This episode is a good one, and my favorite is the one on Jordan Peterson. I listened to it twice already, and will do so again as long as that charlatan keeps selling books.
With the whole Thanksgiving thing; during the 2016 election, my grandparents asked me what I thought about Bernie and how I felt about a democratic socialist my response was "I was a socialist before he made it cool." They laughed because just about everyone in the family had been socialist for generations and they never talked to me about it because I hadn't brought up politics before.
@@keishpie1 My grandma was telling stories this year about how her family was well off when she was growing up and had extra rooms in their house, so they would let 2-3 people that needed a place to stay for the night in and give them food. I often feel very lucky that my family has just always been that kind and caring.
Virgil (foreshadowing): "You get out of there, don't even say a word, don't even look them in the eyes. They don't deserve that. You don't owe these people anything. Go to the airport, block all their numbers, you know, filter all their email addresses..."
"You know Bernie's never going to give you everything he's promsing right? It's just not realistic." "At least his history says he'll fucking try. That's more than I can say about anyone else on the stage."
My husband worked in a very large WeWork (I call it Wee work) suite in Manhattan, leased out by a single multi billion dollar company, not individuals... it was the most bullshit bougie oversized exposed-beam faux luxe multistory tool shed with incomplete murder stairwells and free designer peanut butter and tampons ever.
My hometown briefly had a place called "(hometown name) Cowork" in about 2011-2012 when the tech craze hit there. Sure, you had to pay to use the coworking space, but some people put it on their LinkedIns like they were employed by it.
46:41 Did anyone else catch this? They called it the, "Arab-Israeli conflict". They purposely don't mention Palestine as a way of characterising this as a conflict between a state and an ethic group.
"There's no bigger sucker than the smartest guy in the room." Amber is on fire this episode. Making me feel all academic in my pants. (Rise up, slighted adjuncts. If we all strike this bidj we could shurt 'er down overnight.)
afaik theyre democratic socialists, like legit not like aoc usin a buzzword on late night television. u'll hear them talk about worker self-management, surplus value, i think some of them are membees of the dsa, etc.
To me it seems thus far they are hiding their power levels and are just working in the frame work of what is present That said, i honestly dont think the distinction matters much at the moment
They're pragmatic marxists. Matt Amber and Virgil definitely are for the eventual abolition of wage labor, Will and Felix mention stuff related to that far less often1 but probably agree, but I don't think any of them believe they'll live to see that. Their project is working on building socialism and surviving under capitalism. They don't advocate revolution because the left in the imperial core is soooooo weak that it's pointless. Building political power that won't be stomped out in 2 seconds seems to be what they want.
@halupadude : He ran before and is a known quantity to the Democratic electorate, and now we empirically know at least half of his support came as a protest against Clinton as those people have peeled off and are no longer interested him. As a known quantity to the electorate, it seems at most 20% are willing to support him, 20% is insufficient to win this primary race. Ergo, he literally cannot win save the other top 5 candidates dying. Support his policies, but don't waste money on propping up another hopeless campaign.
@@michiganmonkey1910 : I agree anti-establishmentism is a big factor, and until Washington does something to satisfy that we'll keep getting anti-establishment candidates (which would include people like Trump, as well as people you'd actually want as a leader). But I've known since the spring that this primary is between Warren and Buttigieg. People here may as well pick the one they like the most now, because they'll be voting for one of them in November.
“He tried a bunch of dumb shit first before deciding nvm he’ll just do real estate”
Amber just described the American economy.
Wonderful. And Amber needs to do accents more often cos that was golden - Malkovichian even.
"It's not the dog, it's the owner" sums it up pretty well.
This is one of my favorite episodes. I already shared the article with all my friends who didn't read it but now it is accessible on youtube.

On my 3rd listen right now...more of this please!

I wish I was in your family. My dad likes Kamala Harris and Sam Bee. I got my mom on board with Bernie in 2016.

A socialist who doesn’t bring up politics.. interesting.
"Oh great I ran afoul of the company wizard again" my sides exploded you have no idea
"Gareth in warlocks is gonna have my ass"

“Everyone has a spiritual desire for community” damn :(
chum bucket I mean thats a good thing right? The innate desire for community forms the basis of socialism
"You know Bernie's never going to give you everything he's promsing right? It's just not realistic."
"At least his history says he'll fucking try. That's more than I can say about anyone else on the stage."
Those two were the inspiration for the show Frasier.
Peace love and solidarity!
They're spot on about jobs. Jonas Salk is the anti jobs hero of the past.
This hits different in November 2020.
Virgil has the least hair which makes him the most attractive if that's your thing

Everyone knows there's no such thing as a Palestinian
Still waiting on that St. Petersburg show 😢

Those commercial mortgages are going to explode this year, it'll be way worse than 2008.

Virgil Texas sounds like what I imagine a young Bernie Sanders sounded like.
No.
Sure? Especially since he sounds like Bernie Sanders now?
for November turkey, May-ham
Please don't yell at me I love the show but where does the name Chapo Trap House come from?
Around Orlando, IIRC.
Will used it as a funny working title for the first episode, cuz its sounds like a mixtapes title. Just stuck.
@@Saramusvasque2838 is the Chapo part a reference to the cartel leader ?
@@Chaturbate_Billy yeah

Trump for human president
I mean, just president, the species was never in question.
I like that they can be so witty, yet still know so little about American politics that they think Sanders can win.

What you call a protest against "clinton" should b realized as a stand against "status quo"...and that has massive momentum
