I do describe it incorrectly however as I state more than once that it's an instant hot water solution when it's not. It's basically a smaller and more efficient version to what I had before, but whereas the old tank would always lose heat because of the cold water it also contained, this one has no cold section and does a better job of retaining the warm water over time.

A photo cell on the outside wall and a contactor could provide a solution to only allow it to heat when been powered by solar. This could effectively provide free hot water. Unless you are using lots of water during darkness hrs then there should still be enough to provide hot water for hand washing at all times. Could also add a 1hr timer on a push button to provide a "boost" function if required to heat water when dark This addition would make a nice follow-up video.

Hello there young man, yet again another fine video, as an old-time viewer of this fine channel I think Nigel was round at Phil's house "entertaining" his wife, you will recall this has happened on previous episodes, now we know the real reason he had a grin on his face. Good to have a Savery video for a Sunday evening. Nice to see abit more of Phil the fucking plumber, he actually seems like a decent chap for a for a waterboy. Keep them coming!
I have a little Redring water heater under my bath to provide hot water to a nearby basin as the LPG combi is a fair distance away. Great to see a proper plumber using copper.
So I one day found myself looking at the wall and wondering, would it make too much sense to have a "front tank" that could be run when energy is cheap(er) assuming spot pricing on electricity. Then you can preheat some of the water for later use and bring it up to safe temperatures (over 55C to avoid risk of Legionella pneumophila). As it would take less energy to heat lets say 38C water to 65C (default hot water temperature here) compared to fresh water supply (that usually is around 4-13C, depending on the season). This could also act as energy sink if there's solar panels and at the moment no direct need for energy they provide. Some home automation to turn on the elements after AC is happy and that's one of the few practical ways to store energy at home without really expensive upfront battery costs. Assuming that the house needs more warming than cooling, the wasted heat is not really that wasted if the tank is located somewhere indoors. It is just less heating required by more direct means.
The Ariston Heaters I have used have Magnesium sacrificial anodes which need checking by a qualified person every year. I have had three fail in 6 years in our Village Hall with electrolytic corrosion.
@@dsesuk Yep check page 17 of the manual. Our 30 litre model flooded the kitchen after 3 years with water spewing out of the anode chamber. Our 10 litre models failed their appliance test this year with rusty water dripping out of the anode chamber and obvious corrosion around the inlet and outlet pipes (even with the dielectric junctions fitted). Why the tank is made of non-stainless steel and glass is a mystery to me. The IR resistance had also fallen through the floor on both models. Unfortunately with all the complex pipework (expansion vessels, tundishes etc) we had no choice but to nip off to Screwfix and get like for like replacements which were relatively easy to fit in time for us to open. You shouldn't really have a valve fitted between the cold water pressure relief valve and the cylinder. It's not exactly a massive risk, but it allows the possibility of defeating one of the pressure safety devices. The supply isolation valve should be before the cold relief valve. It might technically be non-compliant with building regs G3 due to that valve, although might scrape through if there are still two remaining safety devices with the valve closed. I'm not certain about that, just aware that the regs people have a thing for the safety of unvented cylinders due to larger ones demolishing houses when the pressure can't escape and the heat source doesn't cut out for whatever reason (rare, but it has happened in a few cases). I've had good results from the Combimate limescale reducer. Looks a bit like a space helmet, and unlike other similar devices you can see how much is left inside. Nice thing about it is that the water coming out is still drinking quality so you can fit it in line with all the rest of the plumbing unlike a regular water softener. Used on systems that tended to get completely furred up within a couple of years. Had one home made heat exchanger with 15mm pipes inside an outer shell of a 22mm pipe get so clogged the outer passage was solid when cut open with a grinder. That problem completely solved with the Combimate. And yes I've seen the steaming toilet before :D
@@oldbutstillcurious3615 straight pipe, reducing Tees, etc. It was an attempt to make a heat exchanger more tolerant to getting furred up with limescale. Better off buying a plate heat exchanger and putting a Combimate in front of it!
Dave that looked like a magnetic scale reducer :( My tame plumber tells me to substitute the word Magic for magnetic as no one knows how they work except Harry Potter ! What you should have in the cold feed to water heaters / showers is a Combimate, this thingy uses Siliphos crystals (fnar fnar), and a known chemical reaction to stop scale and still give water that is drinkable.
I'm not a plumber so confused... what happened to the CH side of the system? How do you heat your home or was it an economy drive and you decided that heating was too expensive and sold your boiler, piping and radiators off on ebay to fund your other activities?
Link in description Darren. More might be said on that in a future video (one I thought might be out before this, but that's not the way things work it seems).
Lot of faff for a small tank of hot water - water cistern with a 3000W Suspension Immersion heater / element / some timer switches - plumbed with some plastic piping you’d be good to go for £150. Half a days work 👍
just wondered how you get water if need be for a bath ?? Are you not in the same situation you were before but now unable to have a bath because of water heater capacity ?? - If you are thinking of getting a walk in big shower DON'T - worst mistake I ever made a month after doing it I hurt my back & needed a soak - I'm converting it back when I get time !! Congrats on passing your test 😺
He had it transplanted in a thick ring around his sphincter. It wasn't supposed to be like that, but he filled out the wrong form and you know what the NHS are like for paperwork.
There's an instant boiling water tap at the kitchen sink if something with more pep is needed. The taps in the downstairs loo are to be replaced with a mixer when Phil refits it all, but goodness knows when that'll happen. You know what it's like trying to get a plumber to turn up!
it won't take long for all 30 LTRs of water to run cold and you'll be waiting around for I to heat up, I work on commercial shops and they fit these in a kitchen cupboardto to feed the kitchen staff room sink an a couple of WC wash hand basins. and once you have washed and rinseda few pots the water is cold. then it's another 30 min before it's hot again. the instant water heaters work more like an elec shower and run at 6 to 8 Kw.
It's only for the basins Scott. I have an electric shower and, in the kitchen, a boiling water tap. It's just a smidge better than the big ol' tank and it doesn't hold all that cold water I don't need. I'm still buggered for a bath of course, but then it's been eight years since I last had one and I'm used to the odour around here now.

I dumped gas back in 2014, foolishly thinking that it was a dinosaur fuelling option which would be phased out by being priced out in the coming years. After all, gas is limited in supply and often has to be imported making it vulnerable to world economics, whereas electricity can be generated via a variety of means that will surely make it a cheaper commodity going forward. Oh 2014, how naive of you! If only you could have foreseen how inept UK governments would be in securing an own means of adequate generation, how Brexit would remove us from a market we need for importing energy and how world events would indeed make the price of gas skyrocket, but that the cost would not be applied to gas users because that would apparently be unfair as not everybody uses gas, so it would instead be lumped on electricity to spread the cost over absolutely everyone. You’ve gotta laugh haven’t you?
@@dsesuk well if you dont laugh you might cry. Not finished the video but just be aware below 60 decrees C you may be at risk of legionella, unless that ariston unit has some form or purge function built in which is what is required when you do low temprature heating for modern condensing boilers and heat pumps.
Quick way to check a shiny surface for temp with those devices..... stick a piece of electrical tape on the shiny surface, then read the tape temp, no more IR reflective issue!! You can have that one for free yallll
What's that, the time it took for the old tank to heat? It was only a boost heater anyway, so 45 mins would see it do its thing, but it was only ever useful for the sinks rather than the bath.

Morning Mainline. Which video is that, I can't seem to find it among all those bloody shorts he's pooing out? I don't recall such a conversation, nor would I run tails in walls less than 50mm deep. By design, if the incoming supply is to be some distance from my DB, I would (and have) run armoured if it's to pass any distance through the structure of the building. On retrofit, I've pulled new tails between an exterior box and interior CU through the wall cavity in place of existing old ones like anyone else, but tails in a wall less than 50mm? No, not without RCD or mechanical protection. If Mr B and I have had such a chinwag, one of us must have grabbed the wrong end of the stick!
He was also on about 100ma rcd but as you probably know it would have to be a 30ma. Actually, I've messaged him a few times in the past pointing out non-compliance, but he never replies.
I reckon those tails are more than 3mtrs, but that's just a guess, obviously. Anyways David, take care out there as there are some proper C^^^s about :)

? What was the function of your home made heat exchanger - presumably straight pipes ?

Water? Drinkable? I'm sorry, you've lost me there Steve. Anything I drink at home comes either out of a green tin or a 70cl bottle.

There are other plans for that space. It'll be opened through from the bathroom when that gets revamped.

Lot of faff for a small tank of hot water - water cistern with a 3000W Suspension Immersion heater / element / some timer switches - plumbed with some plastic piping you’d be good to go for £150. Half a days work 👍
Well, I never said it was the best option.

Why not just use a gas combi? Gas is 1/3 the price of electricity. You'd also be able to have that hot deep bath.
Thought you'd given up the booze Dave? Whiskey and cigars aswell. Ya bad lad 😉
I gave up the booze in favour of cigars, but then I found you needed a drink to accompany a good smoke.

He had it transplanted in a thick ring around his sphincter. It wasn't supposed to be like that, but he filled out the wrong form and you know what the NHS are like for paperwork.

get phil to fit mixing valves to the handwash basins leave htr set at 50 for the kitchen taps
There's an instant boiling water tap at the kitchen sink if something with more pep is needed. The taps in the downstairs loo are to be replaced with a mixer when Phil refits it all, but goodness knows when that'll happen. You know what it's like trying to get a plumber to turn up!
Nigel’s gone Dogging!!!
it won't take long for all 30 LTRs of water to run cold and you'll be waiting around for I to heat up, I work on commercial shops and they fit these in a kitchen cupboardto to feed the kitchen staff room sink an a couple of WC wash hand basins. and once you have washed and rinseda few pots the water is cold. then it's another 30 min before it's hot again.
the instant water heaters work more like an elec shower and run at 6 to 8 Kw.

How comes you got rid of gas in the first place Dave? Was that because you installed your solar array and wanted to make the most of it?

What's that, the time it took for the old tank to heat? It was only a boost heater anyway, so 45 mins would see it do its thing, but it was only ever useful for the sinks rather than the bath.

You back on the booze Dave?
Booze and I fell out for a while, but we're back on speaking terms. I am trying to cut it out in the week for the most part though. Can't bloody afford it on an Electrician's wage!
Bundy on his video on the 13th said that he called you and you said it was fine to run tails through the fabric of a building less than 50 mm deep into Henleys.
I would have though that tails needed a 30ma rcd if less than 50mm
Btw you also have bundy saying Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz bar now.
@@dsesuk ua-cam.com/video/_n6CppolyHk/v-deo.html
He was also on about 100ma rcd but as you probably know it would have to be a 30ma.
Actually, I've messaged him a few times in the past pointing out non-compliance, but he never replies.
I also pointed out that because the Cu is in a cupboard it's technically not in a zone, so no real need to move it.
I reckon those tails are more than 3mtrs, but that's just a guess, obviously.
Anyways David, take care out there as there are some proper C^^^s about :)
8:45 oh dear Mr Savery, that mathS, or at least the equation, is not correct, not correct at all... 240V divided by 3000W to give us 12.5A, you say, surely not... It should be 3000W divided by 240V to give us that 12.5A, as in Amps = Watts divided by Volts, or I=P/V.
