If anyone is attempting this. Go to a junk yard pick and save with your tools. Try doing this on a junk yard car to see how its done so you can avoid breaking anything in your car.
For anyone doing this on a 1997 Camry, The pain part is removing the door and lock rods. My family mechanic had a spare clip for the door rod since those break easily and it’s a NEEDED part. It was also a pain to take it out so you have to remove the window track for more space. Took about a hour of my time. To the owner of the video - this was a great base information. Even though I have a 1997 Toyota Camry, there is no one out there on UA-cam who has such video. Yours was the only result. I guess you were in a hurry so you couldn’t showcase the door and lock rods which is the real struggle.
@5:07 My friend has a 1998 Camry and her outside door handle stopped opening the door (inside handle still works). I figured it was that yellow clip that connects the door rod to the handle so I ordered some replacements on Amazon. Thanks for showing the steps to get to it, it's similar to my 04 Avalon but it looks like it's a little easier to get to.
For 1994 Camry, here's the sequence: 1) remove 2 panel screws on arm rest; 2) remove two screws under plastic caps near hinge end of panel; 3) remove center screw below the arm rest; 4) remove the two plastic pins on door latch end of panel; 5) remove side mirror plastic piece (pops off with a good grip from top of triangle); 6) remove door panel by lifting up (note that the metal stand offs toward the front of the panel will likely rip off of the fiber structure of the panel, and remain seated in the yellow button clips. This seems to be unavoidable, like a hidden land mine); 7) disconnect button connector (pops right off if you press the tab with a screw driver and push lightly); 8) peel back plastic water shroud; 9) remove center-horizontal metal piece by removing 10mm bolts from actuator, and 10mm bolt at center actuator track, and 10mm bolts at hinge-end below mirror; 10) remove 10mm bolt for outer window track (latch end); 11) remove 10mm bolts for door handle; 12) remove 10mm bolts for inner door handle/lock assembly, so it's easier to undo the white rod snaps at inner door handle/lock assembly; 13) undo the green rod snaps at the door lock assembly; 14) slowly remove the outer door handle and undo the yellow rod snaps; 15) using a 10mm socket, remove the inner/hidden bolt holding the yellow anti-theft guard in place; 16) gently work the yellow guard out; 17) remove the 3 screws holding the door lock in the door; 18) while pushing the outer window track outward from the spot where the bolt was removed in step 10, slowly work the lock assembly downward and to the front. Once it's past the outer window track, it will drop free. Hardest part of re-assembly is getting the lock rod re-inserted in the hole at the lock assembly. It's just a plan pan in the ass. I needed a mirror, and it still took me 20 full minutes. Everything else - other than figuring out by trial and error what the removal sequence should be - was straightforward. Once the sequence was right, the lock assembly literally fell out of the door. Amazon sells the green, yellow, and white rod snaps, if any of yours break.
You left out how you removed the panel from the door, I think it would have been very helpful to see that part it also would have made your video a lot more thorough. However it does help as I am attempting to do a 2000 Toyota Camry which I believe has metal rods attached to the door lock and handle instead of cables
When I lock/unlock the doors with my key fob and it locks/unlocks the doors except for the driver side door. Would it be time to replace the driver side door lock actuator? I have to manually lock and unlock that door but the other doors work fine..
You skipped the one thing that makes it possible to get the part in and out! There is an upper window channel bolt that must be backed out so that the channel can be moved enough to get the part in and out. Don't remove it, back it out until there is enough movement to get the free.
Just finished replacing my door latch assembly on my Camry. Works fanatstic. I just hope my neighbor forgives me for all my profanity. If u dont have patience, do not attempt. LOL.
Thanks for this video. In my 98 Corolla, the left rear passenger door is not locking using central locking, so I am thinking I should replace the actuator motor, but not sure. Few questions. 1) How did you figure out that actuator motor was not working? 2) Where did you buy the actuator motor part from? Please let me know the website and the price you paid. 3) Do you or anyone happen to know if the actuator motor for 98 Corolla and 98 Camry are the same as shown in your video?
1. Usually, if all the other power locks work and this door doesn't. But if you really want to know, you will have to dissassemble and do a run test with it in your hand. 2. This was a long time ago, and I really can't remember. It was not a perfect fit had to do some mods to make it work. I believe it was eBay. Probaby around $10-$15 at the time. 3. It seems that many of the parts for Toyota are interchangable. But I do not know on this for sure, but I was able to use a Rav4 part on my Highlander, so there is a good chance. You should check out the interchange parts guide that many recyclers use like Hollander interchange. Good luck on your project.
I did get an idea of what you were doing but it was a shame I couldn't actually see what you were doing because your hand and arm were in the way of the view.
"I got everything reattached......." Yeah, putting the rod and the plastic snap on and off are part of the toughest parts of the repair. Would have liked to have seen that. The plastic end rod clips are brittle and often (usually) break. I made three trips to the dealership before they got me the correct end rod clips. I will be posting the part numbers and some pics somewhere. maybe come back and put a link here. The diagrams that purport to show the end rod clips and part numbers are lousy. The people at the dealership couldn't decipher them either.
Sir I have changed the front lock doors but it not close its only open And the rear doors its still not changed The problem is where from rear doors or the power front doors Thank yoy
i only replaced my broken driver side exterior door handle. I got everything back in but i can't get the door latch rod to push into the opening on the door handle so i can push the plastic yellow down over the rod. Any suggestions?
The angle might be off a little. Can you attach it with the door handle loose possibly? Or have you tried that already. If the rod goes down it clip should should go over.
You may need to check the movement of the rod and make sure that it travels freely. Also they cheap actuators may not be an exact fit even though they look the same. Make sure they work in the same way before install.
check the latch adjustment of the threaded rod that connects the manual lock/unlock. Move til it works proper. Do this before reinstalling the door panel.
Same thing happened to my Camry .. central locking fails .. open it up and try the lock and you can see the actuator fails to snap .. kinda just gets stuck .. so yeah I opened it all up just like In the video to understand the actuator was dead .. failed all 3 on my car , passenger front , back doors left and right ... Replaced them all .. painful but worth it
@@sia.b6184 I had new keys made direct from the dealer using the vin number. It solved my issues. I had three locks that were acting up, now with the new cut key they all work. It makes sense now when I think about it that it was the key and not something mechanical.
Hey buddy. I have a question. If this part you just replaced goes bad, Would it cause my interior door handle not to open...i can open the door from the outside but i cant open from the inside..i just replaced my door handle and it still wont open..Someone told me my door lock actuating rod could be bad and also i cant lock my door on the driver side...i have to manually lock it. Not sure if you're a mechanic or not but this issue is driving me crazy. I have a 98 Camry.
The rod and actuator are separate. The rod could have come loose from the lock assembly. You will have to pull the door panel to check. One rod works the lock and the other the door handle. There are plastic clips that hold each rod end in place.
Question!! When I use my key to unlock all doors it locks doors but don't unlock doors. Passenger side works fine. Driver side does not. I'm thinking it's the door lock actuator. What do you suggest
I had the same problem before I replaced the actuator on the driver door. It did fix the power lock issue but not the key function. I believe the issue maybe associated with the key portion of the lock. I need to remove to verify...
I had the same problem a key would't unlock my door and if you look on that piece that he takes off the door there's a little plastic piece on the end of the rod that piece broke on mine, you can get a new one at a parts store
If you can remove the inside door handle trim and the door handle, maybe you can reach for the cable and pull open. Other wise you will probably break something trying to remove the door panel to access.
How did you get the door handle rob out? Mine must be different as it has alarm installed. I can’t get the yellow rod tab out from the door handle. Any ideas?
@@TedTremendous You can remove the actuator (with out the door latch)with the handle rod left still connected. If you remove the key rod from the actuator/latch assembly,(move rod and/or actuator, up and/or down to gain access to release the clip and slide the rod off.... you can then position the actuator to remove the 2 screws that are facing you, that are holding the actuator, then with a stubby phillps or a right angle ratcheting philips you can remove the last screw on the other side of the actuator. When reassembling be sure to get the actuator's one lever in the hole it came out of and put the 2 screws facing you in most of the way then tackle the one screw in the 'back.
Got to say there is not point in posting videos unless you show what to do pausing and not showing how this is put together is just about as useful as some junkie working on your car
It depends on why it is not working. There is also an actuator on the passenger side, so depending on if it is the wiring or actuator, or something else.
My door lock doesn't work on the driver side. From inside I have to lock and unlock the door by hand. From the outside with the key, I turn once to unlock just the driver door and turn twice to open all doors. Is this the actuator problem?

You can just pull the entire door handle assembly along with the actuator to reduce a headache

spray some silicone 1st then they open and close much easier.
How is that clip supposed to come off and did you have to remove the window rail? I'm stuck on these two areas and you kinda skipp d them.
You have to rotate the clip to release the rod. If it makes it easier you can loosen the window track. To remove the latch mechanism.
I have a 98 Toyota Camry as well. Everything starts falling apart. It's just too old but the engine is still more quiet than most new Hyundai.

Make sure the rod has free movement and is not binding anywhere
Is the camry made in Japan or in the usa? Because the Japanese and the American built use different door look actuator.
This is US assembled.
Do you really have to mess with that window track?

What about the rear left door latch actuator problem!?
Sorry, never had to take it apart. This has not failed yet.
But pretty sure it will be similar to the front.
Did you have to remove the window track completely?
No, the piece by the door lock can be moved when you remove the lower bolt. The lock assembly should be able to be moved around the channel.
No, just a bolt to gain access.
What were the signs that the actuator needed to be replaced?
Could not remotely unlock.

Same issue I'm having on my 95 Camry. The power lock will lock and unlock the passenger door but not the drivers door.
