Using a Come-along To Fell a Tree

  • That time of year is here! Wood cutting time. Today is a bit different in that I didn't intend to fell this tree for firewood. But the reality of living on a bush property is that you're going to be cutting down an awful lot of trees at times you don't intend. Today I take down this tree to keep one of my big white pines in good shape. Although I originally thought I'd be able to just pull the tree over with some chain and come-along work, the frozen ground likely held the roots just enough so that it wouldn't tip the rest of the way over. Watch the struggle to get things hooked up with a length of chain and a 2 ton come-along in the cold winter weather here in Central Ontario. With a bit of help from my Husqvarna 555 auto-tune, I make a quick notch in the tree to help speed up the process. The Husqvarna 555 auto-tune works well for taking the limbs off the tree as you can see as well. Another load of firewood is coming up the trail as I drag the tree over to where I will process it into firewood using my 2012 Kioti DK40se. Well folks, the sun is setting and dinner is near, that means I'm outta here. Thanks for watching.

Glad to know I'm the only one who struggles with comealongs

I like a rope puller better than the regular come along types that spool up aircraft cable when pulling/putting tension on trees. You get unlimited length, rope doesn’t rust, and most importantly, it doesn’t spool up the rope. The rope just hangs down underneath the come along onto the ground. It’s a little more cluttered during use and harder to pack away for storage with the rope “installed”, but you can store the come along with no rope/cable anywhere near it preventing tangles or worse, wet cable getting spooled up tightly, sealing the melted snow moisture all along the inside of the spool causing rust eventually. So you can have the actual come along always stored by itself, checking on it/putting some kind of rust inhibitor spray on it every so often whereas you can’t re apply rust proofing to the middle or underneath the spooled cable without running it all the way out first.

I've heard good things about the Capstan winches with the ropes. My only question for people who run them was if they ever felt that they needed more pulling power as from what I understand most top out around 1500lbs of pulling force.

The cold weather makes work so much fun I’m glad it work out for you. What with the duke tape on your saw for? If you don’t mind talking about it good job 👍

The duct tape is just covering the name of the dealership I got the saw from. The dealership isn’t in business anymore so figured I wouldn’t confuse anyone if they happened to see it

Hi there Sandy, what size chain do you use? I use a choker but like your long chain better!👍🏻 thanks for the video brother!✌🏻️ this comment went to the wrong video. Happy holidays 🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻✌🏻️

Happy holidays Alan. Those chains are 20’ chain used for securing heavy equipment in trailers. I believe it is 7/16” but I can quite remember . Definetly heavy when I’m hauling them around by hand

Can you point me in the direction where I can buy chain like that, and come along? Or just beat way to look for it. I enjoyed the video sir.

This come along is from Princess Auto if my memory serves me right. In the US the equivalent store would be Harbor Freight. I believe this chain is from my local Tractor Supply store

Okay not trying to be rude at all and I have some logging experience. Why did you have to use a come a long in the middle of no where? Was this just an educational video? It was very good once you got your gear going.

Tree was leaning on another tree and I wanted to keep it full length so I could mill it on my sawmill

I find ATV winches are great but ATV itself isn’t heavy enough for a hood anchor

Hey Sandy, take some of that UA-cam money, get you some gloves. For me, bad gloves can ruin the fun of work.
