    Hi everyone! Thank you all for the all the likes, kind words and for getting this to 12k views! I made this video just over a year ago as a class requirement and was proud enough of it to archive it publicly here on my channel, hoping it would maybe help a few students who stumbled upon it. I've not been able to make similar videos since, though seeing all the people who found this helpful certainly makes me want to.
    That being said, are there any similar topics, concepts, or theories you'd like to see me cover in the same style as this video?

    • @barlibo
      @barlibo  3 роки тому

      interesting topic! unfortunately im a bit swamped with school right now, so maybe some time in the future :D the section towards the end of this video about the variant decoding positions might be helpful though for a more political analysis! :) if you have any specific questions too i can *try* my best to answer them here

      @hamsterluvr9460 3 роки тому +1

      @@barlibo Thank you & I understand! I’ve started this course in university as well and soon enough I have to give an exam and so much things are unclear. One of the topics that I have to deal with is this one,,I pretty much understood it from your video in which you did a good job :) Anyhow, is this topic related to Critical Discourse Analysis? I’ve been explained that CDA is like semiotics but with an adding- it discovers the power relations within the text and I don’t really get what it means by that (in a practical way). If you can give me a brief explanation about it I’d be forever grateful lol. Also sub earned

    • @barlibo
      @barlibo  3 роки тому +2

      @@hamsterluvr9460 thanks much for the sub! hoping to have more vids up soon. i'd say its definitely related to critical discourse analysis, as are most other theories on communication/media. I haven't studied CDA quite as in-depth but my impression is that it's a bit broader. Whereas encoding/decoding has a focus on the relationship between sender and receiver, just like the older models of communication, CDA seems to have greater focus on dominant practices within discourses and societies in general. With regards to power relations, I'd refer back to the idea of texts having a "connotative level" where they begin to be ideological. For example, a film with a female protagonist may be, on the surface, entertaining, thrilling, etc. But at the connotative level, one would examine if the use of a female character is meant to empower female representation (as it commonly is by female directors, writers) or fetishize it (as it tends to be with male directors--though this is changing with the times, too!) In Hall's model you'd probably take a look at the sender's intention and whether or not the receiver(s) interprets it that way, but in CDA your scope would probably be a lot broader, comparing it to other similar films/texts, and even real-world examples.

    Can someone tell me how Hall’s theory is anything more than a rehash of Barthes death of the author? I understand that Barthes didn’t say exactly what Hall is saying, but he did say that the audience plays a significant role on the construction of meaning. It seems that Hall is just explaining how Barthes is correct. That’s fine but I feel like it should be much more clear that Barthes is the real theorist here.
