In Sam fisher's defence, the plots of the Splinter Cell games were never as bad as making hezbollah and al queda unite into super ISIS. At least up to Chaos Theory. Also, I never found Sam Fisher to be a 'good' guy, I always found him to be more of one of those 'rough and ready' psychopaths.
Oh, and you could play the game without killing people if you were very good.
I mean, I don't really play most Tom Clancy's games for the plot, most of the time is some shitty military pulp story.

The whole "Army Ranger nearly killed" backstory for Office Jim is a variation of the backstory you hear in "The Hunt for Red October", that Office Jim was in a helicopter accident as an Annapolis cadet and "did his last year in traction" before he was picked up by the CIA as an analyst.
