn mess, like 90's MTV mess.
